Honey:its medicinal property and antibacterial activity显示文摘Indeed, medicinal importance of honey has been documented in the world's oldest medical literatures, and since the ancient times,it has been known to possess antimicrobial property as well as wound-healing activity. The healing property of honey is due to the fact that it offers antibacterial activity, maintains a moist wound condition, and its high viscosity helps to provide a protective barrier to prevent infection. Its immunomodulatory property is relevant to wound repair too.The antimicrobial activity in most honeys is due to the enzymatic production of hydrogen peroxide. However, another kind of honey, called non-peroxide honey(viz.,manuka honey),displays significant antibacterial effects even when the hydrogen peroxide activity is blocked. Its mechanism may be related to the low pH level of honey and its high sugar content(high osmolality) that is enough to hinder the growth of microbes. The medical grade honeys have potent in vitro bactericidal activity against antibiotic-resistant bacteria causing several life-threatening infections to humans. But,there is a large variation in the antimicrobial activity of some natural honeys, which is due to spatial and temporal variation in sources of nectar. Thus, identification and characterization of the active principle(s) may provide valuable information on the quality and possible therapeutic potential of honeys(against several health disorders of humans),and hence we discussed the medicinal property of honeys with emphasis on their antibacterial activities. | Manisha Deb Mandal Shyamapada Mandal | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,2: | 26
Biochemical changes in the injured brain显示文摘Brain metabolism is an energy intensive phenomenon involving a wide spectrum of chemical intermediaries. Various injury states have a detrimental effect on the biochemical processes involved in the homeostatic and electrophysiological properties of the brain. The biochemical markers of brain injury are a recent addition in the armamentarium of neuro-clinicians and are being increasingly used in the routine management of neuropathological entities such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, subarachnoid haemorrhage and intracranial space occupying lesions. These markers are increasingly being used in assessing severity as well as in predicting the prognostic course of neuro-pathological lesions. S-100 protein, neuron specific enolase, creatinine phosphokinase isoenzyme BB and myelin basic protein are some of the biochemical markers which have been proven to have prognostic and clinical value in the brain injury. While S-100, glial fibrillary acidic protein and ubiquitin C terminal hydrolase are early biomarkers of neuronal injury and have the potential to aid in clinical decisionmaking in the initial management of patients presenting with an acute neuronal crisis, the other biomarkers are of value in predicting long-term complications and prognosis in such patients. In recent times cerebral microdialysis has established itself as a novel way of monitoring brain tissue biochemical metabolites such as glucose, lactate, pyruvate, glutamate and glycerol while small non-coding RNAs have presented themselves as potential markers of brain injury for future. | Seelora Sahu Deb Sanjay Nag Amlan Swain Devi Prasad Samaddar | 2017 | World Journal of Biological Chemistry2017,8,1: | 22
Human cystic echinococcosis:epidemiologic, zoonotic, clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects显示文摘This review represents an updated scenario on the transmission cycle, epidemiology, clinical features and pathogenicity, diagnosis and treatment, and prevention and control measures of a cestode parasite Echincoccus granulosus(E.granulosus) infection causing cystic echinococcosis (CE) in humans.Human CE is a serious life-threatening neglected zoonotic disease that occurs in both developing and developed countries, and is recognized as a major public health problem. The life cycle of E.granulosus involves a definitive host(dogs and other canids) for the adult E.granulosus that resides in the intestine, and an intermediate host(sheep and other herbivores) for the tissue-invading metacestode(larval) stage.Humans are only incidentally infected;since the completion of the life cycle of E.granulosus depends on carnivores feeding on herbivores bearing hydatid cysts with viable protoscoleces, humans represent usually the dead end for the parasite. On ingestion of E.granulosus eggs, hydatid cysts are formed mostly in liver and lungs, and occasionally in other organs of human body, which are considered as uncommon sites of localization of hydatid cysts. The diagnosis of extrahepatic echinococcal disease is more accurate today because of the availability of new imaging techniques, and the current treatments include surgery and percutaneous drainage, and chemotherapy(albendazole and mebendazole).But.the wild animals that involve in sylvatic cycle may overlap and interact with the domestic sheepdog cycle, and thus complicating the control efforts. The updated facts and phenomena regarding human and animal CE presented herein are due to the web search of SCI and non-SCI journals. | Shyamapada Mandal Manisha Deb Mandal | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,4: | 21
Adjuvants to local anesthetics: Current understanding and future trends显示文摘Although beneficial in acute and chronic pain management, the use of local anaesthetics is limited by itsduration of action and the dose dependent adverse effects on the cardiac and central nervous system. Adjuvants or additives are often used with local anaesthetics for its synergistic effect by prolonging the duration of sensory-motor block and limiting the cumulative dose requirement of local anaesthetics. The armamentarium of local anesthetic adjuvants have evolved over time from classical opioids to a wide array of drugs spanning several groups and varying mechanisms of action. A large array of opioids ranging from morphine, fentanyl and sufentanyl to hydromorphone, buprenorphine and tramadol has been used with varying success. However, their use has been limited by their adverse effect like respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting and pruritus, especially with its neuraxial use. Epinephrine potentiates the local anesthetics by its antinociceptive properties mediated by alpha-2 adrenoreceptor activation along with its vasoconstrictive properties limiting the systemic absorption of local anesthetics. Alpha 2 adrenoreceptor antagonists like clonidine and dexmedetomidine are one of the most widely used class of local anesthetic adjuvants. Other drugs like steroids(dexamethasone), anti-inflammatory agents(parecoxib and lornoxicam), midazolam, ketamine, magnesium sulfate and neostigmine have also been used with mixed success. The concern regarding the safety profile of these adjuvants is due to its potential neurotoxicity and neurological complications which necessitate further research in this direction. Current research is directed towards a search for agents and techniques which would prolong local anaesthetic action without its deleterious effects. This includes novel approaches like use of charged molecules to produce local anaesthetic action(tonicaine and n butyl tetracaine), new age delivery mechanisms for prolonged bioavailability(liposomal, microspheres and cyclodextrin systems) and further studies with other drugs(adenosine, neuromuscular blockers, dextrans). | Amlan Swain Deb Sanjay Nag Seelora Sahu Devi Prasad Samaddar | 2017 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2017,5,8: | 18
Intracranial pressure monitoring:Gold standard and recent innovations显示文摘Intracranial pressure monitoring (ICP) is based on the doctrine proposed by Monroe and Kellie centuries ago. With the advancement of technology and science, various invasive and non-invasive modalities of monitoring ICP continue to be developed. An ideal monitor to track ICP should be easy to use, accurate, reliable, reproducible, inexpensive and should not be associated with infection or haemorrhagic complications. Although the transducers connected to the extra ventricular drainage continue to be Gold Standard, its association with the likelihood of infection and haemorrhage have led to the search for alternate noninvasive methods of monitoring ICP. While Camino transducers, Strain gauge micro transducer based ICP monitoring devices and the Spiegelberg ICP monitor are the emerging technology in invasive ICP monitoring, optic nerve sheath diameter measurement, venous opthalmodynamometry, tympanic membrane displacement, tissue resonance analysis, tonometry, acoustoelasticity, distortionproduct oto-acoustic emissions, trans cranial doppler, electro encephalogram, near infra-red spectroscopy, pupillometry, anterior fontanelle pressure monitoring, skull elasticity, jugular bulb monitoring, visual evoked response and radiological based assessment of ICP are the non-invasive methods which are assessed against the gold standard. | Deb Sanjay Nag Seelora Sahu Amlan Swain Shashi Kant | 2019 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2019,7,13: | 16
Vasopressors in obstetric anesthesia: A current perspective显示文摘Vasopressors are routinely used to counteract hypotension after neuraxial anesthesia in Obstetrics. The understanding of the mechanism of hypotension and the choice of vasopressor has evolved over the years to a point where phenylephrine has become the preferred vasopressor. Due to the absence of definitive evidence showing absolute clinical benefit of one over the other, especially in emergency and high-risk Cesarean sections, our choice of phenylephrine over the other vasopressors like mephentermine, metaraminol, and ephedrine is guided by indirect evidence on fetalacid-base status. This review article evaluates the present day evidence on the various vasopressors used in obstetric anesthesia today. | Deb Sanjay Nag Devi Prasad Samaddar Abhishek Chatterjee Himanshu Kumar Ankur Dembla | 2015 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2015,3,1: | 15

Comparative analysis of APACHE-Ⅱ and P-POSSUM scoring systems in predicting postoperative mortality in patients undergoing emergency laparotomy显示文摘BACKGROUND Laparotomy remains one of the commonest emergency surgical procedures.Early prognostic evaluation would aid in selecting the high-risk patients for an aggressive treatment.Awareness about risks could potentially contribute to the quality of perioperative care and optimum utilization of resources.Portsmouth modification of Physiological and operative severity for the enumeration of mortality and morbidity (P-POSSUM) and the acute physiology and chronic health evaluation Ⅱ(APACHE-Ⅱ) have been the most widely used scoring systems for emergency laparotomies. It is always better to have a single scoring system to predict outcomes and audit healthcare organizations.AIM To compare the ability of APACHE-II and P-POSSUM to predict postoperative morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing emergency laparotomy.METHODS All patients undergoing emergency laparotomy at the Tata Main Hospital,Jamshedpur between December 2013 and November 2014 were included in the study. In this observational study,P-POSSUM and APACHE-Ⅱ scoring were done, and the outcome analysis evaluated with mortality being the primary outcome.RESULTS For P-POSSUM,at a cut off value of 63 to predict mortality using receiver operating characteristics curve analysis, the area under the curve was 0.989;and for APACHE-Ⅱ,at the cut off value of 24,the area under the curve was 0.965.CONCLUSION Because the ability of APACHE-Ⅱ to predict mortality was similar to P-POSSUM and APACHE-Ⅱ does not need scoring for intra-operative findings and histopathology reports,APACHE-Ⅱ can be used pre-operatively to assess the risk in patients undergoing emergency laparotomy. However, for audit purposes, either of the two scoring systems can be used. | Deb Sanjay Nag Ankur Dembla Pratap Rudra Mahanty Shashi Kant Abhishek Chatterjee Devi Prasad Samaddar Parul Chugh | 2019 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2019,7,16: | 5

Humus-Rich Compost Increases Lettuce Growth, Nutrient Uptake, Mycorrhizal Colonisation, and Soil Fertility显示文摘Sandy soils, typical of Australia's west, either have little or no habitat protection for microbes including arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM) fungi, which are essential for nutrient cycling. To minimize this problem, the application of organic matter, such as humus-rich composts, is necessary during vegetable crop production. This study aimed at determining the effects of humus-rich composts on either indigenous or inoculated AM fungal colonisation in roots, lettuce(Lactuca sativa L. var. Quechua) growth, and soil fertility improvement. Four different humus-rich composts with varying humus contents were applied at the same standard rate to lettuce grown under glasshouse conditions for 10 weeks after sowing and compared with two low-humus composts and non-amended soil(control). Humus-rich composts significantly increased lettuce shoot growth, root growth, and AM fungal colonisation in roots. Humus contents in the composts were also correlated with lettuce shoot and root growth. Soil dissolved organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon, and fertility were increased with the application of humus-rich composts. These humus-rich composts, especially the compost of higher humic acid with and without AM inoculation, might have a significant role in sustainable vegetable production, for example lettuce growth. Overall, the results indicate that supplementation with humus-rich compost is highly beneficial to enhance soil fertility and potentially maintain the sustainability of vegetable production. | Zakaria M.SOLAIMAN Hongjun YANG Deb ARCHDEACON Orna TIPPETT Michaela TIBI Andrew S.WHITELEY | 2019 | Pedosphere2019,29,2: | 3
Effect of Punica granatum peel extract on learning and memory in rats显示文摘Objective:To evaluate potential memory enhancing effect of Punica granatum peel extract on rats. Methods:Healthy adult male albino rats of Wistar strain were used. Each group of 6 rats were administered either distilled water or 50 mg/kg of extract or 100 mg/kg of extract for 15 days and subjected to passive avoidance test or T-maze test.In the next phase rats were administered distilled water or 100 mg/kg of extract for 15 days and the rats were given injection diazepam before subjecting them to the tests. Results:The overall performance was better in test groups compared to control groups.Among the test groups,100 mg/kg rats performed better than 50 mg/kg.The effect on spatial learning parameters like mean number of alternations and mean percentage bias was more marked compared to retention testing parameters like latency. 100 mg/kg Punica extract treated group also improved performance of diazepam treated rats. Conclusions:There is a definite trend of memory improvement by Punica granatum peel with effects being more marked on spatial learning tendency and long term memory than on retention capacity. | Shalini Adiga Prabhav Trivedi Ravichandra V Debashree Deb Forum Mehta | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,9: | 3
Design of crown pillar thickness using finite element method and multivariate regression analysis显示文摘Minerals are now being extracted from deep mines due to drying up of resource in shallow ground. The need for suitable supports and ground control mechanisms for safe mining necessitates proper pillar design with filling technology. In addition, high horizontal stress may cause collapse of hanging wall and footwall rocks, hence designing of suitable crown pillars is absolutely necessary for imposing overall safety of the stopes. This paper provides a methodology for the evaluation of the required thickness of crown pillars for safe operation at depth ranging from 600 m to 1000 m. Analyses are conducted with the results of 108 non-linear numerical models considering Drucker-Prager material model in plane strain condition. Material properties of ore body rock and thickness of crown pillars are varied and safety factors of pillars estimated. Then, a generalized statistical relationship between the safety factors of crown pillars with the various input parameters is developed. The developed multivariate regression model is utilized for generating design/stability charts of pillars for different geo-mining conditions. These design charts can be used for the design of crown pillar thickness with the depth of the working, taking into account the changes of the rock mass conditions in underground metal mine. | Kumar Hemant Deb Debasis Chakravarty D. | 2017 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2017,27,6: | 3
Institutional arrangement and typology of community forests of Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland of North-East India显示文摘Most community forests in hill regions of northeast India have been managed by traditional local institutions for centuries and most of these institutions remain functional even today. Higher forest coverage on private and community lands as compared to government land indicates that traditional institutions effectively manage community forests in the region. The present study was conducted through a survey of literature and field work using participatory research tools viz., PRA exercises, group discussions and questionnaire interviews with key informants in northeast India. We categorized the institutions involved in conservation and management of forests into three major types: traditional, quasi-traditional and modern. Traditional institutions with hierarchal structure were found in all states and are intact and functional in the state of Meghalaya. Quasi-traditional institutions, a blend of traditional and modern institutions were prevalent in Nagaland while modern institutions have almost replaced traditional institutions in Mizoram. We recorded at least eleven types of community forests viz., group of village forest, village forest, restricted forest, sacred forest, clan forest, cemetery forest, regeneration forest, bamboo forest, recreation forest, village reserved forest and medicinal plantation in villages of three states. The tribal people, through long-term trial and error experiments, have developed an elaborate, functional and generally democratic system of conservation and management of forests and associated natural ecosystems. Several forest and natural resource management lessons can be learnt from the institutional structure and decision making system of the evolving and dynamic institutions of tribal communities of the region. | B. | 18 | Cholera:a great global concern显示文摘Cholera, caused by the infection of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae(V.cholerae) to humans,is a life threatening diarrheal disease with epidemic and pandemic potential. The V.cholerae, both 01 and 0139 serogroups, produce a potent enterotoxin(cholera toxin) responsible for the lethal symptoms of the disease. The O1 serogroup has two biotypes(phenotypes),classical and El Tor;each of which has two major serotypes(based on antigenic responses),Ogawa and Inaba and the extremely rare Hikojima.V.cholerae O1 strains interconvert and switch between the Ogawa and Inaba serotypes.Fluid and electrolyte replacement is the mainstay of treatment of cholera patients;the severe cases require antibiotic treatment to reduce the duration of illness and replacement of fluid intake. The antibiotic therapy cunenlly has faced difficulties due to the rapid emergence and spread o(multidrug resistant V.cholerae causing several outbreaks in the globe.Currently, cholera has been becoming endemic in an increasing number of geographical areas, reflecting a failure in implementation of control measures. However, the current safe oral vaccines lower the number of resistant infections and could thus represent an effective intervention measure to control antibiotic resistance in cholera.Overall, the priorities for cholera control remain public health interventions through improved drinking water, sanitation, surveillance and access to health care facilities, and lurther development of safe, effective and appropriate vaccines. Thus, this review describes the facts and phenomena related to the disease cholera, which is still a great threat mainly to the developing countries, and hence a grave global concern too. | Shyamapada Mandal Manisha Deb Mandal Nishith Kumar Pal | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,7: | 2
Adsorption of Hydrazoic Acid on Pristine Graphyne Sheet: A Computational Study显示文摘Herein we have investigated the interaction between hydrazoic acid(HN3) and a pristine graphyne system based on density functional theory(DFT) method using generalized gradient approximation. The van der Waals dispersion correction is also considered for predicting the possibility of using the graphyne system for detection of hydrazoic acid. Pristine graphyne has a band gap of 0.453 eV, which decreases to 0.424 eV when HN3 is adsorbed on graphyne. The electrical conductivity of HN3-adsorbed graphyne is greater than that of its pristine counterpart. Charge transfer analysis reveals that the HN3-adsorbed graphyne system behaves as an n-type semiconductor; however, its pristine analogue acts as an intrinsic semiconductor. Pristine graphyne has zero dipole moment; however, its interaction with HN3 increases its dipole moment. The electronic properties of graphyne is significantly influenced by the presence of HN3, leading to the possibility of designing graphyne-based sensors for HN3 detection. | DEB Jyotirmoy PAUL Debolina PEGU David SARKAR Utpal | 2018 | 物理化学学报2018,34,5: | 2
