| 1 | Evaluation of extracts and essential oil from Callistemon viminalis leaves:Antibacterial and antioxidant activities,total phenolic and flavonoid contents显示文摘Objective:To investigate antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Callistemon viminalis(C.viminalis)leaves.Methods:The essential oil of C.viminalis leaves obtained by hydrodistillation was analyzed by GC/MS.Different extracts were tested for total phenolic and flavonoid contents and in vitro antioxidant(DPPH assay)and antibacterial(agar disc diffusion and 96-well micro-plates methods)actives.Results:Fourteen components were identified in the essential oil,representing 98.94%of the total oil.The major components were 1,8-cineole(64.53%)andα-pinene(9.69%).Leaf essential oil exhibited the highest antioxidant activity of(88.60±1.51)%comparable to gallic acid,a standard compound[(80.00±2.12)%].Additionally,the biggest zone of inhibitions against the studied bacterial strains was observed by the essential oil when compared to the standard antibiotic(tetracycline).The crude methanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction had a significant antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial strains.Conclusions:It can be suggested that C.viminalis is a great potential source of antibacterial and antioxidant compounds useful for new antimicrobial drugs from the natural basis.The present study revealed that the essential oil as well as the methanol extracts and ethyl acetate fraction of C.viminalis leaves exhibited highly significant antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial strains. | Mohamed ZM Salem Hayssam M Ali Nader A El-Shanhorey Ahmed Abdel-Megeed | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2013，6，10： | 14 |

| 4 | Survival factors after resection of small hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Early resection of hepatocellular carcinoma is a key measure to prolong the survival of patients. This study was designed to summarize our experience in surgical resection of small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and to analyze the factors influencing the postoperative survival of patients. METHODS:The clinicopathologic data of 105 patients with small HCC after resection from 1986 through 2003 were analyzed ; the patients had been followed up for more than half a year (median 33 months). Nine clinicopathologic factors, preoperative α-fetoprotein (AFP) level, liver cirrhosis, Child-Pugh score, tumor size (>2cm vs.≤2 cm) and number (single vs. multiple), capsule formation, portal vein tumor thrombi (PVTT), Edmondson tumor grade and surgical method, were analyzed by the log-rank test and the Cox proportional harzards model analysis. RESULTS:The cumulative 1-,3- and 5-year survival rates after the operation were 86.5%, 70.3% and 55.2%, respectively, and the 1-, 3- and 5-year disease-free survival rates were 78%, 58. 9% and 45. 6%, respectively. One patient died from esophagogastric varices hemorrhage in 2 weeks after reoperation. Thirty-six patients had intrahepatic recurrence or metastasis postoperatively and 34 patients died. The Kaplan-Meier method and the Cox proportional harzards model analysis indicated that poor Child-Pugh score, tumor more than 2 cm in diameter, PVTT and multiple lesions (including satellitic lesions) were adverse factors affecting postoperative survival. The Cox proportional harzards model analysis indicated that tumor size, PVTT and multiple lesions were the factors influencing postoperative disease-free survival. CONCLUSIONS:Limited hepatectomy with a margin more than 1 cm is an appropriate surgical approach. | 6 | Inhibitory activity of polysaccharide extracts from three kinds of edible fungi on proliferation of human hepatoma SMMC-7721 cell and mouse implanted S180 tumor显示文摘AIM To determine the activities ofpolysaccharide extracts from Flammulina velutipes (Curt. ex Fr. ) Sing (FV), Lentinusedodes (LE) and Agaricus bisporus Sing (AB)on the proliferation of human hepatoma SMMC-7721 cells in vitro and on mouse implanted S-180tumors in vivo.METHODS The polysaccharide extracts were isolated from the fruit bodies of FV, LE and AB by the methods of hot-water extraction, Sevag’sremoval of proteins, ethanol precipitation,trypsin digestion and ethanol fractionalprecipitation. Human hepatoma SMMC-7721 cells were treated with 50 mg/L Polysaccharide extracts, and the mitosis index, mitochondria activity and cell proliferation were detected at different times in both control and experimental groups. The mice with S-180 implanted tumors were injected with the polysaccharide extracts at 24 mg/ kg body weight for 9 d and the tumorweight was measured on the 15th day.RESULTS The mitosis index of hepatoma cells in vitro could be significantly decreased by treatment with the polysaccharide extracts fromthe three kinds of edible fungi (P < 0 .005 ). Thecell numbers and mitochondria activity of SMMC7721 cells treated with polysaccharide extracts were lower than those in control groups (P <0.005). | 11 | Rapid isolation and identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from pulmonary tuberculosis patients显示文摘Objective:The Study aimed to develop a rapid inexpensive and simple method for preliminary isolation and detection of M.tuberculosis from clinical specimens.Also to probe the impact of deteriorating health measures on the pulmonary tuberculosis control program in Basra city.Methods:A simple monophasic-diphasic setup (MDCS) was used for the isolation and preliminary identification of M.tuberculosis.This setup consists of a slanted Lowenstein-Jensen medium,the bottom of it is covered with 1 mL of tuberculosis broth thus establishing a diphasic solid liquid environment at the bottom of the screw capped test tube and above them a monophasic one.Results:During 7 months period from the beginning of December 2003 to the end of June 2004,1 295 cases were managed in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases Clinic in Basra city.Only 348 cases were diagnosed as active pulmonary tuberculosis.They consist of 232 new cases and 116 previously registered ones.The MDCS method showed higher recovery of isolation rate of M.tuberculosis(92.3%) than Lowenstein-Jensen,and pyruvate methods with 78.1%and 51.9%respectively.Also this method revealed more rapid appearance of results of 12 days than Lowenstein-Jensen,and pyruvate media with 22 days and 23 days respectively by the traditional culturing methods.Concurrently the study revealed that drug resistance against one or more anti tuberculosis drugs was 23.1%for new cases and 70.8%for the old ones.Multi drug resistance accounts for 20%of total isolates from old cases.This was based on using the critical concentration and 1%proportional procedures.Tuberculosis was more common among males than females with 69.4%and 30.6%respectively. A significant correlation(P<0.05) was found between the productive age group(25-54) and incidence of tuberculosis. Tuberculosis was higher among married(83.8%) than unmarried peoples(22%).Children,husbands and wives showed higher infection rates than others indicating kinship influence.Failure of treatment was highly affected by improper use of anti tuberculosis drugs.Conclusion:The MDCS method exhibited several advantages over other culturing techniques exemplified by elimination of transport medium,establishment of simultaneous but two separate environments to accomplish both the detection and preliminary identification of M.tuberculosis,providing flexibility in the kinds of media used in the liquid and solid phases and it is inexpensive. | Al-Sulami AA Ali ZM Al-Maleky DA | 2009 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2009，2，3： | 3 |
