| 1 | Nitrous Oxide Emission by Agricultural Soils: A Review of Spatial and Temporal Variability for Mitigation显示文摘This short review deals with soils as an important source of the greenhouse gas N2O. The production and consumption of N2O in soils mainly involve biotic processes: the anaerobic process of denitrification and the aerobic process of nitrification. The factors that significantly influence agricultural N2O emissions mainly concern the agricultural practices (N application rate, crop type, fertilizer type) and soil conditions (soil moisture, soil organic C content, soil pH and texture). Large variability of N2O fluxes is known to occur both at different spatial and temporal scales. Currently new techniques could help to improve the capture of the spatial variability. Continuous measurement systems with automatic chambers could also help to capture temporal variability and consequently to improve quantification of N2O emissions by soils. Some attempts for mitigating soil N2O emissions, either by modifying agricultural practices or by managing soil microbial functioning taking into account the origin of the soil N2O emission variability, are reviewed. | C. | 4 | PM_(2.5) source apportionment in a French urban coastal site under steelworks emission influences using constrained non-negative matrix factorization receptor model显示文摘The constrained weighted-non-negative matrix factorization(CW-NMF) hybrid receptor model was applied to study the influence of steelmaking activities on PM_(2.5)(particulate matter with equivalent aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm) composition in Dunkerque,Northern France. Semi-diurnal PM_(2.5)samples were collected using a high volume sampler in winter 2010 and spring 2011 and were analyzed for trace metals, water-soluble ions, and total carbon using inductively coupled plasma – atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES),ICP- mass spectrometry(ICP-MS), ionic chromatography and micro elemental carbon analyzer. The elemental composition shows that NO_3^-, SO_4^(2-), NH_4^+and total carbon are the main PM_(2.5)constituents. Trace metals data were interpreted using concentration roses and both influences of integrated steelworks and electric steel plant were evidenced. The distinction between the two sources is made possible by the use Zn/Fe and Zn/Mn diagnostic ratios. Moreover Rb/Cr, Pb/Cr and Cu/Cd combination ratio are proposed to distinguish the ISW-sintering stack from the ISW-fugitive emissions. The a priori knowledge on the influencing source was introduced in the CW-NMF to guide the calculation. Eleven source profiles with various contributions were identified: 8 are characteristics of coastal urban background site profiles and 3 are related to the steelmaking activities. Between them,secondary nitrates, secondary sulfates and combustion profiles give the highest contributions and account for 93% of the PM_(2.5)concentration. | 5 | Phase Diversity Electro-optic Sampling:A new approach to single-shot terahertz waveform recording显示文摘Recording electric field evolution in single-shot with THz bandwidth is needed in science including spectroscopy,plasmas,biology,chemistry,Free-Electron Lasers,accelerators,and material inspection.However,the potential application range depends on the possibility to achieve sub-picosecond resolution over a long time window,which is a largely open problem for single-shot techniques.To solve this problem,we present a new conceptual approach for the so-called spectral decoding technique,where a chirped laser pulse interacts with a THz signal in a Pockels crystal,and is analyzed using a grating optical spectrum analyzer.By borrowing mathematical concepts from photonic time stretch theory and radio-frequency communication,we deduce a novel dual-output electro-optic sampling system,for which the input THz signal can be numerically retrieved—with unprecedented resolution—using the so-called phase diversity technique.We show numerically and experimentally that this approach enables the recording of THz waveforms in single-shot over much longer durations and/or higher bandwidth than previous spectral decoding techniques.We present and test the proposed DEOS(Diversity Electro-Optic Sampling)design for recording 1.5 THz bandwidth THz pulses,over 20 ps duration,in single-shot.Then we demonstrate the potential of DEOS in accelerator physics by recording,in two successive shots,the shape of 200 fs RMS relativistic electron bunches at European X-FEL,over 10 ps recording windows.The designs presented here can be used directly for accelerator diagnostics,characterization of THz sources,and single-shot Time-Domain Spectroscopy. | Eléonore Roussel Christophe Szwaj Clément Evain Bernd Steffen Christopher Gerth Bahram Jalali Serge Bielawski | 2022 | Light(Science & Applications)2022,11,1: | 3 |
| 6 | Association between early viral lower respiratory tract infections and subsequent asthma development显示文摘BACKGROUND The association between hospitalization for human respiratory syncytial virus(HRSV)bronchiolitis in early childhood and subsequent asthma is well established.The long-term prognosis for non-bronchiolitis lower respiratory tract infections(LRTI)caused by viruses different from HRSV and rhinovirus,on the other hand,has received less interest.AIM To investigate the relationship between infant LRTI and later asthma and examine the influence of confounding factors.METHODS The PubMed and Global Index Medicus bibliographic databases were used to search for articles published up to October 2021 for this systematic review.We included cohort studies comparing the incidence of asthma between patients with and without LRTI at≤2 years regardless of the virus responsible.The meta-analysis was performed using the random effects model.Sources of heterogeneity were assessed by stratified analyses.RESULTS This review included 15 articles(18 unique studies)that met the inclusion criteria.LRTIs at≤2 years were associated with an increased risk of subsequent asthma up to 20 years[odds ratio(OR)=5.0,95%CI:3.3-7.5],with doctor-diagnosed asthma(OR=5.3,95%CI:3.3-8.6),current asthma(OR=5.4,95%CI:2.7-10.6),and current medication for asthma(OR=1.2,95%CI:0.7-3.9).Our overall estimates were not affected by publication bias(P=0.671),but there was significant heterogeneity[I 2=58.8%(30.6-75.5)].Compared to studies with hospitalized controls without LRTI,those with ambulatory controls had a significantly higher strength of association between LRTIs and subsequent asthma.The strength of the association between LRTIs and later asthma varied significantly by country and age at the time of the interview.The sensitivity analyses including only studies with similar proportions of confounding factors(gender,age at LRTI development,age at interview,gestational age,birth weight,weight,height,smoking exposure,crowding,family history of atopy,and family history of asthma)between cases and controls did not alter the overall estimates.CONCLUSION Regardless of the causative virus and confounding factors,viral LRTIs in children<2 years are associated with an increased risk of developing a subsequent asthma.Parents and pediatricians should be informed of this risk. | Sebastien Kenmoe Etienne Atenguena Okobalemba Guy Roussel Takuissu Jean Thierry Ebogo-Belobo Martin Gael Oyono Jeannette Nina Magoudjou-Pekam Ginette Irma Kame-Ngasse Jean Bosco Taya-Fokou Chris Andre Mbongue Mikangue Raoul Kenfack-Momo Donatien Serge Mbaga Arnol Bowo-Ngandji Cyprien Kengne-Ndé Seraphine Nkie Esemu Richard Njouom Lucy Ndip | 2022 | World Journal of Critical Care Medicine2022,11,4: | 3 |
| 7 | Activation of the pattern recognition receptor NOD1 augments colon cancer metastasis显示文摘While emerging data suggest nucleotide oligomerization domain receptor 1(NOD1),a cytoplasmic pattern recognition receptor,may play an important and complementary role in the immune response to bacterial infection,its role in cancer metastasis is entirely unknown.Hence,we sought to determine the effects of NOD1 on metastasis.NOD1 expression in paired human primary colon cancer,human and murine colon cancer cells were determined using immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting(WB).Clinical significance of NOD1 was assessed using TCGA survival data.A series of in vitro and in vivo functional assays,including adhesion,migration,and metastasis,was conducted to assess the effect of NOD1.C12-iE-DAP,a highly selective NOD1 ligand derived from gram-negative bacteria,was used to activate NOD1.ML130,a specific NOD1 inhibitor,was used to block C12-iE-DAP stimulation.Stable knockdown(KD)of NOD1 in human colon cancer cells(HT29)was constructed with shRNA lentiviral transduction and the functional assays were thus repeated.Lastly,the predominant signaling pathway of NOD1-activation was identified using WB and functional assays in the presence of specific kinase inhibitors.Our data demonstrate that NOD1 is highly expressed in human colorectal cancer(CRC)and human and murine CRC cell lines.Clinically,we demonstrate that this increased NOD1 expression negatively impacts survival in patients with CRC.Subsequently,we identify NOD1 activation by C12-iE-DAP augments CRC cell adhesion,migration and metastasis.These effects are predominantly mediated via the p38 mitogen activated protein kinase(MAPK)pathway.This is the first study implicating NOD1 in cancer metastasis,and thus identifying this receptor as a putative therapeutic target. | Henry Y.Jiang Sara Najmeh Guy Martel Elyse MacFadden-Murphy Raquel Farias Paul Savage Arielle Leone Lucie Roussel Jonathan Cools-Lartigue Stephen Gowing Julie Berube Betty Giannias France Bourdeau Carlos HFChan Jonathan D.Spicer Rebecca McClure Morag Park Simon Rousseau Lorenzo E.Ferri | 2020 | Protein & Cell2020,11,3: | 3 |
