| 7 | Lignin-based carbon fibers: Formation, modification and potential applications显示文摘As an aromatic polymer in nature, lignin has recently attracted gross attention because of its advantages of high carbon content, low cost and bio-renewability. However, most lignin is directly burnt for power generation to satisfy the energy demand of the pulp mills. As a result, only a handful of isolated lignin is used as a raw material. Thus, increasing value addition on lignin to expand its scope of applications is currently a challenge demanding immediate attention. Many efforts have been made in the valorization of lignin, including the preparation of precursors for carbon fibers. However, its complex structure and diversity significantly restrict the spinnability of lignin. In this review, we provide elaborate knowledge on the preparation of lignin-based carbon fibers ranging from the relationships among chemical structures, formation conditions and properties of fibers, to their potential applications. Specifically, control procedures for different spinning methods of lignin, including melt spinning, solution spinning and electrospinning, together with stabilization and carbonization are deeply discussed to provide an overall understanding towards the formation of lignin-based carbon fibers. | 8 | Burden of diabetic foot ulcer in Nigeria: Current evidence from the multicenter evaluation of diabetic foot ulcer in Nigeria显示文摘BACKGROUND Nigeria bears the greatest burden of diabetes prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa. Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes. Significant improvements in diabetic foot incidence and outcomes have been recorded in many Western countries in the past decade. However, the current burden of DFU in Nigeria is largely unknown. AIM To evaluate the patients’ profile, ulcer characteristics, associated co-morbidities and outcome of patients with DFU in Nigeria. METHODS Multicenter evaluation of diabetic foot ulcer in Nigeria was a one year multicenter observational study of patients hospitalized for DFU in six tertiary health institutions in Nigeria from March 2016 to March 2017. Demographic and diabetes information, ulcer characteristics and associated co-morbidities were assessed. Relevant laboratory and imaging studies were performed. All patients received appropriate multi-disciplinary care and were followed up until discharge or death. Outcome variables of interest were ulcer healing, lower extremity amputation (LEA), duration of hospitalization and mortality. RESULTS A total of 336 patients (55.1% male) with mean age of 55.9 ± 12.5 years were enrolled into this study. Majority (96.1%) had type 2 diabetes. Only 25.9% of the subjects had prior foot care knowledge. Most of the subjects presented late to the hospital and median (IQR) duration of ulcer at presentation was 39 (28-54) d. Ulcers were already advanced (Wagner grades ≥ 3) in 79.2% of the subjects while 76.8% of the ulcers were infected at the time of admission. The commonest comorbidities were systemic hypertension, anemia and hyperglycemic emergencies. One hundred and nineteen subjects (35.4%) suffered LEA while 10.4% left against medical advice. The median (IQR) duration of hospitalization was 52.0 (29-66) d with case fatality rate of 20.5%. CONCLUSION The burden of DFU in Nigeria is very high. The major gaps include low level of foot care knowledge among diabetic patients, overdependence on self-medication and unorthodox medicine following development of foot ulceration, late hospital presentation, and high amputation and mortality rates. | 9 | Evaluation of the Xpert^(■)MTB/RIF assay and microscopy for the diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Namibia显示文摘Background:Tuberculosis(TB)kills approximately two million people and infects around nine million worldwide annually.Its proper management,especially in resource-limited settings,has been hindered by the lack of rapid and easy-to-use diagnostic tests.Sputum smear microscopy remains the cheapest,readily available diagnostic method but it only identifies less than half of the patients with a HIV/TB co-infection because the bacilli would have disseminated from the lungs to other areas of the body.The fully automated Xpert^(■)MTB/RIF assay is a promising innovation for diagnosing TB and detecting resistance to rifampicin.This study aimed to evaluate the use of Xpert^(■)MTB/RIF assay and microscopy in the diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Namibia,by determining the disease’s epidemiology and calculating the proportion of cases infected just with TB and those with a resistance to rifampicin among the total suspected cases of TB in the country.Methods:This retrospective study analysed TB cases that were diagnosed using both the Xpert^(■)MTB/RIF assay and microscopy.Data were collected from patient records from the Meditech laboratory information system of the Namibia Institute of Pathology for the time period of July 2012-April 2013.Data from 13 regions were collected.Results:The total number of specimens collected from patients with symptoms of pulmonary TB was 1842.Of these,594(32.20%)were found to be positive for MTB by Xpert^(■)MTB/RIF assay,out of which 443(24.05%)were also found to be positive by microscopy.The remainder was negative.The male patients were more resistant to rifampicin when compared to the female patients.Conclusions:Tuberculosis is widely distributed throughout Namibia,with slightly more males infected than females.Most TB patients are also co-infected with HIV.Both microscopy and Xpert^(■)MTB/RIF assay are crucial for the diagnosis of TB in the country.Screening diagnostic efforts should focus on the sexually active HIV positive male population who could be the source of more RIF-resistant TB than females to prevent its spread. | Rooyen T.Mavenyengwa Emma Shaduka Innocent Maposa | 2017 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1: | 4 |

| 14 | Inhibition of sulfate-reducing bacteria influenced corrosion on hydrophobic poly(dimethylsiloxane)coatings显示文摘Sulfate-reducing bacteria(SRB)has been pointed out as one of the causative agents of microbial induced corrosion in the marine environment.To address this problem,novel strategies are being experimented as against the earlier methods which have been banned due to their toxic effects on useful aquatic lives.Thus,the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of non-toxic perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane(PFDTS)on resistance of hydrophobic poly(dimethylsiloxane)/phosphoric acid-treated zinc oxide(PDMS/PA-treated ZnO)coatings to SRB-induced biofouling and corrosion.The surface features of the coatings before and after exposure to SRB/NaCl solution were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Wettability of the coatings before and after exposure was also measured.The interaction of SRB with the coatings was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy.The resistance performance of the modified coatings against SRB-induced corrosion was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS).The EIS measurements revealed that 0.20 g PFDTS-based coating displayed highest corrosion resistance with impedance modulus of 6.301×10^10 after 15 d of exposure to SRB/NaCl medium.The results were corroborated by surface and chemical interaction analyses,and thus,indicate that 0.20 g PFDTSmodified PDMS/PA-treated ZnO coating has potentials for excellent SRB-induced corrosion resistance and anti-biofouling performance. | Innocent O.Arukalam C.N.Njoku Lihui Yang Baorong Hou Ying Li | 2020 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2020,52,17: | 2 |
