Integrated study of the water–ecosystem–economy in the Heihe River Basin显示文摘The ecological water diversion project in the Heihe River Basin is the irst successful case in China in which the ecological systems in a river basin have been rescued. his project serves as a valuable example for the management of ecosystems in other inland river basins. his paper reviews the integrated studies of the water–ecosystem–economy relationship in the Heihe River Basin and concludes that sustainable development in inland river basins requires the basin to be considered as a whole, with the relationships between the upstream, midstream and downstream areas of the basin coordinated appropriately. Successful development in these basins will be relected in an improved output per cubic meter of water and the implementation of integrated river basin management practices.Guodong Cheng Xin Li Wenzhi Zhao Zhongmin Xu Qi Feng Shengchun Xiao Honglang Xiao 2014National Science Review2014,1,3:55
Isotopic evidence for the moisture origin and composition of surface runoff in the headwaters of the Heihe River basin显示文摘We investigated the moisture origin and contribution of different water sources to surface runoff entering the headwaters of the Heihe River basin on the basis of NECP/NCAR(National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research) re-analysis data and variations in the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios(δ D and δ 18O) of precipitation, spring, river, and melt water. The similar seasonality in precipitation δ 18O at different sites reveals the same moisture origin for water entering the headwaters of the Heihe River basin. The similarity in the seasonality of δ 18O and d-excess for precipitation at Yeniugou and Urumchi, which showed more positive δ 18O and lower d-excess values in summer and more negative δ 18O and higher d-excess values in winter, indicates a dominant effect of westerly air masses in summer and the integrated influence of westerly and polar air masses in winter. Higher d-excess values throughout the year for Yeniugou suggest that in arid inland areas of northwestern China, water is intensively recycled. Temporal changes in δ 18O,δ D,and d-excess reveal distinct contributions of different bodies of water to surface runoff. For example, there were similar trends for δ D,δ 18O,and d-excess of precipitation and river water from June to September, similar δ 18O trends for river and spring water from December to February, and similar trends for precipitation and runoff volumes. However, there were significant differences in δ 18O between melt water and river water in September. Our results show that the recharge of surface runoff by precipitation occurred mainly from June to mid-September,whereas the supply of surface runoff in winter was from base flow(as spring water) ,mostly with a lower runoff amount.ZHAO LiangJu YIN Li XIAO HongLang CHENG GuoDong ZHOU MaoXian YANG YongGang LI CaiZhi ZHOU Jian 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,4:35
Detection and fine-mapping of SC7 resistance genes via linkage and association analysis in soybean显示文摘Soybean mosaic virus(SMV) disease is one of the most serious and broadly distributed soybean(Glycine max(L.) Merr.) diseases. Here, we combine the advantages of association and linkage analysis to identify and fine-map the soybean genes associated with resistance to SMV strain SC7.A set of 191 soybean accessions from different geographic origins and 184 recombinant inbred lines(RILs) derived from Kefeng No.1(resistant) Nannong 1138-2(susceptible) were used in this study. The SC7 resistance genes were previously mapped to a 2.65 Mb region on chromosome 2 and a 380 kb region on chromosome 13. Among 19 single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) detected via association analysis in the study, the SNP BARC-021625-04157 was located in the2.65 Mb region, and the SNP BARC-041671-08065 was located near the 380 kb region; three genes harboring the SNPs were probably related to SC7 resistance. The resistance gene associated with BARC-021625-04157 was then finemapped to a region of approximately 158 kb on chromosome2 using 184 RILs. Among the 15 genes within this region, one NBS-LRR type gene, one HSP40 gene and one serine carboxypeptidase-type gene might be candidate SC7 resistance genes. These results will be useful for map-based cloning and marker-assisted selection in soybean breeding programs.Honglang Yan Hui Wang Hao Cheng Zhenbin Hu Shanshan Chu Guozheng Zhang Deyue Yu 2015Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2015,57,8:10
Intra-annual stem diameter growth of Tamarix ramosissima and association with hydroclimatic factors in the lower reaches of China's Heihe River显示文摘High-resolution observations of cambial phenology and intra-annual growth dynamics are useful approaches for understanding the response of tree growth to climate and environmental change. During the past two decades, rapid socioeconomic development has increased the demand for water resources in the oases of the middle reaches of the Heihe River in northwestern China, and the lower reaches of the Heihe River have changed from a perennial river to an ephemeral stream with a decreased and degraded riparian zone. Tamarisk(Tamarix ramosissima) is the dominant shrub species of the desert riparian forest. In this study, the daily and seasonal patterns of tamarisk stem diameter growth, including the main period of tree ring formation, were examined. Observations concerning the driving forces of growth changes, along with implications for the ecology of the dendrohydrological area and management of desert riparian forests in similar arid regions, are also presented. The diurnal-seasonal activity of stem diameter and the dynamics of growth ring formation were studied using a point dendrometer and micro-coring methods during the 2012 growing season in shrub tamarisk in a desert riparian forest stand in the lower reaches of the Heihe River in Ejin Banner, Inner Mongolia of northwestern China. Generally, the variation in diurnal diameter of tamarisk was characterized by an unstable multi-peak pattern, with the cumulative stem diameter growth over the growing season following an S-shaped curve. The period from late May to early August was the main period of stem diameter growth and growth-ring formation. Among all of the hydroclimatic factors considered in this study, only groundwater depth was significantly correlated with stem diameter increment during this period. Therefore, for the dendrochronological study, the annual rings of the tamarisk can be used to reconstruct processes that determine the regional water regime, such as river runoff and fluctuations in groundwater depth. For the management of desert riparian forests, suitable groundwater depths must be maintained in the spring and summer to sustain tree health and a suitable stand structure.ShengChun XIAO HongLang XIAO XiaoMei PENG QuanYan TIAN 2014Journal of Arid Land2014,6,4:10

The formation of a drought horizon in shrub rhizosphere and its effect, ecohydrological function of the crust and its effect on the soil-plant system change are discussed. Driven by water self-regulation and water stress, the soil-plant system is going to develop towards the steppe desert to ensure more effective use and optimum collocation of water resource.XIAO Honglang CHENG Guodong LI Xinrong SONG Yaoxuan WANG Xinping 2004Science China Earth Sciences2004,47,z1:9
Simulation of hydrological processes of mountainous watersheds in inland river basins: taking the Heihe Mainstream River as an example显示文摘The hydrological processes of mountainous watersheds in inland river basins are complicated. It is absolutely significant to quantify mountainous runoff for social, economic and ecological purposes. This paper takes the mountainous watershed of the Heihe Mainstream River as a study area to simulate the hydrological processes of mountainous watersheds in inland river basins by using the soil and water assessment tool(SWAT)model.SWAT simulation results show that both the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency and the determination coefficient values of the calibration period(January 1995 to December 2002)and validation period(January 2002 to December 2009)are higher than 0.90,and the percent bias is controlled within±5%,indicating that the simulation results are satisfactory.According to the SWAT performance,we discussed the yearly and monthly variation trends of the mountainous runoff and the runoff components. The results show that from 1996 to 2009,an indistinctive rising trend was observed for the yearly mountainous runoff, which is mainly recharged by lateral flow, and followed by shallow groundwater runoff and surface runoff. The monthly variation demonstrates that the mountainous runoff decreases slightly from May to July, contrary to other months. The mountainous runoff is mainly recharged by shallow groundwater runoff in January,February, and from October to December,by surface runoff in March and April, and by lateral flow from May to September.ZhenLiang YIN HongLang XIAO SongBing ZOU Rui ZHU ZhiXiang LU YongChao LAN YongPing SHEN 2014Journal of Arid Land2014,6,1:7
The westerly fluctuation and water vapor transport over the Qilian-Heihe valley显示文摘The westerly fluctuation and the atmospheric water vapor transport over the Qilian-Heihe valley are analyzed and the results show that, in the water vapor transport stream field from Jun to September, this valley is in the westerly stream and the water vapor comes from westerlies water transport via the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The net water vapor transport is less net import and different from most areas of the northwest China. The interannual changes in water vapor transport over the valley arise from the westerly fluctuation, and have a positive relationship to the interannual changes in westerly wind speed. The cold air actions from the Mongol low pressure are the primary system that controls the westerly water vapor transport. Its action chain is that, the Mongol low pressure is strengthened → the circulation meridionality will be increased → the cold air will move southwards → the westerly will be stronger → the wind convergence of direction and speed will be stronger → the water vapor convergence transport will be increased → the local water vapor content will be increased. The interannual changes in atmospheric water vapor transport over the valley rely mainly on the convergence transport, but the effect of advection transport is less. The interannual changes of strong or weak westerly affect mainly the convergence transport, and then make the atmospheric water vapor net transport increase or decrease over the Qilian-Heihe valley.WANG Keli CHENG Guodong XIAO Honglang JIANG Hao 2004Science China Earth Sciences2004,47,z1:6
Vicissitude of Sogo Nur and environmental-climatic change during last 1500 years显示文摘Lakes in arid zone are sensitive to climatic changes. The lacustrine sediment sequence in Sogo Nur has well and truly recorded climatic events such as the Sui-Tang Dynasty Warm Period, the Song-Liao Dynasty Cold Period, the Medieval Warm Period, the Little Ice Age and the 20th Century Warm Period. Commonly, the climate in warm Periods was relatively humid, accordingly the lake area extended and water level rose, and vice versa. Apart from climatic change, human activity is also an important factor of influencing lake vicissitude, and they played the dominant role alternatively during different periods; the factor of climatic change predominated in historical period, while since the beginning of the 20th century the utilization of water resources by human has became decisive.JIN Heling, XIAO Honglang, SUN Liangying, ZHANG Hong, SUN Zhong & LI XiaozeKey Laboratory of Desert and Desertification, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou 730000, China School of Resources and Environment, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou 730000, China 2004Science China Earth Sciences2004,47,z1:6
A Combining Call Admission Control and Power Control Scheme for D2D Communications Underlaying Cellular Networks显示文摘As device-to-device(D2D) communications usually reuses the resource of cellular networks, call admission control(CAC) and power control are crucial problems. However in most power control schemes, total data rates or throughput are regarded as optimization criterion. In this paper, a combining call admission control(CAC) and power control scheme under guaranteeing QoS of every user equipment(UE) is proposed. First, a simple CAC scheme is introduced. Then based on the CAC scheme, a combining call admission control and power control scheme is proposed. Next, the performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated. Finally, maximum DUE pair number and average transmitting power is calculated. Simulation results show that D2 D communications with the proposed combining call admission control and power control scheme can effectively improve the maximum DUE pair number under the premise of meeting necessary QoS.Xujie Li Wenna Zhang Honglang Zhang Wenfeng Li 2016China Communications2016,13,10:5
Study of temperature and precipitation change in upstream mountain area of the Hexi inland river basin since 1960s显示文摘All rivers in the Hexi inland region of Gansu Province, China, originate from the northern slope of the Qilian Mountains. They are located in the southern portion of the region and respectively belong to the three large river systems from east to west, the Shiyang, Heihe and Shule river basins. These rivers are supplied by precipitation, snowmelt and ice-melt runoff from the Qilian Mountain area. Therefore, changes of precipitation and temperature in the upstream watersheds of these rivers have an important effect on changes of mountainous runoff and reasonable utilization of water resources in this region. For this reason, the Qilian Mountain area, upstream watersheds and runoff forming areas of these rivers are chosen as the study area. The change characteristics and variation trend of temperature and precipitation in this area under the backdrop of global warming are analyzed based on observational data of relational weather and hydrologic stations in the area. Results show that temperatures in the upriver mountain areas of these three large river basins have been increasing, although the increasing degree is differentially affected by global warming. The rising extent of annual and seasonal temperatures in the upstream mountain area of the Shule river basin located in the western Qilian Mountains, were all largest over the past 50 years. Precipitation in the upstream mountain areas of Hexi region' three river basins located respectively in the western, middle and eastern Qilian Mountains have been presenting an increasing trend to varying degrees as a whole for more than 50 years. This means that climate in the upstream mountain areas of Hexi region' three river basins are becoming increasingly warmer and moister over the past 50 years, which will be very good for the ecological environment and agricultural production in the region.YongChao Lan HongLang Xiao XingLin Hu HongWei Ding SongBing Zou ChengFang La Jie Song 2012Research in Cold and Arid Regions2012,4,6:4
Changes in leaf nutrient traits and photosynthesis of four tree species: effects of elevated [CO_(2)], N fertilization and canopy positions显示文摘Aims Leaf traits of trees exposed to elevated[CO_(2)]in association with other environmental factors are poorly understood in tropical and subtropical regions. Our goal was to investigate the impacts of elevated[CO_(2)]and N fertilization on leaf traits in southern China. Methods Four tree species,Schima superba Gardn.et Champ.(S.superba),Ormosia pinnata(Lour.)Merr(O.pinnata),Castanopsis hystrix AC.DC.(C.hystrix)and Acmena acuminatissima(Blume)Merr.et Perry(A.acuminatissima)were studied in a factorial combination of atmospheric[CO_(2)](ambient at~390μmol mol^(-1)and elevated[CO_(2)]at~700μmol mol^(-1))and N fertilization(ambient and ambient+100 kg N ha^(-1)year^(-1))in open-top chambers in southern China for 5 years.Leaf mass per unit leaf area(LMA),leaf nutrient concentration and photosynthesis(A_(sat))were measured.Important Findings Results indicated that leaf traits and photosynthesis were affected differently by elevated[CO_(2)]and N fertilization among species.Elevated[CO_(2)]decreased LMA in all species, while N fertilization did not affect LMA.Leaf mass-based N concentration(N_(M))was significantly greater in O.pinnata and C.hystrix grown in elevated[CO_(2)]but was lower in S.superba.Leaf mass-based P concentration(P_(M))was significantly greater in C.hystrix and A.acuminatissima exposed to elevated[CO_(2)]but was lower in S.superba.N fertilization significantly increased P_(M) in O.pinnata but decreased P_(M) in S.superba.Photosynthetic stimulation in O.pinnata,C.hystrix and A.acuminatissima was sustained after 5 years of CO_(2)fumigation.N fertilization did not modify the effects of elevated[CO_(2)]on photosynthesis.Leaf traits(N_(M),N_(A),P_(M),P_(A))and light-saturated photosynthesis were decreased from the upper to lower canopy.Canopy position did not alter the responses of leaf traits and photosynthesis to elevated[CO_(2)].Results suggest that photosynthetic stimulation by elevated[CO_(2)]in native species in subtropical regions may be sustained in the long term.Juxiu Liu Deqiang Zhang Guoyi Zhou Honglang Duan 2012Journal of Plant Ecology2012,5,4:4
Stable isotope techniques in plant water sources:a review显示文摘The stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes widely exist in various kinds of natural water.Plants have to cope with various water sources:rainwater, soil water, groundwater, sea water, and mixtures. These are usually characterized by different isotopic signatures (18O/16O and D/H ratios).Because there are relative abundance variations in water, and plant roots do not discriminate against specific water isotopes during water uptake, hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope ratios of water within plants provide new information on water sources, interactions between plant species and water use patterns under natural conditions. At present, the measurement of δD,δ18O composition of various potential water sources and stem water has become significant means to identify plant water sources.Based on previous studies, this review highlights recent advances such as theory basis, methodology,as well as different spatial and temporal scales, and existed questions and prospects.Stable isotope techniques for estimating plant water sources have provided valuable tools for conducting basic and applied research.Future studies emphasize the modification of preparing methods, isotope technique combined with other measurements, and aerial organs of plant water source should be en-couraged.Qiu Yang HongLang Xiao LiangJu Zhao MaoXian Zhou CaiZhi Li ShengKui Cao 2010Research in Cold and Arid Regions2010,2,2:3
An ultrasonic humidification fluorescent tracing method for detecting unsaturated atmospheric water absorption by the aerial parts of desert plants显示文摘Atmospheric water absorption by plants has been explored for more than two centuries, and the aerial parts of plants, particularly the leaves of certain species, have been demonstrated to have an ability to absorb and utilize saturated atmospheric water such as fog, dew and condensed water. So far, however, there have been few studies on the aerial parts of desert plants in their absorption of unsaturated water from the atmosphere. This study presents an ultrasonic humidification fluorescent tracing method of detecting unsaturated atmospheric water absorption by the aerial parts of desert plants. We constructed an organic glass room based on the sizes of field plants. Then, the aboveground parts of the plants were humidified in the sealed glasshouse using an ultrasonic humidifier containing fluorescent reagents. The humidity and wetting time were controlled by turning on or off the humidifier according to the reading of a thermo-hygrometer suspended in the glasshouse. Fluorescence microscopy was employed to observe these plant samples. This method can generate unsaturated atmospheric water vapor and incorporate other fluorescent reagents or water-soluble chemical reagents for gasified humidification. In addition, it can identify plant parts that absorb unsaturated atmospheric water from the air, detect water absorption sites on the surface of leaves or tender stems, and determine the ability of tissues or microstructure of aerial parts to absorb water. This method provides a direct visual evidence for the inspection of leaf or tender stem microstructure in response to unsaturated atmospheric water absorption. Moreover, this method shows that aqueous pores in the cuticles of leaves or tender stems of desert plants are large enough to allow the passage of ionic fluorescent brightener with a molecular weight of up to 917 g/mol. Thus, this paper provides an important approach that explores the mechanism by which desert plants utilize unsaturated atmospheric water.WANG Xiaohua XIAO Honglang REN Juan CHENG Yiben YANG Qiu 2016Journal of Arid Land2016,8,2:3
Using humic acid for remediation of sandy soils contaminated by heavy metal显示文摘This paper presents the development of a new remediation technology for contaminated sandy soil using humic acid (HA). Distribution of amount of Cr (VI) in the aqueous or solid system containing humic acid and sandy soil, was studied using batch experiments, es-pecially for effects of reaction time, pH, concentrations, temperature and irradiation on the reduction of Cr (VI), and the optimum reaction conditions. The results indicated a significant increase of the adsorption of Cr (VI) because of the complexion reaction between HA and Cr (VI) that occurred under acidic condition. The reaction mechanisms of HA with chromium on sand surfaces were certified. Thus it came to a conclusion that HA could be used effectively on remediation of Cr (VI)-contaminated soil and groundwater in a wide range of pH, with or without sunlight. These results suggest that the organic-inorganic complex-such as sandy soils coated with humic substances-is important as a metal reservoir in the environment.YaJun Wang 1, HongLang Xiao 1, JinXi Wang 2, Yong Wang 3 1. 15Effects of salt and alkali stress on Reaumuria soongorica germination显示文摘Seed germination and early seedling growth are crucial stages for plant establishment. Two neutral(Na Cl and Na2SO4) and two alkali(Na HCO3 and Na2CO3) salts were selected to investigate their effects on germination and recovery responses in Reaumuria soongorica. Results show that both salt types significantly reduced germination and radicle elongation. The rate of germination and emergence of R. soongorica seeds continuously decreased as salinity increased, and the time to achieve maximum germination rate was delayed. The speed of seed germination dropped rapidly as salt concentration increased.Alkaline salts restricted the germination rate of R. soongorica seeds, and stresses resulting from alkaline salts and high concentrations of neutral salts resulted in many deformed seedlings. The length of the radicle and germ decreased with increasing salt concentration, but certain concentrations of salt and increased p H promoted germ growth. The results of regression analysis show that salt concentration was the dominant factor inhibiting R. soongorica seed germination rate. Salinity, buffering capacity, and p H all affected embryo growth, but salinity had the most pronounced effect. Seed viability under highly saline conditions appears to be a better indicator of adaptation to saline environments than seed germination under saline conditions.Fang Wang HongLang Xiao XiaoMei Peng Shang Li 2017Research in Cold and Arid Regions2017,9,2:2
Adsorption kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies of adsorption of pollutant from aqueous solutions onto humic acid显示文摘In the present study, humic acid was used as an adsorbent for the investigation of the adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermo-dynamic parameters of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution at varying pH,temperatures, and concentrations.Adsorption isotherms and equilibrium adsorption capacities were determined by the fittings of the experimental data to three well-known iso-therm models:Langmuir,Freundlich, and Redlich-Peterson.The results showed that the Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson models appear to fit the adsorption better than did the Freundlich adsorption model for the adsorption of chromium onto humic acid. The equilibrium constants were used to calculate thermodynamic parameters such as the change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy. The derived adsorption constants (logaL) and their temperature dependencies from Langmuir isotherm have been used to calculate the corresponding thermodynamic quantities such as the free energy of adsorption, heat, and entropy of adsorption. The thermo-dynamic data indicate that Cr (VI) adsorption onto humic acid is entropically driven and characterized by physical adsorption.YaJun Wang,HongLang Xiao,Fang Wang Heihe Key Laboratory of Ecohydrology and River Basin Science,Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Re-search Institute,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Lanzhou,Gansu 730000,China. 2009Research in Cold and Arid Regions2009,1,4:2

An analysis on ecological civilization construction in Gansu based on a quantified SWOT framework显示文摘Ecological civilization(EC) construction has become one of the key elements of China's reform and development process, since it was put forward at the 17 th National People's Congress(NPC) in 2007 and improved at the 18 th NPC in 2012, and stressed at the third plenary session of the 18 th NPC. The provincial areas are the most important pilot units of EC strategy. Therefore, research on EC at the provincial level can meet the practical demand for EC in China. Based on the existing provincial circumstances in Gansu and its significant position as an ecological barrier in northwestern China, and aiming at the core issue of why and how to build EC in Gansu, this paper employs SWOT(strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis, the Delphi method, and a combined quantitative analysis and coordinate method, and then calculates the relevant strategic orientation angle(θ = 1.4605) and strength coefficient(ρ = 0.53). The results show that Gansu should take an opportunities-dominated strategy, and choose opportunity-strength measures, so the province can increase its internal strengths and decrease its weaknesses with external opportunities. Specific measures are recommended to actively promote an EC construction strategy.LiLi Li HongLang Xiao SongBing Zou Juan Ren 2014Research in Cold and Arid Regions2014,6,6:1
Evaluation of groundwater sustainability based on groundwater age simulation in the Zhangye Basin of Heihe River watershed, northwestern China显示文摘Water resources, as the primary limiting factor, constrain the economic and social development in arid inland areas. The Zhangye Basin is a representative area of inland river basins, which is located in the middle parts of the Heihe River watershed, northwestern China. Facing with the huge water shortage, people exploited ground- water at a large scale in recent years. The reducing recharge from surface water and over-exploitation of ground- water led to the decline of groundwater levels and threatened the sustainability of water resources. This study con- structed a conceptual and numerical groundwater flow model and calibrated the model based on the observed wells. A solute transport model was built using MT3DMS to calculate the groundwater age distribution in the Zhangye Basin. The simulated result shows that the youngest groundwater is distributed near the most upstream areas in the model domain, which is less than 1,000 a, older groundwater is distributed in deeper parts of the aquifer and near the discharge outlets, ranging from 6,000 a to over 20,000 a. Spatial variation of groundwater ages in the middle area indicates the recharge diversity between unconfined and confined aquifer. Groundwater age can serve as an indicator to evaluate groundwater's renewal capacity and sustainability. The formation of groundwater resources in the lower stream area would spend 10,000 a or even more than 20,000 a, so exploitation of groundwater in these areas should be restrained.Heng WEI HongLang XIAO ZhenLiang YIN ZhiXiang LU 2014Journal of Arid Land2014,6,3:1
