Saline-Sodic Soils:Potential Sources of Nitrous Oxide and Carbon Dioxide Emissions?显示文摘Increasing salt-affected agricultural land due to low precipitation, high surface evaporation, irrigation with saline water, and poor cultural practices has triggered the interest to understand the influence of salt on nitrous oxide(N_2O) and carbon dioxide(CO_2)emissions from soil.Three soils with varying electrical conductivity of saturated paste extract(EC_e)(0.44-7.20 dS m^(-1)) and sodium adsorption ratio of saturated paste extract(SARe)(1.0-27.7),two saline-sodic soils(S2 and S3) and a non-saline,non-sodic soil(S1),were incubated at moisture levels of 40%,60%,and 80%water-filled pore space(WFPS) for 30 d,with or without nitrogen(N)fertilizer addition(urea at 525 μg g^(-1) soil).Evolving CO_2 and N2 O were estimated by analyzing the collected gas samples during the incubation period.Across all moisture and N levels, the cumulative N_2O emissions increased significantly by 39.8%and 42.4%in S2 and S3,respectively,compared to S1.The cumulative CO_2 emission from the three soils did not differ significantly as a result of the complex interactions of salinity and sodicity.Moisture had no significant effect on N_2O emissions, but cumulative CO_2 emissions increased significantly with an increase in moisture.Addition of N significantly increased cumulative N_2O and CO_2 emissions. These showed that saline-sodic soils can be a significant contributor of N_2O to the environment compared to non-saline,non-sodic soils. The application of N fertilizer, irrigation, and precipitation may potentially increase greenhouse gas(N2O and CO_2) releases from saline-sodic soils. | Upasana GHOSH Resham THAPA Thomas DESUTTER HE Yangbo Amitava CHATTERJEE | 2017 | Pedosphere2017,27,1: | 5
The soil configuration on granite residuals affects Benggang erosion by altering the soil water regime on the slope显示文摘A permanent collapsing gully, locally called Benggang, formed on slopes with deep granite red soil and is a type of unique gully erosion widely prevalent in southern China.Three different soil configurations(SC),ie,red-transition-sandy(SC I,the transition is the soil layer between the red soil and the sandy soil layer),transition-sandy(SC II)or sandy(SC III)are usually present in the soil profile of the Benggang slope. However, little attention has been paid to impacts of SCs on the triggering of Benggang erosion. In this study,we aimed to explore the relationships between soil water content(SWC)and triggering of Benggang erosion under different SC conditions. The soil properties of different soil layers were measured and the SWC at depths of 20,40,60,and 80 cm were monitored at 5-min intervals along a typical Benggang(SC I)during 2016-2018.The SWC of Benggang slopes with different SCs were simulated by VADOSE/W model. Results showed that the red soil layer had a higher water retention capacity and shear strength than the sandy soil layer.Even if the SWC is higher(e.g.,0.42 cm^(3)/cm^(3))at red soil layer or transition layer, the corresponding shear strength is greater than that of sandy soil layer with a lower SWC(e.g.,032 cm^(3)/cm^(3)).Relationships between shear strength and SWC of different soil layers indicate that Benggang erosion is triggered by an increase in the SWC in the deep sandy layer. Results also showed that differences exist in the SWC distribution among the different SCs.The SWC is higher in topsoil than in deeper soil in SC I and SC II,while in SC III,the opposite trend is observed. These results revealed that the presence of the red soil or transition layer can reduce the infiltration of rainwater into the deep sandy layer, thus can reduce the possibility of collapse. Our results show that the SC affects the stability of the headwall, and results provide great significances to guide the mitigation of Benggang erosion. | Xiaoqian Duan Yusong Deng Yu Tao Yangbo He Lirong Lin Jiazhou Chen | 2021 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2021,9,3: | 4
Clinical study of IL-18 and NANOG gene polymorphisms in prostate cancer patients显示文摘Objective Recent studies have shown abnormal expression of NANOG and IL-18 to be related to cancer. However, the molecular mechanism by which IL-18 and NANOG gene polymorphisms are associated with prostate cancer is unclear. In this study, we examined whether IL-18 and NANOG gene polymorphisms and their interaction with prostate cancer-related risk factor are associated with the susceptibility to and clinicopathological development of prostate cancer among Chinese men. Methods Polymorphisms in the NANOG and IL-18 genes were evaluated for susceptibility in 120 patients with prostate cancer. The control group consisted of 125 samples from Chinese men. Genotyping was conducted using Taq Man allelic discrimination assays. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. Results No association of NANOG and IL-18 gene polymorphisms and overall prostate cancer susceptibility was detected. The IL-18-607 CC genotype was significantly associated with a higher tumor grade(P = 0.025) and stage(P =0.001). The IL-18-137 GG genotype correlated with a higher tumor grade(P = 0.028) and stage(P = 0.008). The IL-18-137 G allele was significantly more frequent in patients with lymph node metastasis(P = 0.035). The IL-18-607 CC genotype was associated with distant metastasis(P = 0.025). However, no significant association was observed between NANOG polymorphisms and any clinicopathological feature. The Cox proportional hazard model showed that tumor grade and stage grouping were independent prognostic factors in IL-18, while IL-18 polymorphism was not. Polymorphism variants in the IL-18(IL-18-607 and IL-18-137) and NANOG(genotypes AC) genes might be associated with a worse prognosis of patients with prostate cancer. Conclusion NANOG may be associated with the early stages of prostate cancer carcinogenesis. IL-18 and NANOG gene polymorphisms may play a major role in the growth, invasion, and metastasis of prostate cancer. | Shaojun Nong Yangbo Guan Zhiwei Wang Zhongqing Wei Yueping Zhang Jian Ni Chongsheng He Limin Ma Shujun Zhou Wenguang Li | 2018 | Oncology and Translational Medicine2018,4,6: | 2
Significant association between IL-18 and OCT4 gene polymorphisms in susceptibility and clinical characteristics of prostate cancer显示文摘Objective Recent studies have shown abnormal expression of octamer-binding transcription factor 4(OCT4) and interleukin-18(IL-18) to be related to cancer. However, the molecular mechanisms by which the IL-18 and OCT4 gene polymorphisms are associated with prostate cancer remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to determine whether the presence of IL-18 and OCT4 polymorphisms were associated with size, grade, tumor, nodes and metastasis(TNM) stage, or survival in patients with prostate cancer. Methods Polymorphisms in OCT4 and IL-18 genes were evaluated to determine susceptibility to prostate cancer in 120 patients. A control group consisted of 125 Chinese participants. Genotyping was performed using TaqMan allelic discrimination assays, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS. Results No association was found between OCT4 and IL-18 gene polymorphisms and prostate cancer susceptibility. For OCT4 AA and IL-18-607 CC genotypes, there was a significant association with higher tumor grade(P = 0.03 and P = 0.025) and stage(P = 0.04 and P = 0.001). The OCT4 and IL-18-137 GG genotype was correlated with higher tumor grade(P = 0.028) and stage(P = 0.008). Furthermore, OCT4 AA was significantly more frequent in patients with lymph node metastasis(P = 0.02) and distant metastasis(P = 0.01). The Cox proportional hazard model showed that tumor grade and stage grouping were independent prognostic factors but IL-18 and OCT4 polymorphisms were not. Conclusion The OCT4 gene may have a profound effect on prostate cancer risk. Polymorphism variants in the IL-18(IL-18-607 and IL-18-137) and OCT4 genes may be associated with poor prognoses for individuals with prostate cancer. | Shaojun Nong Yangbo Guan Zhiwei Wang Zhongqing Wei Yueping Zhang Jian Ni Chongsheng He Limin Ma Shujun Zhou Wenguang Li | 2019 | Oncology and Translational Medicine2019,5,3: | 2

Remodeling of the osteoimmune microenvironment after biomaterials implantation in murine tibia: Single-cell transcriptome analysis显示文摘Osseointegration seems to be a foreign body reaction equilibrium due to the complicated interactions between the immune and skeletal systems. The heterogeneity of the osteoimmune microenvironment in the osseointegration of implant materials remains elusive. Here,a single-cell study involving 40043 cells is conducted, and a total of 10 distinct cell clusters are identified from five different groups.A preliminary description of the osteoimmune microenvironment revealed the diverse cellular heterogeneity and dynamic changes modulated by implant properties. The increased immature neutrophils,Ly6C+CCR2hi monocytes, and S100a8hi macrophages induce an aggressive inflammatory response and eventually lead to the formation of fibrous capsule around the stainless steel implant. The enrichment of mature neutrophils,FcgR1hi and differentiated immunomodulatory macrophages around the titanium implant indicates favorable osseointegration under moderate immune response.Neutrophil-depletion mice are conducted to explore the role of neutrophils in osseointegration.Neutrophils may improve bone formation by enhancing the recruitment of BMSCs via the CXCL12/CXCR3 signal axis. These findings contribute to a better knowledge of osteoimmunology and are valuable for the design and modification of‘osteoimmune-smart’biomaterials in the bone regeneration field. | Jia Li Congrui Zhao Yangbo Xu Lu Song Yanqi Chen Yuzi Xu Yang Ma Siyuan Wang Antian Xu Fuming He | 2023 | Bioactive Materials2023,,4: | 0
