Theoretical analyses and numerical experiments of variational assimilation for one-dimensional ocean temperature model with techniques in inverse problems显示文摘In the present work, the data assimilation problem in meteorology and physical oceanography is re-examined using the variational optimal control approaches in combination with regularization techniques in inverse problem. Here the estimations of the initial condition, boundary condition and model parameters are performed simultaneously in the framework of variational data assimilation. To overcome the difficulty of ill-posedness, especially for the model parameters distributed in space and time, an additional term is added into the cost functional as a stabilized functional. Numerical experiments show that even with noisy observations the initial conditions and model parameters are recovered to an acceptable degree of accuracy.HUANG Sixun1,2, HAN Wei1 & WU Rongsheng2 1. 2Vertical dynamic and thermodynamic characteristics of urban lower boundary layer and its relationship with aerosol concentration over Beijing显示文摘By utilizing observational data from a 325 m tower of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on March 19-29, 2001 and August 11-25, 2003, a comprehensive study was conducted on the vertical dynamical and thermodynamic characteristics of the urban lower boundary layer (ULBL) and its relationship with aerosol concentration over Beijing. Firstly, a comparative analysis was made on the gradient data (wind, temperature and humidity), ultrasonic data (atmospheric turbulences) and air-quality observations at different tower heights (47, 120 and 280 m). Secondly, a diagnosis was made to reveal the major features of normalized variances of velocity and temperature, turbulence kinetic energy as well as their relationship with aerosol concentrations. Furthermore, the characteristics of the ULBL vertical structure and the TSP concentration/distribution variations during a sand/dust weather process were also analyzed. The outcome of the study showed that under unstable stratification, the normalized variances of velocity (σu/u*, σv/u*, σw/u*) and temperature (σT/T*) at 47 and 120 m heights fit the Monin-Obukhov similarity (MOS) framework and the fitting formulas were given out accordingly. According to the stratification parameter (z′/L), the stable ULBL could be divided into 2 zones. With z′/L<0.1, it was a weakly stable zone and MOS framework was applicable. The other was a highly stable zone with z′/L>0.1 and the normalized velocity variances tended to increase along with higher stability, but it remained constant for normalized temperature variances. At daytime, the near-surface layer includes two heights of 47 and 120 m, while 280 m has been above it. The ULBL analysis in conjunction with a sand/dust weather process in Beijing in March 2001 indicated that the maximum concentration of Total Suspended Particulates (TSP) at 320 m reached 913.3 μg/m3 and the particles were transported from the upper to lower ULBL, which was apparently related to the development process of a low-level jet and its concomitant strong sinking motion.ZHOU Mingyu, YAO Wenqing, XU Xiangde & YU Haiqing State Key Laboratory on Severe Weather, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Beijing 100081, China National Marine Environment Forecasting Center, Beijing 100081, China National Meteorological Center, Beijing 100081, China 2005Science China Earth Sciences2005,48,z2:11
Possible mechanism of the effect of convection over Asian-Australian “land bridge” on the East Asian summer monsoon onset显示文摘The Asian-Australian “land bridge” is an area with the most vigorous convection in Asian monsoon region in boreal spring, where the onset and march of convection are well associated with the onset of East Asian summer monsoon. The convection occurs over Indo-China Peninsula as early as mid-April, which exerts critical impact on the evolution of monsoon circulation. Before mid-April there are primarily sensible heatings to the atmosphere over Indo-China Peninsula and Indian Peninsula, so the apparent heating ratios over them decrease with height. However, after mid-April it changes into latent heating over Indo-China Peninsula due to the onset of convection, and the apparent heating ratio increases with height in mid- and lower troposphere. The vertical distribution of heating ratio and its differences between Indo-China Peninsula and Indian Peninsula are the key factors leading to the splitting of boreal subtropical high belt over the Bay of Bengal. Such mechanism is strongly supported by the fact that the evolution of the vertical heating ratio gradient above Indo-China Peninsula leads that of 850 hPa vorticity over the Bay of Bengal. Convections over Indo-China Peninsula and its surrounding areas further increase after the splitting. Since then, there is a positive feedback lying among the convective heating, the eastward retreat of the subtropical high and the march of monsoon, which is a possible mechanism of the advance of summer monsoon and convection from Indo-China Peninsula to South China Sea.HE Jinhai1, WEN Min2, DING Yihui3 & ZHANG Renhe2 1. 4A semi-implicit semi-Lagrangian global nonhydrostatic model and the polar discretization scheme显示文摘The Global/Regional Assimilation and PrEdiction System(GRAPES) is a newly developed global non-hydrostatic numerical prediction model, which will become the next generation medium-range opera-tional model at China Meteorological Administration(CMA).The dynamic framework of GRAPES is featuring with fully compressible equations, nonhydrostatic or hydrostatic optionally,two-level time semi-Lagrangian and semi-implicit time integration,Charney-Phillips vertical staggering, and complex three-dimensional pre-conditioned Helmholtz solver, etc.Concerning the singularity of horizontal momentum equations at the poles, the polar discretization schemes are described, which include adoption of Arakawa C horizontal grid with ν at poles, incorporation of polar filtering to maintain the computational stability, the correction to Helmholtz equation near the poles,as well as the treatment of semi-Lagrangian interpolation to improve the departure point accuracy, etc. The balanced flow tests validate the rationality of the treatment of semi-Lagrangian departure point calculation and the polar discretization during long time integration.Held and Suarez tests show that the conservation proper-ties of GRAPES model are quite good.YANG XueSheng1,CHEN JiaBin2,HU JiangLin1,CHEN DeHui1,SHEN XueShun1,ZHANG HongLiang1 1 State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather,Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences,Beijing 100081,China 2 State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics,Institute of Atmospheric Physics,Beijing 100029,China 2007Science China Earth Sciences2007,50,12:9
Latest progress on interactions between VLF/ELF waves and energetic electrons in the inner magnetosphere显示文摘Interactions between very/extremely low frequency (VLF/ELF) waves and energetic electrons play a fundamental role in dynamics occurring in the inner magnetosphere. Here, we briefly discuss global properties of VLF/ELF waves, along with the variability of the electron radiation belts associated with wave-particle interactions and radial diffusion. We provide cases of electron loss and acceleration as a result of wave-particle interactions primarily due to such waves, and particularly some preliminary results of 3D evolution of phase space density from our currently developing 3D code. We comment on the existing mechanisms responsible for acceleration and loss, and identify several critical issues that need to be addressed. We review latest progress and suggest open questions for future investigation.XIAO FuLiang1,2, ZONG QiuGang3, SU ZhenPeng4, TIAN Tian3 & ZHENG HuiNan4 1 School of Physics and Electronic Sciences, Changsha University of Science and Technology, Changsha 410004, China 2 State Key Laboratory of Space Weather, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China 3 Institute of Space Physics and Applied Technology, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China 4 CAS Key Lab for Basic Plasma Science, School of Earth and Space Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230026, China 2010Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,3:8
Urban effects and summer thunderstorms in a tropical cyclone affected situation over Guangzhou city显示文摘With data mainly from Guangzhou mesonet Automatic Weather Stations(AWS),Guangzhou Doppler Radar and satellite TBB data, characteristics and evolution of the urban heat island(UHI) over Guang-zhou City were analyzed in a tropical cyclone affected situation for early August 2005.In particular, two thunderstorms occurring during this period respectively at the night of 4 August and in the afternoon of 7 August were investigated to study the relationships between the development of thunderstorms and the UHI.Results showed that two thunderstorms were associated with the UHI effects.UHI induced local air convergence and initiated the thunderstorm convections. Both cases showed a general agreement in time and space for the locations of maximum UHI,convergence, convection, and pre-cipitation.Convection was found to be more favorable to developing in time periods and locations with stronger intensity of UHI.Analysis also showed that, due to the urban effects, both thunderstorms got strengthened when moving over Guangzhou City, with maximum radar echoes observed right over the urban area and precipitation located within the city. All these features reveal that two thunderstorms were urban-induced storms.MENG WeiGuang1,3,YAN JingHua1 & HU HaiBo2 1 Institute of Tropical and Marine Meteorology,Chinese Meteorological Administration(CMA),Guangzhou 510080,China 2 Institute of Urban Meteorology,CMA,Beijing 100089,China 3 State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather,Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences,Beijing 100081,China 2007Science China Earth Sciences2007,50,12:8
Dynamic evolution of outer radiation belt electrons driven by superluminous R-X mode waves显示文摘We present initial results on the temporal evolution of the phase space density (PSD) of the outer radiation belt energetic electrons driven by the superluminous R-X mode waves. We calculate diffusion rates in pitch angle and momentum assuming the standard Gaussian distributions in both wave frequency and wave normal angle at the location L=6.5. We solve a 2D momentum-pitch-angle Fokker-Planck equation using those diffusion rates as inputs. Numerical results show that R-X mode can produce significant acceleration of relativistic electrons around geostationary orbit, supporting previous findings that superluminous waves potentially contribute to dramatic variation in the outer radiation belt electron dynamics.XIAO FuLiang1,2, CHEN LiangXu1, HE YiHua1 & YANG Chang1 1 School of Physics and Electronic Sciences, Changsha University of Science and Technology, Changsha 410004, China 2 State Key Laboratory of Space Weather, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,10:7
A comparative study on 3-D solar wind structure observed by Ulysses and MHD simulation显示文摘During Ulysses’ first rapid pole-to-pole transit from September 1994 to June 1995, its observations showed that middle- or high-speed solar winds covered all latitudes except those between ?20° and +20° near the ecliptic plane, where the velocity was 300―450 km/s. At poleward 40°, however, only fast solar winds at the speed of 700―870 km/s were observed. In addition, the transitions from low-speed wind to high-speed wind or vice versa were abrupt. In this paper, the large-scale structure of solar wind observed by Ulysses near solar minimum is simulated by using the three-dimensional numerical MHD model. The model com- bines TVD Lax-Friedrich scheme and MacCormack II scheme and decomposes the calculation region into two re- gions: one from 1 to 22 Rs and the other from 18 Rs to 1 AU. Based on the observations of the solar photospheric magnetic field and an addition of the volumetric heating to MHD equations, the large-scale solar wind structure mentioned above is reproduced by using the three-dimensional MHD model and the numerical results are roughly consistent with Ulysses’ observations. Our simulation shows that the initial magnetic field topology and the addition of volume heating may govern the bimodal structure of solar wind observed by Ulysses and also demonstrates that the three-dimensional MHD numerical model used here is efficient in modeling the large-scale solar wind structure.FENG Xueshang, XIANG Changqing, ZHONG Dingkun & FAN Quanlin SIGMA Weather Group, Key Laboratory of Space Weather Key Labo- ratory of Geospace Environment and Geodesy, Ministry of Education, Center for Space Science and Applied Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100080, China 2005Chinese Science Bulletin2005,50,7:6
Ozone Profile Retrieval from Satellite Observation Using High Spectral Resolution Infrared Sounding Instrument显示文摘This paper presents a preliminary result on the retrieval of atmospheric ozone profiles using an im- proved regression technique and utilizing the data from the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS), a hyper-spectral Instrument expected to be flown on the EOS-AQUA platform in 20D2. Simulated AIRS spectra were used to study the sensitivity of AIRS radiance on the tropospheric and stratospheric ozone changes, and to study the impact of various channel combinations on the ozone profile retrieval. Sensitivity study results indicate that the AIRS high resolution spectral channels between the wavenumber 650- 800 cm-1 provide very useful information to accurately retrieve tropospheric and stratospheric ozone pro- files Eigenvector decomposition of AIRS spectra indicate that no more than 100 eigenvectors are needed to retrieve very accurate ozone profiles. The accuracy of the retrieved atmospheric ozone profile from the pres- ent technique and utilizing the AIRS data was compared with the accuracy obtained from current Advanced TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS) data aboard National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admini- stration (NOAA) satellites As expected, a comparison of retrieval results confirms that the ozone profile re- trieved with the AIRS data is superior to that ofYanni Qu, Mitchell D. 10Changes in the spatial scale of Beijing UHI and urban development显示文摘The seasonal and interannual variations of Beijing urban heat island (UHI) are investigated in this paper using the temperature data from 1960 to 2000 at 20 meteorological stations in the Beijing region, and then the relationship between the intensity and spatial scale of UHI and Beijing urbanization indices is analyzed and discussed. Main conclusions are the followings. First, Beijing UHI shows obvious seasonal variations, and it is strongest in winter, next in spring and autumn, and least in summer. The seasonal variation of the UHI mainly occurs in the urban area. The UHI intensity at the center of Beijing is more than 0.8℃ in winter, and only 0.5℃ in summer. Second, the intensity of Beijing HUI exhibits a clear interannual warming trend with its mean growth rate (MGR) being 0.3088℃/10 a. The MGR of HUI is largest in winter, next in spring and autumn, and least in summer, and the urban temperature increase makes a major contribution to the growth of HUI intensity. Third, since the Reform and Opening, the urbanization indices have grown several ten times or even one hundred times, the intensity of HUI has increased dramatically, and its spatial scale also expanded distinctively along with the expansion of urban architectural complexes. Fourth, the interannual variation of urbanization indices is very similar with that of HUI intensity, and their linear correlation coefficients are significant at a more than 0.001 confidence level.YU Shuqiu, BIAN Lingen & LIN Xuechun State Key Laboratory on Severe Weather, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Beijing 100081, China National Climate Center, China Meteorological Administration, Beijing 100081, China 2005Science China Earth Sciences2005,48,z2:5
Analysis to significant climate change in aerosol influence domain of Beijing and its peripheral areas by EOF mode显示文摘Using the total ozone mapping spectrometer (TOMS) aerosol optical depth (AOD)data and the sunshine duration, fog days, Iow cloud cover (LCC), etc. meteorological data in 1979-2000 in North China, as well as empirical orthogonal function (EOF) mode statistical analyses method, the winter aerosol distributive character of Beijing and peripheral city agglomeration and its influence effect on regional climate are investigated in this paper, especially the relation between aerosol influence effect and distinct change regions of eigenvectors of EOF mode. It is found from analyzing the regional distribution of the long-term averaged winter TOMS AOD that there is a large-scale relatively stable high value zone of aerosol concentration in the valley of the Beijing and peripheral U-shape megarelief. A high correlation area of AOD between Beijing and its southern peripheral exists in winter, and in this significant region of aerosol interaction, there is 'in-phase' character of the interannual variations of winter AOD, fog days, and LCCs. It indicates that the variations of aerosol in Beijing and its peripheral areas have impacts on interannual changes of fog days and LCCs in this area. The EOF analyses of the meteorological data further reveal the climate change regions and long-term trends of winter sunshine duration-reducing, and LCC- and fog days-increasing in North China. The areas of significant changes of the first EOF eigenvectors (FEE) of sunshine duration, fog days, LCCs almost superpose on corresponding marked regions of interdecadal differences between the 1990s and 1980s, and all accord with the S-N zonal high value pattern and high correlation region of winter AOD in Beijing and its peripheral areas. Interannual variations of their associated time coefficients (ATC) are in phase with that of regional mean AOD, and both of them have a secular rising trend. Results by EOF mode analyses depict the regional climatic change principal character of winter sunshine duration-reducing, and LCC- and fog days-increasing in peripheral areas to the south of Beijing, and reveal the regional influence effect of aerosol, i.e. the high value zone of long-term averaged winter AOD, significant change regions of FEE of sunshine duration, fog days, and LCC all lie in peripheral city agglomeration to the south of Beijing. These distributive features above suggest that there exists a regional strengthening trend of aerosol climatic effect within influence domain in peripheral city agglomeration to the south of Beijing.SHI Xiaohui, XU Xiangde, ZHANG Shengjun & DING Guoan State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Beijing 100081, China Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Nanjing 210044, China 2005Science China Earth Sciences2005,48,z2:5
A tentative study for the prediction of the CME related geomagnetic storm intensity and its transit time显示文摘Using 80 CME-ICME events during 1997.1―2002.9, based on the eruptive source locations of CMEs and solar magnetic field observation at the photosphere, a current sheet magnetic coordinate (CMC) system is established in order to study the propagation of CME and its geoeffectiveness. In context of this coordinate system, the effect of the eruptive source location and the form of heliospheric current sheet (HCS) at the eruptive time of CME on the geomagnetic storm intensity caused by CME and the CME’s transit time at the Earth is investigated in detail. Our preliminary conclusions are: 1) The geomagnetic disturbances caused by CMEs tend to have the so-called “same side-opposite side effect”, i.e. CMEs erupt from the same side of the HCS as the earth would be more likely to arrive at the earth and the geomagnetic disturbances associated with them tend to be of larger magnitude, while CMEs erupting from the opposite side would arrive at the earth with less probability and the corresponding geomagnetic disturbance magnitudes would be relatively weaker. 2) The angular separation between the earth and the HCS affect the corresponding disturbance intensity. That is, when our earth is located near the HCS, adverse space weather events occur most probably. 3) The erupting location of the CME and its nearby form of HCS will also affect its arrival time at the earth. According to these conclusions, in this context of CMC coordinate we arrive at new prediction method for estimating the geomagnetic storm intensity (Dstmin) caused by CMEs and their transit times. The application of the empirical model for 80 CME-ICME events shows that the relative error of Dst is within 30% for 59% events with Dstmin≤?50 nT, while the averaged absolute error of transit time is lower than 10 h for all events.ZHAO Xinhua1,2 & FENG Xueshang1,3 1. 13Propagation of interplanetary shock excited ultra low frequency (ULF) waves in magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere——Multi-spacecraft “Cluster” and ground-based magnetometer observations显示文摘The ultra low frequency (ULF) wave in magnetosphere can act as an important means for solar wind energy inward transmission. This paper quantitatively analyzes the propagation process of the ULF wave triggered by the interplanetary shock propagating from inner magnetosphere equatorial plane along magnetic field lines to the top of the ionosphere and below ionosphere propagating process and establishes a relatively complete magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere propagation model which can be used to study the relationship between the amplitude of the ULF waves triggered by the interplanetary shock wave in magnetospheric space and the magnetic effect caused by the ULF waves. After a comparison with recent observations,we found that: in the event during November 7,2004 that an interplanetary shock wave interacted with the magnetosphere,Cluster satellites observed that electric field fluctuations and the band-pass filtered result of ground stations meridional component had similar characteristics.Comparing with the geomagnetic measurement near the footprints,we found that the electric field disturbance in the magnetosphere spread along the ground magnetic field lines in the form of the ULF waves and changed into geomagnetic disturbance. The result reveals that the ULF wave is in contact with the ground geomagnetic observation. The ULF waves couple with ionized components in ionosphere and spread to the ground in the form of electromagnetic waves. In this research,we believe that the magnetosphere, ionosphere and ground magnetic effects caused by interplanetary shock wave are the same physical phenomena responding in different locations.Based on the overall consideration of entire electromagnetic response to the interplanetary shock wave,we found that the correlation between CLUSTER multi-satellite observation and geomagnetic station observation is due to the ULF wave propagated in magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere system, and we quantitatively interpreted this response process.WANG ChengRui1,2,ZONG QiuGang1,3 & WANG YongFu1 1 Institute of Space Physics and Applied Technology,Peking University,Beijing 100871,China 2 Sate Key Laboratory of Space Weather,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100190,China 3 Center for Atmospheric Research,600 Suffolk Street,University of Massachusetts Lowell,MA 01854,USA 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,9:3
Prediction method for October 2003 solar storm显示文摘Aiming at two intense shock events on October 28 and 29, 2003, this paper presents a two-step method, which combines synoptic analysis of space weather ——“observing” and quantitative prediction ——“palpating”, and then uses it to test predictions. In the first step of “observing”, on the basis of observations of the solar source surface magnetic field, interplanetary scintillation (IPS) and ACE spacecraft, we find that the propagation of the shocks is asymmetric relative to the normal direction of their solar sources, and the Earth is located near the direction of the fastest speed and the greatest energy of the shocks. As the two fast ejection shock events, the fast explosion of coronal mass of the extremely high temperature, the strong magnetic field, and the high speed background solar wind are also helpful to their rapid propagation. In the second step of “palpating”, we adopt a new membership function of the fast shock events for the ISF method. The predicted results show that for the onset time of the geomagnetic disturbance, the relative errors between the observational and the predicted results are 1.8% and 6.7%; and for the magnetic disturbance magnitude, the relative errors are 4.1% and 3.1%, re- spectively. Furthermore, the comparison among the predicted results of our two-step method with those of five other prevailing methods shows that the two-step method is advantageous. The results tell us that understanding the physical features of shock propagation thoroughly is of great importance in improving the prediction precision.XIE Yanqiong1, 2, 3, WEI Fengsi1, FENG Xueshang1 & ZHONG Dingkun1, 2 1. 15Numerical study of successive CMEs during November 4―5, 1998显示文摘We present the solar-terrestrial transit process of three successive coronal mass ejections (CMEs) of November 4―5, 1998 originating from active region 8375 by using a time-dependent three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simula-tion. These CMEs interacted with each other while they were propagating in inter-planetary space and finally formed a 'complex ejecta'. A newly developed SIP-CESE MHD model was applied to solve MHD equations numerically. The quiet solar wind was started from Parker-like 1D solar wind solution and the magnetic field map was calculated from the solar photospheric magnetic field data. In our simulation, the ejections were initiated using pulse in the real active region 8375. The interplanetary disturbance parameters, such as speed, direction and angular size of the expanding CME, were determined from the SOHO/LASCO data with the cone-model. We discussed the three-dimensional aspects of the propagation, in-teraction and merging of the three ejections. The simulated interplanetary shocks were compared with the nearby-Earth measurement. The results showed that our simulation could reproduce and explain some of the general features observed by satellite for the 'complex ejecta'.ZHOU YuFen & FENG XueShang SIGMA Weather Group, State Key Laboratory for Space Weather, Center for Space Science and Applied Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China 2008Science China(Technological Sciences)2008,51,10:3
Characteristics of climate change in the “significant impact zone” affected by aerosols over eastern China in warm seasons显示文摘Through analysis of the distribution pattern and changing characteristics of atmospheric aerosols over the East Asia region during warm seasons in recent 20 a and beyond as well as their possible interac- tive relationship with a variety of meteorological elements, it is found that the high-value zone of aerosol optical depth derived from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS), its significant negative correlation zones in terms of sunshine duration (SD) and surface air temperature (SAT) and its significant positive correlation zones with low-level cloud amount (LCC) are co-located in the South China region during warm periods. Based on this finding, the region is referred to as a 'significant impact zone' (SI zone) affected by aerosols. Then, a comparative analysis is made on variation differ- ences of observed SAT, SD and LCC, etc. in different regions. It is also found that the LCC is increased and the SD is decreased within the 'SI zone' over eastern China during the warm season. These characteristics are more evident than those beyond the zone, while the warming trend within the zone is evidently weaker than that outside it. Studies show that since recent 20 a, under the influence of aerosols, the LCC tend to increase substantially with a clear decrease of SD and an unnoticeable warming trend within the 'SI zone'. Comparing with the climate change beyond the zone, the difference is significant. Therefore, the effects of atmospheric aerosols on climate is possibly one of the contri- butions to the difference of climate change existed between the southern and northern parts of the Eastern China during a warm season.SHI XiaoHui1, XU XiangDe1, XIE LiAn2 1 State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Beijing 100081, China 2 Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, North Carolina State University, Raleigh NC27695-8208, USA 2008Science China Earth Sciences2008,51,5:2
Dried-leaf Artemisia annua: A practical malaria therapeutic for developing countries?显示文摘Artemisinin from the plant Artemisia annua(A. annua) L., and used as artemisinin combination therapy(ACT), is the current best therapeutic for treating malaria, a disease that hits children and adults especially in developing countries. Traditionally, A. annua was used by the Chinese as a tea to treat 'fever'. More recently, investigators have shown that tea infusions and oral consumption of the dried leaves of the plant have prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy. The presence of a complex matrix of chemicals within the leaves seems to enhance both the bioavailability and efficacy of artemisinin. Although about 1000-fold less potent than artemisinin in their antiplasmodial activity, these plant chemicals are mainly small molecules that include other artemisinic compounds, terpenes(mainly mono and sesqui), flavonoids, and polyphenolic acids. In addition, polysaccharide constituents of A. annua may enhance bioavailability of artemisinin. Rodent pharmacokinetics showed longer T? and T max and greater C max and AUC in Plasmodium chabaudi-infected mice treated with A. annua dried leaves than in healthy mice. Pharmacokinetics of deoxyartemisinin, a liver metabolite of artemisinin, was more inhibited in infected than in healthy mice. In healthy mice, artemisinin serum levels were > 40-fold greater in dried leaf fed mice than those fed with pure artemisinin. Human trial data showed that when delivered as dried leaves, 40-fold less artemisinin was required to obtain a therapeutic response compared to pure artemisinin. ACTs are still unaffordable for many malaria patients, and cost estimates for A. annua dried leaf tablet production are orders of magnitude less than for ACT, despite improvements in the production capacity. Considering that for > 2000 years this plant was used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of fever with no apparent appearance of artemisinin drug resistance, the evidence argues for inclusion of affordable A. annua dried leaf tablets into the arsenal of drugs to combat malaria and other artemisinin-susceptible diseases.Pamela J Weathers Melissa Towler Ahmed Hassanali Pierre Lutgen Patrick Ogwang Engeu 2014World Journal of Pharmacology2014,3,4:2
The variation in the magnetic fluctuation anisotropy across the front boundaries of magnetic clouds and its geomagnetic response显示文摘A statistical study of magnetic fluctuations near the front boundaries of magnetic clouds is approached with the method of Minimum Variance Analysis, based on the data of ImpS and Wind spacecraft. New discoveries are that (1) fluctuation anisotropy tends to increase across the front boundaries of magnetic clouds; (2) there is a good correlation between the fluctuation anisotropy and the geomagnetic activity indices; and (3) in some cases, although there is southward field component immediately after the front boundary, Kp index descends (or Dst index ascends) with a corresponding decrease of the fluctuation anisotropy; in other cases with no distinct southward field component, Kp index ascends (or Dst index descends) with a corresponding increase of the fluctuation anisotropy. Thus we suggest that the fluctuation anisotropy might be a useful indicator in diagnosing the magnetic activities of magnetic clouds.LIU Rui & WEI FengsiDepartment of Geophysics, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China Lab for Space Weather, Center for Space Science and Applied Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100080, China 2002Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,10:2

Solar release time of solar energetic particles and associated acceleration source in corona显示文摘Solar energetic particles (SEPs) are accelerated in corona at an early phase of solar energetic particle events (SEPE). The acceleration mechanism of SEPs in corona can only be inferred from an analysis of multi-band observational data, as the observation of SEPs is usually made around 1AU. In this context, people have investigated spectrums, charge state, solar release time (SRT), and multi-band data of SEPEs, in an attempt to judge the acceleration mechanism of SEPs. The SRT computation of SEPs is an important and commonly used approach to study the acceleration mechanism of SEPs in corona. This paper reviews some important findings concerning the SRT computation of SEPs, and analyzes different merits of each approach for such calculation, based on a range of SEPE case studies. This paper also analyzes and discusses both possible and actual acceleration mechanisms of a number of SEPEs, by calculating the SRT of the SEPEs. Finally, the paper summarizes the possible problems in studying an acceleration mechanism of SEPEs inferred from the SRT of SEP.LE GuiMing1,2,3,4, TANG YuHua1 & HAN YanBen4 1 Department of Astronomy, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210093, China 2 Key Laboratory of Radiometric Calibration and Validation for Environmental Satellites, China Meteorological Administration, Beijing 100081, China 3 National Center for Space Weather, China Meteorological Administration, Beijing 100081, China 4 National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100012, China 2008Chinese Science Bulletin2008,53,2:2
