| 1 | A new oral formulation for the release of sodium butyrate in the ileo-cecal region and colon显示文摘AIM: To develop a new formulation with hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose and Shellac coating for extended and selective delivery of butyrate in the ileo-caecal region and colon. METHODS: One-gram sodium butyrate coated tablets containing 13C-butyrate were orally administered to 12 healthy subjects and 12 Crohn's disease patients and the rate of 13C-butyrate absorption was evaluated by 13CO2 breath test analysis for eight hours. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (500 mg) was co-administered as a biomarker of oro-ileal transit time to determine also the site of release and absorption of butyrate by the time of its serum maximum concentration. RESULTS: The coated formulation delayed the 13C-butyrate release by 2-3 h with respect to the uncoated tablets. Sodium butyrate was delivered in the intestine of all subjects and a more variable transit time was found in Crohn's disease patients than in healthy subjects. The variability of the peak 13CO2 in the kinetic release of butyrate was explained by the inter-subject variability in transit time. However, the coating chosen ensured an efficient release of the active compound even in patients with a short transit time. CONCLUSION: Simultaneous evaluation of breath 13CO2 and tauroursodeoxycholic acid concentration- time curves has shown that the new oral formulation consistently releases sodium butyrate in the ileo-cecal region and colon both in healthy subjects and Crohn's disease patients with variable intestinal transit time. | 2 | Colorectal cancer and 18FDG-PET/CT:What about adding the T to the N parameter in loco-regional staging?显示文摘AIM:To evaluate whether FDG-positron emission tomography(PET)/computed tomography(CT)may be an accurate technique in the assessment of the T stage in patients with colorectal cancer.METHODS:Thirty four consecutive patients(20 men and 14 women;mean age:63 years)with a histologically proven diagnosis of colorectal adenocarcinoma and scheduled for surgery in our hospital were enrolled in this study.All patients underwent FDG-PET/CT preoperatively.The primary tumor site and extent were evaluated on PET/CT images.Colorectal wall invasion was analysed according to a modified T classification that considers only three stages(≤T2,T3,T4).Assessment of accuracy was carried out using 95%confidence intervals for T.RESULTS:Thirty five/37(94.6%)adenocarcinomas were identified and correctly located on PET/CT images.PET/CT correctly staged the T of 33/35 lesions identified showing an accuracy of 94.3%(95%CI:87%-100%).All T1,T3 and T4 lesions were correctly staged,while two T2 neoplasms were overstated as T3.CONCLUSION:Our data suggest that FDG-PET/CT may be an accurate modality for identifying primary tumor and defining its local extent in patients with colorectal cancer. | Pier Paolo Mainenti Delfina Iodice Sabrina Segreto Giovanni Storto Mario Magliulo Giovanni Domenico De Palma Marco Salvatore Leonardo Pace | 2011 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,11: | 5 |

| 4 | Influence of earthquake direction on the seismic response of irregular plan RC frame buildings显示文摘The nonlinear response of structures is usually evaluated by considering two accelerograms acting simultaneously along the orthogonal directions. In this study, the infl uence of the earthquake direction on the seismic response of building structures is examined. Three multi-story RC buildings, representing a very common structural typology in Italy, are used as case studies for the evaluation. They are, respectively, a rectangular plan shape, an L plan shape and a rectangular plan shape with courtyard buildings. Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses are performed by considering different seismic levels, characterized by peak ground acceleration on stiff soil equal to 0.35 g, 0.25 g and 0.15 g. Nonlinear dynamic analyses are carried out by considering twelve different earthquake directions, and rotating the direction of both the orthogonal components by 30° for each analysis(from 0° to 330°). The survey is carried out on the L plan shape structure. | 5 | Divergent apparent temperature sensitivity of terrestrial ecosystem respiration显示文摘Aims Recent studies revealed convergent temperature sensitivity of ecosys-tem respiration(Re)within aquatic ecosystems and between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.We do not know yet whether various terres-trial ecosystems have consistent or divergent temperature sensitivity.Here,we synthesized 163 eddy covariance flux sites across the world and examined the global variation of the apparent activation energy(Ea),which characterizes the apparent temperature sensitivity of and its interannual variability(IAV)as well as their controlling factors.Methods We used carbon fluxes and meteorological data across FLUXNET sites to calculate mean annual temperature,tempera-ture range,precipitation,global radiation,potential radiation,gross primary productivity and Re by averaging the daily values over the years in each site.Furthermore,we analyzed the sites with>8 years data to examine the IAV of Ea and calculated the standard deviation of Ea across years at each site to character-ize IAV.Important Findings The results showed a widely global variation of Ea,with significantly lower values in the tropical and subtropical areas than in temperate and boreal areas,and significantly higher values in grasslands and wetlands than that in deciduous broadleaf forests and evergreen for-ests.Globally,spatial variations of Ea were explained by changes in temperature and an index of water availability with differing contribution of each explaining variable among climate zones and biomes.IAV and the corresponding coefficient of variation of Ea decreased with increasing latitude,but increased with radiation and corresponding mean annual temperature.The revealed patterns in the spatial and temporal variations of Ea and its controlling factors indicate divergent temperature sensitivity of Re,which could help to improve our predictive understanding of Re in response to climate change. | Bing Song Shuli Niu Ruisen Luo Yiqi Luo Jiquan Chen Guirui Yu Janusz Olejnik Georg Wohlfahrt Gerard Kiely Asko Noormets Leonardo Montagnani Alessandro Cescatti Vincenzo Magliulo Beverly Elizabeth Law Magnus Lund Andrej Varlagin Antonio Raschi Matthias Peichl Mats BNilsson Lutz Merbold | 2014 | Journal of Plant Ecology2014,7,5: | 2 |
