1Micromechanics of breakage in sharp-edge particles using combined DEM and FEM显示文摘By combining DEM(Discrete Element Method)and FEM(Finite Element Method),a model is established to simulate the breakage of two-dimensional sharp-edge particles,in which the simulated particles are assumed to have no cracks.Particles can,however,crush during different stages of the numerical analysis,if stress-based breakage criteria are fulfilled inside the particles.With this model,it is possible to study the influence of particle breakage on macro-and micro-mechanical behavior of simulated angular materials.Two series of tests,with and without breakable particles,are simulated under different confining pressures based on conditions of biaxial tests.The results,presented in terms of micromechanical behavior for different confining pressures,are compared with macroparameters.The influence of particle breakage on microstructure of sharp-edge materials is discussed and the related confining pressure effects are investigated.Breakage of particles in rockfill materials are shown to reduce the anisotropy coefficients of the samples and therefore their strength and dilation behaviors.Ahad Bagherzadeh-Khalkhali Ali Asghar Mirghasemi Soheil Mohammadi 2008Particuology2008,6,5:8
2Recrystallization and mechanical properties of WE43 magnesium alloy processed via cyclic expansion extrusion显示文摘In this study, cyclic expansion extrusion(CEE), as a relatively new severe plastic deformation(SPD) process, is applied to a rare earth(RE) containing Mg alloy WE43. The effects of the processing temperature and the number of passes are also investigated. The results showed that dynamic recrystallization(DRX) occurred after CEE processing at 400°C, and a bimodal structure with ultrafine DRXed grains surrounded the unrecrystallized grains. However, the DRX at 330°C was retarded because of the existence of RE elements. The tensile tests showed that a simultaneous increase in the strength and the ductility of WE43 is obtained after CEE processing at 400°C via two passes. Furthermore, the highest ultimate tensile strength of 440 MPa was achieved after the second pass of CEE at 330°C, and the highest ductility of 21% was attained after the second pass of CEE at 400°C. The microhardness measurements showed that the hardness increased from HV 80 to HV 114 and HV 98 after two passes of CEE processing at 330 and 400°C, respectively. In conclusion, increasing the processing passes could increase the mechanical properties and the volume fraction of the recrystallized grains. 3Prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection among hemodialysis patients in the Middle-East: A systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘AIM To determine hepatitis C virus(HCV)infection prevalence in each country of the Middle-East and the overall prevalence of the region.METHODS In this systematic review,we gathered all documents related to HCV infection prevalence among hemodialysis patients in 17 middle-east countries from April 2006 to March 2016.We selected only cross-sectional studies that had proper sampling and measurement methods as well as a valid statistical analysis.RESULTS After screening of 7311 documents,56 studies were selected reporting the prevalence of HCV infection among hemodialysis patients from 10 countries of the region.Seven countries including United Arab Emirates,Afghanistan,Qatar,Bahrain,Kuwait,Oman,Israel,and Cyprus did not have any relevant document;thus,their latest reports were just mentioned.We performed the meta-analysis and determined the prevalence rates for each country as well as the whole region.The overall HCV infection prevalence among hemodialysis patients in the region was reported to be 25.3%;Egypt and Syria had the highest reported rates while Iran and Lebanon had the lowest.Further investigations are still needed to provide more reliable databases,find main risk factors,and to improve diagnosis and treatment plans,particularly in higher prevalent countries.CONCLUSION Controlling the prevalence and improving the management methods of HCV infection among hemodialysis patients are of a great concern in the Middle-East region.Soheil Ashkani-Esfahani Seyed Moayed Alavian Mohammad Salehi-Marzijarani 2017World Journal of Gastroenterology2017,23,1:7

5Single-step transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy in high myopia:qualitative and quantitative visual functions显示文摘AIM:To investigate quantitative and qualitative optical outcomes of single-step transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy(Trans PRK)in high myopia.METHODS:In a prospective interventional case-series,30 eyes with high myopia(-6.00 to-8.75 D)with(up to-3.00 D)or without astigmatism were enrolled from Bina Eye Hospital,Tehran,Iran. One-step Trans PRK was performed with aberration-free aspherical optimized profile and SCHWIND AMARIS 500 laser. One-year follow-up results for refraction,visual acuities,vector analysis,ocular wavefront(OWF)and corneal wave-front(CWF)higher order aberrations(HOA),contrast sensitivity(CS),and postoperative haze were assessed.RESULTS:After the surgery,both photopic and mesopic CSs significantly improved(both P<0.001). We detected significant induction of OWF coma and trefoil(P<0.001 for both)HOAs; CWF coma(P=0.002),spherical(P<0.001),and tetrafoil(P=0.003)HOAs in 6 mm analysis diameter; and CWF trefoil(P=0.04)HOA in 4 mm analysis diameter. The range of mean induction observed for various HOAs was0.005-0.11 μm. The 86.7% of eyes reached an uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/20 or better; 96.7% of eyes were within ±0.5 D of targeted spherical refraction. In vector analysis,mean correction index value was 1.03 and mean index of success was 0.22. By 12mo after the operation,no eye lost any number of corrected distancevisual acuity lines. We detected no corneal haze greater than 1^+ throughout the follow-up.CONCLUSION:Our findings show promising effects of single-step Trans PRK on quality of vision in high myopic eyes. 7Numerical analysis of rock fracturing by gas pressure using the extended finite element method显示文摘High energy gas fracturing is a simple approach of applying high pressure gas to stimulate wells by generating several radial cracks without creating any other damages to the wells.In this paper,a numerical algorithm is proposed to quantitatively simulate propagation of these fractures around a pressurized hole as a quasi-static phenomenon.The gas flow through the cracks is assumed as a one-dimensional transient flow,governed by equations of conservation of mass and momentum.The fractured medium is modeled with the extended finite element method,and the stress intensity factor is calculated by the simple,though sufficiently accurate,displacement extrapolation method.To evaluate the proposed algorithm,two field tests are simulated and the unknown parameters are determined through calibration.Sensitivity analyses are performed on the main effective parameters.Considering that the level of uncertainty is very high in these types of engineering problems,the results show a good agreement with the experimental data.They are also consistent with the theory that the final crack length is mainly determined by the gas pressure rather than the initial crack length produced by the stress waves.Majid Goodarzi Soheil Mohammadi Ahmad Jafari 2015Petroleum Science2015,12,2:6
8Clayey soil stabilization using alkali-activated volcanic ash and slag显示文摘Lime and Portland cement are the most widely used binders in soil stabilization projects.However,due to the high carbon emission in cement production,research on soil stabilization by the use of more environmentally-friendly binders with lower carbon footprint has attracted much attention in recent years.This research investigated the potential of using alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS)and volcanic ash(VA)as green binders in clayey soil stabilization projects,which has not been studied before.The effects of different combinations of VA with GGBS,various liquid/solid ratios,different curing conditions,and different curing periods(i.e.7 d,28 d and 90 d)were investigated.Compressive strength and durability of specimens against wet-dry and freeze-thaw cycles were then studied through the use of mechanical and microstructural tests.The results demonstrated that the coexistence of GGBS and VA in geopolymerization process was more effective due to the synergic formation of N-A-S-H and C-(A)-S-H gels.Moreover,although VA needs heat curing to become activated and develop strength,its partial replacement with GGBS made the binder suitable for application at ambient temperature and resulted in a remarkably superior resistance against wet-dry and freeze-thaw cycles.The carbon embodied of the mixtures was also evaluated,and the results confirmed the low carbon footprints of the alkali-activated mixtures.Finally,it was concluded that the alkali-activated GGBS/VA could be promisingly used in clayey soil stabilization projects instead of conventional binders.Hania Miraki Nader Shariatmadari Pooria Ghadir Soheil Jahandari Zhong Tao Rafat Siddique 2022Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2022,14,2:5

11A collaborative approach for urban underground space development toward sustainable development goals:Critical dimensions and future directions显示文摘The utilization of urban underground space(UUS)offers an effective solution to urban problems but may also negatively affect urban development.Therefore,UUS development needs better concerted guidelines to coordinate various urban systems and the multiple components of the underground world.Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),which should be viewed as important yardsticks for UUS development,do not explicitly mention urban underground space,although many of them are affected by both the positive and negative consequences of its development.To fill this gap,this review lays the foundations of relevant UUS concepts and uses exemplary cases to reveal that 11 out of 17 SDGs can be linked with UUS uses.These linkages also manifest that land administration,integrated planning,architectural design,and construction technology are critical dimensions for increasing the contributions of UUS to the realization of SDGs.To achieve multi-disciplinary synergies among these four critical dimensions,a collaborative approach framework based on spatial data infrastructure is required.Thus,this work provides academics and practitioners with a holistic view of sustainable UUS development.Fang-Le PENG Yong-Kang QIAO Soheil SABRI Behnam ATAZADEH Abbas RAJABIFARD 2021Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2021,15,1:4
12Effect of curing, capillary action, and groundwater level increment on geotechnical properties of lime concrete: Experimental and prediction studies显示文摘Lime concrete and lime treatment are two attractive techniques for geotechnical engineers.However,researches have rarely been carried out to study the effects of moisture and capillary action due to increasing groundwater level on geotechnical properties of lime concrete.The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of curing time and degree of saturation on some of geotechnical properties of lime concrete such as unconfined compressive strength(UCS),secant modulus(E_S),failure strain,brittleness index(I_B),and deformability index(I_D) using unconfined compression tests.First of all,geotechnical and chemical properties of used materials were determined.After curing times of 14 d,28 d,45 d,and 60 d in laboratory condition,the specimens were exposed to saturation levels ranging from 0 to 100%.The results showed that the moisture and curing time have significant effects on the properties of lime concrete.Based on the results of scanning electron micrograph(SEM) test,it was observed that the specimen was characterized by a rather well-structured matrix since both the filling of a large proportion of the coarse-grained soil voids by clay and the pozzolanic activity of lime led to retaining less pore water in the specimen,increasing the UCS and E_S,and consequently resisting against swelling and shrinkage of the clay soil.Moreover,due to the pozzolanic reactions and reduction of water,by increasing the curing time and decreasing the degrees of saturation,UCS,E_S,and I_B increased,and I_D decreased.Based on the experimental results,a phenomenological model was used to develop equations for predicting the properties in relation to the ratio of degree of saturation/curing time.The results showed that there was a good correlation(almost R^2 > 90%) between the measured parameters and the estimated ones given by the predicted equations.Mohammad Saberian Soheil Jahandari Jie Li Farzad Zivari 2017Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2017,9,4:3
13Advanced optimization of gas turbine aero-engine transient performance using linkage-learning genetic algorithm:PartⅡ,optimization in flight mission and controller gains correlation development显示文摘PartⅠhas illustrated the procedures to apply the Linkage Learning Genetic Algorithm(LLGA)in Gas Turbine Engine(GTE)controller gains tuning and generated the optimization results for runway conditions from idle to takeoff.However,the total pressure and temperature of the engine inlet vary as the changing of altitude and Mach number,which would lead to the variation in fuel flow supply regulation.As a result,the optimized gains in runway might not be suitable for other flight conditions.In order to maintain the optimal control performance,the GTE controller gains should be adjusted according to the flight conditions.This paper extends the application of the LLGA method to other flight conditions and then simulates a complete flight mission with different gains and weather condition configurations.For this purpose,the control parameters in the Simulink model of the GTE controller are first corrected by the weather condition in altitude.Then,a typical flight mission is defined and divided into different flight segments based on the altitude and Mach number configuration.One representative point is selected from each segment as the datum point for optimization process.After this step,the LLGA method is used to find the best gains combinations for different flight conditions and the differences in optimization effects for different flight conditions are analyzed subsequently.The simulation results show that the optimization effect of the control performance of each flight condition is dependent on the value of(θδ)~(1/2)and the optimal K_(pla)in some flight conditions is approximately equal to p hd times of the Kplavalue in sea level standard condition.Finally,the complete flight mission is simulated with different gains and weather condition configurations.The simulation results show that the engine performance has been greatly improved after optimization by LLGA in the transient state and the high altitude conditions.In other steady states,the optimization effect is not very obvious.Yinfeng LIU Soheil JAFARI Theoklis NIKOLAIDIS 2021Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2021,34,4:3

17Effect of Low-Pressure Nitrogen DC Plasma Treatment on the Surface Properties of Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene, Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) and Polyvinyl Chloride Films显示文摘In this study, commercial biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films were treated with nitrogen plasma over different exposure times in a Pyrex tube surrounded by a DC variable magnetic field. The chemical changes that appeared on the surface of the samples were investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR- FTIR) spectroscopy after treatment for 2 min, 4 min and 6 min in a nitrogen plasma chamber. Effects of the plasma treatment on the surface topographies and contact angles of the untreated and plasma treated films were also analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and a contact angle measuring system. The results show that the plasma treated films become more hydrophilic with an enhanced wettability due to the formation of some new polar groups on the surface of the treated films. Moreover, at higher exposure times, the total surface energy in all treated films increased while a reduction in contact angle occurred. 19Ground characterization and roof mapping: Online sensor signal-based change detection显示文摘Measurement while drilling systems are becoming an important part of excavation operations for rock characterization and ground support design that require reliable information on rock strength and location & frequency of joints or voids. This paper focuses on improving rock characterization algorithms for instrumented roof-bolter systems. For this purpose, an improved void detection algorithm is proposed,where the underlying theory is built upon the concept of mean change detection based on the feed pressure signals. In addition, the application of acoustic sensing for void detection is examined and it is shown that the variance of the filtered acoustic signal is correlated to the strength of the material being drilled. The proposed algorithm has been validated on the data collected from full-scale drilling tests in various concrete and rock samples at the J. H.
