1CD74 is a survival receptor on colon epithelial cells显示文摘AIM: To investigate the expression and function of CD74 in normal murine colon epithelial cells (CEC) and colon carcinoma cells. METHODS: Expression of CD74 mRNA and protein were measured by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Western blotting and fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS). The effect of migration inhibitory factor (MIF) on the survival of normal CEC from C57BL/6, NOD/SCID, and CD74 def icient mice both in vitro and in vivo, and on the CT26 carcinoma cell line was analyzed by (quantitative) qRT-PCR, RTPCR, Western blotting and FACS. RESULTS: CD74 was found to be expressed on normalCEC. Stimulation of CD74 by MIF induced a signaling cascade leading to up-regulation of Bcl-2 expression, resulting in a signif icant increased survival of CEC. 2Metal-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation in marine sediment:insights from marine settings and other systems显示文摘Anaerobic oxidation of methane(AOM) plays a crucial role in controlling global methane emission. This is a microbial process that relies on the reduction of external electron acceptors such as sulfate, nitrate/nitrite, and transient metal ions. In marine settings, the dominant electron acceptor for AOM is sulfate, while other known electron acceptors are transient metal ions such as iron and manganese oxides. Despite the AOM process coupled with sulfate reduction being relatively well characterized,researches on metal-dependent AOM process are few, and no microorganism has to date been identified as being responsible for this reaction in natural marine environments. In this review, geochemical evidences of metal-dependent AOM from sediment cores in various marine environments are summarized. Studies have showed that iron and manganese are reduced in accordance with methane oxidation in seeps or diffusive profiles below the methanogenesis zone. The potential biochemical basis and mechanisms for metal-dependent AOM processes are here presented and discussed. 3Potential antioxidant and cytoprotective effects of essential oil extracted from Cymbopogon citratus on OxLDL and H_(2)O_(2) LDL induced Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells(PBMC)显示文摘Cymbopogon citratus(lemon grass)is commonly used in traditional folk medicine.The essential oil extracted from C.citratus has been reported as a potential anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.This study has been designed to explore the protective effect of C.citratus(lemon grass)against modified LDL(OxLDL and H2O2 LDL)induced cytotoxicity in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells(PBMC).The essential oil extracted from C.citratus(EOC)was subjected to FT-IR spectroscopic analysis for the identification of functional groups.In vitro antioxidant assays were carried out to assess the electron donating capability of EOC as compared with a known standard L-ascorbic acid.The cytoprotective effects of EOC were determined in PBMC induced with modified LDL.Spectra obtained from FT-IR analysis showed the presence of functional groups in EOC such as H-bonded,O-H stretching,N-H stretching,aldehyde-C-H stretching,aldehyde/ketone-C=O stretching,-C=C-stretching,-CH_(3) bending,-C-H in plane bending.EOC has greater antioxidant property when compared with the standard L-ascorbic acid.EOC at all test concentrations demonstrated free radical scavenging activity and cytoprotective effect when challenged against modified LDL in PBMC.The above results show EOC as a promising antioxidant and cytoprotective agent.S.Jamuna Sakeena Sadullah M.S. 5“Hot”electrons in metallic nanostructures—nonthermal carriers or heating?显示文摘Understanding the interplay between illumination and the electron distribution in metallic nanostructures is a crucial step towards developing applications such as plasmonic photocatalysis for green fuels,nanoscale photodetection and more.Elucidating this interplay is challenging,as it requires taking into account all channels of energy flow in the electronic system.Here,we develop such a theory,which is based on a coupled Boltzmann-heat equations and requires only energy conservation and basic thermodynamics,where the electron distribution,and the electron and phonon(lattice)temperatures are determined uniquely.Applying this theory to realistic illuminated nanoparticle systems,we find that the electron and phonon temperatures are similar,thus justifying the(classical)singletemperature models.We show that while the fraction of high-energy“hot”carriers compared to thermalized carriers grows substantially with illumination intensity,it remains extremely small(on the order of 10^(-8)).Importantly,most of the absorbed illumination power goes into heating rather than generating hot carriers,thus rendering plasmonic hot carrier generation extremely inefficient.Our formulation allows for the first time a unique quantitative comparison of theory and measurements of steady-state electron distributions in metallic nanostructures.Yonatan Dubi Yonatan Sivan 2019Light(Science & Applications)2019,8,1:3
6Connecting Malfunctioning Glial Cells and Brain Degenerative Disorders显示文摘The DNA damage response(DDR) is a complex biological system activated by different types of DNA damage.Mutations in certain components of the DDR machinery can lead to genomic instability disorders that culminate in tissue degeneration,premature aging,and various types of cancers.Intriguingly,malfunctioning DDR plays a role in the etiology of late onset brain degenerative disorders such as Parkinson's,Alzheimer's,and Huntington's diseases.For many years,brain degenerative disorders were thought to result from aberrant neural death.Here we discuss the evidence that supports our novel hypothesis that brain degenerative diseases involve dysfunction of glial cells(astrocytes,microglia,and oligodendrocytes).Impairment in the functionality of glial cells results in pathological neuro-glial interactions that,in turn,generate a ‘‘hostile' environment that impairs the functionality of neuronal cells.These events can lead to systematic neural demise on a scale that appears to be proportional to the severity of the neurological deficit.Natalie Kaminsky Ofer Bihari Sivan Kanner Ari Barzilai 2016Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics2016,14,3:2
7Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and gastrointestinal morbidity in a large cohort of young adults显示文摘BACKGROUND Although the association of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD)with psychiatric disorders is well known,its association with somatic diseases is unclear.Only few studies have investigated the gastrointestinal(GI)morbidity in adult patients with ADHD.AIM To measure gastrointestinal comorbidity and its burden on healthcare in young adults with ADHD.METHODS The cohort included subjects aged 17-35 years recruited to the Israel Defense Forces in 2007-2013,33380 with ADHD and 355652 without(controls).The groups were compared for functional and inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and clinic and specialist visits for gastrointestinal symptoms/disease during service(to 2016).Findings were analyzed by generalized linear models adjusted for background variables.RESULTS Compared to controls,the ADHD group had more diagnoses of functional gastrointestinal disorders(referred to as FGID),namely,dyspepsia[odds ratio(OR):1.48,95%confidence interval(CI):1.40-1.57,P<0.001],chronic constipation(OR:1.64,95%CI:1.48-1.81,P<0.001),and irritable bowel syndrome(OR:1.67,95%CI:1.56-1.80,P<0.001)but not of organic disorders(inflammatory bowel disease,celiac disease).They had more frequent primary care visits for gastrointestinal symptoms[rate ratio(RR):1.25,95%CI:1.24-1.26,P<0.001]and referrals to gastrointestinal specialists(RR:1.96,95%CI:1.88-2.03,P<0.001)and more episodes of recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms(RR:1.29,95%CI:1.21-1.38,P<0.001).Methylphenidate use increased the risk of dyspepsia(OR:1.49,95%CI:1.28-1.73,P<0.001)and constipation(OR:1.42,95%CI:1.09-1.84,P=0.009).CONCLUSION ADHD in young adults is associated with an excess of FGID and increased use of related health services.Research is needed to determine if an integrative approach treating both conditions will benefit these patients and cut costs.Sivan Kedem Shlomit Yust-Katz Dan Carter Zohar Levi Ron Kedem Adi Dickstein Salah Daher Lior H Katz 2020World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,42:2
