Microalgae:A potential alternative to health supplementation for humans显示文摘Microalgae has been consumed in human diet for thousands of years. It is an under-exploited crop for production of dietary foods.Microalgae cultivation does not compete with land and resources required for traditional crops and has a superior yield compared to terrestrial crops. Its high protein content has exhibited a huge potential to meet the dietary requirements of growing population.Apart from being a source of protein, presence of various bio-active components in microalgae provide an added health benefit. This review describes various microalgal sources of proteins and other bio-active components. One of the heavily studied group of bio-active components are pigments due to their anticarcenogenic, antioxidative and antihypertensive properties.Compared to various plant and floral species, microalgae contain higher amounts of pigments.Microalgal derived proteins have complete Essential Amino Acids(EAA)profiles and their protein content is higher than conventional sources such as meat, poultry and dairy products. However, microalgal based functional foods have not flooded the market. The lack of awareness coupled with scarce incentives for producers result in under-exploitation of microalgal potential.Application of microalgal derived components as dietary and nutraceutical supplements is discussed comprehensively.Apurav Krishna Koyande Kit Wayne Chew Krishnamoorthy Rambabu Yang Tao Dinh-Toi Chu Pau-Loke Show 2019Food Science and Human Wellness2019,8,1:10
Role of biochar surface characteristics in the adsorption of aromatic compounds:Pore structure and functional groups显示文摘Biochar(BC)are widely used as highly efficient adsorbents to alleviate aromatics-based contaminants due to their ease of preparation, wide availability, and high sustainability. The surface properties of BCs usually vary greatly due to their complex chemical constituents and different preparation processes and are reflected in the values of parameters such as the specific surface area(SSA),pore volume/size,and surface functional groups(SFGs).The effects of SSA and pore volume/size on the adsorption of aromatics have been widely reported. However, the corresponding mechanisms of BC SFGs towards aromatics adsorption remains unclear as the compositions of the SFGs are usually complex and hard to determine. To address in this gap in the literature, this review introduces a new perspective on the adsorption mechanisms of aromatics.Through collecting previously-reported results, the parameters log P(logarithm of the Kow),polar surface area, and the positive/negative charges were carefully calculated using Chem Draw3D,which allowed the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity properties, electron donor-acceptor interactions,Hbonding, and electrostatic interactions between SFGs and aromatics-based contaminates to be inferred intuitively. These predictions were consistent with the reported results and showed that tailor-made BCs can be designed according to the molecular weights, chemical structures, and polarities of the target aromatics.Overall, this review provides new insight into predicting the physicochemical properties of BCs through revealing the relationship between SFGs and adsorbates, which may provide useful guidance for the preparing of highly-efficient,functional BCs for the adsorption of aromatics.Xue-Fei Tan Shi-Shu Zhu Ru-Peng Wang Yi-Di Chen Pau-Loke Show Feng-Fa Zhang Shih-Hsin Ho 2021Chinese Chemical Letters2021,32,10:7
Isolation of protein from Chlorella sorokiniana CY1 using liquid biphasic flotation assisted with sonication through sugaring-out effect显示文摘Microalgae,a sustainable source of multi beneficial components has been discovered and could be utilised in pharmaceutical, bioenergy and food applications. This study aims to investigate the sugaring-out effect on the recovery of protein from wet green microalga,Chlorella sorokiniana CY1 which was assisted with sonication.A comparison of monosaccharides and disaccharides as one of the phaseforming constituents shows that the monosaccharides, glucose was the most suitable sugar in forming the phases with acetonitrile to enhance the production of protein(52% of protein). The protein productivity of microalgae was found to be significantly influenced by the volume ratio of both phases,as the yield of protein increased to 77%.The interval time between the sonication as well as the sonication modes were influencing the protein productivity as well. The optimum protein productivity was obtained with 10s of resting time in between sonication.Pulse mode of sonication was suitable to break down the cell wall of microalgae compared to continuous mode as a lower protein yield was obtained with the application of continuous mode. The optimum condition for protein extraction were found as followed:200g/L glucose as bottom phase with volume ratio of 1:1.25,10s of resting time for ultrasonication,5s of ultrasonication in pulse mode and 0.25g of biomass weight. The high yield of protein about 81% could be obtained from microalgae which demonstrates the potential of this source and expected to play an important role in the future.CHIA Shir Reen CHEW Kit Wayne SHOW Pau Loke SIVAKUMAR Manickam LING Tau Chuan TAO Yang 2019Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2019,37,3:2
The Cosmic Dust in Suzhou Granite:Ablated Products of a Cometary ExplosionHu Zhong-wei,Wang Er-kang,Wan Yu-qiuDepartement of Astronomy,Nanjing University,Nanjing 210093,China Department of Earth Sdence,Nanjing University,Nanjing 210093,China Cosmic dust has been collected in large number from deap-sea sediments,Greenland ice deposits, the stratosphere and space,of cosmic dust, some are the unmelted micrometeorite, and most are the ablated products of me-teoroids in the atmosphere.Cosmic dusts were recovered from two sites of the 1908 Tunguska explosion and the 1965 Revelstoks explosion Since 1987,a large number of microspherules have been extracted from Suzhou granite of China Their suface and section structures, mineral and chemical composition show that these microspherules are of the ablated cosmic dust. The microspherules occurred in the inner contact complex intrusion. It suggests that the microspherules may be products of the same event and were aggergated in some strata and then captured by the emplacement of granitic magma.Although the microspherules are similare to other ablated cosmic dusts, there are some diferences. Our calculated results of cometary motion through the atmosphere and explosion show that the microspherules may be the ablated dust of a comet with mass above 1015g at its explosion near the ground. 1996紫金山天文台台刊1996,15,3:2

Biological remediation of acid mine drainage:Review of past trends and current outlook显示文摘Formation of acid mine drainage(AMD)is a widespread environmental issue that has not subsided throughout decades of continuing research.Highly acidic and highly concentrated metallic streams are characteristics of such streams.Humans, plants and surrounding ecosystems that are in proximity to AMD producing sites face immediate threats.Remediation options include active and passive biological treatments which are markedly different in many aspects.Sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB)remove sulfate and heavy metals to generate non-toxic streams.Passive systems are inexpensive to operate but entail fundamental drawbacks such as large land requirements and prolonged treatment period.Active bioreactors offer greater operational predictability and quicker treatment time but require higher investment costs and wide scale usage is limited by lack of expertise.Recent advancements include the use of renewable raw materials for AMD clean up purposes, which will likely achieve much greener mitigation solutions.K.Rambabu Fawzi Banat Quan Minh Pham Shih-Hsin Ho Nan-Qi Ren Pau Loke Show 2020Environmental Science and Ecotechnology2020,,2:2
