1Epidemiology of diabetic retinopathy,diabetic macular edema and related vision loss显示文摘Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is a leading cause of vision-loss globally.Of an estimated 285 million people with diabetes mellitus worldwide,approximately one third have signs of DR and of these,a further one third of DR is vision-threatening DR,including diabetic macular edema(DME).The identification of established modifiable risk factors for DR such as hyperglycemia and hypertension has provided the basis for risk factor control in preventing onset and progression of DR.Additional research investigating novel risk factors has improved our understanding of multiple biological pathways involved in the pathogenesis of DR and DME,especially those involved in inflammation and oxidative stress.Variations in DR prevalence between populations have also sparked interest in genetic studies to identify loci associated with disease susceptibility.In this review,major trends in the prevalence,incidence,progression and regression of DR and DME are explored,and gaps in literature identified.Established and novel risk factors are also extensively reviewed with a focus on landmark studies and updates from the recent literature.Ryan Lee Tien YWong Charumathi Sabanayagam 2015Eye and Vision2015,2,1:75

3Is nasopharyngeal cancer really a “Cantonese cancer”?显示文摘Nasopharyngeal cancer(NPC) is endemic in Southern China,with Guandong province and Hong Kong reporting some of the highest incidences in the world.The journal Science has called it a 'Cantonese cancer'.We propose that in fact NPC is a cancer that originated in the Bai-Yue('proto-Tai-Kadai' or 'proto-Austronesian' or 'proto-Zhuang') peoples and was transmitted to the Han Chinese in southern China through intermarriage.However,the work by John Ho raised the profile of NPC,and because of the high incidence of NPC in Hong Kong and Guangzhou,NPC became known as a Cantonese cancer.We searched historical articles,articles cited in PubMed,Google,monographs,books and Internet articles relating to genetics of the peoples with high populations of NPC.The migration history of these various peoples was extensively researched,and where possible,their genetic fingerprint identified to corroborate with historical accounts.Genetic and anthropological evidence suggest there are a lot of similarities between the Bai-Yue and the aboriginal peoples of Borneo and Northeast India;between Inuit of Greenland,Austronesian Mayalo-Polynesians of Southeast Asia and Polynesians of Oceania,suggesting some common ancestry.Genetic studies also suggest the present Cantonese,Minnans and Hakkas are probably an admixture of northern Han and southern Bai-Yue.All these populations have a high incidence of NPC.Very early contact between southern Chinese and peoples of East Africa and Arabia can also account for the intermediate incidence of NPC in these regions.Joseph Tien Seng Wee Tam Cam Ha Susan Li Er Loong Chao-Nan Qian 2010Chinese Journal of Cancer2010,29,5:37

5A hybrid machine learning ensemble approach based on a Radial Basis Function neural network and Rotation Forest for landslide susceptibility modeling:A case study in the Himalayan area, India显示文摘In this paper, a hybrid machine learning ensemble approach namely the Rotation Forest based Radial Basis Function(RFRBF) neural network is proposed for spatial prediction of landslides in part of the Himalayan area(India). The proposed approach is an integration of the Radial Basis Function(RBF) neural network classifier and Rotation Forest ensemble, which are state-of-the art machine learning algorithms for classification problems. For this purpose, a spatial database of the study area was established that consists of 930 landslide locations and fifteen influencing parameters(slope angle, road density, curvature, land use, distance to road, plan curvature, lineament density, distance to lineaments, rainfall,distance to river, profile curvature, elevation, slope aspect, river density, and soil type). Using the database, training and validation datasets were generated for constructing and validating the model. Performance of the model was assessed using the Receiver Operating Characteristic(ROC) curve, area under the ROC curve(AUC), statistical analysis methods, and the Chi square test. In addition, Logistic Regression(LR), Multi-layer Perceptron Neural Networks(MLP Neural Nets), Na(?)ve Bayes(NB), and the hybrid model of Rotation Forest and Decision Trees(RFDT) were selected for comparison. 6High-speed colour-converting photodetector with all-inorganic CsPbBr_(3) perovskite nanocrystals for ultraviolet light communication显示文摘Optical wireless communication(OWC)using the ultra-broad spectrum of the visible-to-ultraviolet(UV)wavelength region remains a vital field of research for mitigating the saturated bandwidth of radio-frequency(RF)communication.However,the lack of an efficient UV photodetection methodology hinders the development of UV-based communication.The key technological impediment is related to the low UV-photon absorption in existing silicon photodetectors,which offer low-cost and mature platforms.To address this technology gap,we report a hybrid Sibased photodetection scheme by incorporating CsPbBr_(3) perovskite nanocrystals(NCs)with a high photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY)and a fast photoluminescence(PL)decay time as a UV-to-visible colourconverting layer for high-speed solar-blind UV communication.The facile formation of drop-cast CsPbBr_(3) perovskite NCs leads to a high PLQY of up to ~73% and strong absorption in the UV region.With the addition of the NC layer,a nearly threefold improvement in the responsivity and an increase of ~25% in the external quantum efficiency(EQE)of the solar-blind region compared to a commercial silicon-based photodetector were observed.Moreover,timeresolved photoluminescence measurements demonstrated a decay time of 4.5 ns under a 372-nm UV excitation source,thus elucidating the potential of this layer as a fast colour-converting layer.A high data rate of up to 34 Mbps in solar-blind communication was achieved using the hybrid CsPbBr_(3)-silicon photodetection scheme in conjunction with a 278-nm UVC light-emitting diode(LED).These findings demonstrate the feasibility of an integrated high-speed photoreceiver design of a composition-tuneable perovskite-based phosphor and a low-cost silicon-based photodetector for UV communication.Chun Hong Kang Ibrahim Dursun Guangyu Liu Lutfan Sinatra Xiaobin Sun Meiwei Kong Jun Pan Partha Maity Ee-Ning Ooi Tien Khee Ng Omar F.Mohammed Osman M.Bakr Boon S.Ooi 2019Light(Science & Applications)2019,8,1:14
7Hepatitis B virus X protein suppresses virus-triggered IRF3 activation and IFN-β induction by disrupting the VISA-associated complex显示文摘Viral RNAs produced during viral infection are recognized by the cytoplasmic RNA helicases retinoic acid-inducible gene-I(RIG-I)and melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5(MDA5).A central adapter protein downstream of RIG-I and MDA5 is the mitochondrial membrane protein virus-induced signaling adaptor(VISA),which mediates the induction of type I interferons(IFNs)through the activation of transcription factors such as nuclear factor-kappaB(NF-kB)and IFN-regulatory factor-3(IRF3).Here we found that hepatitis B virus(HBV)-encoded X protein(HBx)acts as an inhibitor of virus-triggered IRF3 activation and IFN-b induction.Reporter and plaque assays indicate that HBx inhibits signaling by components upstream but not downstream of VISA.Immunoprecipitation experiments indicate that HBx interacts with VISA and disrupts the association of VISA with its upstream and downstream components.These findings suggest that HBx acts as a suppressor of virus-triggered induction of type I IFNs,which explains the observation that HBV causes transient and chronic infection in hepatocytes but fails to activate the pattern recognition receptor-mediated IFN induction pathways.Xianmiao Wang Ying Li Aiping Mao Chao Li Yongkui Li Po Tien 2010Cellular & Molecular Immunology2010,7,5:13

10韧带重建肌腱团填塞术治疗第一腕掌关节骨关节炎的疗效分析显示文摘目的:探讨韧带重建肌腱团填塞术(ligament reconstruction tendon interposition, LRTI)治疗第一腕掌关节骨关节炎的临床疗效。方法回顾性分析2008年1月至2011年1月,应用LRTI治疗19例(21拇指)第一腕掌关节骨关节炎患者资料,男1例(1拇指),女18例(20拇指);年龄52~75岁,平均60岁;左侧8拇指,右侧13拇指。术前影像学Eaton-Glickel分期:Ⅱ期1拇指,Ⅲ期14拇指,Ⅳ期6拇指。根据术后第一掌骨向近端移位的程度,分为轻度(0~33%)、中度(34%~67%)、重度(68%~100%)三组,分别测量各组握力、指尖捏力、活动度及疼痛视觉模拟评分(visual analogue scale, VAS),并对上述结果进行统计学分析。结果19例患者均获得随访,随访时间9~28个月,平均13.9个月。影像学结果显示,术后第一掌骨向近端移位,关节成形高度由术前的(12.4±2.7)mm降至术后(5.6±1.9)mm,平均降幅达54.8%;握力由术前的(18.6±10.1)kg增至术后的(20.5±11.9)kg;指尖捏力由术前的(4.4±2.1)kg增至术后(4.5±1.9)kg,但术前的握力和指尖捏力与术后比较无差异。关节活动度改善,拇指桡侧外展由术前的55.7°±8.2°增至术后的60.6°±7.2°,掌侧外展由术前的56.7°±8.5°增至术后的63.5°±8.2°,术前与术后比较差异有统计学意义。VAS评分从术前(6.6±1.4)分降至(0.5±0.7)分。轻、中、重度移位组间指尖捏力、握力、活动度和VAS评分无差异。结论 LRTI能消除疼痛及改善拇指的活动度,但并不能有效阻止第一掌骨向近端移位,其术后平均移位幅度超过50%,但这种移位对术后临床疗效并无显著影响。杨勇 Tien Huey-y 陈山林 田文 李忠哲 侯春梅 田光磊 2014中华骨科杂志2014,34,10:12

12Behavior of noncircular tunnels excavated in stratified rock masses-Case of underground coal mines显示文摘The amount of tunnels excavated along stratified/sedimentary rock masses in Quangninh coal mine area,Vietnam, is gradually increasing. Rock mass in Quangninh is characterized by beddings between rock layers. The behavior of stratified rock masses surrounding the tunnels depends on both the intact rock and the beddings between rock layers. The main characteristics of stratified rock masses that need to be considered are their heterogeneity and anisotropy. Depending on the dip angle of rock layers, movements and failure zones developed surrounding the tunnels can be asymmetrical over the vertical axis of tunnel. This asymmetry causes adverse behaviors of the tunnel structures. The objective of this study is to highlight convergences and yielded zones developed in rock masses surrounding noncircular tunnels in Quangninh coal mine area using a finite element method. The presence of bedding joints is explicitly simulated. The numerical results indicated that with the increase in dip angle of bedding joints, the stress asymmetry over the tunnel vertical axis increases. It gradually leads to an asymmetry of the failure zone surrounding the tunnel. An increase of rock mass quality means a decrease of rock mass sensitivity to the discontinuities. 13Genetic variants of interferon regulatory factor 5 associated with chronic hepatitis B infection显示文摘AIM To investigate possible effects of IRF5 polymorphisms in the 3' UTR region of the IFR5 locus on susceptibilityto hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection and progression of liver diseases among clinically classified Vietnamese patients.METHODS Four IFR5 SNPs(rs13242262 A/T, rs77416878 C/T, rs10488630 A/G, and rs2280714 T/C) were genotyped in clinically classified HBV patients [chronic hepatitis B(CHB). n = 99; liver cirrhosis(LC), n = 131; hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), n = 149] and in 242 healthy controls by direct sequencing and Taq Man realtime PCR assays. RESULTS Comparing patients and controls, no significant association was observed for the four IFR5 variants. However, the alleles rs13242262 T and rs10488630 G contributed to an increased risk of liver cirrhosis(LC vs CHB: OR = 1.5, 95%CI: 1.1-2.3, adjusted P = 0.04; LC vs CHB: OR = 1.7, 95%CI: 1.1-2.6, adjusted P = 0.019). Haplotype IRF5*TCGT constructed from 4 SNPs was observed frequently in LC compared to CHB patients(OR = 2.1, 95%CI: 1.2-3.3, adjusted P = 0.008). Haplotype IRF5*TCAT occurred rather among CHB patients than in the other HBV patient groups(LC vs CHB: OR = 0.4, 95%CI: 0.2-0.8, adjusted P = 0.03; HCC vs CHB: OR = 0.3, 95%CI: 0.15-0.7, adjusted P = 0.003). The IRF5*TCAT haplotype was also associated with increased levels of ALT, AST and bilirubin. 16Long-term hepatic consequences of chemotherapy-related HBV reactivation in lymphoma patients显示文摘AIM: To investigate the long-term consequences of chemotherapy-related HBV reactivation in patients with lymphoma.METHODS: This study was based on the database of published prospective study evaluating HBV reactivation in HBV lymphoma patients during chemotherapy.Deteriorated liver reserve (DLR) was defined as development of either one of the following conditions during follow-up: (1) newly onset parenchyma liver disease, splenomegaly or ascites without evidence of lymphoma involvement; (2) decrease of the ratio (albumin/globulin ratio) to less than 0.8 or increase of the ratio of INR of prothrombin time to larger than 1.2 without evidence of malnutrition or infection. Liver cirrhosis was diagnosed by imaging studies.RESULTS: A total of 49 patients were included. The median follow-up was 6.2 years (range, 3.9-8.1 years).There were 31 patients with and 18 patients without HBV reactivation. Although there was no difference of overall survival (OS) and chemotherapy response rate between the two groups, DLR developed more frequently in patients with HBV reactivation (48.4% vs 16.7%; P= 0.0342). Among the HBV reactivators, HBV genotype C was associated with a higher risk of developing DLR (P = 0.0768) and liver cirrhosis (P = 0.003). Four of five patients with sustained high titer of HBV DNA and two of three patients with multiple HBV reactivation developed DLR. Further, patients with a sustained high titer of HBV DNA had the shortest OS among the HBV reactivators (P= 0.0000). 17不同薏苡品种光合特性及其与氮素利用效率的关系显示文摘为明确薏苡品种的光合特性及与氮素利用效率间的关系。2015年早季和晚季,分别以从大田试验中筛选出来的氮素利用效率较高和较低品种各2个为材料进行盆栽试验,在分蘖期、抽穗期和成熟期测定功能叶片光合速率及叶绿素荧光参数,抽穗期测定顶部4片功能叶的光合速率,成熟期测定氮素积累量和氮素利用效率。结果表明,氮高效品种西林1号(XL)与黔饮1号(QL)早季和晚季成熟期单株氮素吸收量平均分别比氮低效品种隆林1号(LL)与品种10号(CU)高125.5%和96.0%,其氮素利用效率平均比品种LL与CU分别高出17.7%和18.0%,品种间差异显著。氮高效品种在分蘖期、抽穗期和成熟期功能叶片的光合速率和叶绿素含量均明显高于氮低效品种。同时,氮高效品种在分蘖期后的光合速率、叶绿素含量衰减速率比氮低效品种小。不同品种在分蘖期、抽穗期和成熟期功能叶片的叶绿素荧光参数及抽穗期顶部4片功能叶光合速率也存在一定的差异,但品种间的变化规律不明显。综上所述,氮高效薏苡品种各生育期功能叶片的光合速率和叶绿素含量较高,其中后期光合速率及叶绿素含量衰减较慢。薏苡品种氮素利用效率与功能叶片的叶绿素荧光参数及顶部4片功能叶光合速率的变化没有显著的相关关系。Nghiem Tien Chung 江立庚 孔飞扬 Bui Ngoc Anh 2018中国农业大学学报2018,23,11:8
18Melatonin for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome显示文摘Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is a common disorder characterized by recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort,in combination with disturbed bowel habits in the absence of identifiable organic cause.Melatonin(Nacetyl-5-methoxytryptamine)is a hormone produced by the pineal gland and also large number by enterochromaffin cells of the digestive mucosa.Melatonin plays an important part in gastrointestinal physiology which includes regulation of gastrointestinal motility,local anti-inflammatory reaction as well as moderation of visceral sensation.Melatonin is commonly given orally.It is categorized by the United States Food and Drug Administration as a dietary supplement.Melatonin treatment has an extremely wide margin of safety though it may cause minor adverse effects,such as headache,rash and nightmares.Melatonin was touted as a potential effective candidate for IBS treatment.Putative role of melatonin in IBS treatment include analgesic effects,regulator of gastrointestinal motility and sensation to sleep promoter.Placebo-controlled studies in melatonin suffered from heterogeneity in methodology.Most studies utilized 3 mg at bedtime as the standard dose of trial.However,all studies had consistently showed improvement in abdominal pain,some showed improvement in quality of life of IBS patients.Melatonin is a relatively safe drug that possesses potential in treating IBS.Future studies should focus on melatonin effect on gut mobility as well as its central nervous system effect to elucidate its role in IBS patients.Kewin Tien Ho Siah Reuben Kong Min Wong Khek Yu Ho 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,10:8
19Expression of β-catenin in hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: The β-catenin has been recognized as a critical member of the Wnt signaling pathway and plays an important role in the generation/differentiation of many tissues. Inappropriate activation of this pathway has been implicated in carcinogenesis. The mechanism underlying the development as well as its prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has remained unclear. The purpose of this study is to analyze the expression of β-catenin in HCC in relation to histological grades and viral hepatitis backgrounds.METHODS: Thirty-two sections were selected at random from autopsy and surgical cases of HCC. Immuohistologically,the location and positivity of β-catenin expression in HCC was examined.RESULTS: Normal hepatocytes did not express β-catenin.In 78% of HCC β-catenin was expressed at the membrane of the cells, with or without cytoplasmic and/or nuclear expression. The tumor cells with well- and moderatelydifferentiated grades expressed frequently at the membrane and cytoplasm compared with poorly-differentiated type.Nuclear expression of β-catenin was prone to occur in the tumor cells of poorly-differentiated grade. There were 15% of hepatitis C virus (HCV) backgrounds with nuclear expression. In contrast, there was 38% with nuclear expression in hepatitis B virus (HBV) backgrounds. 20Effect of auxiliary ventilations on diesel particulate matter dispersion inside a dead-end entry显示文摘Diesel particulate matter(DPM) is considered carcinogenic after prolonged exposure. This paper used computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method to study the effect of four auxiliary ventilation systems on DPM distribution in a dead-end entry with loading operation. The auxiliary ventilation systems considered include: blower fan and tubing; exhaust fan and tubing, jet fan, and push–pull system. A species transport model with buoyancy effect was used to examine the DPM dispersion pattern with unsteady state analysis. During the 200 s of the loading operation, high DPM levels were identified in the face and dead-end entry regions. This study can be used for mining engineer as guidance to design and setup of local ventilation.
