| 1 | Effects of contact lens wearing on keratoconus:a confocal microscopy observation显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the corneal cell morphology of new keratoconus patients wearing two different types of rigid gas-permeable(RGP) contact lenses for 1y.METHODS: Thirty nine eyes of 39 new keratoconus patients were selected and randomly fitted with two types of RGP contact lenses.Group 1 had 21 eyes with regular rigid gas-permeable(RRGP) contact lens and rest 18 eyes were in group 2 with specially designed rigid gas-permeable(SRGP) contact lens.Corneal cell morphology was evaluated using a slit scanning confocal microscope at no-lens wear and after 1y of contact lens wearing.RESULTS: After 1y of contact lens wearing in group 1,the mean anterior and posterior stromal keratocyte density were significantly less(P=0.006 and P=0.001,respectively) compared to no-lens wear.The mean cell area of anterior and posterior stromal keratocyte were also significantly different(P=0.005 and P=0.001) from no-lens wear.The anterior and posterior stromal haze increased by 18.74% and 23.81%,respectively after 1y of contact lens wearing.Whereas in group 2,statistically significant changes were observed only in cell density & area of anterior stroma(P=0.001 and P=0.001,respectively) after 1y.While,level of anterior and posterior stromal haze increased by 16.67% and 11.11% after 1y of contact lens wearing.Polymegathism and pleomorphism also increased after 1y of contact lens wearing in both the contact lens groups.CONCLUSION: Confocal microscopy observation shows the significant alterations in corneal cell morphology of keratoconic corneas wearing contact lenses especially in group 1.The type of contact lens must be carefully selected to minimize changes in corneal cell morphology. | Somnath Ghosh Haliza A Mutalib Sharanjeet Kaur Rituparna Ghoshal Shamala Retnasabapathy | 2017 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2017,10,2: | 4 |
| 2 | Long Term Salinity Stress Reveals Variety Specific Differences in Root Oxidative Stress Response显示文摘Salinity stress induces oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species(ROS):superoxide radicals,hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) and hydroxyl radicals.Activities of both enzymatic and non-enzymatic components of the antioxidant system and related growth parameters were studied in the roots of the salt tolerant rice variety FL478 and the sensitive variety IR29 in response to long term stress(12 d) induced by 50 mmol/L NaCl.The comparative study showed that FL478 maintained higher relative growth rate and lower Na+/K+ in the roots than IR29 due to a higher membrane stability index that effectively exclude Na+.Lower TBARS(thiobarbituric acid reactive substance) content in FL478 roots indicated that its membrane was relatively unaffected by ROS despite high H2O2 content recorded under the salinity stress.Relatively higher superoxide dismutase activity along with a parallel increase in transcript level of superoxide dismutase(Os07g46990) in FL478 indicated that this protein might make a vital contribution to salt stress tolerance.Although the content of ascorbic acid remained unchanged in FL478,the activity of ascorbic peroxidases(APOXs) was reduced comparably in the both varieties.Transcriptomic data showed that a larger number of peroxidase genes were upregulated in FL478 compared to IR29 and several of which might provide engineering targets to improve rice salt tolerance. | Prasad SENADHEERA Shamala TIRIMANNE Frans J M MAATHUIS | 2012 | Rice science2012,19,1: | 3 |
| 3 | Anti-encystment and amoebicidal activity of Lonicera japonica Thunb. and its major constituent Chlorogenic acid in vitro显示文摘Objective:To examine the acanthamoebicidal effects of ethyl acetate,aqueous and butanol fractions of dried flower buds of Lonicera japonica(L.japonica) Thunb.(Flos Lonicerae) in vitro.Methods:Acanthamoeba triangularis isolates were obtained from environmental water samples and identified by PCR.They were exposed to ethyl acetate,water and butanol fractions of L.japonica Thunb.at concentrations ranging from 0.5 mg/m L to 1.5 mg/m L.The extracts were evaluated for growth inhibition at 24,48 and 72 h,respectively.Chlorogenic acid at a concentration of 1 mg/mL was examined for inhibition of encystment.Results:Ethyl acetate fraction at a concentration of 1.5 mg/mL evoked a significant reduction of trophozoite viability by 48.9% after 24 h,49.2% after 48 h and 33.7% after 72 h Chlorogenic acid,the major active constituent of L.japonica Thunb.at the concentration of 1 mg/mL reduced the cysts/trophozoite ratio by 100% after 24 h,84.0% after 48 h and 72.3% after 72 h.This phenolic compound at concentration of 1 mg/mL concurrent with 0.6% hydrogen peroxide inhibited hydrogen peroxide-induced encystment by 92.8% at 72 h.Conclusions:Results obtained from this study show that ethyl acetate fraction at 1.5 mg/m L is the most potent fraction of L.japonica Thunb.and its major constituent chlorogenic acid showed the remarkable inhibition of encystment at a concentration of 1 mg/mL. | Tooba Mahboob Abdul-Majid Azlan Tian-Chye Tan Chandramathi Samudi Shamala Devi Sekaran Veeranoot Nissapatorn Christophe Wiart | 2016 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2016,9,9: | 2 |
