1In situ simultaneous determination of trace elements,U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes in zircon and baddeleyite显示文摘This paper describes a combined method of simultaneously measuring U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes as well as trace elements in Phalaborwa baddeleyite and 91500, GJ-1, TEMORA-1 and SK10-2 zircons by means of Neptune MC-ICPMS and Agilent Q-ICPMS connected to a 193 nm excimer laser ablation system. Material ablated by laser was carried in different proportions into Q-ICPMS for U-Pb isotopic and trace elemental and MC-ICPMS for Lu-Hf isotopic compositions. Experiments indicate that different proportions of ablated material for the Q-ICPMS and MC-ICPMS (6:4, 5:5 and 4:6 respectively) do not show any bias for the zircon/baddeleyite U-Pb age, Lu-Hf isotope and trace elemental compositions within ana-lytical errors. Using 40―60 μm spot size, the obtained U-Pb ages of Phalaborwa baddeleyite, 91500, GJ-1, TEMORA and SK10-2 zircons are 2065±15 (2σ, n=20), 1063±6 (2σ, n=19), 613±6 (2σ, n=20), 416±5 (2σ, n=20) and 32.6±0.5 (2σ, n=20) Ma, respectively. The 176Hf/177Hf ratios are 0.281231±24 (2SD, n=20), 0.282310±35 (2SD, n=19), 0.282028±34 (2SD, n=20), 0.282687±34 (2SD, n=20) and 0.282752±53 (2SD, n=20), respectively. The obtained trace elemental compositions are identical to the reference values. 2Hf isotopes of the 3.8 Ga zircons in eastern Hebei Province, China: Implications for early crustal evolution of the North China Craton显示文摘Zircon U-Pb dating indicates that the fuchsite quartzite in eastern Hebei Province was derived from weathering and erosion of the 3.6-3.8 Ga granitic rocks. In-situ zircon Hf analyses show that the Lu-Hf isotopic system remained closed during later thermal disturbances. Zircons with concordant ages have Hf isotopic model ages of about 3.8 Ga, suggesting a recycling of this ancient crust. The ~3.8 Ga zircons have similar Hf isotopic compositions to those of chondrite, indicating that their source rocks (granitic rocks) were derived from partial melting of the juvenile crust which originated from a mantle without significant crust-mantle differentiation. Therefore, it is proposed that there was no large-scale crustal growth before ~3.8 Ga in eastern Hebei Province. 3Palaeoproterozoic Khondalite Belt in the western North China Craton: New evidence from SHRIMP dating and Hf isotope composition of zircons from metamorphic rocks in the Bayan Ul-Helan Mountains area显示文摘Zircom U-Pb age and Hf isotope analyses were made on gneissic granite and garnet-mica two-feldspar gneiss from the Helanshan Group in the Bayan Ul-Helan Mountains area, the western block of the North China Craton (NCC). Zircons from the gneissic granite commonly show core-mantle-rim structures, with magmatic core, metamorphic mantle and rim having ages of 2323±20 Ma, 1923±28 Ma and 1856±12 Ma, respectively. The core, mantle and rim show similar Hf isotope compositions, with single-stage depleted mantle model ages (TDM1) of 2455 to 2655 Ma (19 analyses). Most of the detrital zircons from the garnet-mica two-feldspar paragneiss have a concentrated U-Pb age distribution, with a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 1978±17 Ma. A few detrital zircons are older (2871 to 2469 Ma). The age for metamorphic overgrown rim was not determined because of strong Pb loss due to their high U content. The zircons show large variation in Hf isotope composition, with TDM1 ages of 1999 to 3047 Ma. In com- bination with previous studies, the main conclusions are as follows: (1) protolith of the khondalite se- ries in the Helanshan Group formed during Palaeoproterozoic rather than the Archaean as previously considered; (2) The results lend support to the contention that there is a huge Palaeoproterozoic Khondalite (metasedimentary) Belt between the Yinshan Mountains Block and the Ordos Block in the Western Block of NCC; (3) The widely-distributed bodies of early Palaeoproterozoic orthogneisses in the Khondalite Belt might be one of the important sources for detritus material in the khondalite series; (4) Collision between the Yinshan Block, the Ordos Block and the Eastern Block occurred in the same tectonothermal event of late Palaeoproterozoic, resulting in the final assembly of the NCC.DONG ChunYan LIU DunYi LI JunJian WAN YuSheng ZHOU HongYing LI ChengDong YANG YueHeng XIE LieWen 2007Chinese Science Bulletin2007,52,21:52
4In situ Nd isotopic measurement of natural geological materials by LA-MC-ICPMS显示文摘Using newly determined Sm isotopic abundances for correcting the isobaric interference of 144Sm on 144Nd and the established mass bias relationship between Sm and Nd, a series of in situ Nd isotopic measurements were conducted for relatively high Nd concentrations of natural geological materials, including apatite, titanite, monazite and perovskite on a Neptune multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS), coupled to a 193 nm ArF excimer laser ablation system. The results show that Ce has no significant influence on the precision and accuracy of Nd isotopic analyses for LREE-enriched geological minerals and that our approach is efficient in obtaining reliable 143Nd/144Nd and 147Sm/144Nd ratios for those materials with Sm/Nd<1 (147Sm/144Nd<0.6). 5In situ U-Pb dating of titanite by LA-ICPMS显示文摘Titanite is an ideal mineral for U-Pb isotopic dating because of its relatively high U,Th and Pb contents.Here,we developed a technique for U-Pb dating of titanite using the 193 nm ArF laser-ablation system and Agilent 7500a Q-ICP-MS.Standards of titanite (BLR-1 and OLT-1) and zircon (91500 and GJ-1) were dated using single spot and line raster scan analytical methods.To check the matrix effect,titanite (BLR-1) and zircon (91500) standards were analyzed as the external standards.The weighted mean 206 Pb/238 U ages of OLT-1 titanite are 1015±5 Ma (2,n=24) and 1017±6 Ma (2,n=24) by single spot and line raster scan analyses,respectively,using BLR-1 titanite as the external standard.These ages are consistent with its reference age of about 1014 Ma.However,using 91500 zircon as the external standard,the weighted mean 206 Pb/238 U ages are 917±4 Ma (2,n=24) and 927±5 Ma (2,n=24) for BLR-1 titanite,and 891±4 Ma (2,n=24) and 901±5 Ma (2,n=24) for OLT-1 titanite by single spot and line raster scan analyses,respectively.It is evident that these ages are ~12% younger than their reference values.Our results reveal that significant matrix effect does exist between different kinds of minerals during LA-ICPMS U-Pb age determination,whereas it is insignificant between same minerals.Therefore,same mineral must be used as the external standard for fractionation corrections during in situ LA-ICPMS U-Pb age analysis.In addition,we determined U-Pb ages for titanites from the Early Cretaceous Fangshan pluton,which indicates a rapid cooling history of this pluton.SUN JinFeng YANG JinHui wu FuYuan XIE LieWen YANG YueHeng LIU ZhiChao LI XianHua 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,20:14
6Hf isotopes of zircon megacrysts from the Cenozoic basalts in eastern China显示文摘Cenozoic basalts are widely distributed in east- ern China, and some of them contain zircon megacrysts which are considered to be constituent mineral of the sub- continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) and petrogenetically related to mantle metasomatism induced by addition of crustal materials. Using the Laser Ablation Multiple Collec- tor Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS), zircon megacrysts from the Cenozoic ba- salts at Changle in Shandong, Mingxi in Fujian, and Penglai in Hainan provinces have been used for Hf isotopic analyses. The data indicate that there is no significant deviation for the different zircon grains in each locale, except those from Penglai. The obtained 176Hf /177Hf ratios are 0.28302 — 0.28308 for Changle, 0.28297—0.28300 for Mingxi, and 0.28288—0.28293 for Penglai, with corresponding εHf values of 8.7—10.8, 7.0—7.9, and 3.9—5.7, respectively. These data display that there existed some regional heterogeneity, but the Hf model ages clustere in the Phanerozoic. Therefore, it is inferred that metasomatism of the lithospheric mantle be- neath eastern China took place in the Phanerozoic, most probably in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic. 7In situ calcite U-Pb geochronology by high-sensitivity single-collector LA-SF-ICP-MS显示文摘U-Pb geochronology of calcite using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is an emerging method,with potential applications to a vast array of geological problems.Due to the low levels of U and Pb in calcite,measurement using higher-sensitivity instruments,such as sector field (SF) ICP-MS,have advantages over more commonly used quadrupole (Q) ICP-MS instruments.Using a Thermo Element XR ICP-MS,we demonstrate that the Jet+X cone combination with the N_(2) enhancement technique provides the best sensitivity for measuring U and Pb isotopes.This higher sensitivity improves the precision of calcite U-Pb isotope measurements,and permits dating at high spatial resolutions (<110μm) and for samples containing low contents of^(238)U (<1μg g^(–1)) and/or^(207)Pb (i.e.,young samples<10 Ma).Using a spot size of 85μm with a low fluence (~2.0 J cm^(–2)),the laser-induced elemental fractionation of^(206)Pb/^(238)U in the NIST SRM 614,ARM-3 and WC-1 reference materials are insignificant (<2.2%).Adopting the optimized instrument parameters,we analysed four commonly-used calcite U-Pb reference materials (WC-1,Duff Brown Tank,JT,and ASH-15).The results match well with published isotope dilution data,demonstrating the reliability of our technique.ARM-3,an andesitic glass,is shown to be an appropriate reference material for both^(207)Pb/^(206)Pb calibration and instrument optimization because of its moderate contents of U(~3.75μg g^(–1)) and Pb (~12.7μg g^(–1)).We further demonstrate that the image-guided approach using LA-ICP-MS elemental mapping is an efficient tool in obtaining robust ages.Shitou WU Yueheng YANG Nick M.W.ROBERTS Ming YANG Hao WANG Zhongwu LAN Bohang XIE Tianyi LI Lei XU Chao HUANG Liewen XIE Jinhui YANG Fuyuan WU 2022Science China Earth Sciences2022,65,6:6
8KV01 zircon—A potential New Archean reference material for microbeam U-Pb age and Hf-O isotope determinations显示文摘To meet the rapid development of zircon U-Pb geochronology and Hf-O isotope geochemistry,it is imperative to develop well-characterized zircon reference materials for microbeam analysis.Here,zircon KV01 separated from the Kaap Valley pluton,South Africa is introduced as a potential Archean reference material for microbeam U-Pb age and Hf-O isotope determination.SIMS and LA-ICP-MS U-Pb isotopic measurements gave grand mean 207Pb/206Pb ages of 3233±16 Ma(2 s,n=90)and 3230±26 Ma(2 s,n=52),which are consistent with reported CA-ID-TIMS results.Slight heterogeneity of oxygen isotopes is revealed by SIMS analyses that yielded a relatively largeδ18O range of 4.61–6.51‰.Among them,the zircon grains with clear oscillatory zones give a grand meanδ18O value of 6.17±0.33‰(2 s),which is suggested to record the primary O isotopic compositions.The homogeneity in the Hf isotopic compositions of KV01 zircon was checked by the laser ablation and solution MC-ICP-MS methods.They yielded consistent results with a recommended 176Hf/177Hf ratio of 0.280810±0.000013(2 s).The results reported here demonstrate that KV01 zircon could be a reliable reference material for microbeam 207Pb/206Pb age and Hf isotope determinations of ancient zircons,and be suitable as a quality monitor for SIMS oxygen isotopic analysis.Qindi WEI Hao WANG Yueheng YANG Jinhui YANG Chao HUANG Shitou WU Liewen XIE 2020Science China Earth Sciences2020,63,11:3
9In situ determination of hafnium isotopes from rutile using LA-MC-ICP-MS显示文摘The hafnium isotopic analysis using laser ablation has been widely conducted on Hf-rich minerals(zircon/baddeleyite/ calzirtite/eudialyte), however, little work has been reported on Hf-poor(<100 ppm) minerals. This work presents a detailed procedure of in situ hafnium isotopic analysis from rutile using laser ablation multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(LA-MC-ICP-MS). The rutile U-Pb dating reference material JDX shows homogeneous hafnium isotopic ratios, with 176Hf/177Hf=0.281795±0.000015(2SD, n=33) and 176Lu/177Hf=0.000018±0.000004(2SD, n=17) that suggest the possibility of using JDX as a new reference material hafnium isotopic measurement. We also measure hafnium isotopic compositions of other rutile U-Pb dating reference material(R10, Sugluk-4 and PCA-S207) and the 176Hf/177 Hf values are similar to previously reported results, which confirms that we can acquire accurate and precise hafnium isotopic compositions using our developed analytical protocol. 11In situ Rb-Sr dating of mica by LA-ICP-MS/MS显示文摘Mica exhibits a relatively high Rb/Sr ratio and possesses a closure temperature for the Rb-Sr isotope system that is higher than the ore-forming temperature range of low-to medium-temperature deposits.Consequently,utilizing the laser ablation(LA)technique for in situ Rb-Sr dating in mica constitutes a significant methodology for resolving the mineralization chronology of low-to medium-temperature hydrothermal ore deposits.In this study,we employed a combination of a triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer(ICP-MS/MS)and 193 nm LA system with SF_6as the reaction gas to achieve interference removal of~(87)Rb~+on~(87)Sr~+.We then developed an in situ Rb-Sr dating method for mica.In addition,an investigation was conducted to identify the factors that could influence the analytical accuracy of the method.Subsequently,we applied the developed method to carry out in situ Rb-Sr dating for the ZBH-25 biotite,a national primary reference material(GBW04439)for K-Ar dating,and yielded a younger age(ca.12%,relative standard deviation,RSD)than the reference K-Ar age when using NIST SRM 610 as the reference material for external calibration.This finding indicated that in the process of determining Rb-Sr ages for mica by LA-ICP-MS/MS,there are significant matrix effects between the NIST SRM 610 and the mica samples,resulting in inaccurate Rb-Sr ages.In response to this issue,a two-step calibration method is proposed here.Based on external calibration using NIST SRM 610,ZBH-25 biotite is employed as a second external reference material to perform a second calibration of the sample data to correct the matrix effect between the glass standards and the natural mica samples,thereby improving the accuracy of Rb-Sr dating by LA-ICP-MS/MS.Using the proposed method,in situ Rb-Sr dating by LA-ICP-MS/MS was performed on mica samples from monzonite exposed in Mt.Dromedary,New South Wales,Australia,porphyritic granodiorite in Fangshan pluton and albionite granite in the Gyirong area of Tibet.The obtained Rb-Sr age results show agreement with the recommended values within the analytical uncertainty,which serves to validate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method.Chao HUANG Hao WANG Wenbei SHI Jinfeng SUN Fangyang HU Lei XU Yueheng YANG Shitou WU Liewen XIE Jinhui YANG 2023Science China Earth Sciences2023,66,11:0

13Zircon Hf isotope composition of metamorphic eclogite from Xindian,Dabie Terrain显示文摘Hf isotope measurement has been carried out for UHP metamorphic eclogite from Xindian by using LA-MC-ICP-MS technique. The result indicates that metamorphic growth zircon has high 176Hf/177Hf (0.282544―0.282612) and low 176Lu/177Hf (0.000004―0.000211) ratio,inherited and recrystallized proto-lith zircon has low 176Hf/177Hf (0.282266―0.282466) and high 176Lu/177Hf (0.000090―0.002144) composi-tions. The low 176Lu/177Hf of growth zircon comes from its decreasing of Lu and increasing of Hf during UHP process. The high 176Hf/177Hf deduced from high radiogenic 176Hf,which was produced from long-term evolution of high Lu/Hf ratio minerals. Partial recrystallization of protolith zircon would not cause reworking of Lu/Hf isotope in zircon. Compared to U-Pb,zircon Lu-Hf system has better stability. The initial Hf isotope composition of metamorphic growth zircon may represent the Hf isotope compo-sition of whole rock system at the same time.
