3Developing and validating a nestling photographic aging guide for cavity-nesting birds: an example with the European Bee-eater(Merops apiaster)显示文摘Background: Accurate estimation of nestlings’ age is essential in avian demography studies as well as in population ecology and conservation. For example, it can be useful for synchronizing nest visits with events of particular interest, such as the age at which young can be safely ringed, or in choosing the best period to attain the most accurate calculation of laying or hatching dates. Methods: We constructed a photographic guide for aging European Bee-eaters(Merops apiaster) nestlings to 3-day age classes and evaluated the aging method by performing a validation exercise with several observers with no previous experience in aging bee-eater nestlings. Results: The aging guide for bee-eater nestlings allowed estimating age to within 3 days with an average accuracy of 0.85. We found the optimal period for aging nestlings was between days 13-18(with accuracy between 0.94 and 0.99), during which the status of feather development was more easily distinguishable from the preceding and subsequent age classes. During the first 3 days after hatching, nestlings could also be aged with high accuracy(0.93). The small size of the nestling in relation to the eggs and the nestling’s inability to raise its head during these first days allowed for good discrimination from the subsequent age class. Between days 25 and 28, nestlings were correctly aged in only half of assignments(0.55 sensitivity) and nestlings belonging to class 7(days 7-9) were the least correctly identified(0.38 sensitivity). However, by visiting the nests at 12 days intervals it is possible to achieve the highest accuracy in age estimation with the smallest disturbance and logistic investment. Conclusions: This study highlighted how indirect methods and a simple protocol can be established and employed to quickly estimate nestling age in cases where handling nestlings is challenging or impossible, while minimizing disturbance in and around the nest.Joana S.Costa Afonso D.Rocha Ricardo A.Correia Jose A.Alves 2020Avian Research2020,11,1:1
4Corporate Social Responsibility and Consumers’ Reaction: An Experiment显示文摘Companies differ in their motivation to corporate social responsibility(CSR)practices, with some companies taking a genuine, altruistic approach and others preferring an opportunistic approach(and attempting to mimic the former). If consumers can distinguish them, they will eventually reward the altruistic(being willing to pay more)and penalize the opportunistic ones. This paper performs an experimental study to assess whether differences in consumers’willingness to pay are statistically significant for different classifications of CSR activities:(i)proactive or reactive,(ii)environment, employees,or social,(iii)involving more or less expensive products,(iv)being performed by firms facing competition or not. Results show that consumers are willing to reward CSR initiatives that follow a reactive approach;consumers’decisions are more moderate when rewarding initiatives associated with more expensive products;the rewards provided depend on the CSR dimension;a relationship between market structure and consumers’reaction to CSR was not found.Adriana C.Ribeiro Margarida Catalão-Lopes Ana S.Costa 2022Journal of Sustainable Business and Economics2022,5,3:0
5Fern extracts potentiate fluconazole activity and inhibit morphological changes in Candida species显示文摘Objective: To investigate the antifungal activity of the fern species Lygodium venustum(L. venustum) and Pityrogramma calomelanos(P. calomelanos) against Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis strains. Methods: The microdilution method was used to evaluate the antifungal activity, as well as the modulating effects of ethanolic extracts of these plants in combination with fluconazole. The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC), minimum fungicide concentration and morphological changes were also determined. Results: The extract obtained from L. venustum presented a MIC > 8 192 mg/m L, while the extract obtained from and P. calomelanos presented a MIC = 8 192 mg/m L, indicating that they present weak antifungal activity. However, combination of the extracts with Fluconazole potentiated the antifungal activity of this drug. At different experimental conditions, such as concentration of the extract and type of strain, the extracts inhibited hyphae and pseudohyphae formation, indicating that these fern species can affect the morphology of the fungi. Conclusions: The extracts obtained from the fern species L. venustum and P. calomelanos dose not present significant antifungal activity. However, P. calomelanos potentiates the activity of fluconazole and both extracts inhibits the morphological changes in Candida species, indicating that they have potential pharmacological activity as modulators of fungal biology. Therefore, novel studies are required to characterize the interference of these extracts in the virulence and pathogenicity of Candida species as well as the potential of fern species to treat fungal infections.Maria A.Freitas Antonia T.L.Santos Antonio J.T.Machado Ana Raquel P.Silva Fábia F.Campina Maria S.Costa Gioconda M.A.B.Martins Maria Flaviana B.Morais-Braga Saulo R.Tintino Irwin R.A.Menezes Jaime Ribeiro-Filho Altevir P.Medeiros Adeliana S.Oliveira Patrício B.Maracajá Henrique D.M.Coutinho 2017Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2017,7,11:0
