| 1 | Subchronic Oral Cadmium Exposure Exerts both Stimulatory and Suppressive Effects on Pulmonary Inflammation/Immune Reactivity in Rats显示文摘Objective The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of oral cadmium(Cd) ingestion on the pulmonary immune response. Methods Determination of Cd content in lungs and histopathological evaluation of the tissue was performed in rats following 30-day oral Cd administration(5 and 50 mg/L). Antioxidant enzyme defense(superoxide dismutase and catalase), cell infiltration, and production of tumor necrosis factor(TNF) and interferon(IFN)-γ, as well as the activity of myeloperoxidase(MPO), nitric oxide(NO), and various cytokines [interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-17] were investigated. Results Cd caused tissue damage and cell infiltration in the lungs, and this damage was more pronounced at higher doses. Cd deposition resulted in lung inflammation characterized by a dose-dependent IL-1β increase in lung homogenates, increased TNF levels at both doses, and IL-6 stimulation at low doses with inhibition observed at higher doses. Cd exerted differential effects on lung leukocytes isolated by enzyme digestion, and these effects were characterized by a lack of change in the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, an inhibition of IL-1β and TNF, and stimulation of MPO and IFN-γ. The higher capacity of Cd-exposed lung cells to respond to the opportunistic pathogen Staphylococcus epidermidis was demonstrated in vitro. | 2 | GDF-15 Level Correlates with CMKLR1 and VEGF-A in Tumor-free Margin in Colorectal Cancer显示文摘Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide,responsible for over 880000 deaths each year.Growth/differentiation factor 15(GDF-15)is reported to be a promising diagnostic and prognostic factor in CRC.It induces pleiotropic effects in tumor cells:proliferation,sternness,invasion and metastasis.Some studies indicate that GDF-15 may stimulate angiogenesis in malignant neoplasms.However,it has not been investigated in CRC yet.The aim of our study was to determine the level of GDF-15 and the concentrations of hypoxia-inducible factor-la(HIF-1α),VEGF-A and chemokine-like receptor 1(CMKLR1)in tumor and margin specimens of CRC in relation to histological grade and TNM staging.The study comprised 33 samples of tumor and margin tissues obtained from CRC patients.To assess the concentration of GDF-15,HIF-1α,VEGF-A and CMKLR1,commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)kits were used.We found significantly increased levels of GDF-15 and CMKLR1 in tumor tissue compared to margin tissue and higher concentrations of HIF-1α and VEGF-A in margin tissue than in tumor tissue.The levels of GDF-15 and HIF-1α were significantly correlated with VEGF-A and CMKLR1 in margin tissue.In CRC,the increased level of GDF-15 might stimulate angiogenesis through upregulation of HIF-1α,VEGF A and CMKLR1 expression.Our study is the first one to reveal the correlation between the levels of GDF-15 and CMKLR1 in CRC.The elevated levels of HIF-1α and VEGF-A in tumor-free margin tissues suggest that noncancer cells in the tumor microenvironment are an important source of proangiogenic factors. | Sylwia Mielcarska Kamila Stopifnska Miriam Dawidowicz Agnieszka Kula Pawel Kicamer Alicja Prawdric Senkowska Ewa Nowakowska Zajde Katarzyna Walkiewicz Dariusz Waniczek Elzbieta Swietochowska | 2021 | Current Medical Science2021,41,3: | 3 |
| 3 | Can baseline ML Flow test results predict leprosy reactions? An investigation in a cohort of patients enrolled in the uniform multidrug therapy clinical trial for leprosy patients in Brazil显示文摘Background:The predictive value of the serology to detection of IgM against the Mycobacterium leprae-derived phenolic glycolipid-I/PGL-I to identify leprosy patients who are at higher risk of developing reactions remains controversial.Whether baseline results of the ML Flow test can predict leprosy reactions was investigated among a cohort of patients enrolled in The Clinical Trial for Uniform Multidrug Therapy for Leprosy Patients in Brazil(U-MDT/CT-BR).Methods:This was a descriptive study focusing on the main clinical manifestations of leprosy patients enrolled in the U-MDT/CT-BR from March 2007 to February 2012 at two Brazilian leprosy reference centers.For research purposes,753 leprosy patients were categorized according to a modified Ridley-Jopling(R&J)classification and according to the development of leprosy reactions(reversal reaction/RR and erythema nodosum leprosum/ENL),and whether they had a positive or negative bacillary index/BI.Results:More than half of the patients(55.5%)reported leprosy reaction:18.3%(138/753)had a RR and 5.4%(41/753)had ENL.Leprosy reactions were more frequent in the first year following diagnosis,as seen in 27%(205/753)of patients,while 19%(142/753)developed reactions during subsequent follow-up.Similar frequencies of leprosy reactions and other clinical manifestations were observed in paucibacillary(PB)and multibacillary(MB)leprosy patients treated with U-MDT and regular MDT(R-MDT)(P=0.43 and P=0.61,respectively).Compared with PB patients,leprosy reactions were significantly more frequent in MB patients with a high BI,and more patients developed RR than ENL.However,RR and neuritis were also reported in patients with a negative BI.At baseline,the highest rate of ML Flow positivity was observed in patients with a positive BI,especially those who developed ENL,followed by patients who had neuritis and RR.Among reaction-free patients,81.9%were ML Flow positive,however,the differences were not statistically significant compared to reactional patients(P=0.45).Conclusions:MB and PB patients treated with R-MDT and U-MDT showed similar frequencies of RR and other clinical manifestations.Positive ML Flow tests were associated with MB leprosy and BI positivity.However,ML Flow test results at baseline showed limited sensitivity and specificity for predicting the development of leprosy reactions. | Emerith Mayra Hungria Regiane Morillas Oliveira Gerson Oliveira Penna Lúcio Cartaxo Aderaldo Maria Araci de Andrade Pontes Rossilene Cruz Heitor de SáGonçalves Maria Lúcia Fernandes Penna Ligia Regina Franco Sansigolo Kerr Mariane Martins de Araújo Stefani Samira Bührer-Sékula | 2016 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2016,5,1: | 2 |

The removal of these pollutants by efficient method has received worldwide concern in recent past. A new Fe_3O_4–Cr_2O_3 magnetic nanocomposite was synthesized by wet chemical method under ultrasonic irradiation. Microstructure and morphology of the nanocomposite were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR), and a transmission electron microscope(TEM). Magnetic and optical properties were studied by a vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM) and an ultraviolet–visible(UV–Vis) spectrophotometer respectively.
