| 1 | Future challenges in the in vitro and in vivo evaluation of biomaterial biocompatibility显示文摘As the science and engineering of biomaterials continues to expand with increased emphasis on the development of nanomaterials and tissue engineering scaffolds,emphasis also must be placed on appropriate and adequate approaches to the in vivo and in vitro evaluation of biomaterial biocompatibility/biological response evaluation.This article presents six topic areas that should be addressed by investigators as they move forward in the development of new systems for regenerative medicine.Most certainly,there are other areas that require attention to detail and a more complete understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of various experimental approaches to biomaterial/biological response evaluation.The small number of issues addressed in this article is only meant to bring to the attention of prospective investigators and authors,the importance of the development of adequate and appropriate evaluation techniques that address the unique features of biomaterials utilized in the development of new medical devices. | James M.Anderson | 2016 | Regenerative Biomaterials2016,3,2: | 7 |
| 2 | Patients direct costs to undergo TB diagnosis显示文摘Background:A major impediment to the treatment of TB is a diagnostic process that requires multiple visits.Descriptions of patient costs associated with diagnosis use different protocols and are not comparable.Methods:We aimed to describe the direct costs incurred by adults attending TB diagnostic centres in four countries and factors associated with expenditure for diagnosis.Surveys of 2225 adults attending smear-microscopy centres in Nigeria,Nepal,Ethiopia and Yemen.Adults>18 years with cough>2 weeks were enrolled prospectively.Direct costs were quantified using structured questionnaires.Patients with costs>75^(th) quartile were considered to have high expenditure(cases)and compared with patients with costs<75^(th) quartile to identify factors associated with high expenditure.Results:The most significant expenses were due to clinic fees and transport.Most participants attended the centres with companions.High expenditure was associated with attending with company,residing in rural areas/other towns and illiteracy.Conclusions:The costs incurred by patients are substantial and share common patterns across countries.Removing user fees,transparent charging policies and reimbursing clinic expenses would reduce the poverty-inducing effects of direct diagnostic costs.In locations with limited resources,support could be prioritised for those most at risk of high expenditure;those who are illiterate,attend the service with company and rural residents. | Rachel M.Anderson de Cuevas Lovett Lawson Najla Al-Sonboli Nasher Al-Aghbari Isabel Arbide Jeevan B.Sherchand Emenyonu E.Nnamdi Abraham Aseffa Mohammed A.Yassin Saddiq T.Abdurrahman Joshua Obasanya Oladimeji Olanrewaju Daniel Datiko Sally J.Theobald Andrew Ramsay S.Bertel Squire Luis E.Cuevas | 2016 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2016,5,1: | 1 |
| 3 | Interrelationship of soil moisture and temperature to sylvatic plague cycle among prairie dogs in the Western United States显示文摘Plague,caused by Yersinia pestis,is a flea-borne disease that is endemic in areas throughout the world due to its successful maintenance in a sylvatic cycle,mainly in areas with temperate climates.Burrowing rodents are thought to play a key role in the enzootic maintenance as well as epizootic outbreaks of plague.In the United States,prairie dogs(Cynomys),rodents(Muridae),and ground squirrels(Spermophilus)are susceptible to infection and are parasitized by fleas that transmit plague.In particular,prairie dogs can experience outbreaks that rapidly spread,which can lead to extirpation of colonies.A number of ecological parameters,including climate,are associated with these epizootics.In this study,we asked whether soil parameters,primarily moisture and temperature,are associated with outbreaks of plague in black-tailed prairie dogs and Gunnison’s prairie dogs in the Western United States,and at what depth these associations were apparent.We collected publicly available county-level information on the occurrence of population declines or colony extirpation,while historical soil data was collected from SCAN and USCRN stations in counties and states where prairie dogs have been located.The analysis suggests that soil moisture at lower depths correlates with colony die-offs,in addition to temperature near the surface,with key differences within the landscape ecology that impact the occurrence of plague.Overall,the model suggests that the burrow environment may play a significant role in the epizootic spread of disease amongst black-tailed and Gunnison’s prairie dogs. | Cassandra D.PAULING Deborah L.FINKE Deborah M.ANDERSON | 2021 | Integrative Zoology2021,16,6: | 1 |
| 4 | Lactosylated N-Alkyl polyethylenimine coated iron oxide nanoparticles induced autophagy in mouse dendritic cells显示文摘Dendritic cell(DC)-based vaccines have shown promising therapeutic results in cancer and some immune disorders.It is critical to track in vivo migration behaviours of DCs and monitor the whole process dynamically and non-invasively.Superparamagnetic iron oxide(SPIO)nanoparticles are chosen for DC labelling under magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)because of their proven biosafety as contrast agents.However,when used for cell labelling,sensitive biological indicators such as cell autophagy may be helpful to better understand the process and improve the probe design.Here,lactosylated N-Alkyl polyethylenimine coated SPIO nanoparticles are used for DC labelling.This probe shows satisfactory cell labelling efficiency and low cytotoxicity.In this study,autophagy was used as a key factor to understand how DCs react to nanoparticles after labelling.Our results demonstrate that the nanoparticles can induce protective autophagy in DCs,as inhibition of the autophagy flux could lead to cell death.Meanwhile,the nanoparticles induced autophagy could promote DC maturation which is an essential process for its migration and antigen presentation.Autophagy induced DC maturation is known to enhance the vaccine functions of DCs,therefore,our results suggest that beyond the MRI tracking ability,this probe might enhance therapeutic immune activation as well. | Taipeng Shen Wencheng Zhu Li Yang Li Liu Rongrong Jin Jimei Duan James M.Anderson Hua Ai | 2018 | Regenerative Biomaterials2018,5,3: | 1 |

| 14 | Impact of single annual treatment and four-monthly treatment for hookworm and Ascaris lumbricoides,and factors associated with residual infection among Kenyan school children显示文摘Background:School-based deworming is widely implemented in various countries to reduce the burden of soil-transmitted helminths(STHs),however,the frequency of drug administration varies in different settings.In this study,we compared the impact of a single annual treatment and 4-monthly treatment over a follow-up among Kenyan school children,and investigated the factors associated with residual infection.Methods:We performed a secondary analysis of data from a randomized trial investigating whether deworming for STHs alters risk of acquiring malaria.Children received either a single treatment or 4-monthly albendazole treatments were followed longitudinally from February 2014 to October 2014.The relative impact of treatment and factors associated with residual infections were investigated using mixed-effects regression models.Predisposition to infection was assessed based on Spearman’s rank and Kendall’s Tau correlation coefficients.Results:In the 4-monthly treatment group,the proportion of children infected with hookworm decreased from 59.9 to 5.7%,while Ascaris lumbricoides infections dropped from 55.7 to 6.2%.In the single treatment group,hookworm infections decreased over the same time period from 58.7 to 18.3%(12.6%absolute difference in reduction,95%CI:8.9-16.3%),and A.lumbricoides from 56.7 to 23.3%(17.1%absolute difference in reduction,95%CI:13.1-21.1%).There was strong evidence for predisposition to both STH types.Residual hookworm infection among children on 4-monthly treatment were associated with male sex and baseline nutritional status,whereas A.lumbricoides infection was associated with individual and school-level infection at baseline,latrine cleanliness at schools.Conclusions:This study found that 4-monthly treatment w more effective than single annual treatment.Repeated treatments led to dramatic reductions in the intensities of STHs,but did not completely clear infections among school children in Kenya,a presumed reflection of reinfection in a setting where there is ongoing transmission. | Stella Kepha Charles S.Mwandawiro Roy M.Anderson Rachel L.Pullan Fred Nuwaha Jorge Cano Sammy M.Njenga Maurice R.Odiere Elizabeth Allen Simon J.Brooker Birgit Nikolay | 2017 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1: | 0 |
