1Adsorption of Mn^(2+) from aqueous solution using Fe and Mn oxide-coated sand显示文摘The adsorption of Mn2+ onto immobilized Mn-oxide and Fe-oxide adsorbent such as manganese oxide-coated sand 1 (MOCS1), manganese oxide-coated sand2 (MOCS2), iron oxide-coated sand2 (IOCS2), and manganese and iron oxide-coated sand (MIOCS)was investigated. The effects of pH (5.5 to 8.0) and temperature (25 to45°C) on the equilibrium capacitywere examined. Equilibrium studies showed that there is a good fitwith both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm,which indicates surface heterogeneity and monolayer adsorption of the adsorbents. Kineticdata showed high correlationwith the pseudo second-order model,which signifies a chemisorption-controlled mechanism. The activation energies, activation parameters (ΔG*,ΔH*,ΔS*), and thermodynamic parameters (ΔG0 , ΔH0 , ΔS0 ) confirmed that adsorptionwith MIOCSwas endothermic and more spontaneous at higher temperaturewhile an opposite trendwas observed for the other adsorbents. 2Photocatalytic degradation of paraquat using nano-sized Cu-TiO_2 /SBA-15 under UV and visible light显示文摘Photocatalytic degradation of paraquat using mesoporous-assembled Cu-TiO2 /SBA15 under UV and visible light was investigated.The catalyst was synthesized by impregnation of Cu-TiO2 colloids onto SBA-15.The colloids of Cu-TiO2 were prepared via solgel method while the mesoporous support was prepared using hydrothermal technique.The catalyst was characterized using X-ray diffraction,nitrogen adsorption-desorption,transmission electron microscopy,UV diffuse reflectance spectroscopy,Zeta potential and X-ray adsorption spectroscopy.Results from characterizations showed that Cu doped TiO2 had a small crystalline size and was welldispersed on SBA-15.The inclusion of SBA-15 significantly enhanced the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst.Among the three types of undoped catalyst in this study (P25,TiO2,TiO_2 /SBA-15),TiO2 /SBA-15 yielded the highest degradation of paraquat for all pH under UV illumination.Meanwhile 2 wt.% Cu-TiO2 /SBA-15 yielded the highest activity under visible light.Maurice G.Sorolla II Maria Lourdes Dalida Pongtanawat Khemthong Nurak Grisdanurak 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,6:6
3Retinopathy in non diabetics, diabetic retinopathy and oxidative stress: a new phenotype in Central Africa?显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the rates of retinopathy without diabetes and diabetic retinopathy(DR),associated with some markers of oxidative stress,antioxidants and cardiometabolic risk factors.METHODS:We determined the prevalence of DR in 150type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)patients,that of retinopathy in 50 non diabetics,the levels of body mass index(BMI),waist circumference(WC),blood pressure,lipids,8-isoprostane,8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine(8-oHdG),gamma-glutamyl transferase(GGT),oxidized low density lipoprotein(LDL)(OxLDL),thiobarbituric acid reacting substances(TBARS),reduced glutathione(GSH),superoxide dismutase(SOD),uric acid,creatinine,albumin,total antioxidant status(TAOS),zinc,selenium,magnesium,vitamin C,vitamin D,vitamin E,glucose,apolipoprotein B(ApoB).RESULTS:The prevalences of DR at 53y and Rtp at62y were 44%(n=66)and 10%(n=5),respectively.Thehighest levels of 8-isoprostane,8-OHdG,TBARS,SOD,and OxLDL were in DR.The lowest levels of vitamin D,vitamin C,TAOS,and vitamin E were in DR.In the casecontrol study discriminant analysis,the levels of vitamin C,vitamin D,ApoB,8-OHdG,creatinine,Zn,vitamin E,and WC distinguished significantly non-diabetics without DR(controls),T2DM patients without DR and T2DM patients with DR.CONCLUSION:Anticipation of DR onset is significantly associated with the exageration of oxidative stress biomarkers or decrease of antioxidants in African type 2diabetics.Prevention of oxidative stress and abdominal obesity is needed.Supplementation in vitamin C,D,and E should be recommended as complement therapies of T2DM.Benjamin Longo-Mbenza Moise Mvitu Muaka Wayiza Masamba Lucien Muizila Kini Igor Longo Phemba Dalida Kibokela Ndembe Doris Tulomba Mona 2014International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2014,7,2:4
4Oxidative stress-elevated high gamma glutamyl transferase levels, and aging, intake of tropical food plants, migration and visual disability in Central Africans显示文摘·AIM:To investigate the independent pathogenic role of high serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels, sociodemographic data, dietary and environmental risk factors for visual disability (VD). ·METHODS:This was a case-control study, run in 200 black Congolese patients managed in Saint Joseph Hospital Ophthalmology Division from Kinshasa town. Logistic regression model was used to identify determinants of VD (n = 58) among sex, age, cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse, rural-urban migration, education levels, aging ≥60 years, intake of red Beans, Safou fruit and Taro leaves, lipid profile, residence, socioeconomic status, and GGT. ·RESULTS:After adjusting for confounding factors, we identified migration (OR=3.7 95% CI:1.2-11.3; P =0.023), low education level (OR=3.1 95% CI 1.1-8.5; P =0.026), no intake of Safou fruit (OR=34.2 95% CI 11.5-102; P < 0.0001), age ≥60 years (OR=2.5 95% CI 1.01-6.5; P = 0.049), and serum GGT ≥10U/L (OR=3.6 95% CI 1.3-9.6; P = 0.012) as the significant and independent determinants of VD. ·CONCLUSION:VD appears as a major public health problem in Central Africa to be prevented or delayed by control of migration, lifestyle changes, antioxidant supplements, appropriate diet, nutrition education, and blocking of oxidative stress.Benjamin Longo-Mbenza Mose Mvitu Muaka Etienne Mokondjimobe Dalida Kibokela Ndembe Doris Tulomba Mona Baudouin Buassabu-bu-Tsumbu 2012International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2012,5,4:2
