1Quality and Crop Yield Potential of Moderately Degraded Alfisols Under Different Nutrient Inputs and Cropping Patterns显示文摘Crop performance on degraded soil needs special management practices to overcome soil quality limitations. In a 2-year(from summer 2006 to winter 2007–2008) field trial on a moderately degraded Alfisol in Swabi District(34°7′12′′N, 72°28′20′′E), Pakistan,the effects of three cropping patterns, cereal-cereal(CC), cereal-legume(CL), and cereal-cereal and legume intercrop(CLI), were tested in main plots under four fertilization treatments in sub-plots, including no fertilization(control), farmers' practice(FP, 60:45 kg ha^(-1) N:P_2O_5), recommended dose(RD, 120:90:60 kg ha^(-1) N:P_2O_5:K_2O), and integrated nutrient management(INM, 20 t ha^(-1) farmyard manure integrated with 50% N, 100% P, and K of recommended dose), using a split-plot randomized complete block design. The performance of CL was superior than CC in plant height, leaf area index(LAI), cob length, grain yield, biological yield, and grain protein(8%, 26%, 8%, 5%, 10%, and 8% increases, respectively), while CLI confirmed significant improvement only in LAI(25%) over CC. Response to nutrient inputs from all sources was in the order of INM > RD > FP > control, and the maximum net economic return by INM(23% and 2.5 times higher than RD and FP, respectively) indicated severe deficiency of both macro-and micro-nutrients in the soil as well as degraded physical properties. Increases in soil organic matter, total N, total mineral N, available P and K, total porosity, and available water-holding capacity by 6%, 34%, 24%, 50%, 13%, 5%, and 7%, respectively, and decrease in soil bulk density by 4% after four crop seasons indicated optimistic changes in soil quality as a result of the combined effects of fertilization from organic and inorganic sources and legumes within crop rotation. This study suggests that keeping the soil covered under cereal-legume rotation crops all year round and treatment with INM(50% N from organic source and 50% from inorganic source) are the best management practice for sustained production on degraded Alfisols.Wiqar AHMAD Farmanullah KHAN Zahir SHAH Muhammad Jamal KHAN 2019Pedosphere2019,29,2:2

3Effects of 3, 4-Dihydroxyacetophenone on Cytosolic Calcium in Pulmonary Artery Endothelial and Smooth Muscle Cells during Acute Hypoxia显示文摘Summary: The effects of 3, 4-Dihydroxyacetophenone (3, 4-DHAP) on cytosolic free calcium [Ca^2+ ]_i in pulmonary artery endothelia (PAECs) and smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) during acute hypoxia were studied. Porcine pulmonary artery endothelial and smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) were cultured primarily, and they were divided into 4 groups: groups incubated under normoxia or hypoxia and those with or without treatment with 3, 4-DHAP. The [Ca^2+ ]_i of both PAECs and PASMCs was measured by determining the fluorescence of fura 2 AM on spetrofluorometer. Our results showed that hypoxia caused significant elevation of [Ca^2+ ]_i, in both PAECs and PASMCs, 3, 4-DHAP could attenuate the hypoxic elevation of [Ca^2+ ]_i only in PASMCs but not in PAECs. It is concluded that 3, 4-DHAP decreases the hypoxic elevation of [Ca^2+ ]_i in PASMCs. 6Robust iris biometric system for visible wavelength data显示文摘Commercial iris biometric systems exhibit good performance for near-infrared(NIR) images but poor performance for visible wavelength(VW) data.To address this problem,we propose an iris biometric system for VW data.The system includes localizing iris boundaries that use bimodal thresholding,Euclidean distance transform(EDT),and a circular pixel counting scheme(CPCS).Eyelids are localized using a parabolic pixel counting scheme(PPCS),and eyelashes,light reflections,and skin parts are adaptively detected using image intensity.Features are extracted using the log Gabor filter,and finally,matching is performed using Hamming distance(HD).The experimental results on UBIRIS and CASIA show that the proposed technique outperforms contemporary approaches.Farmanullah Jan Imran Usman Shahid A. 7Reliable iris localization using integral projection function and 2D-shape properties显示文摘Iris recognition technology recognizes a human based on his/her iris pattern.However,the accuracy of the iris recognition technology depends on accurate iris localization.Localizing a pupil region in the presence of other low-intensity regions,such as hairs,eyebrows,and eyelashes,is a challenging task.This study proposes an iris localization technique that includes a localizing pupillary boundary in a sub-image by using an integral projection function and two-dimensional shape properties(e.g.,area,geometry,and circularity).The limbic boundary is localized using gradients and an error distance transform,and the boundary is regularized with active contours.Experimental results obtained from public databases show the superiority of the proposed technique over contemporary methods.Farmanullah Jan Imran Usman Shahrukh Agha 2012Chinese Optics Letters2012,10,11:0
