1Vascular endothelial growth factor trap-eye(Aflibercept) for the management of diabetic macular edema显示文摘Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is the most common cause of visual loss among working age individuals.Diabetic macular edema(DME)is an important complication of DR that affects around one third of the patients with DR.Several treatments have been approved for DME ranging from blood pressure and glycemic control to photocoagulation and more recently the use of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)antagonists. The index review discusses aflibercept(EYLEA-Regeneron Pharmaceuticals,Inc.,Tarrytown,New York,NY,and Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals,Berlin,Germany)in the context of other VEGF antagonists currently available for the treatment of DME.A systematic search of literature was conducted on PubMed,Scopus, and Google Scholar with no limitation on language or year of publication.Pre-clinical studies of aflibercept have shown a higher affinity of this molecule for vascular endothelial growth factor A(VEGF-A)along with a longer duration of action as compared to other VEGF antagonists.Recent clinical trials have shown visual outcome results for aflibercept to be similarly favorable as compared to other available agents with the added benefit of fewer required injections and less frequent monitoring.Aflibercept presents a potential exciting new addition to the armamentarium of current VEGF antagonists available for the treatment of DME and other retinal vascular diseases. However, further studies are indicated to confirm the role, safety, and efficacy of aflibercept for DME.Ahmadreza Moradi Yasir Jamal Sepah Mohammad Ali Sadiq Humzah Nasir Salima Kherani Raafay Sophie Diana V Do Quan Dong Nguyen 2013World Journal of Diabetes2013,4,6:8

10Hepatitis E infection:A review显示文摘Hepatitis E virus(HEV)is a small non-enveloped virus that is transmitted via the fecal-oral route. It is a highly common cause of acute hepatitis, particularly in low to middle income regions of Asia,Africa, and Central America. Most cases are self-limited,and symptomatic patients usually present with acute icteric hepatitis.A subset of patients including pregnant women, older men, those with preexisting liver disease and immunocompromised patients however, may develop severe disease and hepatic failure.Immunocompromised patients are also at risk for chronic infection, and their immunosuppression should be decreased in order to facilitate viral clearance.HEV can also present with a variety of extra-intestinal manifestations including neurological, renal, hematological, and pancreatic derangements. The gold standard of diagnosis is HEV ribonucleic acid detection via nucleic acid amplification testing.Currently, there are no approved treatments for Hepatitis E,though ribavirin is the most commonly used agent to reduce viral load.Studies assessing the safety and efficacy of other antiviral agents for HEV are currently underway.HEV vaccination has been approved in China, and is currently being investigated in other regions as well. This review article aims to discuss the epidemiology, pathogenesis, presentation, diagnosis, complications, and treatment of Hepatitis E infection.Humzah Iqbal Bilal Fazal Mehmood Aalam Sohal Marina Roytman 2023World Journal of Virology2023,12,5:0
11Alcohol-related hepatitis:A review article显示文摘Alcohol-related hepatitis(ARH)is a unique type of alcohol-associated liver disease characterized by acute liver inflammation caused by significant alcohol use.It ranges in severity from mild to severe and carries significant morbidity and mortality. The refinement of scoring systems has enhanced prognostication and guidance of clinical decision-making in the treatment of this complex disease.Although treatment focuses on supportive care, steroids have shown benefit in select circumstances. There has been a recent interest in this disease process,as coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic led to substantial rise in cases.Although much is known regarding the pathogenesis, prognosis remains grim due to limited treatment options. This article summarizes the epidemiology, genetics, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of ARH.Hunza Chaudhry Aalam Sohal Humzah Iqbal Marina Roytman 2023World Journal of Gastroenterology2023,29,17:0
