| 1 | Neurocysticercosis:A case report and brief review显示文摘Neurocysticercosis(NCC) is one of the seven neglected endemic zoonoses targeted by the World Health Organization.It is considered a common infection of the nervous system caused by the Tanenia solium and is known to be the primary cause of preventable epilepsy in many developing countries.NCC is commonly resulted by the ingestion of Tanenia solium eggs after consuming undercooked pork,or contaminated water.The parasite can grow in the brain and spinal cord within the nervous system,causing severe headache and seizures beside other pathological manifestations.Immigration and international travel to endemic countries has made this disease common in the United States.NCC can be diagnosed with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain.The treatment of the NCC including cysticidal drugs(eg.,albendazole and praziquantel),and neurosurgical procedure,depending upon a the situation.A patient of Asian origin came to our clinic with complaints of dizziness,headaches and episodes seizures for the past twelve years without proper diagnosis.The computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans indicated multilobulated cystic mass in the brain with the suspicion of neurocysticercosis. | Syed A.A.Rizvi Ayman M.Saleh Hanns Frimpong Hussain M.Al Mohiy Jasmin Ahmed Ronda D.Edwards Sultan S.Ahmed | 2016 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2016,9,1: | 7 |
| 2 | APOBEC deaminases-mutases with defensive roles for immunity显示文摘In recent years, tremendous progress has been made in the elucidation of the biological roles and molecular mechanisms of the apolioprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide (APOBEC) family of enzymes. The APOBEC family of cytidine deaminases has important functional roles within the adaptive and innate immune system. Activation induced cytidine deaminase (AID) plays a central role in the biochemical steps of somatic hypermutation and class switch recombination during antibody maturation, and the APOBEC 3 enzymes are able to inhibit the mobility of retroelements and the replication of retroviruses and DNA viruses, such as the human immunodeficiency virus type-1 and hepatitis B virus. Recent advances in structural and functional studies of the APOBEC enzymes provide new biochemical insights for how these enzymes carry out their biological roles. | 3 | Analysis of the influencing factors of PAEs volatilization from typical plastic products显示文摘The primary emphasis of this research was to investigate the foundations of phthalate(PAEs) pollutant source researches and then firstly confirmed the concept of the coefficient of volatile strength, namely phthalate total content in per unit mass and unit surface area of pollutant sources. Through surveying and evaluating the coefficient of volatile strength of PAEs from typical plastic products, this research carried out reasonable classification of PAEs pollutant sources into three categories and then investigated the relationship amongst the coefficient of volatile strength as well as other environmental factors and the concentration level of total PAEs in indoor air measured in environment chambers.Research obtained phthalate concentration results under different temperature, humidity,the coefficient of volatile strength and the closed time through the chamber experiment. In addition, this study further explored the correlation and ratio of influencing factors that affect the concentration level of total PAEs in environment chambers, including environmental factors, the coefficient of volatile strengths of PAEs and contents of total PAEs in plastic products. | 4 | Serelaxin increases the antifibrotic action of rosiglitazone in a model of hepatic fibrosis显示文摘AIM To determine the effect of combined serelaxin and rosiglitazone treatment on established hepatic fibrosis.METHODS Hepatic fibrosis was induced in mice by carbon tetrachloride administration for 6 wk, or vehicle alone(nonfibrotic mice). For the final 2 wk, mice were treated with rosiglitazone, serelaxin, or both rosiglitazone and serelaxin. Serum liver enzymes and relaxin levels were determined by standard methods. The degree of liver collagen content was determined by histology and immunohistochemistry. Expression of type?Ⅰ?collagen was determined by quantitative PCR. Activation of hepatic stellate cells was assessed by alpha-smoothmuscle actin(SMA) levels. Liver peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1 alpha(PGC1α) was determined by Western blotting.RESULTS Treatment of mice with CCl4 resulted in hepatic fibrosis as evidenced by increased liver enzyme levels(ALT and AST), and increased liver collagen and SMA. Monotherapy with either serelaxin or rosiglitazone for 2 wk was generally without effect. In contrast, the combination of serelaxin and rosiglitazone resulted in significantly improved ALT levels(P < 0.05). Total liver collagen content as determined by Sirius red staining revealed that only combination treatment was effective in reducing total liver collagen(P < 0.05). These results were supported by immunohistochemistry for type?Ⅰ?collagen, in which only combination treatment reduced fibrillar collagen levels(P < 0.05). The level of hepatic stellate cell activation was modestly, but significantly, reduced by serelaxin treatment alone, but combination treatment resulted in significantly lower SMA levels.
