1Effects of Microstructure on the Tensile, Fracture Toughness and Fatigue Behaviour of Gamma Titanium Aluminides显示文摘The effects of microstructure on the deformation and fracture behaviour of two-phase TiAl alloys were investjgated under monotonic and cyclical loading conditions, over a range of temperatu res.The tensile behaviour is analyzed for deformation temperatures between RT and 950℃, Fracture resistance behaviour and toughening mechanisms at RT and 800℃ are analyzed. and the inverse relationship botween ductility and toughness is explained using the crack initiation toughness. 3Translating auxin responses into ovules, seeds and yield: Insight from Arabidopsis and the cereals显示文摘Grain production in cereal crops depends on the stable formation of male and female gametes in the flower.In most angiosperms, the female gamete is produced from a germline located deep within the ovary, protected by several layers of maternal tissue, including the ovary wall,ovule integuments and nucellus. In the field, germline formation and floret fertility are major determinants of yield potential, contributing to traits such as seed number,weight and size. As such, stimuli affecting the timing and duration of reproductive phases, as well as the viability,size and number of cells within reproductive organs can significantly impact yield. One key stimulant is the phytohormone auxin, which influences growth and morphogenesis of female tissues during gynoecium development, gametophyte formation, and endosperm cellularization. In this review we consider the role of the auxin signaling pathway during ovule and seed development, first in the context of Arabidopsis and then in the cereals. We summarize the gene families involved and highlight distinct expression patterns that suggest a range of roles in reproductive cell specification and fate. 4State of the science and challenges of breeding landscape plants with ecological function显示文摘Exotic plants dominate esthetically-managed landscapes,which cover 30–40 million hectares in the United States alone.Recent ecological studies have found that landscaping with exotic plant species can reduce biodiversity on multiple trophic levels.To support biodiversity in urbanized areas,the increased use of native landscaping plants has been advocated by conservation groups and US federal and state agencies.A major challenge to scaling up the use of native species in landscaping is providing ornamental plants that are both ecologically functional and economically viable.Depending on ecological and economic constraints,accelerated breeding approaches could be applied to ornamental trait development in native plants.This review examines the impact of landscaping choices on biodiversity,the current status of breeding and selection of native ornamental plants,and the interdisciplinary research needed to scale up landscaping plants that can support native biodiversity.H Dayton Wilde Kamal J K Gandhi Gregory Colson 2015Horticulture Research2015,2,1:2

6An OGCM Simulation of Seasonal and Interannual Variabilities in the Surface-Layer Pacific of the Equatorial Band显示文摘The heat budget is analyzed in the surface-layer (0-50 m) Pacific of the equatorial band (10°S-10°N), using the simulation of an ocean general circulation model from 1945 to 1993. The analysis indicates that downward net surface heat flux from the atmosphere and ocean advective heat fluxes play distinct roles in seasonal and interannual variabilities of surface-layer ocean temperature. The surface heat flux dominantly determines the ocean temperature in the seasonal time-scale. But, it has a negative feedback to the ocean temperature in the interannual time-scale. The interannual variability of ocean temperature is largely associated with the cold advection from off-equatorial divergent flow in the central Pacific and from upwelling in the cold tongue. Both the surface heat flux and ocean advective heat fluxes are important to the ocean temperature during an El Nino event. The ocean. advective heat fluxes are further associated with local westward trade wind in the central Pacific.
