| 1 | Alginate and alginate composites for biomedical applications显示文摘Alginate is an edible heteropolysaccharide that abundantly available in the brown seaweed and the capsule of bacteria such as Azotobacter sp.and Pseudomonas sp.Owing to alginate gel forming capability,it is widely used in food,textile and paper industries;and to a lesser extent in biomedical applications as biomaterial to promote wound healing and tissue regeneration.This is evident from the rising use of alginate-based dressing for heavily exuding wound and their mass availability in the market nowadays.However,alginate also has limitation.When in contact with physiological environment,alginate could gelate into softer structure,consequently limits its potential in the soft tissue regeneration and becomes inappropriate for the usage related to load bearing body parts.To cater this problem,wide range of materials have been added to alginate structure,producing sturdy composite materials.For instance,the incorporation of adhesive peptide and natural polymer or synthetic polymer to alginate moieties creates an improved composite material,which not only possesses better mechanical properties compared to native alginate,but also grants additional healing capability and promote better tissue regeneration.In addition,drug release kinetic and cell viability can be further improved when alginate composite is used as encapsulating agent.In this review,preparation of alginate and alginate composite in various forms(fibre,bead,hydrogel,and 3D-printed matrices)used for biomedical application is described first,followed by the discussion of latest trend related to alginate composite utilization in wound dressing,drug delivery,and tissue engineering applications. | Raha Ahmad Raus Wan Mohd Fazli Wan Nawawi Ricca Rahman Nasaruddin | 2021 | Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences2021,16,3: | 11 |

| 3 | Childhood stressful events, HPA axis and anxiety disorders显示文摘Anxiety disorders are among the most common of all mental disorders and their pathogenesis is a major topic in psychiatry, both for prevention and treatment. Early stressful life events and alterations of hypothalamic pituitary adrenal(HPA) axis function seem to have a significant role in the onset of anxiety. Existing data appear to support the mediating effect of the HPA axis between childhood traumata and posttraumatic stress disorder. Findings on the HPA axis activity at baseline and after stimuli in panic disordered patients are inconclusive, even if stressful life events may have a triggering function in the development of this disorder. Data on the relationship between stress, HPA axis functioning and obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD) are scarce and discordant, but an increased activity of the HPA axis is reported in OCD patients. Moreover, normal basal cortisol levels and hyperresponsiveness of the adrenal cortex during a psychosocial stressor are observed in social phobics. Finally,abnormal HPA axis activity has also been observed in generalized anxiety disordered patients. While several hypothesis have attempted to explain these findings over time, currently the most widely accepted theory is that early stressful life events may provoke alterations of the stress response and thus of the HPA axis, that can endure during adulthood, predisposing individuals to develop psychopathology. | 5 | Adiponectin affects the mechanical responses in strips from the mouse gastric fundus显示文摘AIM To investigate whether the adipocytes derived hormone adiponectin(ADPN) affects the mechanical responses in strips from the mouse gastric fundus. METHODS For functional experiments, gastric strips from the fundal region were cut in the direction of the longitudinal muscle layer and placed in organ baths containing KrebsHenseleit solution. Mechanical responses were recorded via force-displacement transducers, which were coupled to a polygraph for continuous recording of isometric tension. Electrical field stimulation(EFS) was applied via two platinum wire rings through which the preparation was threaded. The effects of ADPN were investigated on the neurally-induced contractile and relaxant responses elicited by EFS. The expression of ADPN receptors, Adipo-R1 and Adipo-R2, was also evaluated by touchdown-PCR analysis. RESULTS In the functional experiments, EFS(4-16 Hz) elicited tetrodotoxin(TTX)-sensitive contractile responses. Addition of ADPN to the bath medium caused a reduction in amplitude of the neurally-induced contractile responses(P < 0.05). The effects of ADPN were no longer observed in the presence of the nitric oxide(NO) synthesis inhibitor L-NG-nitro arginine(L-NNA)(P > 0.05). The direct smooth muscle response to methacholine was not influenced by ADPN(P > 0.05). In carbachol precontracted strips and in the presence of guanethidine, EFS induced relaxant responses. Addition of ADPN to the bath medium, other than causing a slight and progressive decay of the basal tension, increased the amplitude of the neurally-induced relaxant responses(P < 0.05).
