On a class of weak Landsberg metrics显示文摘In this paper, we discuss a class of Finsler metrics defined by a Riemannian metric and a 1-form on a manifold. We characterize weak Landsberg metrics in this class and show that there exist weak Landsberg metrics which are not Landsberg metrics in dimension greater than two. | Ben-ling LI & Zhong-min SHEN Department of Mathematics, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310028, China Department of Mathematical Sciences, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), 402 N. | 2 | The roles of a decision support system in applying forest ecosystem management in Northeast China显示文摘Forest ecosystems provide a variety of services and forest ecosystem management (FEM) is an effective approach to maximize the services. Because of the complexity of forest ecosystems, the applications of FEM can be facilitated with decision support systems (DSS) that recognize and incorporate ecological and socio-economic variables. With the rapid development of computation and information technologies, DSS have been advanced in many ways. Traditional forest management within a forestry unit in China is planned on a yearly basis. The planning itself remains primarily a verbal concept as there are no quantitative decision-support tools available to translate the concept into forest management actions. For the purposes of FEM at the management level, a forest management DFF, FORESTAR(R), has been developed under a framework of geographic information system (GIS) and forest models. The paper explained the intelligent modeling mechanisms and demonstrated how the applications of FEM can be strengthened with the applications of FORESTAR(R). | DAI Limin, ZHENG Bofu, Guofan Shao & ZHOU Li State Key Lab of Systems Ecology, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100085, China Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907, USA Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China | 2006 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2006,49,z1: | 9
Digitally determining forest inventory units with an ecological classification system显示文摘Management-level forest resource data in China were obtained with a combination of two forest inventories. However, inconsistencies in the spatial attributes of forest data vary between the two inventory types and between two inventories of the same type. The inconsistencies make it inconvenient for long-term forest management planning with digital technologies. Ecological Land Types (ELTs) and Ecological Land Type Phases (ELTPs) have been mapped in selected forestry regions in northeast China, where important forest industries are located. The boundaries of ELTs are determined by geomorphic conditions, which are quantified by Digital Elevation Models (DEM); ELTPs are classified by overlaying ELTs with forest vegetation data layers that are obtained with both remotely sensed and ground data. The ELTPs represent the divisions of land in terms of both natural and human-induced forest conditions, and therefore they are reliable units for forest inventories and management. This paper introduces a case study for digitally determining forest inventory units in Benxi City, Liaoning Province, northeast China. The general objective of the study was to explain how a compatible forest inventory system should be designed and why the compatible forest inventory system was significant to digital forestry in China. | TANG Una, WANG Qingli, Guofan Shao, DAI Limin, WANG Shunzhong, LI Xiufen & XU Dong Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907, USA | 2006 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2006,49,z1: | 6
A density-dependent matrix model and its applications in optimizing harvest schemes显示文摘Based on temporal data collected from 36 re-measured plots, transition probabilities of trees from a diameter class to a higher class were analyzed for the broadleaved-Korean pine forest in the Changbai Mountains. It was found that the transition probabilities were related not only to diameter size but also to the total basal area of trees with the diameter class. This paper demonstrates the development of a density-dependent matrix model, DM2, and a series of simulations with it for forest stands with different conditions under different harvest schemes. After validations with independent field data, this model proved a suitable tool for optimization analysis of harvest schemes on computers. The optimum harvest scheme(s) can be determined by referring to stand growth, total timbers harvested, and size diversity changes over time. Three user-friendly interfaces were built with a forest management decision support system FORESTAR(R) for easy operations of DM2 by forest managers. This paper also summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of DM2. | Guofan Shao, WANG Fei, DAI Limin, BAI Jianwei & LI Yingshan Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907, USA Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China Inner Mongolia Agriculture University, Hohhot 010019, China Academy of Forest Inventory and Planning, State Forestry Administration, Beijing 100714, China | 2006 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2006,49,z1: | 4
Mapping forest fire risk zones with spatial data and principal component analysis显示文摘By integrating forest inventory data with remotely sensed data, new data layers for factors that affect forest fire potentials were generated for Baihe Forestry Bureau in Jilin Province of China. The principle component analysis was used to sort out the relationships between forest fire potentials and environmental factors. The classifications of these factors were performed with GIS, generating three maps: a fuel-based fire risk map, a topography-based fire risk map, and an anthropogenic-factor fire risk map. These three maps were then synthesized to generate the final fire risk map. The linear regression method was used to analyze the relationship between an area-weighted value of forest fire risks and the frequency of historical forest fires at each forest farm. The results showed that the most important factor contributing to forest fire ignition was topography, followed by anthropogenic factors. | XU Dong, Guofan Shao, DAI Limin, HAO Zhanqing, TANG Lei & WANG Hui Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100039, China Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907, USA Department of Management, Shenyang Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Shenyang 110034, China Department of City Development, Jinan University, Jinan 250002, China | 2006 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2006,49,z1: | 3
Quantifying soil erosion with GIS-based RUSLE under different forest management options in Jianchang Forest Farm显示文摘Quantitatively estimating soil erosion with an integration of geographic information system (GIS) and the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) under four different exposed soil proportion scenarios caused by forest management practices was studied at Jianchang Forest Farm. The GIS provided means of input data generation required by RUSLE model and allowed a spatial assessment of the erosion hazard over the study area. Four exposed soil proportion scenarios of 5%, 10%, 20% and 30% were tested with the GIS-based RUSLE model to evaluate soil erosion hazard. The predicted soil erosion potentials were classified into five categories in order to provide valuable aids for management planning. | ZHANG Hengming, WANG Qingli, DAI Limin, Guofan Shao, TANG Una, WANG Shunzhong & GU Huiyan Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University, Lafayette IN47901, USA Northeast Forestry University, Harbin 150040, China | 2006 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2006,49,z1: | 3

Digital forestry research in China显示文摘Digital Forestry as a concept was developed after the Digital Earth program. The Chinese scientists were not only among the pioneers who first proposed the concept of Digital Forestry, but also contributed a lot to the development of Digital Forestry. Digital Forestry is a digital framework to maintain forest planting, management, using, and protect. The synergetic use of computationally-intensive quantitative methods together with information technologies is the most important foundation for the development of Digital Forestry. Under this situation, the experience of Digital Forestry development in China is relatively rich. A number of academicians, scholars, and professional administrators were involved in discussing the Digital Forestry Construction Scheme. The Project of Digital Forestry Practicability approved by the State Forestry Administration is a major instance in developing Digital Forestry standard and key techniques. By introducing a case study of Digital Forestry, this paper reviews the concept of Digital Forestry, the way turning traditional forestry into Digital Forestry, and the future development of Digital Forestry. | TANG Shouzheng, TANG Una, Guofan Shao & DAI Limin Research Institute of Resource Information Techniques, Chinese Academy of Forestry, Beijing 100091, China Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China Departmet of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907, USA Graduate University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China | 2006 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2006,49,z1: | 2
The tricks plants use to reach appropriate light显示文摘The perception of ambient light signals that produce a relevant response to ensure exposure to appropriate levels of light energy is vital for plants. In response to this, intricate molecular mechanisms to mediate light signaling have evolved in plants. Among the responses induced by light, seedling extension is a determining event for plant survival in darkness, especially in the initial stage of plant growth. Here we review previous studies and recent progress towards an understanding of light signaling that regulates seedling elongation. We focus on the three regions of the sunlight spectrum that primarily control seedling elongation, namely red/far-red light, blue/UV-A light and UV-B light, and summarize the four signaling pathways that correspond to the three effective spectra. | CHAO DaiYin1 & LIN HongXuan2 1Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907, USA 2National Key Laboratory of Plant Molecular Genetics, Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai 200032, China | 2010 | Science China(Life Sciences)2010,53,8: | 2

Thermal Comfort in Waiting Room at Railway Station in Cold Region in China显示文摘A field study and analysis about the thermal comfort was carried out in the waiting room at Beijing West Rail Station in Chinese cold region.Passengers' TSV(thermal sense vote)was obtained using statistical method on the basis of more than 1 200 questionnaires. The linear regression between TSV and indoor temperature indicates that thermal neutral temperature is 25.2 ℃.According to the percentage of satisfaction among all passengers under different indoor temperatures, the acceptable temperature range in the waiting room is 24.2~30.2℃.It is also found that passengers' temporary stay should be taken into consideration for the thermal comfort analysis.Passengers' TSV is not a constant value after they enter the waiting room.In fact,ΔTSV increases as passengers are waiting for the train, and the growing rate is dependent on indoor-outdoor temperature difference. The greater the temperature difference, the faster ΔTSV increases. At last,a linear regression between indoor comfortable temperature and outdoor temperature was generated as the adaptive comfort model. | MA Wei-wu,CHEN Qian-zhou,ZHOU Jie-min,SHI Xiang-nan,LI Li-qing,WANG Chao,CHEN Zhi-ya(1.School of Energy Science and Engineering,Central South University,Changsha,Hunan 410083,China 2.Department of Mechanical Engineering,Purdue University,Calumet,Hammond 46323,USA 3.School of Traffic and Transportation Engineering,Central South University,Changsha,Hunan 410083,China) | 2009 | 湖南大学学报(自然科学版)2009,36,S1: | 1

GIS-based analysis of forest degradations in Baihe Forestry Bureau, northeast China显示文摘Forests in the Changbai Mountains are important timber sources for economic development of the society and provide ecological services in northeast China. In order to strengthen forest resource management, this paper analyzed management-induced changes in forest structure, tree species composition and forest landscape pattern from 1987 to 2000 for Baihe Forestry Bureau in Jilin Province based on digitized forest parcel maps and forest survey data. The results suggested that the area of Mature, High-Stocking, and Close-Canopy Forests decreased by 31.4%, 55.9% and 10.7% respectively; volume of Mixed Forest, the native forest vegetation type, decreased by 17.8%;the number of patches increased tremendously but the mean patch density decreased sharply for Mature, High-Stocking, Close-Canopy, and Mixed Forests. All the changes in forest structure, species composition, and landscape pattern indicated severe degradations going on with the forests in Baihe Forestry Bureau. Because of the effect of degradation to forest services, restoring forest resources and protecting biodiversity has become urgently important. The strategies of sustainable forest management need to be worked out and implemented. | ZHOU Li, DAI Limin , Guofan Shao, XU Dong, WANG Hui & BAI Jianwei Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907, USA Department of City Development, Jinan University, Jinan 250002, China Academy of Forest Inventory and Planning, State Forestry Administration, Beijing 100714, China | 2006 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2006,49,z1: | 1

A HYPERBOLIC SYSTEM OF CONSERVATION LAWS FOR FLUID FLOWS THROUGH COMPLIANT AXISYMMETRIC VESSELS显示文摘We are concerned with the derivation and analysis of one-dimensional hyperbolic systems of conservation laws modelling fluid flows such as the blood flow through compliant axisymmetric vessels.Early models derived are nonconservative and/or nonhomogeneous with measure source terms, which are endowed with infinitely many Riemann solutions for some Riemann data.In this paper,we derive a one-dimensional hyperbolic system that is conservative and homogeneous. Moreover, there exists a unique global Riemann solution for the Riemann problem for two vessels with arbitrarily large Riemann data, under a natural stability entropy criterion. The Riemann solutions may consist of four waves for some cases. The system can also be written as a 3×3 system for which strict hyperbolicity fails and the standing waves can be regarded as the contact discontinuities corresponding to the second family with zero eigenvalue. | Gui-Qiang G.Chen School of Mathematical Sciences,Fudan University,Shanghai 200433,China Mathematical Institute,University of Oxford,24-29 St Giles,Oxford,OX1 3LB,UK Department of Mathematics,Northwestern University,Evanston,IL 60208-2730,USA Weihua Ruan Department of Mathematics,Computer Science and Statistics,Purdue University Calumet,Hammond,IN 46323-2094,USA | 2010 | Acta Mathematica Scientia2010,30,2: | 0
