| 1 | New generation of multi-scale NWP system (GRAPES):general scientific design显示文摘A new generation of numerical prediction system GRAPES (a short form of Global/Regional Assimilation and PrEdiction System) was set up in China Meteorological Administration (CMA). This paper focuses on the scientific design and preliminary results of the numerical prediction model in GRAPES, including basic idea and strategy of the general scientific design, multi-scale dynamic core, physical package configuration, architecture and parallelization of the codes. A series of numerical experiments using the real data with horizontal resolutions from 10 to 280 km and idealized experiments with very high resolution up to 100 m are conducted, giving encouraging results supporting the multi-scale application of GRAPES. The results of operational implementation of GRAPES model in some NWP centers are also presented with stress at evaluations of the capability to predict the main features of precipitation in China. | 2 | Features of the EAP events on the medium-range evolution process and the mid-and high-latitude Rossby wave activities during the Meiyu period显示文摘In this paper,features for the evolution of the East Asia/Pacific(EAP) events and their association with high-and mid-latitude Rossby waves during the Meiyu period are analyzed on the medium-range time scale.It is shown that life cycles of the positive and negative EAP events cannot be simply regarded as 'mirror' each other.In the upper troposphere,downward propagations of Rossby wave packets both over high-and mid-latitude regions of Eurasian continent and over the Asian jet region are responsible for generating basic patterns of high-and mid-latitude anomaly centers of the events.In this layer,Rossby wave packets also propagate from the mid-latitude anomaly center to the high-latitude one.In the middle and lower troposphere,the formation of the subtropical anomaly center of the event is mainly attributed to the anomalous convective activity in the tropical Pacific warm pool.The northward Rossby wave energy dispersion from this center is favorable to the enhancement and maintenance of the mid-latitude anomaly center in the same layer.Finally,it might be hypothesized that typical features of the positive and negative EAP events in their mature phase result from the interaction between(or phase-locking of) respective anomalous circulations induced both by quasi-zonal Rossby wave packets embedded in upper troposphere westerly and by quasi-meridional Rossby wave packets in the background flow of the East Asian summer monsoon in the middle and lower troposphere. | BUEH Cholaw SHI Ning JI LiRen WEI Jie TAO ShiYan | 2008 | Chinese Science Bulletin2008,53,4: | 23 |
| 3 | Verification of GRAPES unified global and regional numerical weather prediction model dynamic core显示文摘During the past few years, most of the new developed numerical weather prediction models adopt the strategy of multi-scale technique. Therefore, China Meteorological Administration has devoted to developing a new generation of global and regional multi-scale model since 2003. In order to validate the performance of the GRAPES (Global and Regional Assimilation and PrEdiction System) model both for its scientific design and program coding, a suite of idealized tests has been proposed and conducted, which includes the density flow test, three-dimensional mountain wave and the cross-polar flow test. The density flow experiment indicates that the dynamic core has the ability to simulate the fine scale nonlinear flow structures and its transient features. While the three-dimensional mountain wave test shows that the model can reproduce the horizontal and vertical propagation of internal gravity waves quite well. Cross-polar flow test demonstrates the rationality of both for the semi-Lagrangian departure point calculation and the discretization of the model near the poles. | 4 | Anomalous activity of East Asian winter monsoon and the tropical Pacific SSTA显示文摘The relationship between the anomalous East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) activity and the tropical Pacific SST anomalies has been identified using the results of 40-year integration of the IAP CGCM1 model and 10-year observational data, In the strong EAWM year, the western and central Pacific are dominated by positive SST anomalies while the eastern Pacific is negative ones. In the weak EAWM year, the SSTA pattern is quite different and shows El Nio-like SSTanomalies. The strong EAWM activity tends to create extra easterly flow to the east and extra westerly flow to the west of the warm SSTA region over the equatorial western and central Pacific, thus leading to the enhancement of convergence and convection of the flow in this region and favorable to the maintenance and development of such an SSTA pattern. | 5 | Wintertime extreme precipitation event over southern China and its typical circulation features显示文摘This study objectively defined an extreme precipitation event(EPE)over southern China and investigated the associated typical circulation pattern on the intraseasonal time scale.The occurrence of the EPE resulted from the joint operations of anomalous circulations over the subtropics and mid-high latitudes.During the EPE,simultaneous enhancements of the trough over the Bay of Bengal(BBT)and the Western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH)facilitated the abundant water vapor conditions over southern China,whereas the weakened East Asian major trough(EAT)led to a moderate cold air invasion to that region,producing a persistent convergence zone over southern China.Wave train pattern in North Atlantic and Europe may be viewed as precursory signals for the EPE over southern China,and it contributed to the Rossby wave propagation in association with the EPE.These wave packets propagated toward East Asia mainly along the North African-Asian subtropical westerly jet waveguide.Low-frequency disturbances along this waveguide contributed to the enhancement of the BBT and WPSH and the weakening of the EAT,constituting favorable circulation conditions for the EPE. | Haifeng Zong Cholaw Bueh Liren Ji | 2014 | Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,10: | 7 |
