| 2 | Numerical analysis of surface subsidence in asymmetric parallel highway tunnels显示文摘Tunnelling related hazards are very common in the Himalayan terrain and a number of such instances have been reported. Several twin tunnels are being planned for transportation purposes which will require good understanding for prediction of tunnel deformation and surface settlement during the engineering life of the structure. The deformational behaviour, design of sequential excavation and support of any jointed rock mass are challenging during underground construction. We have raised several commonly assumed issues while performing stability analysis of underground opening at shallow depth. For this purpose, Kainchi-mod Nerchowck twin tunnels(Himachal Pradesh, India) are taken for in-depth analysis of the stability of two asymmetric tunnels to address the influence of topography, twin tunnel dimension and geometry. The host rock encountered during excavation is composed mainly of moderately to highly jointed grey sandstone, maroon sandstone and siltstones. In contrast to equidimensional tunnels where the maximum subsidence is observed vertically above the centreline of the tunnel, the result from the present study shows shifting of the maximum subsidence away from the tunnel centreline. The maximum subsidence of 0.99 mm is observed at 4.54 m left to the escape tunnel centreline whereas the maximum subsidence of 3.14 mm is observed at 8.89 m right to the main tunnel centreline. | 4 | Diarylheptanoid-myricanone isolated from ethanolic extract of Myrica cerifera shows anticancer effects on HeLa and PC3 cell lines:signalling pathway and drug-DNA interaction显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To test if myricanone(C_(21)H_(24)O_5),a cyclic diarylheptanoid,has anticancer effects on two different cancer cell lines HeLa and PC3.The present study was conducted with a note on the drug-DNA interaction and apoptotic signalling pathway.METHODS:Several studies like cytotoxicity,nuclear damage,annexin-V-fluorescein isothiocyanate(FITC)/propidium iodide(Pl)-labelled apoptotic assay and cell cycle arrest,immunoblot and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)were used following standard protocols.Circular dichroism(CD)spectroscopy was also done to evaluate whether myricanone effectively interacted with DNA to bring about conformational changes that could strongly inhibit the cancer cell proliferation.RESULTS:Myricanone showed a greater cytotoxic effect on PC3 cells than on HeLa cells.Myricanone promoted G_0/G_1 arrest in HeLa cells and S phase arrest in PC3 cells.Nuclear condensation and annexin V-FITC/PI studies revealed that myricanone promoted apoptotic cell death.CD spectroscopic data indicated that myricanone had an interaction with calf thymus DNA that changed DNA structural conformation.RT-PCR and immunoblot studies revealed that myricanone activated the apoptotic signalling cascades through down-regulation of transcription factors like nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)(p65),and signal transducers and activators of transcription 3(STAT3);cell cycle regulators like cyclin D1,and survivin and other signal proteins like Bcl-2 and up-regulation of Bax,caspase-9 and caspase-3.CONCLUSION:Myricanone induced apoptosis in both types of cancer cells by triggering caspase activation,and suppression of cell proliferation by down-regulation of NF-κB and STAT3signalling cascades,which makes it a suitable candidate for possible use in the formulation of therapeutic agent for combating cancer. | Avijit Paul Sreemanti Das Jayeeta Das Asmita Samadder Kausik Bishayee Ratan Sadhukhan Anisur Rahman Khuda-Bukhsh | 2013 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2013,11,6: | 4 |
| 5 | Role of Joshi's external stabilization system with percutaneous screw fixation in high-energy tibial condylar fractures associated with severe soft tissue injuries显示文摘Purpose: The treatment of high-energy tibial condylar fractures which are associated with severe soft tissue injuries remains contentious and challenging. In this study, we assessed the results of Joshi's external stabilization system (JESS) by using the principle of ligamentotaxis and percutaneous screw fixation for managing high-energy tibial condylar fractures associated with severe soft tissue injuries. Methods: Between June 2008 and June 2010, 25 consecutive patients who were 17-71 years (mean, 39.7), underwent the JESS fixation for high-energy tibial condylar fractures associated with severe soft tissue injuries. Out of 25 patients, 2 were lost during follow-up and in 1 case early removal of frame was done, leaving 22 cases for final follow-up. Among them, 11 had poor skin condition with abrasions and blisters and 2 were open injuries (Gustilo-Anderson grade I & 11). The injury mechanisms were motor vehicle accidents (n - 19), fall from a height (n = 2) and assault (n - 1). The fractures were classified according to Schatzker classification system. Results: There were 7 type-V, 14 type-Vl and 1 type-IV Schatzker's tibial plateau fractures. The average interval between the injury and surgery was 6.8 days (range 2-13). The average hospital stay was 13 days (range, 7-22). The average interval between the surgery and full weight bearing was 13.6 weeks (range 11-20). The average range of knee flexion was 121° (range 105°-135°). The normal extension of the knee was observed in 20 patients, and an extensor lag of 5°-8° was noted in 2 patients. The complications included superficial pin tract infections (n 4) with no knee stiffness. Conclusion: JESS with lag screw fixation combines the benefit of traction, external fixation, and limited internal fixation, at the same time as allowing the ease of access to the soft tissue for wound checks, pin care, dressing changes, measurement of compartment pressure, and the monitoring of the neurovascular status. | 7 | Soil and water conservation measures improve soil carbon sequestration and soil quality under cashews显示文摘Land degradation is becoming a serious problem in the west coast region of India where one of the world's eight biodiversity hotspots,the‘Western Ghats’,is present.Poor land management practices and high rainfall have led to increasing problems associated with land degradation.A long-term(13-year)experiment was done to evaluate the impact of soil and water conservation measures on soil carbon sequestration and soil quality at three different depths under cashew nut cultivation on a 19%slope.Five soil and water conservation measures-continuous contour trenches,staggered contour trenches,halfmoon terraces,semi-elliptical trenches,and graded trenches all with vegetative barriers of Stylosanthes scabra and Vetiveria zizanoides and control were evaluated for their influence on soil properties,carbon sequestration,and soil quality under cashews.The soil and water conservation measures improved significantly the soil organic carbon,soil organic carbon stock,carbon sequestration rate and microbial activity compared to the control condition(without any measures).Among the measures tested,continuous contour trenches with vegetative barriers outperformed the others with respect to soil organic carbon stock,sequestration rate,and microbial activity.The lower metabolic quotient with the measures compared to the control indicated alleviation of environmental stress on microbes.Using principal component analysis and a correlation matrix,a minimum dataset was identified as the soil available nitrogen,bulk density,basal soil respiration,soil pH,acid phosphatase activity,and soil available boron and these were the most important soil properties controlling the soil quality.Four soil quality indices using two summation methods(additive and weighted)and two scoring methods(linear and non-linear)were developed using the minimum dataset.A linear weighted soil quality index was able to statistically differentiate the effect of soil and water conservation measures from that of the control.The highest value of the soil quality index of 0.98 was achieved with continuous contour trenches with a vegetative barrier.The results of the study indicate that soil and water conservation measures for cashews are a potential strategy to improve the soil carbon sequestration and soil quality along with improving crop productivity and reducing the erosion losses. | Gopal Ramdas Mahajan Bappa Das Sandrasekaran Manivannan Begur Lakshminarasimha Manjunath Ram Ratan Verma Sujeet Desai Rahul Mukund Kulkarni Ashish Marotrao Latare Reshma Sale Dayesh Murgaonkar Kiran Puna Patel Shaiesh Morajkar Ashwini Desai Natasha Barnes Heena Mulla | 2021 | International Journal of Sediment Research2021,36,2: | 4 |
| 8 | Comprehensive screening for reg1α gene rules out association with tropical calcific pancreatitis显示文摘AIM: To investigate the allelic and haplotypic association of reg1α gene with tropical calcific pancreatitis (TCP). Since TCP is known to have a variable genetic basis, we investigated the interaction between mutations in the susceptibility genes, SPINK1 and CTSB with reg1α polymorphisms. METHODS: We analyzed the polymorphisms in the reg1α gene by sequencing the gene including its promoter region in 195 TCP patients and 150 ethnically matched controls, compared their allele and haplotype frequencies, and their association with the pathogenesis and pancreaticolithiasis in TCP and fibro-calculous pancreatic diabetes. RESULTS: We found 8 reported and 2 novel polymo-rphisms including an insertion-deletion polymorphism in the promoter region of reg1α. None of the 5' UTR variants altered any known transcription factor binding sites, neither did any show a statistically significant association with TCP. No association with any reg1α variants was observed on dichotomization of patients based on their N34S SPINK1 or L26V CTSB status. | 9 | Synergism of co-delivered nanosized antioxidants displayed enhanced anticancer efficacy in human colon cancer cell lines显示文摘Combination of chemopreventive and/or therapeutic agents is the imminent smart approach to cope upwith cancer because it may act on multiple targets through different pathways. In the present study, wehave synthesized multiple chemopreventive and/or therapeutic agents (Curcumin, Quercetin andAspirin) loaded nanoparticles by simple cation-anion interaction among the amine groups of chitosan(CS) and phosphate groups of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP). These nanosized bioactive materials(CS-SHMP-CQA-NPs) were well characterized and found most effective in colon cancer cell line (HCT-116)compared to other cancer cell lines. Triplex chemopreventive and/or therapeutic agents-loaded NPs weresynergistically inducing apoptosis in HCT-116 cells compared to two-chemopreventive agents-loadedNPs as evident by an increase in sub-G1 cells (percent), and chromatin condensation along with thedecrease in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). Interestingly, ChoueTalalay analysis revealedthat CS-SHMP-CQA-NPs showed strong synergistic effect in its all doses. | 10 | Effect of rock bolt support mechanism on tunnel deformation in jointed rockmass: A numerical approach显示文摘A parametric study was conducted to determine the influence of different bolt parameters(bolt length and diameter)on the maximum induced boundary displacements in jointed rockmass,using a numerical method based on finite element code.Three different types of jointed systems(Type A,Type B,and Type C)were considered and analyzed.Type A displays normal joint closure,Type B demonstrates a combination of normal and shear joint closure,and in Type C,the majority of the joint is loaded in shear condition.The ground surface settlement profiles for these three joint systems,under unsupported conditions,are presented in this work.For the same rockmass properties,the cases in Type A and Type B exhibit the maximum and minimum settlement,respectively.For each joint type,the effect of variable bolt parameters on the tunnel boundary is studied in terms of the total displacement.The simulation results confirm that an increase in the bolt length does not significantly reduce the boundary displacement,whereas an increase in the bolt diameter substantially reduces the tunnel boundary displacement. | Ratan Das Trilok Nath Singh | 2021 | Underground Space2021,6,4: | 2 |

Although rare, both these conditions contribute to several deleterious anatomical changes at the cervicomedullary junction and thus predispose to acute hydrocephalus. Although our patient was initially asymptomatic, hydrocephalus ensued several weeks after birth and required cerebral spinal fluid diversion.
