1Origin of Taiwan Canyon and its effects on deepwater sediment显示文摘The continental slope of the Taiwan Shoal, which has cultivated numerous submarine canyons, is located in a passive continental margin environment. However, the trend of the Taiwan Canyon, with its 45° intersection angle, is obviously different from that of the erosion valley downward along the continental slope. A distinct break is present in the lower segment of the Taiwan Canyon, which then extends from west to east parallel to the continental slope until finally joining the Manila Trench. By utilizing multiple-beam water depth data, high-resolution seismic data, and sediment cores, this study describes the topographic characteristics of the Taiwan Canyon and provides a preliminary discussion on the origin of the Taiwan Canyon and its effect on deepwater sediment. The terrain, landform, and sediment of the Taiwan Canyon exhibit segmentation characteristics. The upper segment is characterized primarily by erosion, downward cutting with a V shape, and wide development of sliding, slumping, and other gravity flow types. The middle segment is characterized mostly by U-shaped erosion-sedimentation transition and development of an inner levee. The lower segment is characterized primarily by sedimentation and development of a sediment wave. The bottom current has a significant reworking effect on the interior sediments of the canyon and forms reworked sands. The formation and evolution of the Taiwan Canyon is closely related to sediment supply, gravity sliding(slumping), faulting activities, and submarine impaling. Given the sufficient terrigenous clastic supply, the sediments along the continental shelf edge continuously proceed seaward; gliding and slumping in the front edge provide driving forces for the formation of the canyon. Faulting activities result in stratum crushing, and the gravity flow takes priority in eroding the relatively fragile stratum. Thus, the direction of the extension of the canyon crosses the surrounding erosion valley obliquely. Seamounts are formed through submarine impaling. Owing to seamount blocking, the lower segment of the canyon is turned toward the east–west direction. Large amounts of sediments overflow at the turning, forming sediment waves.XU Shang WANG YingMin PENG XueChao ZOU HuaYao QIU Yan GONG ChengLin ZHUO HaiTeng 2014Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,11:2

10Oridonin inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication by targeting viral proteinase and polymerase显示文摘COVID-19 has become a global public health crisis since its outbreak in China in December 2019.Currently there are few clinically effective drugs to combat SARS-CoV-2 infection. The main protein(M^(pro)),papain-like protease(PL^(pro))and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase(RdRp)of SARS-CoV-2 are involved in the viral replication, and might be prospective targets for anti-coronavirus drug development. Here,we investigated the antiviral activity of oridonin,a natural small-molecule compound, against SARS-CoV-2 infection in vitro. The time-of-addition analysis showed that oridonin efficiently inhibited SARS-CoV-2 infection by interfering with the genome replication at the post-entry stage.Mechanistically, the inhibition of viral replication by oridonin depends on the oxidation activity ofα,β-unsaturated carbonyl.Further experiments showed that oridonin not only effectively inhibited SARS-CoV-2 Mpro activity, but also had some inhibitory effects on PLpro-mediated deubiquitinating and viral polymerase-catalyzed RNA elongation activities at high concentrations. In particular, oridonin could inhibit the bat SARS-like CoV and the newly emerged SARS-CoV-2 omicron variants(BA.1 and BA.2),which highlights its potential as a pan-coronavirus antiviral agent.Overall, our data provide strong evidence that oridonin is an efficient antiviral agent against SARS-CoV-2 infection.Zherui Zhang Hongqing Zhang Yanan Zhang Qiuyan Zhang Qiaojie Liu Yanyan Hu Xiaoling Chen Jing Wang Yujia Shi Chenglin Deng Peng Gong Bo Zhang Xiaodan Li Bing Zhu Hanqing Ye 2023Virologica Sinica2023,38,3:0
11Forward-modeling of co-evolution of turbidity currents, sediment transport, and cyclic steps in the Rio Muni Basin显示文摘Previous quantitative studies of field-scale cyclic steps are mostly based on analysis of field data.Such studies have shed light on the erosion/deposition patterns over these morphological features as well as the magnitudes of the turbidity current parameters back estimated using the measured geometry data. However,it remains unclear to what extent such back estimated hydraulic features and erosion/deposition patterns can be numerically reproduced by process-based numerical models. Here,a twodimensional layer-averaged fully coupled turbidity current model is applied to forward-model co-evolution of turbidity currents, sediment transport, and cyclic steps in the Rio Muni Basin off the West Africa margin, where nine cyclic steps featuring a transition from the upstream erosion to the downstream deposition were identified.Numerical case studies indicate that large and bankfull turbidity currents do not form the erosion-deposition transition because they are likely to fall into the high-speed regime that favors whole-scale erosion. In this regard, threshold values for the current velocity were derived to distinguish high/low-speed regimes of turbidity currents. It is shown that smaller turbidity currents, which do not follow the bankfull assumption, and, thus, fall into the low-speed turbidity current regime, may produce cyclic steps by current deceleration. While values of the derived physical parameters of the smaller turbidity current differ quantitatively from those of previous back estimated values, their qualitative variation trends are basically the same.Peng Hu Yue Li Chenglin Gong Wei Li 2023International Journal of Sediment Research2023,38,2:0
