We present new geologic and structural maps, geochemical plots, geo- and thermo-chronology, and geophysical data from seven silicic, mafic to ultramafic complexes separated by major shear systems across the southern Makhonjwa Mountains. All reveal signs of modern oceanic back-arc crust and subductionrelated processes. We compare the rates of processes determined from this data and balance these against plate tectonic and plume related models. Robust rates of both horizontal and vertical tectonic processes derived from the Makhonjwa Mountain complexes are similar, well within an order of magnitude, to those encountered across modern oceanic and orogenic terrains flanking Western Pacific-like subduction zones. We conclude that plate tectonics and linked plate-boundary processes were well established by 3.2-3.6 Ga. Our findings show the Lambert and Mellor Glaciers upstream of the ANARE Lambert Glacier Basin (LGB) traverse may have positive imbalances of 3.9±2.1 Gt a-1 and 2.1±2.4 Gt a-1, respectively, while the Fisher Glacier is approximately in balance. The upstream region as a whole has a positive imbalance of 5.9±4.9 Gt a-1. The three same glaciers downstream of the ANARE LGB traverse line are in negative imbalance, where the whole downstream region has a negative imbalance of -8.5±5.8 Gt a-1. Overall the mass budgets of the Lambert, Mellor, and Fisher Glaciers are close to bal-ance, and the collective three-glacier system is also nearly in balance with a mass budget of -2.6±6.5 Gt a-1. The significant positive imbalances for the interior basin upstream of the ice-movement stations established in the early 1970s (GL line) reported previously are possibly due to an overestimate of the total accumulation and an underestimate of the ice flux through the GL line. The mean melting rate is -23.0±3.5 m ice a-1 near the southern grounding line, which decreases rapidly downstream, and transitions to refreezing at around 300 km from the southern extremity of the Amery Ice Shelf. Freezing rates along the flowbands are around 0.5±0.1 to 1.5±0.2 m ice a-1. The per-centage of ice lost from the interior by basal melting beneath the flowbands is about 80%±5%. The total basal melting and refreezing beneath the three flowbands is 50.3±7.5 Gt ice a-1 and 7.0±1.1 Gt ice a-1, respectively. This included an Yb^3+ series where the Yb^3+ concentration was varied between 11%—21% for a constant Er^3+ concentration of 3%, and an Er^3+ series, where the Er^3+ concentration was varied between 1%-4% for a constant Yb^3+ concentration of 14%. The results were fitted with a coupled rate equation model utilizing the UCL data and decay kinetics of the green and red Er34 emission and the Yb34 luminescence at 980 nm. An increasing Yb34 concentration favors a pronounced triphotonic population of 4F9/2 at high P by an enhanced back energy transfer (BET) from the 4G11/2 level. Simultaneously, the Yb^3+-controlled UCNPs absorption cross section overcompensates for the reduction in Фuc with increasing Yb^3+ concentration at high P, resulting in an increase in Sue. Additionally, our results show that an increase in Yb34 and a decrease in Er^3+ concentration enhance the color tuning range by P. | 19 | In vitro Response of Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells to Titanium Coated Peek Films and Their Suitability for Magnetic Resonance Imaging显示文摘Medical imaging is an important tool for the post-operative checkup of an accurate position of an implant as well as for monitoring the integration in the adjacent tissue that may influence the success of a medical device.Unfortunately,the possibility to use imaging methods is associated with the implant material and all the established metallic materials for surgery do not show a proper 'imaging compatibility'.The present study is a combined investigation of the in vitro response to human mesenchymal stromal cells(hMSC) and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) compatibility of the potential material combination polyetheretherketone/titanium(PEEK/Ti) for medical devices.Because of the advantageous imaging properties and the mechanical and chemical stability,PEEK becomes more and more an alternative to common metallic implant materials like titanium or cobalt-chrome.However,PEEK is a bioinert material having a limited ability for direct bone incorporation.Due to its excellent biocompatibility,Ti was chosen as coating material to enhance the cellular response.The result is a combination with advantageous properties:the magnetic susceptibility and elastic modulus close to bone,corrosion resistance and mechanical flexibility of PEEK and the excellent biocompatibility of titanium.The appearance of metal-related artifact was discussed in electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility.Therefore,two titanium coatings have been investigated:a complete coating and a structured surface avoiding surface conductivity.To determine the in vitro biocompatibility,the cell responses were assessed in terms of the overall morphology of the hMSC and their cell area distribution,proliferation,osteogenic differentiation and mineral deposition.The cellular stress was evaluated by the prostaglandin E_2 level.The bonded materials both produced no disturbing artifacts in magnetic resonance imaging.Compared to the pure PEEK material,the titanium coated specimens showed an enhanced biocompatibility,which is indicated by a higher cell number,larger activity of the enzyme tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase and therefore a greater amount of deposited calcium and phosphate.The results on bare PEEK are accompanied with a higher cellular stress level,which is indicated by prostaglandin E_2. | Cindy Elschner Carolin Noack Carolin PreilBler Andreas Krause Ulrich Scheler Ute Hempel | 2015 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2015,31,5: | 3 |
| 20 | Zinc in plants:Integrating homeostasis and biofortification显示文摘Zinc plays many essential roles in life.As a strong Lewis acid that lacks redox activity under environ-mental and cellular conditions,the Zn2+cation is central in determining protein structure and catalytic function of nearly 10%of most eukaryotic proteomes.While specific functions of zinc have been elucidated at a molecular level in a number of plant proteins,wider issues abound with respect to the acquisition and distribution of zinc by plants.An important challenge is to understand how plants balance between Zn supply in soil and their own nutritional requirement for zinc,particularly where edaphic factors lead to a lack of bioavailable zinc or,conversely,an excess of zinc that bears a major risk of phyto-toxicity.Plants are the ultimate source of zinc in the human diet,and human Zn deficiency accounts for over 400000 deaths annually.Here,we review the current understanding of zinc homeostasis in plants from the molecular and physiological perspectives.We provide an overview of approaches pursued so far in Zn biofortification of crops.Finally,we outline a'push-pull'model of zinc nutrition in plants as a simplifying concept.In summary,this review discusses avenues that can potentially deliver wider bene-fits for both plant and human Zn nutrition. | Camilla Stanton Dale Sanders Ute Krämer Dorina Podar | 2022 | Molecular Plant2022,15,1: | 3 |
