1Role of dietary polyphenols in the management of peptic ulcer显示文摘Peptic ulcer disease is a multifactorial and complex disease involving gastric and duodenal ulcers.Despite medical advances,the management of peptic ulcer and its complications remains a challenge,with high morbidity and death rates for the disease.An accumulating body of evidence suggests that,among a broad reach of natural molecules,dietary polyphenols with multiple biological mechanisms of action play a pivotal part in the management of gastric and duodenal ulcers.The current review confirmed that dietary polyphenols possess protective and therapeutic potential in peptic ulcer mediated by:improving cytoprotection,re-epithelialization,neovascularization,and angiogenesis; up-regulating tissue growth factors and prostaglandins; down-regulating anti-angiogenic factors; enhancing endothelial nitric oxide synthasederived NO; suppressing oxidative mucosal damage; amplifying antioxidant performance,antacid,and antisecretory activity; increasing endogenous mucosal defensive agents; and blocking Helicobacter pylori colonization associated gastric morphological changes and gastroduodenal inflammation and ulceration.In addition,anti-inflammatory activity due to downregulation of proinflammatory cytokines and cellular and int e r c e llular adhe s ion age nt s,s uppr e s s ing leukocyte-endothelium interaction,inhibiting nuclear signaling pathways of inflammatory process,and modulating intracellular transduction and transcription pathways have key roles in the anti-ulcer action of dietary polyphenols.In conclusion,administration of a significant amount of dietary polyphenols in the human diet or as part of dietary supplementation along with conventional treatment can result in perfect security and treatment of peptic ulcer.Further welldesigned preclinical and clinical tests are recommended in order to recognize higher levels of evidence for the confirmation of bioefficacy and safety of dietary polyphenols in the management of peptic ulcer.Mohammad Hosein Farzaei Mohammad Abdollahi Roja Rahimi 2015World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,21:34
2Effi cacy of tricyclic antidepressants in irritable bowel syndrome:A meta-analysis显示文摘We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of tricyclic antidepressants(TCAs) as a therapeutic option for irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) through meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.For the years 1966 until September 2008,PubMed,Scopus,Web of Science,and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for double-blind,placebo-controlled trials investigating the effi cacy of TCAs in the management of IBS.Seven randomized,placebo-controlled clinical trials met our criteria and were included in the metaanalysis.TCAs used in the treatment arm of these trials included amitriptyline,imipramine,desipramine,doxepin and trimipramine.The pooled relative risk for clinical improvement with TCA therapy was 1.93(95% CI:1.44 to 2.6,P<0.0001).Effect size of TCAs versus placebo for mean change in abdominal pain score among the two studies was -44.15(95% CI:-53.27 to -35.04,P<0.0001).It is concluded that low dose TCAs exhibit clinically and statistically signifi cant control of IBS symptoms.Roja Rahimi Shekoufeh Nikfar Ali Rezaie Mohammad Abdollahi 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,13:22
3Herbal medicines for the management of irritable bowelsyndrome:A comprehensive review显示文摘Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gut disorder with high prevalence.Because of various factors involved in its pathophysiology and disappointing results from conventional IBS medications,the treatment of IBS is challenging and use of complementary and alternative medicines especially herbal therapies is increasing.In this paper,electronic databases including PubMed,Scopus,and Cochrane library were searched to obtain any in vitro,in vivo or human studies evaluating single or compound herbal preparations in the management of IBS.One in vitro,3 in vivo and 23 human studies were included and systematically reviewed.The majority of studies are about essential oil of Menta piperita as a single preparation and STW 5 as a compound preparation.Some evaluated herbs such as Curcuma xanthorriza and Fumaria officinalis did not demonstrate any benefits in IBS.However,it seems there are many other herbal preparations such as those proposed in traditional medicine of different countries that could be studied and investigated for their efficacy in management of IBS.Roja Rahimi Mohammad Abdollahi 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,7:11
4A review of the efficacy of traditional Iranian medicine forinflammatory bowel disease显示文摘The etiology of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is not yet known,but many factors such as defects in the immune system,oxidative stress,microbial content in the gastrointestinal tract,nuclear factor(NF)-κB,nitric oxide(NO),cyclooxygenase-2(Cox-2),and leukotriene B4(LB4) are thought to play a role in its pathogenesis.In traditional Iranian medicine(TIM),several medicinal plants are thought to be effective for the treatment of IBD.In this study,information on all of these remedies were derived from all available old sources such as documents or notes and books and were added to the information derived from modern medical databases covering all in vitro,in vivo and clinical trials.For some of these plants,only one or two mechanisms of action have been found such as in Cassia fistula,Lepidium sativum,and Bunium persicum.However,for some plants various mechanisms of action are known.For example,Commiphora mukul is effective in IBD due to its immunomodulatory,antioxidant,and antibacterial properties and it decreases NF-κB,NO and Cox-2.Another herb,Plantago ovata,has immunomodulatory,antioxidant,anti-inflammatory and wound healing activities and decreases NO and LB4.Considering the mechanisms of action of these plants,the combination of some of them may be useful because of their many mechanisms of action such as Pistacia lentiscus,Bunium persicum,Solanum nigrum,Plantago ovata,Boswellia,Solanum nigrum,Plantago ovata and Commiphora mukul.For some of the herbal products used in TIM such as oleogum resin from Commiphora myrrha,seeds of Ocimum basilicum,seeds of Linum usitatissimum,gum resin of Dracaena cinnabari,seeds of Plantago major,seeds of Lallementia royleana,and seeds of Allium porrum,there is no or not enough studies to confirm their benefits in IBD.It is suggested that an evaluation of the effects of these plants on different aspects of IBD should be performed.Roja Rahimi Mohammad Abdollahi Mohammad Reza Shams-Ardekani 2010World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,36:10
5Parsley: a review of ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry and biological activities显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To summarize comprehensive information concerning ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacological activities of parsley. METHODS: Databases including PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science were searched for studies focusing on the ethnomedicinal use, phytochemical compounds and biological and pharmacological activities of parsley. Data were collected from 1966 to 2013. The search terms were: 'Parsley' or 'Petroselinum crispum' or 'Petroseli-num hortence '. RESULTS: Parsley has been used as carminative, gastro tonic, diuretic, antiseptic of urinary tract, anti-urolithiasis, anti-dote and anti-inflammatory and for the treatment of amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, gastrointestinal disorder, hypertension, cardiac disease, urinary disease, otitis, sniffle, diabetes and also various dermal disease in traditional and folklore medicines. Phenolic compounds and flavonoids particularly apigenin, apiin and 6'-Acetylapiin; essential oil mainly myristicin and apiol; and also coumarins are the active compounds identified in Petroselinum crispum. Wide range of pharmacological activity including antioxidant, hepatoprotective, brain protective, anti-diabetic, analgesic, spasmolytic, immunosuppressant, anti-platelet, gastroprotective, cytoprotective, laxative, estrogenic, diuretic, hypotensive, antibacterial and antifungal activities have been exhibited for this plant in modern medicine. 6Influence of the roughness and shape of quartz particles on their flotation kinetics显示文摘Surface roughness and shape play an important role on the behavior of particles in various processes such as flotation. In this re-search, the influence of different grinding methods on the surface roughness and shape characteristics of quartz particles as well as the effect of these parameters on the flotation of the particles was investigated. The surface roughness of the particles was determined by measuring their specific surface area via the gas adsorption method. The shape characteristics of the particles were measured and calculated by images obtained by scanning electron microscopy via an image analysis system. The flotation kinetics was determined using a laboratory flotation cell. The results showed that the particles of rod mill products have higher roughness and elongation ratio and lower roundness than the parti-cles of ball mill products. The flotation kinetics constant of the particles increased with their surface roughness increasing. Particles with higher elongation and lower roundness indicated higher floatability. 7Corrosion and Wear Resistance Characterization of Environmentally Friendly Sol-gel Hybrid Nanocomposite Coating on AA5083显示文摘Environmentally friendly organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposite films have been developed by sol-gel method for corrosion protection of AA5083 alloy.The hybrid nanocomposite coatings have been synthesized from tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS) and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane(GPTMS) precursors.The multilayer coatings were prepared by dip-coating technique.Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy was carried out to show the formation of the Si-O-Si structural backbone of the hybrid coatings.Structure and surface morphology of the coatings were studied by optical microscopy(OM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and atomic force microscopy(AFM).Characterization of the coatings with respect to pencil scratch hardness,adhesive and abrasion resistance was performed.The corrosion protection performance of these coatings was examined by using cyclic potentiodynamic polarization technique in Persian Gulf water.The results revealed that crack-free films with smooth surface were obtained. 8Relationship between Temperaments of Medicinal Plants and Their Major Chemical Compounds显示文摘Objective: To determine any relationship between temperaments of medicinal plants referred to traditional Iranian manuscripts and their major chemical compounds. Methods: Plants used in traditional Iranian medicine were categorized based on their major chemical compounds including alkaloids, phenolic compounds, and essential oils. Their temperaments were extracted from traditional herbal pharmacopeias of Iran. The possible relationship between major chemical compounds and temperaments of each group were evaluated. Results: Plants containing phenolic compounds as their major constituents are hot and dry temperaments except those contain tannins with cold and dry temperaments. Plants containing essential oils have hot and dry temperaments except those whose major essential oils with alcoholic structure which have cold and dry temperaments. Alkaloid-containing plants have cold and dry or hot and dry temperaments based on their alkaloidal structures. 10Antidepressants can treat inflammatory bowel disease through regulation of the nuclear factor-κB/nitric oxide pathway and inhibition of cytokine production:A hypothesis显示文摘Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory disorders mainly affecting the colon and small intestine. The main types of IBD are Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). UC is restricted to the large intestine whereas CD can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Treating this disorder depends on the form and level of severity. Common treatment involves an anti-inflammatory drug, such as mesalazine, and an immunosuppressant, such as prednisone. Several signaling pathways, including nuclear factor (NF)-κB and nitric oxide (NO), and genetic and environmental factors are believed to play an important role in IBD. Amitriptyline is a commonly used antidepressant with known anti-inflammatory activities. Amitriptyline also acts on the NF-κB/NO pathway or cytokine production. 11Inpatient capsule endoscopy leads to frequent incomplete small bowel examinations显示文摘AIM:To examine the predictive factors of capsule endoscopy(CE) completion rate(CECR) including the effect of inpatient and outpatient status.METHODS:We identified 355 consecutive patients who completed CE at Rush University Medical Center between March 2003 and October 2005.Subjects for CE had either nothing by mouth or clear liquids for the afternoon and evening of the day before the procedure.CE exams were reviewed by two physicians who were unaware of the study hypotheses.After retrospective analysis,21 cases were excluded due to capsule malfunction,prior gastric surgery,endoscopic capsule placement or insufficient data.Of the remaining 334 exams [264 out-patient(OP),70 in-patient(IP)],CE indications,findings,location of the patients [IP vs OP and intensive care unit(ICU) vs general medical floor(GMF)] and gastrointestinal transit times were analyzed.Statistical analysis was completed using SPSS version 17(Chicago,IL).Chi-square,t test or fisher exact-tests were used as appropriate.Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify variables associated with incomplete CE exams.RESULTS:The mean age for the entire study population was 54.7 years.Sixty-one percent of the study population was female,and gender was not different between IPs vs OPs(P = 0.07).The overall incomplete CECR was 14% in our study.Overt obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(OGB) was a significantly more common indication for the IP CE(P = 0.0001),while abdominal pain and assessment of IBD were more frequent indications for the OP CE exams(P = 0.002 and P = 0.01,respectively).Occult OGB was the most common indication and arteriovenous malformations were the most common finding both in the IPs and OPs.The capsule did not enter the small bowel(SB) in 6/70 IPs and 8/264 OPs(P = 0.04).The capsule never reached the cecum in 31.4%(22/70) of IP vs 9.5%(25/264) of OP examinations(P < 0.001).The mean gastric transit time(GTT) was delayed in IPs compared to OPs,98.5 ± 139.5 min vs 60.4 ± 92.6 min(P = 0.008).Minimal SB transit time was significantly prolonged in the IP compared to the OP setting [IP = 275.1 ±111.6 min vs OP = 244.0 ± 104.3 min(P = 0.037)].CECR was also significantly higher in the subgroup of patients with OGB who had OP vs IP exams(95% vs 80% respectively,P = 0.001).The proportion of patients with incomplete exams was higher in the ICU(n = 7/13,54%) as compared to the GMF(n = 15/57,26%)(P = 0.05).There was only a single permanent SB retention case which was secondary to a previously unknown SB stricture,and the remaining incomplete SB exams were due to slow transit.Medications which affect gastrointestinal system motility were tested both individually and also in aggregate in univariate analysis in hospitalized patients(ICU and GMF) and were not predictive of incomplete capsule passage(P > 0.05).Patient location(IP vs OP) and GTT were independent predictors of incomplete CE exams(P < 0.001 and P = 0.008,respectively).CONCLUSION:Incomplete CE is a multifactorial problem.Patient location and related factors such as severity of illness and sedentary status may contribute to incomplete exams.Cemal Yazici John Losurdo Michael D Brown Scott Oosterveen Robert Rahimi Ali Keshavarzian Leila Bozorgnia Ece Mutlu 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,36:6
12Prevalence of malaria infection in Sarbaz,Sistan and Bluchistan province显示文摘Objective:To survey malaria prevalence in Sarbaz from April 2009 to October 2010.Methods: Epidemiological data of 1 464 confirmed malarial patients were analyzed according to demographic status,sex,age,nationality,isolated species and residence place.Results:The majority of patients were male 930(64.8%) but 514(35.2%) were female.82.5%of patients were Iranian,14%Pakistani immigrants,and 3.5%Afghan immigrants.Data collected showed that 90% of isolated species were Plasmodium vivax,7.8%Plasmodium falciparum,and 2.2%Plasmodium malariae and mixed species.Conclusions:Therefore,it is crystal clear that refugees should be prohibited by government and controlled by experts in health centers in order to campaign effectively with this life threating disease.Youssefi Mohammad Reza Rahimi Mohammad Taghi 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,6:6

14An Experimental Study on Nanofluids Convective Heat Transfer Through a Straight Tube under Constant Heat Flux显示文摘In this work, the laminar convective heat transfer performance and the pressure drop of water-based nanofluids containing Al2O3, TiO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles flowing through a straight circular tube were experimentally investigated. The experimental results showed that addition of small amounts of nano-sized Al2O3 and TiO2 particles to de-ionized water increased heat transfer coefficients considerably, while the SiO2 nanofluids showed the opposite behavior attracting the authors' interests. 16Interventions of natural and synthetic agents in inflammatory bowel disease, modulation of nitric oxide pathways显示文摘Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)refers to a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal(GI)tract.The elevated levels of nitric oxide(NO)in serum and affected tissues;mainly synthesized by the inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)enzyme;can exacerbate GI inflammation and is one of the major biomarkers of GI inflammation.Various natural and synthetic agents are able to ameliorate GI inflammation and decrease iNOS expression to the extent comparable with some IBD drugs.Thereby,the purpose of this study was to gather a list of natural or synthetic mediators capable of modulating IBD through the NO pathway.Electronic databases including Google Scholar and PubMed were searched from 1980 to May 2018.We found that polyphenols and particularly flavonoids are able to markedly attenuate NO production and iNOS expression through the nuclear factorκB(NF-κB)and JAK/STAT signaling pathways.Prebiotics and probiotics can also alter the GI microbiota and reduce NO expression in IBD models through a broad array of mechanisms.A number of synthetic molecules have been found to suppress NO expression either dependent on the NF-κB signaling pathway(i.e.,dexamethasone,pioglitazone,tropisetron)or independent from this pathway(i.e.,nicotine,prednisolone,celecoxib,β-adrenoceptor antagonists).Co-administration of natural and synthetic agents can affect the tissue level of NO and may improve IBD symptoms mainly by modulating the Toll like receptor-4 and NF-κB signaling pathways.Aida Kamalian Masoud Sohrabi Asl Mahsa Dolatshahi Khashayar Afshari Shiva Shamshiri Nazanin Momeni Roudsari Saeideh Momtaz Roja Rahimi Mohammad Abdollahi Amir Hossein Abdolghaffari 2020World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,24:5

19Induction of clinical response and remission of inflammatory bowel disease by use of herbal medicines:A meta-analysis显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of herbal medicines in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)by conducting a meta-analysis.METHODS:Electronic databases were searched for studies investigating efficacy and/or tolerability of herbal medicines in the management of different types of IBD.The search terms were:'herb'or'plant'or'herbal'and'inflammatory bowel disease'.Data were collected from 1966 to 2013(up to Feb).The'clinical response','clinical remission','endoscopic response','endoscopic remission','histological response','histological remission','relapse','any adverse events',and'seriousadverse events'were the key outcomes of interest.We used the Mantel-Haenszel,Rothman-Boice method for fixed effects and DerSimonian-Laird method for random-effects.For subgroup analyses,we separated the studies by type of IBD and type of herbal medicine to determine confounding factors and reliability.RESULTS:Seven placebo controlled clinical trials met our criteria and were included(474 patients).Comparison of herbal medicine with placebo yielded a significant RR of 2.07(95%CI:1.41-3.03,P=0.0002)for clinical remission;a significant RR of 2.59(95%CI:1.24-5.42,P=0.01)for clinical response;a non-significant RR of 1.33(95%CI:0.93-1.9,P=0.12)for endoscopic remission;a non-significant RR of 1.69(95%CI:0.69-5.04)for endoscopic response;a non-significant RR of 0.64(95%CI:0.25-1.81)for histological remission;a non-significant RR of 0.86(95%CI:0.55-1.55)for histological response;a non-significant RR of 0.95(95%CI:0.52-1.73)for relapse;a non-significant RR of 0.89(95%CI:0.75-1.06,P=0.2)for any adverse events;and a non-significant RR of 0.97(95%CI:0.37-2.56,P=0.96)for serious adverse events.CONCLUSION:The results showed that herbal medicines may safely induce clinical response and remission in patients with IBD without significant effects on endoscopic and histological outcomes,but the number of studies is limited to make a strong conclusion.Roja Rahimi Shekoufeh Nikfar Mohammad Abdollahi 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,34:4
20Cattle toxoplasmosis in Iran:a systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Objective:To analyze and review the overall seroprevalence rate of Toxoplasma gondii(T.gondii) infection in cattle from Iran.Methods:In the current study,data collection(published and unpublished papers,abstracts of national scientific congresses and dissertations) using particular terms was carried out systematically on the following electronic databases like PubMed,Google Scholar,Ebsco,Science Direct,Scopus,Magiran,Irandoc,IranMedex and SID(Scientific Information Database).Results:A total of 22 studies since 1983 to 2012 reporting the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in cattle from different regions of Iran met our eligibility criteria.The pooled proportion of toxoplasmosis,using random effect model,among cattle in Iran from over the 30-year period was estimated 18.1%(95%CI:9.9%to 28.2%).Conclusions:This study firstly establishes a crude seroprevalence rate of Toxoplasma infection in cattle which can lead us to understand the condition of eattle toxoplasmosis,which have to take into accounted fur an appropriate and effective prevention and controls.Secondly,it compares and discusses elaborately the role of risk factors including sex,age and breed in the epidemiology of the disease.Thus,it determines gaps and drawbacks in the prior studies which are greatly useful to design more accurate investigations in the future.Shahabeddin Sarvi Ahmad Daryani Mohammad Taghi Rahimi Mohsen Aarabi Azar Shokri Ehsan Ahmadpour Azadeh Mizani Mahdi Sharif 2015Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2015,8,2:4
