| 1 | Mathematical modeling of COVID-19 epidemic with effect of awareness programs显示文摘Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-COV-2)is a novel virus that emerged in China in late 2019 and caused a pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).The epidemic has largely been controlled in China since March 2020,but continues to inflict severe public health and socioeconomic burden in other parts of the world.One of the major reasons for China’s success for the fight against the epidemic is the effectiveness of its health care system and enlightenment(awareness)programs which play a vital role in the control of the COVID-19 pandemic.Nigeria is currently witnessing a rapid increase of the epidemic likely due to its unsatisfactory health care system and inadequate awareness programs.In this paper,we propose a mathematical model to study the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 in Nigeria.Our model incorporates awareness programs and different hospitalization strategies for mild and severe cases,to assess the effect of public awareness on the dynamics of COVID-19 infection.We fit the model to the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria from 29 March to 12 June 2020.We find that the epidemic could increase if awareness programs are not properly adopted.We presumed that the effect of awareness programs could be estimated.Further,our results suggest that the awareness programs and timely hospitalization of active cases are essential tools for effective control and mitigation of COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria and beyond.Finally,we perform sensitive analysis to point out the key parameters that should be considered to effectively control the epidemic. | Salihu Sabiu Musa Sania Qureshi Shi Zhao Abdullahi Yusuf Umar Tasiu Mustapha Daihai He | 2021 | Infectious Disease Modelling2021,6,1: | 3 |
| 2 | Survey on Avian Malaria Parasites in Village Chickens(Gallus gallus domesticus)in Gombe Local Government Area,Gombe State,Nigeria显示文摘Reports of avian malaria parasites in village chicken in Nigeria generally remain fragmentary and scarce.The study was conducted in Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State,Nigeria to investigate avian malaria parasites in Village Chickens(Gallus gallus domesticus)and to determine the risk factors associated with the prevalence of the haemoparasites.A total of 530 village chickens blood samples were obtained from apparently healthy village chickens'brachial veins using sterile 2mls syringes and 23 gauge needles.Thin blood smear was made from each blood sample,and Giemsa stained and examined for the presence of avian haemoparasites under an electro-microscope.The result indicates 23.8%overall prevalence rate of three species of avian malaria parasites consisting of Plasmodium,Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon species.Plasmodium spp.has the highest prevalent rate of 13.0%followed by Haemoproteus spp.(5.1%),mixed Plasmodium spp.+Haemoproteus spp.(4.9%)infection and Leucocytozoon spp.(0.8%).Prevalence of avian malaria parasites was significantly higher in cocks compared to hens(p<0.05),as well as higher in adults compared to growers chickens(p<0.05).This study also showed a higher prevalence of avian malaria parasites during the rainy season compared to the dry season of the study period.It was concluded that haemoparasites of Plasmodium,Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon species that occur in both single and mixed infections are prevalent among village chickens that are apparently healthy in Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State,Nigeria. | Jallailudeen Rabana Lawal Umar Isa Ibrahim Abdullahi Abubakar Biu Hassan Ismail Musa | 2021 | Veterinary Science Research2021,3,2: | 0 |
| 3 | Mathematical modeling and analysis of schistosomiasis transmission dynamics显示文摘Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease from the family of Schistosomatidae and genus Schistosoma,which is caused by blood flukes.The disease is endemic in many countries and still a serious threat to global public health and development.In this paper,a new deterministic model is designed and analyzed qualitatively to explore the dynamics of schistosomiasis transmission in human,cattle and snail populations.Results from our mathematical analysis show that the model has a disease-free equilibrium(DFE)which is locally asymptotically stable(LAS)whenever a particular epidemiological threshold quantity,also known as basic reproduction number(R0)is less than unity.Further analysis shows that the model has a unique endemic equilibrium(EE)which is globally asymptotically stable whenever R0>1 and unstable when R0<1.Furthermore,we adopt partial rank correlation coefficient for sensitivity analysis to reveal the most important parameters for effective control and mitigation of schistosomiasis disease in a community.Finally,we obtain some numerical results by simulating the entire dynamics of the model,which show that the infections in the compartments of each population decrease with respect to time.This further indicates that avoiding contact with infected human,cattle or infested water is vital to prevent the spread of schistosomiasis disease infection. | Umar T.Mustapha Salihu S.Musa Muhammad A.Lawan Aliyu Abba Evren Hincal Musa D.Mohammed Bashir D.Garba Rabiu B.Yunus Shehu A.Adamu Daihai He | 2021 | International Journal of Modeling, Simulation, and Scientific Computing2021,12,4: | 0 |
| 4 | The Occurence of Gastrointestinal Helminths in Slaughtered Cattle in Azare, North-East Nigeria显示文摘A Cross-sectional Study was carried out to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal(G.I.)helminths parasites in slaughtered cattle at Azare abattoir,Katagum Local Government Area,Bauchi State,North-Eastern Nigeria.One hundred and twenty faecal samples were examined using the floatation and sedimentation method.Out of the total samples tested,G.I.helminths infections were detected in 62 samples tested,giving an overall prevalence of 51.6%.Class nematodes are the most diverse class(56.5%),followed by trematodes(35.5%),while cestodes are the least prevalent(8.1%).There was a statistically significant difference in G.I.helminths’prevalence among different classes(p<0.05).Concerning sex and age,there was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence rate of G.I.helminths infection affecting the cattle(p>0.05).The Red Bororo breeds had the highest prevalence of 75%,while the least was recorded in White Fulani and Sokoto Gudali,40%each.There was a statistically significant difference in G.I helminth infection’s prevalence rate to breed(p<0.05).This study revealed that Fasciola spp.(15%)is the most prevalent G.I.helminths parasites detected,followed by Oesophagostomum spp(11.7%);Haemonchus spp.(9.2%);Strongyloides spp.(8.3%),Schistosoma spp.(3.3%);and Moniezia spp.(1.67%).Our findings from the present study revealed a high prevalence of G.I.helminths species affecting cattle in Azare,North-East Nigeria.Therefore,there is a great need for proper advocacy on appropriate management,regular deworming practices,and improved cattle hygiene to boost animal production.This will help in curbing significant loss to Nigeria’s economy and the world in general. | Musa Umar Bashir Mohammed Abubakar Haladu Ali Gagman Abubakar Sadiq Yusuf | 2021 | Journal of Zoological Research2021,3,1: | 0 |
