| 1 | Traditional and modern aspects of hemorrhoid treatment in Iran:a review显示文摘Hemorrhoidal disease is a prevalent anorectal condition which is generally not managed well with current pharmacologic interventions. However, in Iranian traditional medicine(ITM) there are numerous plants with hemorrhoid-healing properties. The present research assembled plants with hemorrhoidhealing properties in ITM; their related pharmacological effects, phytochemical constituents and mechanisms of action in the modern medicine were also gathered. For this purpose, leading ITM textbooks were searched for plants with hemorrhoid-healing effects. Further, in vitro, in vivo and clinical studies on the most cited species were considered using scientific databases. Studying ITM textbooks revealed37 medicinal plants with hemorrhoid-healing effects. Among the mentioned herbal medicines, six species, including Allium ampeloprasum, Phyllanthus emblica, Aloe vera, Terminalia chebula, Vitis vinifera and Commiphora mukul, had the largest number of related pharmacological effects documented in scientific databases. | 2 | Efficacy of a traditional Persian medicine preparation for radiation-induced xerostomia:a randomized,open-label,active-controlled trial显示文摘BACKGROUND: Xerostomia is one of the most common side effects of radiation therapy among patients with head and neck cancers(HNC). However, conventional medicine lacks an effective treatment for radiation-induced xerostomia.OBJECTIVE: Synthesizing the traditional use of Alcea digitata and Malva sylvestris with their known beneficial effects from recent studies, we evaluated the efficacy of the herbs in the quality of life(QOL) of HNC patients with radiation-induced xerostomia.DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS: This study is a randomized, double-arm, open-label active-controlled clinical trial. We evaluated the effect of A. digitata and M. sylvestris on QOL of HNC patients with radiation-induced xerostomia compared with Hypozalix(artificial saliva). Patients were enrolled from the Imam Hossein Hospital's oncology clinic in Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary outcome measures in this trial were changes in patients' QOL assessed by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire, Head and Neck Module(EORTC QLQ-H&N 35).RESULTS: Between-group analysis showed that the intervention group patients obtained significantly lower(better) total EORTC QLQ-H&N 35 scores as compared to the control group at the end of the intervention period(P = 0.007). | 3 | Protective effects of honey compound syrup on busulfan-induced azoospermia in male rats显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the protective effects of honey compound syrup on sperm count and testis tissue in rats.Methods:Thirty rats were randomly assigned to five groups.The control group received 1 mL normal saline with dimethyl sulfoxide intraperitoneally;the busulfan group received busulfan 10 mg/kg body weight at the first and twenty-first days of the experiment via intraperitoneal injection;the last three groups received busulfan 10 mg/kg body weight to induce azoospermia,and then received 1.0,1.5,or 2.0 mg/kg honey compound syrup,respectively,after induction of azoospermia.After administration,the testis and epididymis of all rats were removed.Then,reproductive organ weight and sperm parameters(sperm concentration,epididymal sperm reserve and daily sperm production)were measured.After hematoxylin-eosin staining,seminiferous tubule cells and diameters were assessed.Results:Busulfan damaged the testis tissue and impaired spermatogenesis.Administration of honey compound syrup in three doses improved testis tissue and spermatogenesis.The protective effects of honey compound syrup may relate to the antioxidant properties of honey and other compounds in this syrup.Conclusions:Administration of honey compound syrup could be an ameliorative agent for the side effects of chemotherapy drugs such as busulfan on the male reproductive system. | Seyyed Shamsadin Athari Keivan Lorian Haniye Kashafroodi Saadat Ghafarzadeh Rasool Choopani | 2021 | Asian pacific Journal of Reproduction2021,10,6: | 0 |
| 4 | The role of selected medicinal plants from Iranian traditional medicine for the treatment of fatigue in metabolic syndrome显示文摘Background:Fatigue is a symptom of metabolic disorders such as metabolic syndrome,which is currently increasing in the world.There is no specific medication for fatigue,but in many cases,such as in metabolic disorders,it can be relieved by treating the underlying causes.Oxidative stress and inflammation are associated with fatigue and metabolic syndrome.Other mechanisms in metabolic syndrome are also involved in causing fatigue.Objective:The aim of this study was to investigate the role of selected medicinal plants from Iranian traditional medicine(ITM)in improving fatigue in patients with metabolic syndrome.Methods:ITM is one of the most ancient systems of medicine.In this article,we first explained fatigue,its types,and treatment from the perspective of ITM and then introduced a list of medicinal plants used in ITM to treat fatigue.Next,we reviewed the biological effects of these plants effective in treating the manifestations of the metabolic syndrome based on a search of electronic databases.Results:They have antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,and anti-diabetic activities.Among them,Matricaria chamomilla L.,Laurus nobilis L.,Origanum majorana L.,Vitex agnus-castus L.,Lawsonia inermis L.,Anethum graveolens L.,and Pistacia terebinthus L.improve the lipid profile and reduce dyslipidemia.Also,the antihypertensive effects of Matricaria chamomilla,Laurus nobilis,and Origanum majorana have been proven.Conclusion:These plants prevent fatigue and disease progression by countering oxidative stress and inflammation and affecting the properties of the metabolic syndrome. | Akram Alembagheri Homa Hajimehdipoor Rasool Choopani Somayeh Esmaeili | 2023 | Traditional Medicine Research2023,8,4: | 0 |
