14Adaptation of Industrial Organisations to the Environment Grounded in Evolutionary Models显示文摘Yes, we perceive that the environment in which comp an ies operate, is changing at higher speeds then before. Globalisation, higher inn ovation rates, customisation, more intense competition, technological developmen ts account for these changes effecting the way industrial companies operate and eventually their structures and processes. Companies have to adapt themselves to these changes. The question arose whether the approach of the Section Industria l Organisation and Management that it has practised for redesign of processes an d organisational structures also withholds in this era of continuous change. Sec ondly, firms are also looking for contingencies in processes and structures to i mprove their chances for survival. These two questions into the processes and st ructures within the firm that it needs to support adaptation to the ever-changi ng environment direct this research. Industrial companies will have to increase to their Complexity Handling Capabili ty, the ability to cope with changes in its environment and imposed complexity p ouring in from the environment. To do so, they might decrease their internal com plexity through redefining their organisations and product structure. The effect of these measurements seems limited; more might be won by learning to increase its base of capabilities. The increase of capabilities holds parallels to the de velopment of species in biology and paleontology for which two models exist: the punctuated equilibrium and the phyletic gradualism. The punctuated equilibr ium supposes that periods of turmoil are interchanged by periods of fermentation giving rise to new variants and products (for companies). The phyletic graduali sm relies on the development of characteristics in species that are initially ha rd to detect but will lead at the end to new species. Whatever might be true for biology and palaeontology, these two models appear as a possibility for cla ssifying the theories of organisational change. Also, these theories put forward insights in the development of organisations that stretch beyond the classical insights on the adaptation of organisations based on one-time interventions ass uming balance between demands from the environment and internal structure. Little research has been done so far in this field of adaptation of companies to the dynamics of the environment. Most literature does not address the internal processes and structures necessary for coping with change. This paper will prese nt initial findings of case studies of graduation theses that took place to generate data on the validity of the evolutionary models. This way the research should not only lead to a theoretical framework but also to practical implicatio ns for industrial companies.Rob Dekkers Eveline van de Boogaard Naima el-Bouzidi Hil de Skraastad 2002厦门大学学报(自然科学版)2002,41,S1:0
15Organelle Structures: Bridging Strategy and Technological Processes显示文摘The shifting requirements as imposed on operations ma nagement require adjusting and tailoring the organisational structure to meet ma rket demands. However, translating these requirements directly into hierarchical structure will not ensure the integration of processes across organisational un its and guarantee desirable performance. Therefore, management and management li terature wonders: · How should we connect processes to the external environment within a strategi c framework · Which organisational structures do meet performance requirements · Which choices and freedom do we have within organisational structures · How and when do we implement organisational structures That the hierarchical structure does not meet as such the performance requiremen ts nor did it relate to these became already clear during case studies performed in the ’70s. The conclusion was drawn that organisational changes should affect working processes before they proof to be viable. This required the development of new approach through empirical studies and base d on literature. This led to the development of the organelle structure. The org anelle structure should connect to the strategy and the product flow. Thereto, a decision model has been developed for revealing these relations and the practic al implication. During a number of case studies this methodology has been refined and includes t he strategic choice between variants for the organelle structure with their own performance capabilities; we distinguish about 20 variants ranging between the f unctional organisation and the product flow organisation. These ranges of choice s however can be connected to different order entry points, stemming from logist ic concepts. This extends the performance to improved lead-times and improved c ontrol. Strategic choices relate the organelle structure to external performance criteria dictated by product/market-combinations: · lead-time · quality · costs and internal choices for performance criteria: · flexibility · productivity · resource utilisation · innovative performance. Case studies reveal the drastic improvements of the performance of operations an d manufacturing. The paper will discuss a few of these implementations to demons trate the impact. They also show how one derives the hierarchical structure from the choice for the organelle structure. Organelle structures do bridge the link of an industrial company to its environm ent and the internal possibilities, dictated by characteristics of product flow and process execution. The link to the environment results in a strategic framew ork for assessment of alternatives and possibilities. Choices for organelle stru ctures depend strongly on choices on the order entry points of the hardware flow and the specification flow. The evaluation of the characteristics takes place a gainst the strategic framework ensuring competitive advantage as well as a high probability of factual implementation and performance improvement.Rob Dekkers 2002厦门大学学报(自然科学版)2002,41,S1:0
16Management and Control of Outsourcing in Dispersed Network Manufacturing Systems显示文摘The trend of economic globalisation and advances in i nformation technology has led to the emergence of dispersed manufacturing system s as a form of the virtual organisation. New manufacturing strategy pays more at tention to the management of the total value chain and therefore puts emphasis o n outsourcing. In fact, outsourcing is an efficient way of utilizing available r esources and has become one key aspect of the manufacturing strategy. Improved d ecision and organization on outsourcing will result in cost production and short er lead-times. However, most concepts and practice of traditional outsourcing do not adapt to t he changing environment and meet increasing performance requirements. On the oth er hand, virtual organisations might display instability between pure outsourcin g and establishing alliance. Balance and trade-off between independent agents a nd creating alliance are thus required. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to develop a model to support decision-making, management and control on outsou rcing in a dispersed network manufacturing system and to discuss several key iss ues that are relevant to the relationship between the agents of the network. Dev elopment of the model will deploy Applied System Theory and will be built on fou ndations of earlier research on industrial management such the theories of Outso urcing, Order Entry Points, Design of Organisations and Logistic Control. The is sues that will be addressed in this paper are: · The selection of suppliers and co-makers; · Communication between suppliers and clients; · The mechanisms for profit-sharing between agents; · The product data management to integrate the knowledge of the different agent s into product design. Industrial companies will benefit from this research by the practical methods an d implementation extending their business models beyond concepts for outsourcing and alliances. Additionally, the exploration will lead to proactive contributio n of manufacturing during engineering, which would improve management and contro l of dispersed manufacturing systems.Rob Dekkers Luping Wang 2002厦门大学学报(自然科学版)2002,41,S1:0
