| 1 | In vitro total phenolics,flavonoids contents and antioxidant activity of essential oil,various organic extracts from the leaves of tropical medicinal plant Tetrastigma from Sabah显示文摘Objective:To detect the in vitro total phenolics,flavonoids contents and antioxidant activity of essential oil,various organic extracts from the leaves of tropical medicinal plant Tetrastigma from Sabah.Methods:The dry powder leaves of Tetrastigma were extracted with different organic solvent such as hexane.ethyl acetate,chloroform,butanol and aqueous methanol.The total phenolic and total flavonoids contents of the essential oil and various organic extracts such as hexane,ethyl acetate,chloroform,butanol and aqueous ethanol were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method and the assayed antioxidant activity was determined in vitro models such as antioxidant capacity by radical scavenging activity usingα,α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method.Results:The total phenolic contents of the essential oil and different extracts as gallic acid equivalents were found to be highest in methanol extract(386.22 mg/g) followed by ethyl acetate(190.89 mg/g).chloroform(175.89 mg/g).hexane(173.44 mg/g).and Imtanol extract (131.72 mg/g) and the phenolic contents not detected in essential oil.The antioxidant capacity of the essential oil and different extracts as ascorbic acid standard was in the order of methanol extract>ethyl acetate extract>chloroform>butanol>hexane extract also the antioxidant activity was not detected in essential oil.Conclusions:The findings show that the extent of antioxidant activity of the essential oil and all extracts are in accordance with the amount of phenolics present in that extract.Leaves of Tetrastigma being rich in phenolics may provide a good source of antioxidant. | M Amzad Hossain Muhammad Dawood Shah Charles Gnanaraj Muhammad Iqbal | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,9: | 9 |
| 2 | Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of various organic extracts of Merremia borneensis from Sabah显示文摘Objective:To analyse the chemical composition of different extracts of Merremia borneensis(M. borneensis) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS).Methods:The dried leaves powder was extracted with methanol at room temperature by using Soxhlet extractor.Methanol crude extracts of M.borneensis were extrastel with hexane,chloroform,ethyl acetate and butanol. Results:Qualitative analyses of various organic crude extracts showed that majority of these are flavonoids,terpeniods,alkaloids and glycosides.Most of the identified compounds by GCMS are biologically important.Further the M.borneensii leaf possesses certain characteristics that can be ascribed to cultivation on a domestic plantation.Conclusions:The suitable extracts for respective compounds can be chosen on the basis of above GC-MS analysis.All the major compounds from different extracts are biologically active molecules.Thus the identification of a good number of compounds from various extracts M.borneensis might have some ecological significance. | M Amzad Hossain Muhammad Dawood Shah Mahyar Sakari | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,8: | 1 |

| 8 | In-vitro and in-vivo pharmacological screening of Iris albicans显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the anti-oxidant,enzyme inhibition,anti-pyretic,anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic activities of Iris albicans.METHODS:Anti-oxidant assay was evaluated using DPPH(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl)radical scavenging and ABTS(2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)inhibitory protocol while enzyme inhibitory assay was evaluated by lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitory protocol respectively.Antipyretic,anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic potential was evaluated using brewer's yeast induced pyrexia,carrageenan induced paw edema and streptozocin induced diabetes protocols respectively.Serum biochemical parameters were monitored for the period of study.RESULTS:The anti-oxidant activity of chloroform fraction of Iris albicans showed the highest scavenging potential against DPPH and ABTS while the maximum inhibitory action recorded against lipo-oxygenase and cyclooxygenase-2 enzymes was shown by n-hexane and chloroform fractions respectively.The anti-pyretic potential of the crude methanolic extract showed dose dependent activity in reducing pyrexia,thereby when the dose was increased the anti-pyretic effect was also enhanced.The anti-inflammatory action of the crude methanolic extract administered at the dose of 300 mg/kg was significant at 1 h after its administration,which was found maintained up to 5 h.Similarly the anti-diabetic effect of the crude methanolic extract administered at the dose of 200 and 300 mg/kg was noted highly significant at day 6 and was found well maintained throughout the study time period up to 10 days.Significant(P<0.001)improvement appeared in hemoglobin,protein,cholesterol,triglycerides,urea,creatinine,HDL and LDL of extract treated diabetic mice.CONCLUSION:From this data it could be concluded that Iris albicans have significant anti-oxidant,enzyme inhibition,ant-pyretic,anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic potential. | Dawood Kamal Roohullah Fazle Rabbi Attiqa Naz Muhammad Bilal | 2022 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2022,42,1: | 0 |
