1Determining factors in potential evapotranspiration changes over China in the period 1971-2008显示文摘Potential evapotranspiration(ETo) is important to hydrological cycling and the global energy balance.Based on a modified FAO56-Penman-Monteith model,ETo was simulated for 603 meteorological stations across China in the period 1971-2008.Spatial distribution and temporal change of ETo were characterized,and the determining factors in ETo were revealed by sensitivity analysis.Results show obvious regional differences in annual average ETo and its determining factor.In general,annual average ETo decreased in the period 1971-2008,but increased since the 1990s.Wind speed and sunshine duration were determining factors in the annual ETo trend,with smaller contributions from relative humidity and temperature.Declining wind speed was the determining factor in decreasing annual ETo in northern temperate regions and the Tibetan Plateau.The spatial extent of wind speed influence contracted to northwest China in summer,and expanded to the whole country in autumn.Decreasing sunshine duration was the determining factor in decreasing annual ETo in subtropical and tropical regions,especially in summer,with a larger spatial influence mainly to the southeast of the farming-pastoral region.ETo change has distinct impacts on earth surface ecosystems and environment depending on different determining factors.YIN YunHe WU ShaoHong DAI ErFu 2010Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,29:53

4Ecosystem vulnerability of China under B2 climate scenario in the 21st century显示文摘This paper applies climate change scenarios in China based on the SRES assumptions with the help of RCMs projections by PRECIS (providing regional climates for impacts studies) system introduced to China from the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research at a high-resolution (50 km×50 km) over China. This research focuses on B2 scenario of SRES. A biogeochemical model 'Atmosphere Vegetation Integrated Model (AVIM2)' was applied to simulating ecosystem status in the 21st century. Then vulnerability of ecosystems was assessed based on a set of index of mainly net primary production (NPP) of vegetation. Results show that climate change would affect ecosystem of China severely and there would be a worse trend with the lapse of time. The regions where having vulnerable ecological background would have heavier impacts while some regions with better ecological background would also receive serious impacts. Extreme climate even would bring about worse impact on the ecosystems. Open shrub and desert steppe would be the two most affected types. When the extreme events happen, vulnerable ecosystem would extend to part of defoliate broad-leaved forest, woody grassland and evergreen conifer forest. Climate change would not always be negative. It could be of some benefit to cold region during the near-term. 7A gradient analysis on urban sprawl and urban landscape pattern between 1985 and 2000 in the Pearl River Delta, China显示文摘Urbanization is an irreversible trend world- wide,especially in rapidly developing China.Accelerated urbanization has resulted in rapid urban sprawl and urban landscape pattern changes.Quantifying the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban land use and landscape pattem not only can reveal the characteristics of social transfer and economic development,but also can provide insights into the driving mechanisms of land use changes.In this study,we integrated remote sensing (RS),geographic information system (GIS),landscape metrics,and gradient analysis to quantitatively compare the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use,urban sprawl,and landscape pattern for nine cities in the Pearl River Delta from 1985-2000. For the whole study region,urbanization was obvious.The results show an increase in urban buildup land and shrinkage of cropland in the Pearl River Delta.However, the nine cities differed greatly in terms of the process and magnitude of urban sprawl for both the spatial and temporal dimensions.This was most evident for the cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen.Gradient analysis on urban landscape changes could deepen understanding of the stages of urban development and provide a scientific foundation for future urban planning and land management strategies in China.Erfu DAI Zhuo WU Xiaodian DU 2018Frontiers of Earth Science2018,12,4:8

9Spatio-temporal variation of the wet-dry conditions from 1961 to 2015 in China显示文摘As an important part of the regional environment, the wet-dry climate condition is determined by precipitation and potential evapotranspiration(expressed as ETo). Based on weather station data, this study first calculated ETo by using the FAO56Penman-Monteith model. Then, the dryness index K(ratio of ETo to precipitation) was used to study the spatio-temporal variation of the wet-dry condition in China from 1961 to 2015; moreover, dominant climatic factors of the wet-dry condition change were discussed. The annual precipitation and ETo of the Qinling-Huaihe line were close to a balance(K≈1.0). The annual precipitation in most areas exceeded the ETo in the south of this line and the east of Hengduan Mountains(K<1.0), where the climate is wet.Furthermore, the precipitation in the northwest inland areas of China, where the climate is dry, was markedly lower than ETo(K≥4.0). The overall annual K of China fluctuated around the 55-year mean and its linear trend was not significant. However, a relatively wet period of about 10 yr(1987–1996) was recorded. The overall annual K of China showed strong cyclicality on the time scale of 3, 7–8, 11 and 26–28 yr, and regional differences of the annual K trends and cyclicality were large. The degrees of wetness in the Northwest China and western Qinghai-Tibet Plateau were substantially increased, whereas the degrees of dryness in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Sichuan Basin, and Loess Plateau were markedly increased. 13SOC storage and potential of grasslands from 2000 to 2012 in central and eastern Inner Mongolia, China显示文摘Grassland ecosystem is an important component of the terrestrial carbon cycle system. Clear comprehension of soil organic carbon(SOC) storage and potential of grasslands is very important for the effective management of grassland ecosystems. Grasslands in Inner Mongolia have undergone evident impacts from human activities and natural factors in recent decades. To explore the changes of carbon sequestration capacity of grasslands from 2000 to 2012, we carried out studies on the estimation of SOC storage and potential of grasslands in central and eastern Inner Mongolia, China based on field investigations and MODIS image data. First, we calculated vegetation cover using the dimidiate pixel model based on MODIS-EVI images. Following field investigations of aboveground biomass and plant height, we used a grassland quality evaluation model to get the grassland evaluation index, which is typically used to represent grassland quality. Second, a correlation regression model was established between grassland evaluation index and SOC density. Finally, by this regression model, we calculated the SOC storage and potential of the studied grasslands. Results indicated that SOC storage increased with fluctuations in the study area, and the annual changes varied among different sub-regions. The SOC storage of grasslands in 2012 increased by 0.51×1012 kg C compared to that in 2000. The average carbon sequestration rate was 0.04×1012 kg C/a. The slope of the values of SOC storage showed that SOC storage exhibited an overall increase since 2000, particularly for the grasslands of Hulun Buir city and Xilin Gol League, where the typical grassland type was mainly distributed. Taking the SOC storage under the best grassland quality between 2000 and 2012 as a reference, this study predicted that the SOC potential of grasslands in central and eastern Inner Mongolia in 2012 is 1.38×1012 kg C. 14STATISTICAL RELATIONS BETWEEN GEOMORPHIC PARAMETERS——A CASE STUDY OF THE YUNNAN REACH OF THE LANCANGJIANG RIVER IN SOUTHWESTERN CHINA显示文摘The properties of rivers and their catchments can be expressed by statistical relationships between geomorphic parameters. These statistical relationships may reveal some inherent differences in geomorphic evolution for different reaches or different order tributaries of a river basin. A case study was undertaken of the Yunnan reach of the Langcangjiang River. The catchment area, channel length and gradient of the first-, second- and third-order tributaries all with catchment areas larger than 100 km2 in the Yunnan reach were the main geomorphic parameters evaluated. The correlation between catchment area and channel length as well as between catchment area and channel gradient with respect to the total tributaries, different reach tributaries, and different order tributaries were revealed using statistical methods. In general, the channel length as a function of catchment area, was best expressed by a quadratic function where channel length increases with increasing catchment area (half parabola), while the channel gradient as a function of catchment area is best expressed by an exponential decay function. Comparison of the best-fit formulas revealed the following phenomena: the lower Yunnan reach tributaries and the first-order tributaries have a dominant effect on geomorphic parameters of the total tributaries. In addition, the statistical relationships indicate that the river geomorphic system in the upper and lower Yunnan reaches evolved differently. 16Eco-geographic Environment and Regional Development in Xinjiang of China显示文摘The study on relationship between eco-geographic environment(EGE) and regional development(RD) is of theoretical and practical significance to promote the comprehensive study on nature and human factors and regional coordination development.Based on the evaluation index system and models of EGE and RD, Quadrant Analysis Method(QAM) and the Coordination Degree and Coordinated Development Degree Model(CDCDDM) were applied to studying the relationship between EGE and RD in Xinjiang in this paper.The results show that Xinjiang can be divided into four type regions according to the relationship between EGE and RD, namely high coordination region(HCR), overloading development region(ODR), low coordination region(LCR) and potential development region(PDR).Most areas of Xinjiang belong to LCR which can not bear a larger population and support large-scale economic development.HCR, ODR and PDR, which are mainly distributed in piedmont oases and take basin as unit, should be focused on in the development of Xinjiang.The EGE has great influence on RD, and there is serious contradiction between them.Relevant suggestions on development strategies were put forward according to the character of different type regions, and the key regions of macro-layout of RD in Xinjiang were pointed out.XIA Fuqiang DAI Erfu ZHENG Du WU Shaohong YANG Qinye 2010Chinese Geographical Science2010,20,1:2

19Identification and Categorization of Climate Change Risks显示文摘The scientific evidence that climate is changing due to greenhouse gas emission is now incontestable, which may put many social, biological, and geophysical systems in the world at risk. In this paper, we first identified main risks induced from or aggravated by climate change. Then we categorized them applying a new risk categorization system brought forward by Renn in a framework of International Risk Governance Council. We proposed that 'uncer-tainty' could be treated as the classification criteria. Based on this, we established a quantitative method with fuzzy set theory, in which 'confidence' and 'likelihood' , the main quantitative terms for expressing uncertainties in IPCC, were used as the feature parameters to construct the fuzzy membership functions of four risk types. According to the maximum principle, most climate change risks identified were classified into the appropriate risk types. In the mean time, given that not all the quantitative terms are available, a qualitative approach was also adopted as a complementary classification method. 20Projecting Spatial Patterns of Flood Hazard: Recent Climate and Future Changes over Yangtze River Basin显示文摘Projection of hazard changes in climate extremes is critical to assessing the potential impacts of climate change on human and natural systems. Using simulations of providing regional climates for impacts studies, five indicators (rainstorm days, maximum 3-day precipitation, elevation, gradient and distance from river or lake) were selected to project the spatial patterns of flood hazard over Yangtze River Basin for the baseline period (1961– 1990) and future (2011–2100) under SRES B2 scenario. The results showed the mean annual rainstorm days over the basin by the near-term, mid-term and long-term would increase from 3.9 days to 4.7, 4.9 and 5.1 days, and the mean annual maximum 3-day precipitation from 122 mm to 143, 146 and 149 mm, respectively. The flood hazard of the basin would become more severe, especially in the middle and lower reaches.
