1Piper sarmentosum as an antioxidant on oxidative stress in human umbilical vein endothelial cells induced by hydrogen peroxide显示文摘Endothelial cell death due to increased reactive oxygen species(ROS) may contribute to the initial endothelial injury,which promotes atherosclerotic lesion formation.Piper sarmentosum(PS),a natural product,has been shown to have an antioxidant property,which is hypothesized to inhibit production of ROS and prevent cell injury.Thus,the present study was designed to determine the effects of PS on the hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)-induced oxidative cell damage in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs).In this experiment,HUVECs were obtained by collagenase perfusion of the large vein in the umbilical cord and cultured in medium M200 supplemented with low serum growth supplementation(LSGS).HUVECs were treated with various concentrations of H2O2(0-1000 μmol/L) and it was observed that 180 μmol/L H2O2 reduced cell viability by 50% as denoted by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay.Using the above concentration as the positive control,the H2O2-induced HUVECs were concomitantly treated with various concentrations(100,150,250 and 300 μg/ml) of three different extracts(aqueous,methanol and hexane) of PS.Malondialdehyde(MDA),superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT) and glutathione peroxidase(GPX) levels showed a significant increase(P<0.05) in HUVECs compared to the negative control.However,PS extracts showed a protective effect on HUVECs from H2O2-induced cell apoptosis with a significant reduction in MDA,SOD,CAT and GPX levels(P<0.05).Furthermore,PS had exhibited ferric reducing antioxidant power with its high phenolic content.Hence,it was concluded that PS plays a beneficial role in reducing oxidative stress in H2O2-induced HUVECs.Abdul Hamid HAFIZAH Zakaria ZAITON Amom ZULKHAIRI Adenan MOHD ILHAM Megat Mohd Nordin NOR ANITA Abdullah Mahdy ZALEHA 2010Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2010,11,5:13
2Acid Blue 25 adsorption on base treated Shorea dasyphylla sawdust:Kinetic,isotherm,thermodynamic and spectroscopic analysis显示文摘The potential of base treated Shorea dasyphylla(BTSD) sawdust for Acid Blue 25(AB 25) adsorption was investigated in a batch adsorption process.Various physiochemical parameters such as pH,stirring rate,dosage,concentration,contact time and temperature were studied.The adsorbent was characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer,scanning electron microscope and Brunauer,Emmett and Teller analysis.The optimum conditions for AB 25 adsorption were pH 2,stirring rate 500 r/min,adsorbent dosage 0.10 g and contact time 60 min.The pseudo second-order model showed the best conformity to the kinetic data.The equilibrium adsorption of AB 25 was described by Freundlich and Langmuir,with the latter found to agree well with the isotherm model.The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of BTSD was 24.39 mg/g at 300 K,estimated from the Langmuir model.Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy,enthalpy and entropy were determined.It was found that AB 25 adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic.Megat Ahmad Kamal Megat Hanafiah Wan Saime Wan Ngah Shahira Hilwani Zolkafly Lee Ching Teong Zafri Azran Abdul Majid 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,2:3
3Sequestration of toxic Pb(Ⅱ) ions by chemically treated rubber(Hevea brasiliensis) leaf powder显示文摘Rubber leaf powder(an agricultural waste) was treated with potassium permanganate followed by sodium carbonate and its performance in the removal of Pb(Ⅱ) ions from aqueous solution was evaluated.The interactions between Pb(Ⅱ) ions and functional groups on the adsorbent surface were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy,scanning electron microscopy(SEM) coupled with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDX).The effects of several important parameters which can affect adsorption capacity such as pH,adsorbent dosage,initial lead concentration and contact time were studied.The optimum pH range for lead adsorption was 4-5.Even at very low adsorbent dosage of 0.02 g,almost 100% of Pb(Ⅱ) ions(23 mg/L) could be removed.The adsorption capacity was also dependent on lead concentration and contact time,and relatively a short period of time(60-90 min) was required to reach equilibrium.The equilibrium data were analyzed with Langmuir,Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms.Based on Langmuir model,the maximum adsorption capacity of lead was 95.3 mg/g.Three kinetic models including pseudo first-order,pseudo second-order and Boyd were used to analyze the lead adsorption process,and the results showed that the pseudo second-order fitted well with correlation coefficients greater than 0.99.Megat Hanafiah Megat Ahmad Kamal Wan Mat Khalir Wan Khaima Azira Mohamed Kasmawati Zakaria Haslizaidi Wan Ngah Wan Saime 2010Journal of Environmental Sciences2010,22,2:3

8Ballistic impact properties of woven bamboo-woven E-glass-unsaturated polyester hybrid composites显示文摘In this study, a laminated woven bamboo/woven E glass/unsaturated polyester composite is developed to combat a ballistic impact from bullet under shooting test. The aim of this study is to understand the fundamental effects of the woven bamboo arrangement towards increasing ballistic resistance properties. The work focusses on the ballistic limit test known as NIJ V50, which qualifies materials to be registered for use in combat armor panels. The results show that the composites withstood 482.5 m/s ± 5 limit of bullet velocity, satisfying the NIJ test at level II.
