Impact of built environment on physical activity and obesity among children and adolescents in China:A narrative systematic review显示文摘Background: Neighborhood built environment may profoundly influence children's physical activity(PA) and body weight. This study systematically reviewed scientific evidence regarding the impact of built environment on PA and obesity among children and adolescents in China. Methods: A keyword and reference search was conducted in Active Living Research, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Web of Science. Studies that met all of the following criteria were included in the review:(1) study designs—experimental studies, observational studies, and qualitative studies;(2) study subjects—Chinese children and/or adolescents aged 17 years;(3) exposures—neighborhood built environment;(4)outcomes—PA and/or body weight status;(5) article type—peer-reviewed publications;(6) time window of search—from the inception of an electronic bibliographic database to May 31, 2018;(7) country—China; and(8) language—articles written in English. Results: A total of 20 studies, including 16 cross-sectional studies, 3 longitudinal studies, and 1 descriptive study, met the predetermined selection criteria and were included in the review. A total of 13 studies adopted subjective built environment measures reported by parents and/or children, 2 adopted objective measures(e.g., geographical information system, field observations), and 5 adopted both objective and subjective measures. PA behaviors included PA, physical inactivity, sedentary behavior, active/passive commuting from/to school, and park visits. Among the 16 studies that provided some quantitative estimates of the influence of built environment on PA and body weight status, all reported a statistically significant relationship in the expected direction. Availability and accessibility in proximity to greenspaces, parks, recreational facilities, and sidewalks were found to be associated with increased PA levels, reduced sedentary behaviors, and/or active commuting among Chinese children and adolescents. In contrast, the absence of bike lanes and living in higher density residential areas were associated with increased likelihood of childhood overweight and obesity. Conclusion: Neighborhood built environment plays an important role in Chinese children's PA engagement and weight outcomes. Building new exercise facilities and enhancing the accessibility of existing facilities hold the potential to enhance PA engagement among Chinese children and adolescents. In addition, urban designs that incorporate sidewalks, bike lanes, walking paths, less motorized traffic, and lower residential density are likely to promote PA and prevent childhood obesity in China.Ruopeng An Jing Shen Qiuying Yang Yan Yang 2019Journal of Sport and Health Science2019,8,2:13
Projecting the impact of the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic on childhood obesity in the United States: A microsimulation model显示文摘Purpose:The coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19)pandemic in the United States led to nationwide stay-at-home orders and school closures.Declines in energy expenditure resulting from canceled physical education classes and reduced physical activity may elevate childhood obesity risk. This study estimated the impact of COVID-19 on childhood obesity. Methods:A microsimulation model simulated the trajectory of a nationally representative kindergarten cohort’s body mass index z-scores and childhood obesity prevalence from April 2020 to March 2021 under the control scenario without COVID-19 and under the 4 alternative scenarios with COVID-19—Scenario 1:2-month nationwide school closure in April and May 2020;Scenario 2:Scenario 1 followed by a 10%reduction in daily physical activity in the summer from June to August;Scenario 3:Scenario 2 followed by 2-month school closure in September and October;and Scenario 4:Scenario 3 followed by an additional 2-month school closure in November and December. Results:Relative to the control scenario without COVID-19,Scenarios 1,2,3,and 4 were associated with an increase in the mean body mass index z-scores by 0.056(95%confidence interval(95%CI):0.0550.056),0.084(95%CI:0.0840.085),0.141(95%CI:0.1400.142),and 0.198(95%CI:0.1970.199),respectively,and an increase in childhood obesity prevalence by 0.640(95%CI:0.5150.765),0.972(95%CI:0.8191.126),1.676(95%CI:1.4751.877),and 2.373(95%CI:2.1352.612)percentage points, respectively.Compared to girls and non-Hispanic whites and Asians, the impact of COVID-19 on childhood obesity was modestly larger among boys and non-Hispanic blacks and Hispanics, respectively. Conclusion:Public health interventions are urgently called to promote an active lifestyle and engagement in physical activity among children to mitigate the adverse impact of COVID-19 on unhealthy weight gains and childhood obesity.Ruopeng An 2020Journal of Sport and Health Science2020,9,4:4
Electrodeposition:Synthesis of advanced transition metal-based catalyst for hydrogen production via electrolysis of water显示文摘Developing lower-cost and higher-effective catalyst to support hydrogen(H_(2))production by electrochemical water-splitting has been recognized as a preferred strategy to drive the clean energy utilization. As a credible technology for the synthesis of functional materials, electrodeposition has attracted widespread attention, especially suitable for non-noble transition metal-based catalysts(TMCs).Recently, lots of researchers have been devoted to this hot research direction with plentiful achievements, however,a comprehensive review towards this area is still missing.Hence,we summarize the past research progress, presents the technical characteristics of electrodeposition from the viewpoint of fundamental theory and influence factors for the electrochemical deposition behavior, and introduce its application in various of TMCs with versatile nanostructures and compositions.Except a deeper and more comprehensive cognition of electrodeposition,we further discuss the catalyst’s optimized hydrogen evolution reaction(HER),oxygen evolution reaction(OER)performance as well as overall water splitting that combined with the synthetic process. Finally,we conclude the technical advantages towards electrodeposition, propose challenge and future research directions in this promising field. This timely review aims to promote a deeper understanding of effective catalysts obtained via electrodeposition strategy, and provide new guidance for the design and synthesis of future catalysts for hydrogen production.Ruopeng Li Yun Li Peixia Yang Dan Wang Hao Xu Bo Wang Fan Meng Jinqiu Zhang Maozhong An 2021Journal of Energy Chemistry2021,30,6:4
Synergistic Interfacial and Doping Engineering of Heterostructured NiCo(OH)_(x)-Co_(y)W as an Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalyst显示文摘To achieve high efficiency of water electrolysis to produce hydrogen(H_(2)),developing non-noble metal-based catalysts with consid-erable performance have been considered as a crucial strategy, which is correlated with both the interphase properties and multi-metal synergistic effects.Herein,as a proof of concept,a delicate NiCo(OH)_(x)-CoyW catalyst with a bush-like heterostructure was realized via gas-template-assisted electrodeposition, followed by an electrochemical etching-growth process, which ensured a high active area and fast gas release kinetics for a superior hydrogen evolution reaction, with an overpotential of 21 and 139 mV at 10 and 500 mA cm^(−2),respectively.Physical and electrochemical analyses demonstrated that the synergistic effect of the NiCo(OH)_(x)-Co_(y)W heteroge-neous interface resulted in favorable electron redistribution and faster electron transfer efficiency. The amorphous NiCo(OH)_(x) strengthened the water dissociation step, and metal phase of CoW provided sufficient sites for moderate H immediate adsorption/H_(2) desorption. In addition,NiCo(OH)_(x)-CoyW exhibited desirable urea oxidation reaction activity for matching H_(2) generation with a low voltage of 1.51 V at 50 mA cm^(−2).More importantly, the synthesis and testing of the NiCo(OH)_(x)-CoyW catalyst in this study were all solar-powered,sug-gesting a promising environmentally friendly process for practical applications.Ruopeng Li Hao Xu Peixia Yang Dan Wang Yun Li Lihui Xiao Xiangyu Lu Bo Wang Jinqiu Zhang Maozhong An 2021Nano-Micro Letters2021,13,8:1
Engagement in outdoor physical activity under ambient fine particulate matter pollution: A risk-benefit analysis显示文摘Background:Outdoor physical activity(PA)brings important health benefits, but exposure to polluted air increases health risks. This study aimed to quantify the tradeoff of PA under fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5))air pollution by estimating the optimal PA duration under various pollution levels. Methods:A risk-benefit analysis was performed to estimate the optimal outdoor moderate-intensity PA(MPA)duration under varying PM_(2.5) concentrations. Results:An inverse nonlinear relationship was identified between optimal MPA duration and background PM_(2.5) concentration levels. When background PM_(2.5) concentration increased to 186 μg/m^(3),the optimal outdoor MPA duration decreased to 2.5 h/week,the minimum level recommended by current PA guidelines. When background PM_(2.5) concentration further increased to 235 μg/m^(3),the optimal outdoor MPA duration decreased to 1 h/week.The relationship between optimal MPA duration and background PM_(2.5) concentration levels was stronger when exercising at a location closer to a source of air pollution.Compared to the general adult population, adults aged 60 years and older had substantially steeper curves—the optimal outdoor MPA duration decreased to 2.5 h/week when background PM_(2.5) concentration reached 45 μg/m^(3).Conclusion:The health benefit of outdoor MPA by far outweighs the health risk of PM_(2.5) pollution for the global average urban background concentration(22 μg/m^(3),).This modeling study examined a single type of air pollutant and suffered from measurement errors and estimation uncertainties.Future research should examine other air pollutants and indoor PA,incorporate short-and mid-term health effects of MPA and air pollution into the risk-benefit analysis, and provide estimates specific for high-risk subgroups.Ruopeng An Hyojung Kang Lianzhong Cao Xiaoling Xiang 2022Journal of Sport and Health Science2022,11,4:1
Build neural network models to identify and correct news headlines exaggerating obesity-related scientific findings显示文摘Purpose:Media exaggerations of health research may confuse readers’understanding, erode public trust in science and medicine, and cause disease mismanagement. This study built artificial intelligence(AI)models to automatically identify and correct news headlines exaggerating obesity-related research findings.Design/methodology/approach:We searched popular digital media outlets to collect 523 headlines exaggerating obesity-related research findings. The reasons for exaggerations include:inferring causality from observational studies, inferring human outcomes from animal research, inferring distant/end outcomes(e.g.,obesity)from immediate/intermediate outcomes(e.g.,calorie intake),and generalizing findings to the population from a subgroup or convenience sample. Each headline was paired with the title and abstract of the peer-reviewed journal publication covered by the news article. We drafted an exaggeration-free counterpart for each original headline and fined-tuned a BERT model to differentiate between them.We further fine-tuned three generative language models-BART,PEGASUS,and T5 to autogenerate exaggeration-free headlines based on a journal publication’s title and abstract.Model performance was evaluated using the ROUGE metrics by comparing model-generated headlines with journal publication titles.Findings:The fine-tuned BERT model achieved 92.5%accuracy in differentiating between exaggeration-free and original headlines.Baseline ROUGE scores averaged 0.311 for ROUGE-1,0.113 for ROUGE-2,0.253 for ROUGE-L,and 0.253 ROUGE-Lsum.PEGASUS,T5,and BART all outperformed the baseline. The best-performing BART model attained 0.447 for ROUGE-1,0.221 for ROUGE-2,0.402 for ROUGE-L,and 0.402 for ROUGE-Lsum.Originality/value:This study demonstrated the feasibility of leveraging AI to automatically identify and correct news headlines exaggerating obesity-related research findings.Ruopeng An Quinlan Batcheller Junjie Wang Yuyi Yang 2023Journal of Data and Information Science2023,8,3:0
Policy and physical activity显示文摘Globally, physical inactivity is the 4th leading risk factor for mortality, following high blood pressure, tobacco use,and high blood glucose.1 The benefits of physical activity(PA)in improving physical and psychosocial health have been well-documented.2 However,one-third of adults and fourfifths of adolescents worldwide do not meet the minimum recommendations for PA,which imposes an immense burden on the health care system, given that 10%of all deaths from non-communicable diseases can be attributed to physical inactivity.Ruopeng An 2021Journal of Sport and Health Science2021,10,3:0
State laws governing school physical education in relation to attendance and physical activity among students in the USA: A systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Background:This study systematically synthesized and quantified the relationship linking state laws governing school physical education(PE)to PE attendance and physical activity(PA)in class and throughout the day and week among students in the USA.Methods:A keyword search was performed in PubMed,Web of Science,Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature(CINAHL),Academic Search Complete, and EconLit.Meta-analyses were performed to estimate the effects of state PE laws. Results:A total of 17 studies were included in the review, and five contributed to the meta-analyses.A total of 8 studies used nationally representative school-or student-level data, three focused on multiple states, and the remaining six examined the PE laws of a single state. The presence and strength of state PE laws were positively associated with PE attendance and the frequency and duration of PA during PE classes and throughout the school day.Compared to those residing in states with weak or no PE laws, students in states with strong PE laws had an additional 0.2 days(95%confidence interval(95%CI):0.10.4)of PE attendance per week and spent an additional 33.9 min(95%CI:22.745.0)participating PE classes per week.State PE laws affected girls’PA more than boys’.Different aspects of state PE laws tended to affect students’PE attendance differently.Disparities in the implementation of state PE laws existed across schools. Conclusion:Future studies should adopt objective measures on PE and PA participation and examine the roles schools and districts play in mediating the effect of state PE laws on students’PE attendance and PA.Ruopeng An Jianxiu Liu Ruidong Liu 2021Journal of Sport and Health Science2021,10,3:0
