1Vegetation cover density and disturbance affected arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi spore density and root colonization in a dry Afromontane forest, northern Ethiopia显示文摘Arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi(AMF) are vital in the regeneration of vegetation in disturbed ecosystems due to their numerous ecological advantages and therefore are good indicators of soil and ecosystem health at large. This study was aimed at determining how the seasonal, vegetation cover density, edaphic and anthropogenic factors affect AMF root colonization(RC) and spore density(SD)in Desa'a dry Afromontane forest. AMF RC and SD in the rhizosphere of five dominant woody species, Juniperus procera, Olea europaea, Maytenus arbutifolia, Carissa spinarum and Dodonaea angustifolia growing in Desa'a forest were studied during the rainy and the dry seasons in three permanent study vegetation cover density plots(dense, medium, and poor). Each plot(160 x40 m^2) has two management practices(fenced and unfenced plots) of area. A 100 g sample of rhizosphere soil from moisturefree composite soil was used to determine spore density.Spore density ranged from 50 to 4467 spores/100 g soil, and all species were colonized by AMF within a range of 4–95%. Glomus was the dominant genus in the rhizosphere of all species. Vegetation cover density strongly affected SD and RC. The SD was significantly higher(p < 0.05) in the poor vegetation cover density than in the other two and lowest in the dense cover; root colonization showed the reverse trend. Management practices significantly(p <0.05) influenced AMF SD and RC, with the fenced plots being more favoured. Seasons significantly(p < 0.05) affected RC and SD. More RC and SD were observed in the wet period than the dry period. Correlating AMF SD and RC with soil physical and chemical properties showed no significant difference(p> 0.05) except for total nitrogen. Disturbance, vegetation cover density, season and total nitrogen are significant factors that control the dynamics and management interventions to maintain the forest health of dry Afromontane forests.Emiru Birhane Nakiguli Fatumah Kidane Gidey Amanuel Zenebe Ssemwanga Mohammed 2018Journal of Forestry Research2018,29,3:5
280年来埃塞俄比亚北部高原土地利用/覆被变化(英文)显示文摘Despite many studies on land degradation in the Highlands of Northern Ethiopia, quantitative information regarding long-term changes in land use/cover(LUC) is rare. Hence, this study aims to investigate the LUC changes in the Geba catchment(5142 km2), Northern Ethiopia, over 80 years(1935–2014). Aerial photographs(APs) of the 1930 s and Google Earth(GE) images(2014) were used. The point-count technique was utilized by overlaying a grid on APs and GE images. The occurrence of cropland, forest, grassland, shrubland, bare land, built-up areas and water body was counted to compute their fractions. A multivariate adaptive regression spline was applied to identify the explanatory factors of LUC and to create fractional maps of LUC. The results indicate significant changes of most types, except for forest and cropland. In the 1930 s, shrubland(48%) was dominant, followed by cropland(39%). The fraction of cropland in 2014(42%) remained approximately the same as in the 1930 s, while shrubland significantly dropped to 37%. Forests shrank further from a meagre 6.3% in the 1930 s to 2.3% in 2014. High overall accuracies(93% and 83%) and strong Kappa coefficients(89% and 72%) for point counts and fractional maps respectively indicate the validity of the techniques used for LUC mapping.ETEFA Guyassa Amaury FRANKL Sil LANCKRIET BIADGILGN Demissie GEBREYOHANNES Zenebe AMANUEL Zenebe Jean POESEN Jan NYSSEN 2018Journal of Geographical Sciences2018,28,10:3
3Climate forcing of tree growth in dry Afromontane forest fragments of Northern Ethiopia:evidence from multi-species responses显示文摘Background: Climate-induced challenge remains a growing concern in the dry tropics, threatening carbon sink potential of tropical dry forests. Hence, understanding their responses to the changing climate is of high priority to facilitate sustainable management of the remnant dry forests. In this study, we examined the long-term climate-growth relations of main tree species in the remnant dry Afromontane forests in northern Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to assess the dendrochronological potential of selected dry Afromontane tree species and to study the influence of climatic variables (temperature and rainfall) on radial growth. It was hypothesized that there are potential tree species with discernible annual growth rings owing to the uni-modality of rainfall in the region. Ring width measurements were based on increment core samples and stem discs collected from a total of 106 trees belonging to three tree species (Juniperus procera, Olea europaea p. cuspidate and Podocarpus falcatus). Thesubsp. collected samples were prepared, crossdated, and analyzed using standard dendrochronological methods. The formation of annual growth rings of the study species was verified based on successful crossdatability and by correlating tree-ring widths with rainfall. Results: The results showed that all the sampled tree species form distinct growth boundaries though differences in the distinctiveness were observed among the species. Positive and significant correlations were found between the tree-ring widths and rainfall, implying that rainfall plays a vital role in determining tree growth in the region. The study confirmed the formation of annual growth rings through successful crossdating, thus highlighted the potential applicability of dendroclimatic studies in the region. Conclusions: Overall, the results proved the strong linkage between tree-ring chronologies and climate variability in the study region, which further strengthens the potential of dendrochronological studies developing in Ethiopia, and also has great implications for further paleo-climatic reconstructions and in the restoration of degraded lands. Further knowledge on the growth characteristics of tree species from the region is required to improve the network of tree-ring data and quality of the chronology so as to successfully reconstruct historic environmental changes.Zenebe Girmay Siyum J.O.Ayoade M.A.Onilude Motuma Tolera Feyissa 2019Forest Ecosystems2019,6,2:2
4Improving immunization capacity in Ethiopia through continuous quality improvement interventions:a prospective quasi-experimental study显示文摘Background:Strong scientific evidence is needed to support low-income countries in building effective and sustainable immunization programs and proactively engaging in global vaccine development and implementation initiatives. This study aimed to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of system-wide continuous quality improvement(CQI)interventions to improve national immunization programme performance in Ethiopia. Methods:The study used a prospective,quasi-experimental design with an interrupted time-series analysis to collect data from 781 government health sectors(556 healthcare facilities,196 district health offices, and 29 zonal health departments)selected from developing and emerging regions in Ethiopia.Procedures included baseline quality assessment of immunization programme and services using structured checklists;immunization systems strengthening using onsite technical support, training, and supportive supervision interventions in a Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle over 12 months;and collection and analysis of data at baseline and at the 6th and 12th month of interventions using statistical process control and the t-test.Outcome measures were the coverage of the vaccines pentavalent 3,measles,Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine(BCG),Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine(PCV),as well as full vaccination status;while process measures were changes in human resources, planning, service delivery, logistics and supply, documentation, coordination and collaboration, and monitoring and evaluation.Analysis and interpretation of data adhered to SQUIRE 2.0 guidelines. Results:Prior to the interventions, vaccination coverage was low and all seven process indicators had an aggregate score of below 50%,with significant differences in performance at healthcare facility level between developing and emerging regions(P=0.0001).Following the interventions, vaccination coverage improved significantly from 63.6%at baseline to 79.3%for pentavalent(P=0.0001),62.5 to 72.8%for measles(P=0.009),62.4 to 73.5%for BCG(P=0.0001),65.3 to 81.0%for PCV(P=0.02),and insignificantly from 56.2 to 74.2%for full vaccination. All seven process indicators scored above 75%in all regions, with no significant differences found in performance between developing and emerging regions. Conclusions:The CQI interventions improved immunization capacity and vaccination coverage in Ethiopia, where the unstable transmission patterns and intensity of infectious diseases necessitate for a state of readiness of the health system at all times. The approach was found to empower zone, district, and facility-level health sectors to exercise accountability and share ownership of immunization outcomes. While universal approaches can improve routine immunization, local innovative interventions that target local problems and dynamics are also necessary to achieve optimal coverage.Tsegahun Manyazewal Alemayehu Mekonnen Tesfa Demelew Semegnew Mengestu Yusuf Abdu Dereje Mammo Workeabeba Abebe Belay Haffa Daniel Zenebe Bogale Worku Amir Aman Setegn Tigabu 2018Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1:1

19Socio-ecological vulnerability to climate change/variability in central rift valley,Ethiopia显示文摘Climate change/variability and environmental degradation have increased in the central rift valley of Ethiopia, which in turn making the people inhabiting in that ecosystem more vulnerable to the impacts. The purposes of this study were to assess the vulnerability of households andagro-ecosystems to climate change and environmental degradation and the factors determining vulnerabilities in the central rift valley,Ethiopia.Data were collected between November 2014 and May 2015 by interviewing 355 respondents. This has been supplemented with focus group discussions and key informant interviews. The indicator and matrix methods were used to describe socio-ecological vulnerabilities. The resultsshowed that about 9%of the respondents were highly vulnerable to climate change/variability,and environmental degradation.Households in the lowland have the largest proportion of high vulnerable households(60%),while households in highland have the largest proportion of low vulnerable households(30%).In the lowland agro-ecology,the adaptive capacity component has contributed the largest share to household's vulnerability index to the impacts of climate change/variability and environmental degradation. The sensitivity component has higer contribution in highland agro-ecology and the exposure component in the midland agro-ecology.There were variations of income deviation between agro-ecologies that lead to variation in vulnerability of households.Household vulnerability index has shown a very light negative correlation with livelihood diversification index. The poorest households with little share of the total income distribution and with low livelihood diversity index, were the most vulnerable. The results showed that the highest exposure index on ecosystem functions and agricultural performance were in the lowland agro-ecology.This study highlighted the need to assess the social and ecological vulnerabilities in integrated approach as singling out one from the other is difficult. That is,social vulnerability impacts ecological vulnerability and vice versa.Zenebe MEKONNEN Teshale WOLDEAMANUEL Habtemariam KASSA 2019Advances in Climate Change Research2019,10,1:1
