| 5 | Pattern of acute poisoning in Jimma University Specialized Hospital,South West Ethiopia显示文摘BACKGROUND:Poisoning is a common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.People can be exposed to poisons either intentionally or accidentally.Designing appropriate treatment or prevention approaches depends on understanding of the nature and pattern of poisoning in a specific place.Information on the patterns of acute poisoning in Ethiopian hospitals is limited.This study was,therefore,conducted to evaluate the patterns of acute poisoning in Jimma University Specialized Hospital(JUSH),South West Ethiopia.METHODS:A record based retrospective analysis of acute poisoning cases presented to JUSH from January 1,2012 to December 31,2013 was conducted.The collected data was analyzed using SPSS version 16.RESULTS:Of the 103 patients,49(47.6%) were male and 54(52.4%) were female.The highest prevalence of poisoning was observed in persons aged 12-20 years(70,67.96%).Majority of the cases were intentional poisoning(52,50.5%),and 28(27.2%) of the cases were accidental.The common causes of poisoning were house hold cleansing agents(43,41.7%),organophosphates(28,27.2%) and drugs(13,12.6%).Diarrhea and vomiting(49.5%),altered consciousness(16.5%) and epigastric pain(13.6%) were the common presenting symptoms.CONCLUSION:Majority of the victims of the acute poisoning in this study were aged 12-20 years.The most common mode of poisoning was intentional poisoning resulting from temporary quarrel.The common poisons used by the victims were found to be household cleansing agents. | Eyosias Teklemariam Shibiru Tesema Awol Jemal | 2016 | World Journal of Emergency Medicine2016,7,4: | 0 |
| 6 | Trends and spatial distributions of HIV prevalence in Ethiopia显示文摘Background:Globally,by the end of 2018,37.9 million people were living with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).Sub-Saharan Africa carries the highest burden with an estimated 71%of the global total.In Ethiopia,an estimated 715404 people were living with HIV in 2015 and this increased to 722248 in 2017.This study was to explore the trends and spatial distributions of HIV cases in Ethiopia.Methods:In this study,we explored the spatial and temporal distribution of persons living with HIV in Ethiopia using data from 2005,2011,and 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Surveys(EDHS).Geographic information system(Getis-Ord Gi*statistics)and spatial scan statistics(SaTScan)were used for exploratory and confirmatory spatial analyses respectively.Results:The overall prevalence of HIV in Ethiopia unveiled inconsistent trends,with the majority of areas showing decreasing trends.Hot spot clusters exhibited in all the three surveys,which include areas where Amhara,Afar and Tigray regions share neighbourhoods.In 2005 regionally,Gambella,Addis Ababa,and Harari had the highest prevalence at 6.0,47 and 3.5%,respectively.While in the 2016 survey the highest prevalence(4.8%)was observed in Gambella regional state followed by Addis Ababa(3.4%).Conclusions:The distribution of HIV infection in Ethiopia is not random in all the three EDHS surveys.High clusters of HIV cases were consistently observed in Addis Ababa and neighbouring areas of the Afar Tigray and Amhara regional states and central Oromia.This analysis revealed that there are still areas which need studying with respect to the epidemic of HIV.In this regard Addis Ababa,certain areas of Amhara regional state,large areas of Afar region and central Oromia require special attention. | Getiye Dejenu Kibret Aster Ferede Cheru Tesema Leshargie Fasil Wagnew Daniel Bekele Ketema Animut Alebel | 2019 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2019,8,5: | 0 |
| 7 | Stabilization of Expansive Soil Using Biomedical Waste Incinerator Ash显示文摘Expansive soils undergo high volume change due to cyclic swelling and shrinkage behavior during the wet and dry seasons.Thus,such problematic soils should be completely avoided or properly treated when encountered as subgrade materials.In the present study,the biomedical waste incinerator ash and lime combination was proposed to stabilize expansive soil.Particle size analysis,Atterberg limits,free-swell,compaction,unconfined compression strength,and California bearing ratio tests were conducted on the natural soil and blended with 3%,5%,7%,9%,and 11%biomedical waste incinerator ash(BWIA).The optimum content of BWIA was determined based on the free-swell test results.To further investigate the relative effectiveness of the stabilizer,2%and 3%lime were also added to the optimum soil-BWIA mixture and UCS and CBR tests were also conducted.In addition,scanning electron microscopy(SEM)tests for representative stabilized samples were also conducted to examine the changes in microfabrics and structural arrangements due to bonding.The addition of BWIA has a promising effect on the index properties and strength of the expansive soil.The strength of the expansive soil significantly increased when it was blended with the optimum content of BWIA amended by 2%and 3%lime. | Asefachew Belete Tseganeh Henok Fikre Geberegziabher Ayele Tesema Chala | 2021 | Journal of Management Science & Engineering Research2021,4,2: | 0 |
