3Effect of intensity and duration of anthropic noises on European mink locomotor activity and fecal cortisol metabolite levels显示文摘Human activities involving noise emission can affect wild animals.European mink was exposed to road noise and human voice playbacks to analyze how sound intensity level and duration of both noises altered the time that individuals were active and if their fecal cortisol metabolite(FCM)levels varied.A Hierarchical Analysis Cluster was performed to establish 2 mink groups with respect to both noise source type:short duration/low intensity(SL)and long duration/high intensity(LH).We performed general linear mixed models to evaluate the variation in locomotor activity duration(s)and FCM(nanogram per gram)levels,respectively.The results showed both road noise and human voices decreased locomotor activity duration in SL more sharply compared with LH,and human voices were the triggers that induced the most pronounced response to both exposure conditions.FCM(ng/g)levels increased in SL compared with LH during road noise while the opposite happened during human voices.Differences based on sex and age of individuals were observed.In conclusion,noise characteristics given by the sound type determined the variations in locomotor activity duration while noise exposure level determined the variations in FCM(ng/g)levels.Attention should be paid to noisy activities(e.g.,recreational activities for visitors in protected natural areas)and loud groups of people to conserve wildlife,especially noise sensitive species.Lorena ORTIZ-JIMENEZ Carlos IGLESIAS-MERCHAN Alba Itzel MARTıNEZ-SALAZAR Isabel BARJA 2022Current Zoology2022,68,6:0
4Stressful living in lower-quality habitats?Body mass,feeding behavior and physiological stress levels in wild wood mouse populations显示文摘Wild populations are continuously subjected to changes in environmental factors that pose different challenges.Body condition and hormones have been commonly used as health indicators due to their potential correlation with fitness.In the present study,we analyzed whether habitats of different quality influenced body mass,food intake and physiological stress levels in wild wood mice(Apodemus sylvaticus).Field work was seasonally carried out in Holm oak woods and pine forests in central Spain.A total of 93 wood mice from 4 different populations(2 per habitat type)were live-trapped.From each captured individual we noted body mass and food intake,measured as the amount of bait remaining in each trap.The physiological stress levels were measured non-inva-sively in collected fresh feces by quantifying fecal corticosterone metabolites(FCM)with a 5a-pregnane-3ß,11ß,21-triol-20-one enzyme immunoassay.Wood mice abundances decreased from spring to summer,were higher in Holm oak woods than in pine forests and also resulted in different age-class distribution between both habitats.Individuals inhabiting pine forests showed a lower body mass and increased food intake,probably because of the comparatively lower food quality and availability in this habitat.Furthermore,these individuals showed increased physiological stress levels,likely due to the lower quality habitat in relation to both food and vegetation cover availability.Overall,besides affecting local wood mouse abundance,our study underscores the effect of habitat quality on body mass,food intake and the endocrine stress response.Considering the wood mouse’s piv-otal position in ecosystems,these results could help in the understanding of environmental traits hampering the viability of wild populations.Álvaro NAVARRO-CASTILLA Isabel BARJA 2019Integrative Zoology2019,14,1:0
5Immune challenge of mating effort:steroid hormone profile,dark ventral patch and parasite burden in relation to intrasexual competition in male Iberian red deer显示文摘Testosterone secretion may regulate the reproductive effort and the development of sexual traits,but it may also involve costs at the immunological and metabolic levels.However,the evidence for this trade-off in wild populations is scarce.Cortisol also plays an important role in mediating the reproductive and immune functions.In this study,we analyzed whether the endoparasite burden relates to hormonal levels(fecal testosterone and cortisol metabolites)and/or morphological sexual traits(size of the dark ventral patch,a trait that indicates reproductive effort in males)in male Iberian red deer.For this purpose,we sampled male red deer harvested during hunting actions in 2 types of populations in south western Spain that differed in structure,affecting the level of male–male competition for mates.We used coprological analyses to estimate the parasite burden mainly of gastrointestinal and bronchopulmonary nematodes and of protozoa,and assessed testosterone and cortisol metabolite levels from fecal pellets.We found a positive relationship of host parasitation with both testosterone levels and the size of the dark ventral patch,but these relationships depended on the intensity of male–male competition in the population,being only found under the high-competition scenario.These results are discussed under the hypothesis of the testosterone immunocompetence handicap,suggesting a cost at the immunological level,and,therefore,higher susceptibility to parasite infection in males that make a greater reproductive effort.However,this effect seems to be modulated by the social environment(male–male competition)that might lead to different optima in testosterone production and sexual trait development.Eva DE LA PEÑA JoséMARTÍN Isabel BARJA Raúl PÉREZ-CABALLERO Isabel ACOSTA Juan CARRANZA 2020Integrative Zoology2020,15,4:0

7Onto the sense of smell in macaws, amazons and toucans: can they use volatile cues of fruits to make foraging decisions?显示文摘Over the past decades,empirical evidence has been accumulated indicating that olfactory information plays a fundamental role in bird life history.Nonetheless,many aspects of avian olfaction remain poorly understood.Our purpose was to broaden the knowledge about the importance of the sense of smell in some neglected bird groups:psittaciformes and ramphastids,and to compare how the response varied between the species.Because of the lack of information about the use of chemical cues for locating food in fruit-eating species,we also aimed to delve into this question.We conducted a 3-choice(water/vinegar/papaya and banana juice)scent test in 5 Costa Rican native species:scarlet macaw(Ara macao),red-lored amazon(Amazona autumnalis),yellow-naped amazon(Amazona auropalliata),keel-billed toucan(Ramphastos sulfuratus),and yellow-throated toucan(Ramphastos ambiguus).Results revealed that macaws and toucans allocated significantly more time to interacting with the fruit scent container,indicating that these species can perceive the volatile chemicals emitted by ripe fruits and that they can use this information to make foraging decisions.However,amazons did not dedicate more time to interact with the fruit treatment.Our research provides thefirst evidence of the ability to exploit chemical volatile cues in macaws and toucans.M.Carmen HERNÁNDEZ Ana María VILLADA Isabel BARJA 2023Integrative Zoology2023,18,4:0
8Relationships between soil pollution by heavy metals and melanin-dependent coloration of a fossorial amphisbaenian reptile显示文摘Melanin is the basis of coloration in many animals,and although it is often used in communication,thermoregulation,or camouflage,melanin has many other physiological functions.For example,in polluted habitats,melanin can have a detoxifying function.Melanic coloration would help to sequester in the skin the heavy metal contaminants from inside the body,which will be expelled to the exterior when the skin is sloughed.Moreover,animals should have evolved more melanic colorations in more polluted habitats(“industrial melanism”hypothesis).We examined whether the fossorial amphisbaenian reptile,Trogonophis wiegmanni,is able to eliminate heavy metals,derived from soil pollution by seagull depositions,through sloughing its skin.Our results suggest a covariation between levels of soil pollution by heavy metals and the concentration of heavy metals in the sloughed skins of amphisbaenians.This suggests that amphisbaenians may expel heavy metals from their bodies when they slough the skins.We also tested whether amphisbaenians inhabiting soils with higher levels of heavy metal pollution had darker(melanin-dependent)body colorations.However,contrary to predictions from the“industrial melanization”hypothesis,we found a negative relationship between soil pollution and proportions of melanic coloration.This contradictory result could,however,be explained because heavy metals have endocrine disruption effects that increase physiological stress,and higher stress levels could result in decreased melanogenesis.We suggest that although amphisbaenians might have some detoxifying mechanism linked to melanin in the skin,this process might be negatively affected by stress and result ineffective under conditions of high soil pollution.JoséMARTÍN Pablo RECIO Gonzalo RODRÍGUEZ-RUIZ Isabel BARJA Eduardo GUTIÉRREZ Luis VGARCÍA 2022Integrative Zoology2022,17,4:0
