Battery Technologies for Grid-Level Large-Scale Electrical Energy Storage显示文摘Grid-level large-scale electrical energy storage(GLEES) is an essential approach for balancing the supply–demand of electricity generation, distribution, and usage. Compared with conventional energy storage methods, battery technologies are desirable energy storage devices for GLEES due to their easy modularization, rapid response, flexible installation, and short construction cycles. In general, battery energy storage technologies are expected to meet the requirements of GLEES such as peak shaving and load leveling, voltage and frequency regulation, and emergency response, which are highlighted in this perspective. Furthermore, several types of battery technologies, including lead–acid, nickel–cadmium, nickel–metal hydride, sodium–sulfur, lithium-ion, and flow batteries, are discussed in detail for the application of GLEES. Moreover, some possible developing directions to facilitate efforts in this area are presented to establish a perspective on battery technology, provide a road map for guiding future studies, and promote the commercial application of batteries for GLEES. | Xiayue Fan Bin Liu Jie Liu Jia Ding Xiaopeng Han Yida Deng Xiaojun Lv Ying Xie Bing Chen Wenbin Hu Cheng Zhong | 2020 | Transactions of Tianjin University2020,26,2: | 11
Heterogeneous lamellar-edged Fe-Ni(OH)_(2)/Ni_(3)S_(2)nanoarray for efficient and stable seawater oxidation显示文摘Development of efficient non-precious catalysts for seawater electrolysis is of great significance but challenging due to the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction(OER)and the impairment of chlorine electrochemistry at anode.Herein,we report a heterostructure of Ni_(3)S_(2)nanoarray with secondary Fe-Ni(OH)_(2)lamellar edges that exposes abundant active sites towards seawater oxidation. The resultant Fe-Ni(OH)_(2)/Ni_(3)S_(2)nanoarray works directly as a free-standing anodic electrode in alkaline artificial seawater. It only requires an overpotential of 269 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA·cm^(-2)and the Tafel slope is as low as 46 m V·dec^(-1).The 27-hour chronopotentiometry operated at high current density of 100 mA·cm^(-2)shows negligible deterioration, suggesting good stability of the Fe-Ni(OH)_(2)/Ni_(3)S_(2)@NF electrode.Faraday efficiency for oxygen evolution is up to〜95%,revealing decent selectivity of the catalyst in saline water.Such desirable catalytic performance could be benefitted from the introduction of Fe activator and the heterostructure that offers massive active and selective sites. The density functional theory(DFT)calculations indicate that the OER has lower theoretical overpotential than Cl_(2) evolution reaction in Fe sites, which is contrary to that of Ni sites. The experimental and theoretical study provides a strong support for the rational design of high-performance Fe-based electrodes for industrial seawater electrolysis. | Baihua Cui Zheng Hu Chang Liu Siliang Liu Fangshuai Chen Shi Hu Jinfeng Zhang Wei Zhou Yida Deng Zhenbo Qin Zhong Wu Yanan Chen Lifeng Cui Wenbin Hu | 2021 | Nano Research2021,14,4: | 7
Thermal Shock-Activated Spontaneous Growing of Nanosheets for Overall Water Splitting显示文摘Nanomaterials based on nickel foam(NF) have been widely applied in energy conversion and storage field.Traditional synthesis methods such as hydrothermal method which is dangerous and high cost limited the scalable developments.Herein,we report a fast, simple, and low-cost synthesis method of nanomaterials based on NF by Joule-heating and water soaking treatment.Thin carbon-coated CoS on NF(NF-C/CoS) was synthesized by Joule-heating for a few seconds with rapid cooling. And then,NF-C/CoS/NiOOH with core-shell heterostructure was fabricated by soaking treatment of NF-C/CoS in water on which NiOOH nanosheets grew spontaneously. The formation mechanism is proposed that the coordination complex precursor converts into C/CoS on NF driven by Joule-heating,and the nickel on the surface of NF is activated to form metastable nickel simultaneously. The metastable nickel reacting with water leads to the formation of NiOOH,and the induction of CoS makes NiOOH grow continuously. This synthesis technology provides a new route to manufacture NF-based nanostructures, and the as-fabricated NF-C/CoS/NiOOH exhibits great potential as electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction. | Han Wu Qi Lu Jinfeng Zhang Jiajun Wang Xiaopeng Han Naiqin Zhao Wenbin Hu Jiajun Li Yanan Chen Yida Deng | 2020 | Nano-Micro Letters2020,12,11: | 6
Carbon-based cathode materials for rechargeable zinc-air batteries: From current collectors to bifunctional integrated air electrodes显示文摘Rechargeable zinc-air batteries(ZABs)have attracted much attention as the next-generation energy conversion and storage devices due to the abundance and environmental friendliness of zinc(Zn)for anode materials,as well as the safety and low cost of aqueous electrolytes. However, rational design of nonprecious and low-cost integrated air cathode materials with a desirable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic performance remains a great challenge for the commercialization of rechargeable ZABs.In previous research studies, various cost-effective carbon-supported electrocatalysts and light-weight carbon-based current collectors for air cathodes have been developed, showing vast potential in the application of carbon-based materials. To improve the bifunctional performance and integration of air cathodes, efforts with respect to the design of morphology, defects, and synergistic effects of carbon-based materials have been made.In this perspective, the general understanding of the air cathode construction and the battery working mechanism is discussed. The recent progress in the design of carbon-based materials for air cathodes in rechargeable ZABs is summarized.Several possible future research directions and the expected development trends are also discussed, aiming to facilitate the commercialization of advanced rechargeable ZABs in our life. | Jingkun Wu Bin Liu Xiayue Fan Jia Ding Xiaopeng Han Yida Deng Wenbin Hu Cheng Zhong | 2020 | Carbon Energy2020,2,3: | 4
Hierarchical yolk-shell structured Li-rich cathode boosting cycling and voltage stabled LIBs显示文摘Despite the high energy density of lithium-rich(Li-rich)cathodes,their implementation is hampered by the unsatisfied rate capacity and poor cycling performance accompanied with substantial voltage decay. To address these issues, the hierarchical yolk-shell structured Li_(1.2)Mn_(0.54)Ni_(0.13)Co_(0.13)O_(2)cathodes(YK-LMNCO)was proposed and synthesized through a facile glycerol assisted solvothermal approach and the following lithiation process.Benefitting from the shortened lithium diffusion lengths and the enhanced tolerance to the large volume variation upon lithium ions intercalation/de-intercalation,the unique structure reciprocates an initial coulombic efficiency of 85.8%,an outstanding capacity retention rate of 89.1%after cycling at 2.0 C for 200 cycles with a minor voltage drop, and a capacity retention rate of 93.8%after cycling at 10.0 C for 500 cycles,85.2%for 1,000 cycles. When assembled with graphite as anode, the YK-LMNCO//graphite full cell shows a remarkable capacity retention rate of 87.2%after cycling at 5.0 C for 50 cycles. Our facile strategy for constructing the yolk-shell structured Li-rich cathodes with high capacity and voltage stability sheds light on synthesizing other lithium storage materials. | Yanchen Liu Yafen Chen Jing Wang Wei Wang Zhiyu Ding Leyuan Li Yang Zhang Yida Deng JunweiWu Yanan Chen | 2022 | Nano Research2022,15,4: | 3
Stable confinement of Fe/Fe_(3)C in Fe,N-codoped carbon nanotube towards robust zinc-air batteries显示文摘Catalytic oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)and oxygen evolution reaction(OER)have garnered great attention as the key character in metal-air batteries.Herein,we developed a superior nonprecious bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst, fabricated through spatial confinement of Fe/Fe_(3)C nanocrystals in pyridinic N and Fe-Nx rich carbon nanotubes(Fe/Fe_(3)C-N-CNTs).During ORR,the resultant electrocatalyst exhibits positive onset pote ntial of 1.0 V(vs.RHE),large half-wave potentials of 0.88 V(vs.RHE),which is more positive than Pt/C(0.98 V and 0.83 V,respectively).Remarkably,Fe/Fe_(3)C-N-CNTs exhibits outstanding durability and great methanol tolerance, exceeding Pt/C and most reported nonprecious metal-based oxygen reduction electrocatalysts.Moreover,Fe/Fe_(3)C-N-CNTs show a markedly low potential at j=10 mA/cm^(2),small Tafel slopes and extremely high stability for OER.Impressively, the Fe/Fe_(3)C-N-CNTs-based Zn-air batteries demonstrate high power density of 183 mW/cm^(2)and robust charge/discharge stability. It is revealed that the spatial confinement effect can impede the aggregation and corrosion of Fe/Fe_(3)C nanocrystals.Meanwhile,Fe/Fe_(3)C and Fe-Nx play synergistic effect on boosting the ORR/OER activity, which provides an important guideline for construction of inexpensive nonprecious metal-carbon hybrid nanomaterials. | Lingbo Zong Xin Chen Shuming Dou Kaicai Fan Zumin Wang Wenjun Zhang Yunmei Du Jie Xu Xiaofei Jia Qi Zhang Xia Li Yida Deng Yanan Chen Lei Wang | 2021 | Chinese Chemical Letters2021,32,3: | 2
Engineering cobalt sulfide/oxide heterostructure with atomically mixed interfaces for synergistic electrocatalytic water splitting显示文摘It remains challenging to develop economical and bifunctional electrocatalysts toward oxygen/hydrogen evolution reactions(OER/HER).Herein,we construct Co_(9)S_(8) nanoflakes decorated Co_(3)O_(4) nanoarrays with enriched heterogeneous interface zones on Ni foam(Co_(9)S_(8)@CO_(3)O_(4)/NF)via a novel step-wise approach. The Co_(9)S_(8)@Co_(3)O_(4)/NF hybrid manifests excellent performance with low overpotentials of 130 mV for HER(10 mA·cm^(-2))and 331 mV for OER(100 mA·cm^(-2)),delivering a small voltage of 1.52 V for water splitting at 10 mA·cm^(-2) as well as outstanding catalytic durability, which surpasses precious metals and previously reported earth-abundant nanocatalysts.Further experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the excellent performance is attributed to the followings:(i)Highly conductive Ni facilitates the efficient charge transfer;(ii)porous core-shell nanoarchitecture benefits the infiltration and transportation of gases/ions;(iii)heterogeneous interface zones synergistically lower the chemisorption energy of hydrogen/oxygen intermediates. This work will shed light on the controllable synthesis and engineering of heterostructure nanomaterials for clean energy storage and conversion technologies. | Xiaoyang Wang Yu He Xiaopeng Han Jun Zhao Lanlan Li Jinfeng Zhang Cheng Zhong Yida Deng Wenbin Hu | 2022 | Nano Research2022,15,2: | 2
Development of Metal and Metal-Based Composites Anode Materials for Potassium-Ion Batteries显示文摘Potassium-ion batteries(KIBs)are considered the next powerful potential generation energy storage system because of substantial potassium resource availability and similar characteristics with lithium.Unfortunately, the actual application of KIBs is inferior to that of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs),in which the fi nite energy density, ordinary circular life, and underdeveloped fabrication technique dominate the key constraints.Various works have recently been directed to growing novel anode electrodes with superior electrochemical capability.Noticeably,metals/metal oxides materials(e.g.,Sb,Sn,Zn,SnO_(2),and MoO_(2))have been widely investigated as KIBs anodes because of high theoretical capacity, suggesting outstanding promise for high-energy KIBs.In this review, the latest research of metals/metal oxides electrodes for potassium storage is summarized. The major strategies to control the electrochemical property of metals/metal oxides electrodes are discussed. Finally, the future investigation foreground for these anode electrodes has been proposed. | Jie Xu Shuming Dou Yaqi Wang Qunyao Yuan Yida Deng Yanan Chen | 2021 | Transactions of Tianjin University2021,27,3: | 1

Ultrafine Fe/Fe3C decorated on Fe-N_(x)-C as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for efficient Zn-air batteries显示文摘Efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for ORR and OER are fundamental to the development of high performance metal-air batteries.Herein,a facile cost-efficient two-step pyrolysis strategy for the fabrication of a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst has been proposed. The efficient non-preciousmetal-based electrocatalyst,Fe/Fe_(3)C@Fe-N_(x)-C consists of highly curved onion-like carbon shells that encapsulate Fe/Fe_(3)C nanoparticles, distributed on an extensively porous graphitic carbon aerogel. The obtained Fe/Fe_(3)C@Fe-N_(x)-C aerogel exhibited superb electrochemical activity, excellent durability, and high methanol tolerance. The experimental results indicated that the assembly of onion-like carbon shells with encapsulated Fe/Fe_(3)C yielded highly curved carbon surfaces with abundant Fe-Nxactive sites,a porous structure, and enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards ORR and OER,hence displaying promising potential for application as an air cathode in rechargeable Zn-air batteries. The constructed Zn-air battery possessed an exceptional peak power density of~147 mW cm^(-2),outstanding cycling stability(200 cycles,1 h per cycle),and a small voltage gap of 0.87 V.This study offers valuable insights regarding the construction of low-cost and highly active bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for efficient air batteries. | Lingbo Zong Xin Chen Siliang Liu Kaicai Fan Shuming Dou Jie Xu Xiaoxian Zhao Wenjun Zhang Yaowen Zhang Weicui Wu Fenghong Lu Lixiu Cui Xiaofei Jia Qi Zhang Yu Yang Jian Zhao Xia Li Yida Deng Yanan Chen Lei Wang | 2021 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2021,30,5: | 1
