1Insights into Cronobacter sakazakii Biofilm Formation and Control Strategies in the Food Industry显示文摘Cronobacter sakazakii(C.sakazakii)is a foodborne opportunistic pathogen that can cause life-threatening invasive diseases,such as necrotizing enterocolitis,meningitis,and sepsis in infants.The potential risk of C.sakazakii contamination of powdered infant formula(PIF)is an issue that has attracted considerable attention from manufacturers,regulators,and consumers.C.sakazakii biofilms on the surfaces of equipment and in diverse food-production environments constitute a mode of cell growth that protects the pathogen from hostile environments,and are an important source of persistent contamination of food products.Bacterial biofilms are difficult to remove due to their resistant properties.Conventional cleaning and sterilizing procedures may be insufficient for biofilm control,and may lead to further biofilm development and dispersal.Consequently,novel control strategies are being developed,such as nanotechnology-based delivery systems,interspecies interactions,antimicrobial molecules of microbial origin,natural extracts,and phages.This review focuses on describing the mechanisms underlying the biofilm formation and behavior of C.sakazakii and discussing potential control strategies.Na Ling Stephen Forsythe Qingping Wu Yu Ding Jumei Zhang Haiyan Zeng 2020Engineering2020,6,4:10

9Ten questions concerning future buildings beyond zero energy and carbon neutrality显示文摘Architects and planners have been at the forefront of envisioning a future built environment for millennia. How ever,fragmental view s that emphasize one facet of the built environment,such as energy,environment,or groundbreaking technologies,often do not achieve expected outcomes. Buildings are responsible for approximately one-third of w orldw ide carbon emissions and account for about 40% of primary energy consumption in the U. S. In addition to achieving the very ambitious goal of reducing building-associated greenhouse gas emissions by75% by 2050,buildings must improve their functionality and performance to meet current and future human,societal,and environmental needs in a changing w orld. In this article,w e introduce a new framew ork to guide potential evolution of the building stock in the next century,based on greenhouse gas emissions as the common thread to investigate the potential implications of new design paradigms,innovative operational strategies,and disruptive technologies. This framew ork emphasizes integration of multidisciplinary know ledge,scalability for mainstream buildings,and proactive approaches considering constraints and unknow ns.The framew ork integrates the interrelated aspects of the built environment through a series of quantitative metrics that aim to improve environmental outcomes w hile optimizing building performance to achieve healthy,adaptive,and productive buildings.Na Wang Patrick E. 17Tissue and regional expression patterns of dicistronic tRNA–mRNA transcripts in grapevine (Vitis vinifera) and their evolutionary co-appearance with vasculature in land plants显示文摘Transfer RNAs(tRNA)are crucial adaptor molecules between messenger RNA(mRNA)and amino acids.Recent evidence in plants suggests that dicistronic tRNA-like structures also act as mobile signals for mRNA transcripts to move between distant tissues.Co-transcription is not a common feature in the plant nuclear genome and,in the few cases where polycistronic transcripts have been found,they include non-coding RNA species,such as small nucleolar RNAs and microRNAs.It is not known,however,the extent to which dicistronic transcripts of tRNA and mRNAs are expressed in field-grown plants,or the factors contributing to their expression.We analysed tRNA–mRNA dicistronic transcripts in the major horticultural crop grapevine(Vitis vinifera)using a novel pipeline developed to identify dicistronic transcripts from high-throughput RNA-sequencing data.We identified dicistronic tRNA–mRNA in leaf and berry samples from 22 commercial vineyards.Of the 124 tRNA genes that were expressed in both tissues,18 tRNA were expressed forming part of 19 dicistronic tRNA–mRNAs.The presence and abundance of dicistronic molecules was tissue and geographic sub-region specific.In leaves,the expression patterns of dicistronic tRNA–mRNAs significantly correlated with tRNA expression,suggesting that their transcriptional regulation might be linked.We also found evidence of syntenic genomic arrangements of tRNAs and protein-coding genes between grapevine and Arabidopsis thaliana,and widespread prevalence of dicistronic tRNA–mRNA transcripts among vascular land plants but no evidence of these transcripts in non-vascular lineages.This suggests that the appearance of plant vasculature and tRNA–mRNA occurred concurrently during the evolution of land plants.Pastor Jullian Fabres Lakshay Anand Na Sai Stephen Pederson Fei Zheng Alexander A.Stewart Benjamin Clements Edwin R.Lampugnani James Breen Matthew Gilliham Penny Tricker Carlos M.Rodriguez Lopez Rakesh David 2021Horticulture Research2021,8,1:0
18Vitamin A supplementation downregulates ADH1C and ALDH1A1 mRNA expression in weaned beef calves显示文摘Our previous studies demonstrated that oral vitamin A supplementation during late-stage pregnancy and the neonatal stage enhances birth weight,growth performance,and mRNA expression related to muscle and preadipocyte development in beef cattle.The alcohol dehydrogenase 1C(ADH1C)c.-64T>C genotype also correlated with vitamin A concentration in beef production.This study aimed to investigate the effects of vitamin A supplementation on the muscle development and vitamin A metabolism in weaned beef calves with different ADH1C genotypes.Twenty male calves(90 d of age;initial BW:89.03 kg[SD 8.60])were stratified according to ADH1C genotype and vitamin A treatment(duration:3 months)and randomly assigned to 4 groups with a 22 factorial arrangement.Vitamin A treatments included the following:control(10,000 IU/kg of as-fed,a.TT type;b.TC type);treatment(40,000 IU/kg of as-fed,c.TT type;and d.TC type).Parameters including BW,FI,blood,longissimus dorsi muscle,and liver status during the experimental period were analyzed using the generalized linear model(GLM)procedure and Tukey's test by SAS 9.4 program.Serum vitamin A was significantly increased(P<0.05)in the vitamin A treatment group at 4 and 6 months of age.TT type calves showed higher serum vitamin A concentration(P<0.05)than the TC type calves.Serum triglyceride and non-esterified fatty acid(NEFA)levels increased(P<0.05)in the treatment group compared with the control at 6 months of age.However,BW,ADG and FI showed no differences between the groups.In addition,mRNA expression in longissimus dorsi muscle revealed upregulation of paired box 7(PAX7)(P<0.05)after the vitamin A treatment period based on biopsy results.Both ADH1C and aldehyde dehydrogenase(ALDH)1A1 mRNA expression was downregulated(P<0.01)by vitamin A supplementation.The TC type of ADH1C showed higher mRNA expression than the TT type.However,no effect was observed on adipogenic mRNA expression(preadipocyte factor-1[PREF-1],peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma[PPARg],fatty acid binding protein 4[FABP4])in all groups.Our findings suggest that weaned calves treated with vitamin A may promote the storage of satellite cells by elevating PAX7 gene expression in the muscle.The TC type calves may show increased capacity for vitamin A metabolism,which can be used in genetically customizing feed management to maximize beef production in the calves.Xue Cheng Jin Dong Qiao Peng Seong Jin Kim Na Yeon Kim Jalil Ghassemi Nejad Danil Kim Stephen B.Smith Hong Gu Lee 2022Animal Nutrition2022,,3:0
