1A numerical optimization of high altitude testing facility for wind tunnel experiments显示文摘High altitude test facilities are required to test the high area ratio nozzles operating at the upper stages of rocket in the nozzle full flow conditions.It is typically achieved by creating the ambient pressure equal or less than the nozzle exit pressure.On average,air/GN2is used as active gas for ejector system that is stored in the high pressure cylinders.The wind tunnel facilities are used for conducting aerodynamic simulation experiments at/under various flow velocities and operating conditions.However,constructing both of these facilities require more laboratory space and expensive instruments.Because of this demerit,a novel scheme is implemented for conducting wind tunnel experiments by using the existing infrastructure available in the high altitude testing(HAT)facility.This article presents the details about the methods implemented for suitably modifying the sub-scale HAT facility to conduct wind tunnel experiments.Hence,the design of nozzle for required area ratio A/A*,realization of test section and the optimized configuration are focused in the present analysis.Specific insights into various rocket models including high thrust cryogenic engines and their holding mechanisms to conduct wind tunnel experiments in the HAT facility are analyzed.A detailed CFD analysis is done to propose this conversion without affecting the existing functional requirements of the HAT facility.J.Bruce Ralphin Rose G.R.Jinu C.J.Brindha 2015Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2015,28,3:7

10Calculation of landslide occurrence probability in Taiwan region under different ground motion conditions显示文摘In this study,Bayesian probability method and machine learning model are used to study the real occurrence probability of earthquake-induced landslide risk in Taiwan region.The analyses were based on the 1999 Taiwan Chi-Chi Earthquake,the largest earthquake in the history in this Region in a hundred years,thus can provide better control on the prediction accuracy of the model.This seismic event has detailed and complete seismic landslide inventories identified by polygons,including 9272 seismic landslide records.Taking into account the real earthquake landslide occurrence area,the difference in landslide area and the non-sliding/sliding sample ratios and other factors,a total of 13,656,000 model training samples were selected.We also considered other seismic landslide influencing factors,including elevation,slope,aspect,topographic wetness index,lithology,distance to fault,peak ground acceleration and rainfall.Bayesian probability method and machine learning model were combined to establish the multi-factor influence of earthquake landslide occurrence model.The model is then applied to the whole Taiwan region using different ground motion peak accelerations(from 0.1 g to 1.0 g with 0.1 g intervals)as a triggering factor to complete the real probability of earthquake landslide map in Taiwan under different peak ground accelerations,and the functional relationship between different Peak Ground Acceleration and their predicted area is obtained.SHAO Xiao-yi XU Chong MA Si-yuan XU Xi-wei J.BRUCE H.Shyus ZHOU Qing 2021Journal of Mountain Science2021,18,4:0
11Dynamic stability characterization of re-entry modules at hypersonic mach numbers显示文摘At the time of re-entry modules entering into the atmosphere from space,a small perturbation introduces dynamic oscillations on the vehicle because of their extreme traveling speed.The dynamic stability characteristics of re-entry modules at hypersonic Mach numbers is of considerable relevance to their initial design.In the present paper,the dynamic stability of blunt cone model about 10◦is examined with wide range of design parameters such as nose bluntness,semi-vertex angle and center of rotation through theoretical and experimental methods.Theoretical approximations are made over a model based on the standard Newtonian theory.Experiments are conducted at 0.25m hypersonic wind tunnel at M=8.3 and the following trends are observed from the experimental analysis.Interestingly,the incremental higher nose bluntness,semi-vertex angle and center of rotation reduce the dynamic stability.At higher hypersonic Mach numbers(M>10),dynamic stability characteristics of the re-entry module are insensitive to the free stream Mach number.However,it is observed that the dynamic stability is increased in proportion to the vibration amplitude at hypersonic speeds.J.Vinoth J.Bruce Ralphin Rose 2017International Journal of Modeling, Simulation, and Scientific Computing2017,8,1:0
12Designation of a new genus Bathymenes for the deep-sea pontoniine shrimps of the 'Periclimenes alcocki species group'(Decapoda,Caridea,Palaemonidae),with a checklist of the species assigned to the genus显示文摘A new genus of the deep-sea pontoniine shrimps,Bathymenes gen. nov.,is established for the 'Periclimenes alcocki species group' of the genus Periclimenes Costa,1844. The new genus is distinguished from other genera of the Pontoniinae by a combination of characters: the posteriormost dorsal rostral tooth remote from other teeth,situated in the epigastric position,cornea usually reduced,the propodus of second pereiopods covered with fine granules,the dactylus of the major second chela being generally flanged,the ambulatory pereiopods with the dactyli being biunguiculate and telson with more than two pairs of dorsolateral spines. The genus is mainly distributed in the tropical to warm-temperate Indo-West Pacific waters at depths greater than 200 m. Fifteen species previously recognized as belonging to the 'P.a lcocki species group' are now placed in Bathymenes gen. nov. 14Experimental and numerical analysis of compressible two-phase flows in a shock tube显示文摘The comparative study on seven equation models with two different six equations modelfor compressible two-phase flow analysis is proposed. The seven equations model isderived for compressible two-phase flow that is in the nonconservation form. In thepresent work, two different six equations model are derived for two pressures, two velocities and single temperature with the derivation of the equation of state. The closingequation for one of the six equations model is energy conservation equation while anotherone is closed by entropy balance equation. The partial differential form of governingequations is hyperbolic and written in the conservative form. At this point, the set ofgoverning equations are derived based on the principle of extended thermodynamics.The method of solving single temperature from both six equation models are simple anddirect solution can be obtained. Numerical simulation has been tried using one of the sixequation models for air–water shock tube problems. Explicit fourth order Runge–Kuttascheme is used with Finite Volume Shock Capturing method for solving the governingequations numerically. The pressure, velocity and volume fraction variations are captured along the shock tube length through flow solver. Experimental work is carried outto magnify the initial stage of liquid injection into a gas. 16Analysis of Bio-inspired Fishbone Based Corrugated Rib for Adaptive Camber Morphing显示文摘Bioinspired active camber morphing is an innovative solution for the aerodynamic performance enhancement of flight vehicles such as Micro Aerial Vehicles(MAVs)and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs).In the present article,a bio-inspired Fish Bone Active Camber(FishBAC)corrugated rib design concept with and without a spine for an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)is proposed.The wing model is composed of multiple corrugated ribs and a splitted spar for connecting each rib.The rib geometry is subjected to static structural analysis using ANSYS Finite Element Analysis(FEA)module under the unit load conditions.The deformation modes are first extracted from the solution of the wind tunnel test and the elastically deformed NACA 4412 profile will be used to perform Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI)studies as a partly coupled analysis.FishBAC corrugated rib with spine design is a stable structure as inspired from nature species that can withstand elastic and inertial loads.Computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulation is performed to compute the coefficient of lift(Cl),coefficient of drag(Cd)at different Angle of Attack(AoA)for a modified NACA 4412 airfoil and the pressure loads acting on the deformed shape is extracted.The Cl obtained for the modified airfoil at lower AoA is about 60–80%higher and the maximum Cl(Clmax)is 62%higher than the baseline airfoil.The Cd of modified airfoil is reduced about 20%at the AoAα=3°as compared with the baseline model.The proposed corrugated rib structure has been successfully 3D printed with Polylactic Acid plus(PLA+)material and the wind tunnel testing is done to validate the Cl,Cd values obtained through CFD simulations and the results are presented.R.Jini Raj J.Bruce Ralphin Rose A.Vasudevan 2023Journal of Bionic Engineering2023,20,3:0
17Performance analysis of lobed nozzle ejectors for high altitude simulation of rocket engines显示文摘Ejectors are used in high altitude testing of rocket engines to create vacuum for simulat-ing the engine test in vacuum conditions.The performance of an ejector plays a vital role in creating vacuum at the exit of the engine nozzle and the nozzle design exit pressure at the time of ignition.Consequently,the performance of ejectors has to be improved to reduce the consumption of active fluid.In this investigation,the performance of an ejector has been improved by changing the exit shear plane of the nozzle.Conventionally,conical nozzles are used for creating the required momentum.Lobes of 4 no’s,6 no’s and 8 numbers for an equivalent area ratio=5.88 are used to increase the shear area.The influence of shear plane variation in the suction pressure is studied by a detailed CFD analysis.J.Bruce Ralphin Rose J.Veni Grace 2014International Journal of Modeling, Simulation, and Scientific Computing2014,5,4:0
