| 2 | Narrow-band imaging endoscopy to assess mucosal angiogenesis in inflammatory bowel disease: A pilot study显示文摘AIM: To investigate whether narrow band imaging (NBI) is a useful tool for the in vivo detection of angiogenesis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. METHODS: Conventional and NBI colonoscopy was performed in 14 patients with colonic inflammation (8 ulcerative colitis and 6 Crohn’s disease). Biopsy samples were taken and CD31 expression was assayed immuno- histochemically; microvascular density was assessed by vessel count. RESULTS: In areas that were endoscopically normal but positive on NBI, there was a significant (P < 0.05) increase in angiogenesis (12 ± 1 vessels/field vs 18 ± 2 vessels/field) compared with areas negative on NBI. | 3 | Osmoprotectants and Antioxidative Enzymes as Screening Tools for Salinity Tolerance in Radish (Raphanus sativus)显示文摘The research addresses the identification of a screening methodology for salt stress tolerance in radish cultivars. In the first experiment, two different radish cultivars(long white and round red) were compared in their morphological and physiological responses to different salinity levels. Round red radish showed better morphological and physiological responses to incremental salinity in terms of yield and better adaptation of overall water relations. In the second experiment, the most tolerant genotype from the first experiment was used as a control against other seven round red radish genotypes ranked by their salinity tolerance according to morphological, physiological and biochemical indices. Salt stress did not significantly affect malondialdehyde(MDA) and hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) content, and ascorbate peroxidase(APX) activity in the studied cultivars. Nonetheless, the relatively salt tolerant cultivar SAXA2 showed higher ability to accumulate compatible solutes(e.g.proline and proteins) and maintain osmotic adjustment. In addition, cultivar SAXA2 also showed considerable increase in glutathione reductase(GR) activity. | 5 | Risk of postoperative recurrence and postoperative management of Crohn's disease显示文摘Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive tract with systemic manifestations. Etiology is unknown, even if immunological, genetic and environmental factors are involved. The majority of CD patients require surgery during their lifetime due to progressive bowel damage, but, even when all macroscopic lesions have been removed by surgery, the disease recurs in most cases. Postoperative management represents therefore a crucial mean for preventing recurrence. Several drugs and approaches have been proposed to achieve this aim. Endoscopic inspection of the ileocolic anastomosis within 1 year from surgery is widely encouraged, given that endoscopic recurrence is one of the greatest predictors for clinical recurrence. | 6 | Past,present and future of industrial plantation forestry and implication on future timber harvesting technology显示文摘Plantation forests are established,and expanding,to satisfy increasing global demand for timber products.Shifting societal values,such as safety,productivity,environmental,quality and social are influencing the plantation forestry sector.This is primarily driven through an ever increasing world population,which in turn influences the way nations view the value systems by which they live.More people require more resources-also forest products.Also,the availability of information is influencing the pace of technological development.These changes could result in a difference in the management of plantations that could affect the forest engineering systems of the future.This review aimed to summarize the current status of plantation forests;summarize future developments and possible scenarios in forest plantation management for the various products;and assess whether these developments in a plantation environment could affect the harvesting systems used.Factors influencing the form of plantations include the type and nature of the plantation owner;the change in demand for different and new forest products;climate change factors,including the use of biomass for energy,carbon sequestration and trading;ecosystem services and other products and services;and sustainability certification of forest management.The impact and influence of these factors were summarised into a series of key drivers that will influence the technology used in harvesting machines,as well as the choice of harvesting machines,systems and methods.These drivers were the effect of variations in tree size,the expansion of plantation areas onto more difficult terrain,diversity in plantation design,increased attention towards site impacts and the increased use of biomass for energy.Specific information is provided regarding how the harvesting systems could be affected. | Andrew McEwan Enrico Marchi Raffaele Spinelli Michal Brink | 2020 | Journal of Forestry Research2020,31,2: | 3 |
| 7 | Pathways of flower infection and pollen-mediated dispersion of Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae, the causal agent of kiwifruit bacterial canker显示文摘Flowers can provide a protected and nutrient-rich environment to the epiphytic microflora,thus representing a sensible entry point for pathogens such as Pseudomonas syringae pv.actinidiae(Psa).This bacterium can colonize both male and female Actinidia flowers,causing flower browning and fall,and systemic invasion of the host plant,eventually leading to its death.However,the process of flower colonization and penetration into the host tissues has not yet been fully elucidated.In addition,the presence of Psa in the pollen from infected flowers,and the role of pollination in the spread of Psa requires confirmation.The present study employed a Psa strain constitutively expressing the fluorescent GFPuv protein,to visualize in vivo flower colonization.Microscopy observations were performed by means of confocal laser scanning and wide-field fluorescent microscopy,and were coupled with the study of Psa population dynamics by quantitative PCR(q-PCR).The pathogen was shown to colonize stigmata,move along the stylar furrow,and penetrate the receptacles via the style or nectarhodes.Once the receptacle was invaded,the pathogen migrated along the flower pedicel and became systemic.Psa was also able to colonize the anthers epiphytically and endophytically.Infected male flowers produced contaminated pollen,which could transmit Psa to healthy plants.Finally,pollinators(Apis mellifera and Bombus terrestris)were studied in natural conditions,showing that,although they can be contaminated with Psa,the pathogen’s transmission via pollinators is contrasted by its short survival in the hive. | Irene Donati Antonio Cellini Giampaolo Buriani Sofia Mauri Callum Kay Gianni Tacconi Francesco Spinelli | 2018 | Horticulture Research2018,5,1: | 3 |
