| 7 | Towards uniformly oriented diatom frustule monolayers:Experimental and theoretical analyses显示文摘Diatoms are unicellular,photosynthetic algae that are ubiquitous in aquatic environments.Their unique,three-dimensional(3D)structured silica exoskeletons,also known as frustules,have drawn attention from a variety of research fields due to their extraordinary mechanical properties,enormous surface area,and unique optical properties.Despite their promising use in a range of applications,without methods to uniformly control the frustules’alignment/orientation,their full potential in technology development cannot be realized.In this paper,we realized and subsequently modeled a simple bubbling method for achieving large-area,uniformly oriented Coscinodiscus species diatom frustules.With the aid of bubble-induced agitations,close-packed frustule monolayers were achieved on the water–air interface with up to nearly 90%of frustules achieving uniform orientation.The interactions between bubble-induced agitations were modeled and analyzed,demonstrating frustule submersion and an adjustment of the orientation during the subsequent rise towards the water’s surface to be fundamental to the experimentally observed uniformity.The method described in this study holds great potential for frustules’engineering applications in a variety of technologies,from sensors to energy-harvesting devices. | Aobo Li Wenqiang Zhang Reza Ghaffarivardavagh Xiaoning Wang Stephan W.Anderson Xin Zhang | 2016 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2016,2,1: | 1 |
| 8 | Salinity and cultivar effects on alfalfa forage yield and nutritive value in a Mediterranean climate显示文摘Background:Soil and water salinity are increasing problems worldwide,causing significantly reduced crop yields.Alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.)is often listed as salt-sensitive,but field testing of improved cultivars is limited.Forage systems and improved high-quality alfalfa varieties are needed to enable crop production under high salinity(HS)conditions.Methods:The objective of this study was to measure the yield and quality response of alfalfa to high saline conditions in the field and to document the relative saline tolerance of its varieties.HS irrigation water(electrical conductivity of water,or ECw 8.0–11.0 dS m−1)was applied to 33 nondormant alfalfa cultivars and were compared with low salinity(LS)treatments(ECw 0.5–1.2 dS m−1)over 4 years in a Mediterranean environment on a clay loam soil utilizing a split-plot design.Crops were harvested seven to eight times per year,and the forage quality was measured on selected harvests utilizing near-infrared spectroscopy.Results:The average yield loss due to HS treatment was 23.9%compared with LS treatment,but yields averaged 23.4 Mg ha−1 under HS over the 3 full years of production.This level of production is considered to be economically viable in this region.Differences in salinity tolerance between lines were identified in the field;individual cultivars lost 5%–35%of their LS yield when grown under HS conditions.Forage quality was significantly improved under HS versus LS conditions,but improvements were negatively correlated with biomass yield(R2>0.81),similar to responses observed in drought-stressed alfalfa.Conclusions:These yield results confirm greenhouse studies,indicating that alfalfa is highly salt tolerant once established in the field,with potential for further improvement with tolerant cultivars.Salinity tolerance should be chosen based on total biomass yield as well as on the salinity tolerance index(HS yield relative to LS yield).Agronomic practices to mitigate salinity and sodicity are critical,along with improved cultivars. | Aaron W.Anderson Umair Gull Sharon E.Benes Simarjeet Singh Robert B.Hutmacher Edward Charles Brummer Daniel H.Putnam | 2023 | Grassland Research2023,2,3: | 0 |
| 9 | Preference status does not indicate intrinsic quality differences in Drosophila pseudoobscura显示文摘The good genes hypothesis states that choosers prefer individuals of high intrinsic quality to individuals of lower intrinsic quality.Variation in longevity is thought to reflect,in part,intrinsic quality differences of individuals in addition to the costs of mating and reproduction.Here we report longevity variation of Drosophila pseudoobscura,a species in which previous experiments have demonstrated that individual mate preferences(pre-touching mate assessments)of females and males are associated with enhanced numbers of eclosed(adult)offspring and higher egg-to-adult survival(offspring viability).Using mate assessment arenas and protocols similar to those in a previous experiment that demonstrated fitness benefits to breeders and their offspring of mating with individuals they preferred,we tested the following predictions:(i)preferred discriminatees live longer than non-preferred discriminatees;(ii)males live longer than females;and(iii)virgins live longer than mated individuals.The experiment yielded 938 individuals for longevity analysis.Sex and mating status affected longevity:males lived longer than females,virgin females lived longer than mated females,but there were no differences in longevity for mated and virgin males.Non-preferred discriminatees of both sexes survived as long as preferred discriminatees,a result inconsistent with the prediction of the good genes hypothesis for mate preferences.To our knowledge,this is the first demonstration of the cost of reproduction for females in D.pseudoobscura and of longevity variation of preferred and non-preferred discriminatees. | Yong-Kyu KIM Mary Beth WEBER Wyatt W.ANDERSON Patricia Adair GOWATY | 2010 | Integrative Zoology2010,5,3: | 0 |
