1Peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness measurement with SD-OCT in normal and glaucomatous eyes:distribution and correlation with age显示文摘AIM:To determine peripapillary retinal fiber layer thickness(RNFL) measured with spectral domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT) in normal and glaucomatous eyes in a large sample of exclusively white population and compare results with other similarly constructed studies. METHODS:Average,maximum,minimum and per quadrant RNFL thickness were measured in normal and glaucomatous Greek patients with a scanning laser ophthalmoscope(SLO)/SD-OCT device.The effect of age in normal RNFL thickness was also determined.RESULTS:A total of 278 normal(278 patients) and 67 glaucomatous(67 patients) eyes were included in the study.Average RNFL thickness was 114.8±13.3μm in normal and 92.1±18.5μm in glaucomatous eyes(P<0.001).In normal discs,superior quadrant was the thickest,followed by the inferior,nasal and temporal.Decline of normal RNFL thickness with age was statistically significant for average RNFL thickness(1.92μm per decade of life) and for the superior and inferior quadrants of the disc. 2Development of a quantum-dot-labelled magnetic immunoassay method for circulating colorectal cancer cell detection显示文摘AIM:To detect of colorectal cancer(CRC) circulating tumour cells(CTCs) surface antigens,we present an assay incorporating cadmium selenide quantum dots(QDs) in these paper.METHODS:The principle of the assay is the immunomagnetic separation of CTCs from body fluids in conjunction with QDs,using specific antibody biomarkers:epithelial cell adhesion molecule antibody,and monoclonal cytokeratin 19 antibody.The detection signal was acquired from the fluorescence signal of QDs.For the evaluation of the performance,the method under study was used to isolate the human colon adenocarcinoma cell line(DLD-1) and CTCs from CRC patients' peripheral blood.RESULTS:The minimum detection limit of the assay was defined to 10 DLD-1 CRC cells/mL as fluorescence was measured with a spectrofluorometer.Fluorescenceactivated cell sorting analysis and Real Time RT-PCR,they both have also been used to evaluate the performance of the described method.In conclusion,we developed a simple,sensitive,efficient and of lower cost(than the existing ones) method for the detection of CRC CTCs in human samples.We have accomplished these results by using magnetic bead isolation and subsequent QD fluorescence detection.CONCLUSION:The method described here can be easily adjusted for any other protein target of either the CTC or the host.Maria Gazouli Anna Lyberopoulou Pericles Pericleous Spyros Rizos Gerassimos Aravantinos Nikolaos Nikiteas Nicholas P Anagnou Efstathios P Efstathopoulos 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,32:6

4Performance assessment of simple and modified cycle turboshaft gas turbines显示文摘This paper focuses on investigations encompassing comparative assessment of gasturbine cycle options.More specifically,investigation was caried out of technical performanceof turboshaft engine cycles based on existing simple cycle(SC)and its projected modifiedcycles for civil helicopter application.Technically,thermal efficiency,specific fuel consump-tion,and power output are of paramount importance to the overall performance of gas urbineengines.In course of carrying out this research,turbomatch software established at CranfieldUniversity based on gas turbine theory was applied to conduct simulation of a simple cycle(baseline)two-spool helicopter turboshaft engine model with free power turbine.Similarly,some modified gas urbine cycle configurations incoporating unconventional components,such as engine cycle with low pressure compressor(LPC)zero-staged,recuperated enginecycle,and intercooled/recuperated(ICR)engine cycle,were also simulated.In doing so,designpoint(DP)and off-design point(OD)performances of the engine models were established.Thepercentage changes in performance parameters of the modified cycle engines over the simplecycle were evaluated and it was found that to a large extent,the modified engine cycles withunconventional components exhibit better performances in terms of thermal efficiency andspecific fuel consumption than the traditional simple cycle engine.This research made use ofpublic domain open source references.Barinyima Nkoi Pericles Pilidis Theoklis Nikolaidis 2013Propulsion and Power Research2013,2,2:4
5Role of adipose-derived stromal cells in pedicle skin flap survival in experimental animal models显示文摘The use of skin flaps in reconstructive surgery is the first-line surgical treatment for the reconstruction of skin defects and is essentially considered the starting point of plastic surgery. Despite their excellent usability, their application includes general surgical risks or possible complications, the primary and most common is necrosis of the flap. To improve flap survival, researchers have used different methods, including the use of adiposederived stem cells, with significant positive results. 7Performance of small-scale aero-derivative industrial gas turbines derived from helicopter engines显示文摘This paper considers comparative assessment of simple and advanced cycle small-scale aero-derivative industrial gas turbines derived from helicopter engines.More particularly,investigation was made of technical performance of the small-scale aero-derivative engine cycles based on existing and projected cycles for applications in industrial power generation,combined heat and power concept,rotating equipment driving,and/or allied processes.The investigation was done by carrying out preliminary design and performance simulation of a simple cycle(baseline)two-spool small-scale aero-derivative turboshaft engine model,and some advanced counterpart aero-derivative configurations.The advanced configurations consist of recuperated and intercooled/recuperated engine cycles of same nominal power rating of 1.567 MW.The baseline model was derived from the conversion of an existing helicopter engine model.In doing so,design point and off-design point performances of the engine models were established.In comparing their performances,it was observed that to a large extent,the advanced engine cycles showed superior performance in terms of thermal efficiency,and specific fuel consumption.In numerical terms,thermal efficiencies of recuperated engine cycle,and intercooled/recuperated engine cycles,over the simple cycle at DP increased by 13.5%,and 14.5%respectively,whereas specific fuel consumption of these cycles over simple cycle at DP decreased by 12.5%,and 13%respectively.This research relied on open access public literature for data.Barinyima Nkoi Pericles Pilidis Theoklis Nikolaidis 2013Propulsion and Power Research2013,2,4:2

9Numerical study of crucial parameters in tilt casting for titanium aluminides显示文摘Numerical modeling of the tilt casting process for TiAl alloys was investigated to achieve a tranquil mould filling and TiAl castings free of defects. Titanium alloys are very reactive in molten state, so they are widely melted in cold crucible, e.g. the Induction Skull Melting (ISM) furnace. Then the crucible holding the molten metal together with the mould is rotated to transfer the metal into the mould--ISM+ tilt casting. This paper emphasizes the effect of crucial parameters on mould filling and solidification of the castings during tilt casting. All crucial parameters, such as rotation rate, rotation profile, venting, initial mould temperature, casting orientation, feeder design, change of radius in'T'junction and mould insulation have been discussed using numerical modeling data. Simulations were performed using a 3D CFD code PHYSICA implemented with front tracking, heat transfer algorithms and a turbulence model (which accounts for an advancing solid front).Hong Wang G.
