1Polarization-maintaining few mode fiber composed of a central circular-hole and an elliptical-ring core显示文摘We propose a novel waveguide design of polarization-maintaining few mode fiber(PM-FMF) supporting ≥10non-degenerate modes, utilizing a central circular air hole and a circumjacent elliptical-ring core. The structure endows a new degree of freedom to adjust the birefringence of all the guided modes, including the fundamental polarization mode. Numerical simulations demonstrate that, by optimizing the air hole and elliptical-ring core,a PM-FMF supporting 10 distinctive polarization modes has been achieved, and the effective index difference Δn_(eff) between the adjacent guided modes could be kept larger than 1.32 × 10^(-4) over the whole C +L band. 3Effects of vegetation cover on recruitment of Ulmus pumila L. in Horqin Sandy Land, northeastern China显示文摘Understanding the effects of vegetation cover on seedling survival is helpful for promoting vegetation restoration in environmentally fragile zones. This study was conducted in the desertified, moving sand dunes of Horqin Sandy Land, Inner Mongolia, northeastern China. We hyphothesized that(1) seed density(i.e., number/m2) increases as vegetation cover increases, and(2) there will be more surviving seedlings in locations with higher vegetation covers. Total vegetation cover and initial densities of seeds, germinated seeds and surviving seedlings of Ulmus pumilia were evaluated under various vegetation covers in trying to clarify the effects of vegetation cover on the early stages of the plant life history. In agreement with the first hypothesis, initial seed densities were greater(P<0.05) under higher vegetation covers. The relationship between vegetation cover and initial seed density was represented by a quadratic regression, where a threshold occurred with a vegetation cover of 36%(P<0.05). The higher total vegetation covers, however, did not result in increased densities of germinated seeds(P>0.05), which on average represented 16.7% of initial seed densities. Even more, three months after the study initiation, total vegetation covers were similar(P>0.05) at all positions in the dunes, and they determined a similar number(P>0.05) of surviving seedlings at those positions(i.e. the second hypothesis had to be rejected). The mean number of seed- lings that survived at all positions was only 4.5% of germinated seeds. The number of surviving elm seedlings(0 to 1.7 seedlings/m2) under various vegetations covers(12.2% to 20.8%) at all dune positions by late summer would most likely not contribute to vegetation restoration in the study area.DeMing JIANG Yi TANG Carlos A BUSSO 2014Journal of Arid Land2014,6,3:5
4Overfitting effect of artificial neural network based nonlinear equalizer: from mathematical origin to transmission evolution显示文摘Overfitting effect of artificial neural network(ANN)based nonlinear equalizer(NLE)leads to a trap of bit error ratio(BER)overestimation in optical fiber communication system,especially when the performance is evaluated by the commonly-used pseudo-random binary sequence(PRBS).First,we mathematically investigate the PRBS generation and Gray code mapping rules,in comparison with the use of Mersenne Twister random sequence(MTRS).Under the condition of a symbol erasure channel,we identify that ANN can recognize both the PRBS generation and symbol mapping rules,by increasing the weights of NLE at specific positions,whereas the MTRS is currently safe owing to the limited input length of current ANN based NLE.Then,we design four channel models of fiber optical transmission to experimentally examine various impairments on the evolution of overfitting effect.When both the additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN)channel and the bandwidth limited channel are considered,the mitigation of overfitting becomes possible by the use of pruned PRBS(P-PRBS)training set with removing the generation and mapping rules determined input symbols.However,as for both the chromatic dispersion(CD)uncompensated channel and the CD managed channel,the overfitting effect becomes serious,because both CD and fiber nonlinearity induced inter-symbol interference(ISI)is beneficial for ANN to identify the PRBS symbol rules.Finally,possible solutions to mitigate the overfitting effect are summarized.Zheng YANG Fan GAO Songnian FU Ming TANG Deming LIU 2020Science China(Information Sciences)2020,63,6:2
