7Heat advection and forced convection in a lattice code–Implementation and geothermal applications显示文摘A three-dimensional thermo-hydro-mechanical numerical model has recently been enhanced with thermal capabilities to study the response of geothermal reservoirs to stimulation and production.In this paper,we present an effort to consider three relevant thermal mechanisms in an existing lattice code initially designed for hydraulic fracturing:a)thermal advection in the fluid;b)heat transfer by forced convection from the rock to the fluid;and c)accurate thermal conduction in the rock matrix considering the thermal boundary layer effect.A numerical implementation of the new coupled advection-forced convection logic as well as the coupling with the existing conduction logic in the commercial code XSite is summarized.The numerical solution is compared to analytical solutions for simple simulation cases.The new simulation capability is applied in a large-scale geothermal example to illustrate its performance.Christine Detournay Branko Damjanac Maurilio Torres Peter Cundall Laryssa Ligocki Ivan Gil 2022Rock Mechanics Bulletin2022,1,1:1
8Main visual symptoms associated with refractive errors and spectacle need in a Brazilian population显示文摘·AIM: To determine the main visual symptoms in a Brazilian population sample, associated to refractive errors(REs) and spectacle need to suggest priorities in preventive programs.·METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in nine counties of the southeast region of Brazil, using a systematic sampling of households, between March 2004 and July 2005. The population was defined as individuals aged between 1 and 96 y, inhabitants of 3600 residences to be evaluated and 3012 households were included,corresponding to 8010 subjects considered for participation in the survey, of whom 7654 underwent ophthalmic examinations. The individuals were evaluated according their demographic data, eye complaints and eye examination including the RE and the need to prescribe spectacles according to age. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software package and descriptive analysis using 95% confidence intervals(P<0.05).· RESULTS: The main symptom detected was asthenopia, most frequent in the 2ndand 3rddecades of life, with a significant decline after the 4thdecade.Astigmatism was the RE most associated with asthenopia. Reduced near vision sight was more frequent in those ≥40y with a progressive decline thereafter.Spectacles were most frequently required in subjects of≥40 years of age.·CONCLUSION: The main symptom related to the vision was asthenopia and was associated to astigmatism. The greatest need for spectacles prescription occurred after40's, mainly to correct near vision. Subjects of ≥40years old were determined to be at high risk of uncorrected REs. 9Which metrics drive macroinvertebrate drift in neotropical sky island streams?显示文摘Despite long-standing interest,the mechanisms driving aquatic macroinvertebrate drift in tropical streams remain poorly understood.Therefore,the objective of this study was to evaluate which environmental metrics drive macroinvertebrate drift in neotropical sky island streams.We evaluated whether altitude,the abundance of food resources,and variations in water quality influenced macroinvertebrate drift density,diversity,richness,and functional feeding groups.An hypothesis was developed to test whether increased altitude,lower food availability(particulate organic matter),and discharge would increase the density,taxonomic richness,and diversity of drifting invertebrates.Nine headwater stream sites were sampled in the rainy and dry seasons in the Espinhaço Meridional Mountain Range(EMMR)of southeast Brazil.Samples were collected using drift nets deployed from 5:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m.The abundance of food resources was assessed through estimates of coarse(CPOM)and fine(FPOM)particulate organic matter,and primary producers.CPOM availability was an important explanatory variable for Gathering-Collectors and Scrapers,Altitude was important for Shredders and Predators,and Filtering-Collectors were linked to water discharge,suggesting that functional group drift masses were linked to different ecosystem components.Water temperature,conductivity,dissolved oxygen,current velocity,FPOM biomass and microbasin elevation range exerted little influence on macroinvertebrate drift.Regarding taxa composition,this study also found that Baetidae and Leptohyphidae(Ephemeroptera)and Chironomidae and Simuliidae(Diptera)were the most abundant groups drifting.Marcos Callisto Diego M.P.Castro Marden S.Linares Laryssa K.Carvalho Jose E.L.Barbosa Robert M.Hughes 2023Water Biology and Security2023,2,1:0
10Effects of N-acetylcysteine on growth,viability and reactive oxygen species levels in small antral follicles cultured in vitro显示文摘Objective:To investigate the effects of different concentrations of N-acetylcysteine on follicular growth and morphology,as well as on viability,levels of reactive oxygen species(ROS)and meiotic progression of oocytes from in vitro cultured bovine early antral follicles.Methods:Isolated early antral follicles(about 500μm)were cultured in TCM-199+alone or supplemented with 1.0,5.0 or 25.0 mM N-acetylcysteine at 38.5℃with 5%CO_(2) for 8 days.Follicle diameters were evaluated at day 0,4 and 8 of culture.At the end of culture,the levels of ROS,chromatin configuration and viability(calcein-AM and ethidium homodimer-1 staining)were investigated in the cumulus-oocyte complexes.Comparisons of follicle diameters between treatments were performed.Data on percentages of morphologically normal follicles,growth rates and chromatin configuration in different treatments were compared.Results:An increase in follicular diameters after culture in all treatments was observed,except for follicles cultured with 25.0 mM N-acetylcysteine.Fluorescence microscopy showed that oocytes cultured in all treatments were stained positively with calcein AM,and that 5.0 mM N-acetylcysteine reduced fluorescence for ethidium homodimer-1.Intracellular levels of ROS in oocytes from follicles cultured with 1.0 mM N-acetylcysteine showed a significant reduction compared to other treatments.The presence of N-acetylcysteine in culture medium did not influence the rates of oocyte at the germinal vesicle stage.Conclusions:N-acetylcysteine at concentrations of 1.0 and 5.0 mM reduces ROS levels and staining for ethidium homodimer-1 in in vitro cultured follicles,respectively,while 25.0 mM N-acetylcysteine decreases follicular growth and the percentages of continuously growing follicles.Efigênia B.Cordeiro Bianca R.Silva Laís R.F.M.Paulino Pedro A.A.Barroso Laryssa G.Barrozo Miguel F.de Lima Neto JoséR.V.Silva 2023Asian pacific Journal of Reproduction2023,12,1:0
