| 2 | Antibacterial activity of leaves and inter-nodal callus extracts of Mentha arvensis L显示文摘Objective:To determine the anti-bacterial efficacy of chloroform,ethanol,ethyl acetate and water extracts of inter-nodal and leaves derived calli extracts from Mentha arvensis(M.arvensis) against Salmonella typhi(S.typhi),Streptococcus pyogenes(S.pyogenes),Proteus vulgaris(P. vulgaris) and Bacillus subtilis(B.subtilis).Methods:The inter-nodal and leaves segments of M.arvensis were cut into 0.5-0.7 cm in length and cultured on Murashige and Skoog solid medium supplemented with 3%sucrose,gelled with 0.7%agar and different concentration of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetie acid(2,4-D) either alone or in combinations.The preliminary phytochemical screening was performed by Brindha et al method.Antibacterial efficacy was performed by disc diffusion method and incubated for 24 h at 37℃.Results:Maximum percentage of callus formation(inter-nodal segments 84.3±0.78;leaves segments 93.8±1.27) was obtained on Murashige and Skoog’s basal medium supplemented with 3%sucrose and 1.5 mg/L of 2,4-D.The ethanol extracts of leaves derived calli showed the maximum bio-efficacy than other solvents.The leaves and stem derived calli extracts on Proteus sp.showed that the plants can be used in the treatment of urinary tract infection associated with Proteus sp.Through the bacterial efficacy studies,it is confirmed that the in vitro raised calli tissue was more effective compared to in vivo tissue.Conclusions:The bio-efficacy study confirmed that the calli mediated tissues showed the maximum zone of inhibition.The present study paved a protocol to establish high potential cell lines by in vitro culture. | Johnson M Wesely EG Kavitha MS Uma V | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011，4，3： | 9 |
| 3 | Prevalence and risk factors of asymptomatic hepatitis C virus infection in Egyptian children显示文摘AIM: To identify the prevalence, risk factors and manifestations of asymptomatic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Egyptian children. METHODS: Children at the age of 1-9 years were screened for HCV antibodies and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. Every child with elevated ALT and/or detectable HCV antibodies was tested for HCV RNA by RT-PCR and compared with two negative controls for risk factors and signs and symptoms of liver disease.RESULTS: We screened 1042 children, six of them had elevated ALT, negative HCV antibody and positive RNA, likely representing acute hepatitis C cases. Fifteen children were HCV seropositive, 5 of them were HCV RNA positive. Asymptomatic HCV infection was present in 2.02% (positive results for either HCV antibodies or HCV-RNA or both). Symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, history of fatigue and school absence because of illness and risk factors such as dental care were significantly more common among HCV positive cases than among controls. None of the HCV positive children was diagnosed as having signs of advanced liver disease upon clinical or ultrasonographic examination. | 4 | Non-invasive diagnosis of H pylori infection: Evaluation of serological tests with and without current infection marker CIM显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the performance of commercially available immunochromatographic (ICT) and immunoblot tests covering the current infection marker CIM and conventional ELISA for the diagnosis of H pylori infection in adult dyspeptic patients. METHODS:Consecutive non-treated dyspeptic patients undergoing diagnostic endoscopy were tested for H pylori infection by culture, rapid urease test, and histology of gastric biopsy specimens. Serum from 61 H pylori infected and 21 non-infected patients were tested for anti-H pylori IgG antibodies by commercial ELISA (AccuBindTM ELISA, Monobind, USA), ICT (Assure H pylori Rapid Test, Genelabs Diagnostics, Singapore), and immunoblot (Helico Blot 2.1, Genelabs Diagnostics, Singapore) assays. ICT and immunoblot kits cover CIM among other parameters and their performance with and without CIM was evaluated separately. RESULTS:Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy of ELISA were 96.7%, 42.8%, 83.1%, 81.8%, and 82.9%, of ICT were 90.1%, 80.9%, 93.2%, 73.9%, and 87.8%, of ICT with CIM were 88.5%, 90.4%, 96.4%, 73.0%, and 89.0%, of immunoblot were 98.3%, 80.9%, 93.7%, 94.4%, and 93.9%, and of immunoblot with CIM were 98.3%, 90.4%, 96.7%, 95.0%, and 96.3%, respectively. CONCLUSION:Immunoblot with CIM had the best performance.
