| 1 | Impacts of Diurnal Variation of Mountain-plain Solenoid Circulations on Precipitation and Vortices East of the Tibetan Plateau during the Mei-yu Season显示文摘Diurnal variations of two mountain-plain solenoid(MPS) circulations associated with 'first-step' terrain [Tibetan Plateau(TP)] and 'second-step' terrain(high mountains between the TP and 'east plains') in China and their influence on the southwest vortex(SWV) and the mei-yu front vortex(MYFV) were investigated via a semi-idealized mesoscale numerical model [Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF)] simulation integrated with ten-day average fields(mei-yu period of 1–10 July 2007). The simulations successfully reproduced two MPS circulations related to first- and second-step terrain, diurnal variations from the eastern edge of the TP to the Yangtze River–Huaihe River valleys(YHRV), and two precipitation maximum centers related to the SWV, MYFV. Analyses of the averaged final seven-day simulation showed the different diurnal peaks of precipitation at different regions: from the afternoon to early evening at the eastern edge of the TP; in the early evening to the next early morning in the Sichuan Basin(SCB); and in the late evening to the next early morning over the mei-yu front(MYF). Analyses of individual two-day cases confirmed that the upward branches of the nighttime MPS circulations enhanced the precipitation over the SWV and the MYFV and revealed that the eastward extension of the SWV and its convection were conducive to triggering the MYFVs. | 2 | A comparison of two kinds of eastward-moving mesoscale vortices during the mei-yu period of 2010显示文摘During the mei-yu period,the east edge of the Tibetan Plateau and the Dabie Mountain are two main sources of eastward-moving mesoscale vortices along the mei-yu front(MYF).In this study,an eastward-moving southwest vortex(SWV) and an eastward-moving Dabie vortex(DBV) during the mei-yu period of 2010 have been investigated to clarify the main similarities and differences between them.The synoptic analyses reveal that the SWV and DBV were both located at the lower troposphere;however,the SWV developed in a 'from top down' trend,whereas the DBV developed in an opposite way.There were obvious surface closed low centers corresponding to the DBV during its life span,whereas for the SWV,the closed low center only appeared at the mature stage.Cold and warm air intersected intensely after the formation of both the vortices,and the cold advection in the SWV case was stronger than that in the DBV case,whereas the warm advection in the DBV case was more intense than that in the SWV case.The Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea were main moisture sources for the SWV,whereas for the DBV,in addition to the above two moisture sources,the East China Sea was also an important moisture source.The vorticity budget indicates that the convergence was the most important common factor conducive to the formation,development,and maintenance of the SWV and DBV,whereas the conversion from the vertical vorticity to the horizontal one(tilting) was the most important common factor caused the dissipation of both of the vortices.The kinetic energy(KE) budget reveals that the KE generation by the rotational wind was the dominant factor for the enhancement of KE associated with the SWV,whereas for the DBV,the KE transport by the rotational wind was more important than the KE generation.The KE associated with the SWV and the DBV weakened with different mechanisms during the decaying stage.Furthermore,the characteristics of baroclinic and barotropic energy conversions during the life spans of both vortices indicate that the SWV and DBV both belong to the kind of subtropical mesoscale vortices. | FU ShenMing YU Fei WANG DongHai XIA RuDi | 2013 | Science China Earth Sciences2013,56,2: | 18 |
| 3 | A Review of Research on Warm-Sector Heavy Rainfall in China显示文摘Warm-sector heavy rainfall (WSHR) events in China have been investigated for many years. Studies have investigated the synoptic weather conditions during WSHR formation, the categories and general features, the triggering mechanism, and structural features of mesoscale convective systems during these rainfall events. The main results of WSHR studies in recent years are summarized in this paper. However, WSHR caused by micro- to mesoscale systems often occurs abruptly and locally, making both numerical model predictions and objective forecasts difficult. Further research is needed in three areas:(1) The mechanisms controlling WSHR events need to be understood to clarify the specific effects of various factors and indicate the influences of these factors under different synoptic background circulations. This would enable an understanding of the mechanisms of formation, maintenance, and organization of the convections in WSHR events.(2) In addition to South China, WSHR events also occur during the concentrated summer precipitation in the Yangtze River-Huaihe River Valley and North China. A high spatial and temporal resolution dataset should be used to analyze the distribution and environmental conditions, and to further compare the differences and similarities of the triggering and maintenance mechanisms of WSHR events in different regions.(3) More studies of the mechanisms are required, as well as improvements to the model initial conditions and physical processes based on multi-source observations, especially the description of the triggering process and the microphysical parameterization. | 5 | Simulation of Quasi-Linear Mesoscale Convective Systems in Northern China:Lightning Activities and Storm Structure显示文摘Two intense quasi-linear mesoscale convective systems(QLMCSs) in northern China were simulated using the WRF(Weather Research and Forecasting) model and the 3D-Var(three-dimensional variational) analysis system of the ARPS(Advanced Regional Prediction System) model.A new method in which the lightning density is calculated using both the precipitation and non-precipitation ice mass was developed to reveal the relationship between the lightning activities and QLMCS structures.Results indicate that,compared with calculating the results using two previous methods,the lightning density calculated using the new method presented in this study is in better accordance with observations.Based on the calculated lightning densities using the new method,it was found that most lightning activity was initiated on the right side and at the front of the QLMCSs,where the surface wind field converged intensely.The CAPE was much stronger ahead of the southeastward progressing QLMCS than to the back it,and their lightning events mainly occurred in regions with a large gradient of CAPE.Comparisons between lightning and non-lightning regions indicated that lightning regions featured more intense ascending motion than non-lightning regions;the vertical ranges of maximum reflectivity between lightning and non-lightning regions were very different;and the ice mixing ratio featured no significant differences between the lightning and non-lightning regions. | Wanli LI Xiushu QIE Shenming FU Debin SU Yonghai SHEN | 2016 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2016,33,1: | 7 |
| 6 | Effects of chronic heat stress on granulosa cell apoptosis and follicular atresia in mouse ovary显示文摘Background: Heat stress is known to alter follicular dynamics and granulosa cell function and may contribute to the diminished reproductive efficiency commonly observed in mammals during the summer. Although several investigators have studied heat-induced ovarian injury, few reports have focused on the effects of chronic heat stress on ovarian function and the molecular mechanisms through which it induces ovarian injury.Methods: In Exp. 1, 48 female mice were assigned to a control or heat-stressed treatment. After exposure to a constant temperature of 25 °C for 7, 14, 21 or 28 d(n = 6) or to 42 °C for 3 h per d for 7, 14, 21 or 28 d(n = 6), the mice were euthanized and their ovaries were analyzed for follicular atresia, granulosa cell apoptosis, changes in the abundance of HSP70 protein and serum concentrations of estradiol. In Exp. 2, the expression of HSP70 and aromatase was quantified in antral follicles cultured in vitro at 37 or 42 °C for 24 h. In Exp. 3, granulosa cells from ovaries maintained at 37 or 41 °C for 2 h were analyzed for their expression of HSP70, Bim, caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-3.Results: In Exp. 1, body weight and food intake of heat-stressed mice decreased(P < 0.05) compared with control mice while the concentration of estradiol in serum was lower(P < 0.05) in heat-stressed mice than in control mice. Compared with control mice, the percentage of atretic follicles and the number of antral follicles with severe apoptotic signals were increased(P < 0.05) after 21 d of heat-stressed treatment. HSP70 protein was more abundant(P < 0.05) in heat-stressed mice than control mice. In Exp. 2, heat stress increased HSP70 and decreased aromatase proteins(P < 0.05) in antral follicles. | 7 | Main Energy Paths and Energy Cascade Processes of the Two Types of Persistent Heavy Rainfall Events over the Yangtze River–Huaihe River Basin显示文摘Two types of persistent heavy rainfall events(PHREs) over the Yangtze River–Huaihe River Basin were determined in a recent statistical study: type A, whose precipitation is mainly located to the south of the Yangtze River; and type B, whose precipitation is mainly located to the north of the river. The present study investigated these two PHRE types using a newly derived set of energy equations to show the scale interaction and main energy paths contributing to the persistence of the precipitation. The main results were as follows. The available potential energy(APE) and kinetic energy(KE) associated with both PHRE types generally increased upward in the troposphere, with the energy of the type-A PHREs stronger than that of the type-B PHREs(except for in the middle troposphere). There were two main common and universal energy paths of the two PHRE types:(1) the baroclinic energy conversion from APE to KE was the dominant energy source for the evolution of large-scale background circulations; and(2) the downscaled energy cascade processes of KE and APE were vital for sustaining the eddy flow, which directly caused the PHREs. | 20 | Super-Resolution for Face Image with an Improved K-NN Search Strategy显示文摘Recently, neighbor embedding based face super-resolution(SR) methods have shown the ability for achieving high-quality face images, those methods are based on the assumption that the same neighborhoods are preserved in both low-resolution(LR) training set and high-resolution(HR) training set. However, due to the 'one-to-many' mapping between the LR image and HR ones in practice, the neighborhood relationship of the LR patch in LR space is quite different with that of the HR counterpart, that is to say the neighborhood relationship obtained is not true. In this paper, we explore a novel and effective re-identified K-nearest neighbor(RIKNN) method to search neighbors of LR patch. Compared with other methods, our method uses the geometrical information of LR manifold and HR manifold simultaneously. In particular, it searches K-NN of LR patch in the LR space and refines the searching results by re-identifying in the HR space, thus giving rise to accurate K-NN and improved performance.
