| 1 | A novel artificial nerve graft for repairing longdistance sciatic nerve defects:a self-assembling peptide nanofiber scaffold-containing poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) conduit显示文摘In this study, we developed a novel artificial nerve graft termed self-assembling peptide nanofiber scaffold(SAPNS)-containing poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)(PLGA) conduit(SPC) and used it to bridge a 10-mm-long sciatic nerve defect in the rat. Retrograde tracing, behavioral testing and histomorphometric analyses showed that compared with the empty PLGA conduit implantation group, the SPC implantation group had a larger number of growing and extending axons, a markedly increased diameter of regenerated axons and a greater thickness of the myelin sheath in the conduit. Furthermore, there was an increase in the size of the neuromuscular junction and myofiber diameter in the target muscle. These findings suggest that the novel artificial SPC nerve graft can promote axonal regeneration and remyelination in the transected peripheral nerve and can be used for repairing peripheral nerve injury. | Xianghai Wang Mengjie Pan Jinkun Wen Yinjuan Tang Audra D.Hamilton Yuanyuan Li Changhui Qian Zhongying Liu Wutian Wu Jiasong Guo | 2014 | Neural Regeneration Research2014,9,24: | 5 |
| 2 | Agricultural impacts of longwall mine subsidence:the experience in Illinois,USA and Queensland,Australia显示文摘Unlike conventional room and pillar underground coal mining, where subsidence is designed to be prevented, subsidence is a planned outcome of other methodologies. These include high extraction retreat, where the roof supporting pillars are systematically removed, and longwall mining, which employs a machine that mines a continuous strip of coal, thus leaving no roof supports. Both types result in the surface dropping -70% of the mined-out thickness. In Illinois there was a concern that farm land thus subsided would be lost to productive agriculture.Consequently, the possibility that planned mine subsidence would be banned in Illinois lead to the creation of the Illinois Mine Subsidence Research Program in 1985 to investigate agricultural impacts of planned mine subsidence and the possibility of mitigating its impact. Its findings established that subsidence was not as detrimental as feared and that the impacts could be mitigated. The project was a successful collaboration of state and federal governments and local Universities.Similarly,in Queensland, longwall mining is opposed by some in the farming community. In response,Bandanna Energy, the company planning the mining, organized the Agricultural Coexistence Research Committee to oversee research into the mitigation of longwall mining impacts.Although the soils, climate, and regulatory regimes are different, concerns of the local communities are similar. | Robert G.Darmody R.Bauer D.Barkley S.Clarke D.Hamilton | 2014 | International Journal of Coal Science & Technology2014,1,2: | 3 |

| 4 | Humanitarian action in academic institutions:a case study in the ethical stewardship of unidentified forensic cases显示文摘Forensic anthropologists are often responsible for the management of long-term unidentified individuals.Others have contextualised these decedents—many of whom likely belonged to socially,politically,and/or economically marginalised groups in life—as part of a larger identification crisis in the US.However, there has been little discussion surrounding how this humanitarian crisis has manifested in academic institutions, where anthropologists often provide medicolegal consultation and act as long-term stewards of the unidentified. The Identification&Repatriation Initiative was created at the Forensic Anthropology Centre at Texas State University(FACTS)to recognise and investigate unidentified human remains in long-term storage. Our paper outlines common challenges that were encountered during our initial reassessment of unidentified cases at FACTS,emphasising the detrimental impacts of inconsistent procedures, loss of context, and case fatigue. It is likely that other academic institutions face similar challenges, and by highlighting these issues we hope to help initiate a larger conversation concerning ethical stewardship of human remains in these settings.By incorporating humanitarian perspectives into forensic casework, anthropologists in academia can better advocate for the long-term unidentified. | Justin Z.Goldstein Mariah E.Moe Emilie L.Wiedenmeyer Petra M.Banks Sophia R.Mavroudas Michelle D.Hamilton | 2022 | Forensic Sciences Research2022,7,3: | 1 |
| 5 | The China tuberculosis clinical trials consortium network:a model for international TB clinical trials capacity building显示文摘Background:With the second largest tuberculosis(TB)burden globally,China is committed to actively engage in international TB clinical trials to contribute to global TB research. However, lack of research capacity among local sites has been identified as a barrier.Main text:The China Tuberculosis Clinical Trials Consortium(CTCTC)was initiated by Beijing Chest Hospital with investment from the US National Institutes of Health and technical support from Family Health International 360 in 2013,as a nationwide collaborative clinical trial network to strengthen selected clinical site research capacity and attract TB clinical trials. The program aims to:1)recruit leading hospitals that care for TB patients;2)conduct on-site assessment to identify capacity gaps and needs for improvement;3)design and deliver capacity building activities;4)attract and deliver high quality results for TB clinical trials.A total of 24 sites have joined CTCTC,covering 20 provinces in China.Twenty-two sites have been accredited by the National Medical Products Administration(NMPA)to be qualified to conduct TB clinical trials. The onsite assessment, extensive trainings among the CTCTC sites and young investigators have resulted in better understanding and improvement of the site capacity in conducting TB clinical trials. The establishment and growth of the CTCTC network has benefited from the good leadership, effective international cooperation and local commitment.Issues in human resources, regulatory environment and sustainability have been challenging the network from continuing growth.Clinical researchers have full-time clinical responsibilities in China and it is thus important to build a cadre of other human resources to assist. The regulatory environment is becoming friendlier in China to introduce international clinical trials to the CTCTC network. Conclusions:The CTCTC,with mature management structure and sustainable development model, which are distilled five key lessons for other developing countries or investigators of interest. They are the respectively using assessment-based approach to design tailored training package, understanding the availability of clinical researchers, providing solutions to maintain sustainability, understanding local regulatory environments and working with an international organization with local on-site team, respectively.Although, the experiences and capacity of China’s TB hospitals in conducting clinical research vary.Considerable efforts to continue building the capacity are still needed, although the gap is smaller for a few top-tier hospitals. | Yu-Hong Liu Shu Chen Jing-Tao Gao Yao Zhang Kimberly Booher Xiao-Fen Ding Wei Shu Jian Du Jing Bao Richard Hafner Carol D.Hamilton Liang Li | 2020 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2020,9,3: | 1 |
